Organic Baby Gifts: 5 Great Ideas To Get You Started

Author: Deanna Richland

If you’re searching for the perfect gift to give to some proud parents in your life then you can’t go wrong with organic baby gifts. Not only do many organic gifts look and feel fantastic, but they also help to protect the baby’s health and reduce your carbon footprint! Here are the top five organic baby gifts to get you started.

1) Organic Baby Blankets

There’s nothing better for a newborn baby than wrapping up in a soft, natural blanket. Buying a blanket made out of organic materials means that pesticides and chemical fertilizers weren’t used to grow it – and they won’t be passed into the baby’s skin. What’s more, organic blankets often feel softer and won’t cause allergies like synthetic materials can.

2) Bamboo Clothing

Bamboo isn’t traditionally thought of as a material for clothing, but it’s becoming more and more common thanks to how versatile and sustainable it is. Buying organic bamboo clothing is a thoughtful baby gift thanks to the fact that it helps to protect the Earth’s resources at the same time as protecting the baby’s delicate skin! And the good news is that the recipient won’t know the difference between bamboo clothing and standard materials – it’ll probably even be more comfortable and last longer!

3) Natural Baby Care Products

It’s shocking just how many baby products are out there: lotions, oils, soaps, shampoos, powders and more! These can all make fantastic organic baby gifts that ensure the products are as healthy as can be. They won’t be full of toxic chemicals that seep through the baby’s skin. Natural and organic baby care products are now available from a growing number of retailers, though for the best selection you may consider shopping online.

4) Gift Baskets

More and more stores and online retailers are now putting together organic baby gift baskets for a thoughtful yet convenient gift to give new parents or expectant mothers. These can include anything from natural diapers to wooden toys, organic clothing and organic food! This is a fantastic introduction to the world of organic baby products, if the parents aren’t yet convinced.

5) Eco-Friendly Baby Furniture

If you want to give something a little bigger than the gifts above then you can’t beat well-made, environmentally friendly baby furniture. Bassinets, cribs, wardrobes and so on will usually come in bamboo (especially if you shop online) which is one of the most sustainable products out there. It also looks fantastic in a nursery!

Organic baby gifts can really be special and memorable if you do some shopping to find the right products. They’ll show that you took time to think about the baby’s future by protecting their health and the planet they live on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is the best baby gate for top of stairs?
I just bought the Safety 1st Perfect fit, it’s wall mounted on top of my stairs and I don’t trust it. Also every time you open it you have to readjust it loosing its one hand open feature. Please share your experience.
    Thank you!
@barfly: So I should teach my 9m old (and walking) not to fall down the stairs and yet make sure the cabinets are locked? Sorry, a gate is a must. Anybody with kids have any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I have Dreambaby gates and love them. They’re metal and come in black or white. I have the standard size at the top of the stairs, and the extra-tall ones blocking access to the bottom of the stairs in the hallway. It takes a while to mount them properly, but the instructions are good and they’re strudy once mounted. They also swing closed automatically in both directions, though the click in kind of loud so I usually close them gently by hand. I ordered them online. They were more expensive than many gates, but totally worth it. You can open the gate easily with one hand.

You need to measure the space exactly, then buy any extensions you may need. The bottom and top of the space may be slightly different widths if you have a baseboard, but the mounting cups can screw out to different lengths. The more they’re screwed out, the less secure it is (thus the importance of getting extensions, if needed, rather than screwing out the mounting cups to the maximum). I wouldn’t trust any gate enough to lean against it at the top of the stairs, but ours has held firm every time we’ve bumped into it by accident, and it’s steady when my 13 month old daughter tries to shake the bars.

  2. QUESTION:
Hardware mounted, for top of stairs, angle mounted and auto close BABY GATE?
This is a tough one! Can anyone tell me a brand that includes ALL of those things? Hardware mounted, for top of stairs, angle mounted and auto close! I have found all of those things except auto close.

Angle Mount Safeway Safety Gate by Kidco is all of those things except auto close. I think with auto close, it would be nice so I don’t have to turn on the top of the stairs and close it-it would just close on its own. And it seems safer.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      Google it

  3. QUESTION:
I need a gate for the top of my stairs. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have a 7 month old who will be crawling any day now, so I need a safety gate that fits a wide opening. The problem is that I have a super fat cat that will not be able to jump the gate to get to her litter box. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to make my stairs off limits for my baby but still accessible to my cat?

    • ANSWER:
unfortunately, i think u will have to move the litter box; have never seen ones with wide enough bars for a fat cat and if they did, u might have baby’s head stuck in it…
i love my dream baby gates; they come with extensions, but you can buy more if you need them and i think although they do pressure mount, that you also get the hardware to bolt them into the wall for stairs and such…
they are very tall, the ones i have, so i feel like they will be able to be used longer

      http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2632199

we have them in white, but the black is pretty too…and they do have the hardware for stairs, i read on there while looking them up…

  4. QUESTION:
Are there any baby gates that pressure mount from both sides?
    We have this gate: http://www.target.com/Safety-1st-Perfect-Fit-Gate/dp/B000LRIZK4/qid=1243349591/ref=br_1_14/175-2296872-2550510?ie=UTF8&node=13299941&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=13299941&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2

It has those little posts on one side and then the adjustable pressure thing on the other side. Do they make gates that have the pressure thing on both sides? You would think this would make perfect sense for uneven walls. I’m looking for something for the bottom of our stairs. This gate is going to be installed at the top of the stairs.

    • ANSWER:
      Yes they do…
see the following site for several offerings… they are in EUROS but at least you can get the model and see if you can find it on ebay or another site.

  5. QUESTION:
Baby Safety gate for against banister?
I am looking for a GOOD! safety gate that I can use for my stairs, I have a banister so it would have to go against that, I would prefer to have one that DOESNT ruin the banister nd wall, but I want to make sure that if my son pushes against it, it wont fall over.
It needs to be able to open because I cant climb over top of it

    thank you so much!!

    • ANSWER:
At the top of stairs, a pressure-closed gate is not adequate. It will eventually given way, leading to a big tumble down the stairs. There are gates with “gate door” in them, with a handle to lift while pushing a release button. If your stairway is not near standard size, (ours is 23″, no gate fits), there is a gate which is kind of like a window shade turned sideways, with a latch to keep it in place. Pricey, but it did work well.

  6. QUESTION:
    Are baby gates really necessary?
Our daughter is 12 1/2 months old and we NEVER put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, but did have one at the top of the stairs. She has, for the last month, been climbing up the stairs without us even watching her. Since she is so good at it, I don’t even fret about it. I would like to encourage her more often to go down the stairs on her stomach, but she seems disinterested in going down, though she will if we require her to. Still, I think not having a baby gate at the bottom rapidly increased her skill level, strength, and safety using the stairs and I think we are better off because we never had one. All of our neighbor’s with similar aged babies have them, and wonder why we don’t.
To clear up any confusion, my daughter has never had one at the bottom of the stairs, ever. She is 12.5 months old and why have a baby gate when you can just close your child’s door isntead? Much like my neighbor’s backyard fence they installed to trap their daughter, I think it’s easier and more useful to “teach them” as opposed to restricting them. We were the same with her walking, she was doing it at 10.5 months and now walks quickly and well without assistance.

She climbs up the stairs barefoot. My goal is for her to learn how to safely get down the stairs and I will supervise and work with her until she is confident in her abilities. We often times let her climb up the stairs unsupervised. My wife did not like at first, but she now agrees that my daughter can climb without our staring her down. Over protective neighbor’s and friends still think it’s crazy, but I think they are just lazy parents/teachers.
It’s not about convenience Brooke, it’s about teaching them and their practicing. No way do I agree that it’s more convenient NOT to have gates than to have them. That’s just ridiculous. Lazy parents have gates, engaging parents teach.
OK, I think the most frustrating part of the comments is people commenting that my daughter “can’t possibly” be able to do this on her own. Yet again this morning she did without fail. For the record, we do have carpet on our stairs so perhaps that is why I am comfortable with it. At 8 months, she held herself on a pull up bar during baby gym class, and at one year we saw her lift a bocci ball all on her own and those things are heavy. So, perhaps your problem is lack of practice, don’t fear your children, let them build their muscles instead.

  7. QUESTION:
What is a good baby gate for the bottom of the stairs?
We have one made by The First Years at the top of the stairs that has a swinging door and a foot pedal to open it. We bought two of those but when we tried to put the second one at the bottom of the stairs it was too tall. The wall with the banister wasn’t tall enough to secure one of the top corners. Now I want a gate with a swinging door for safety reasons like not stepping over a gate while going up/down the stairs while holding my son. But I need one that is the height of the normal pressure gates. Also because of how the wall is set up we can’t screw it into the wall and it has weird baseboards and stuff so it has to have the adjustable corners. Like the one at the top of the stairs in all four corners you screw out the mount until it meets the wall… does that make sense?

    • ANSWER:
Uhm…I am just 14.5 and putting this out there…but, you should really go to Babies R Us and ask someone there.
I know they have baby gates, because…well, it’s a baby store.

We’ve had a baby gate for our dog, but it didn’t have a swinging door…

I tried looking at some, and I found some, but they are kind of…pricey..which is weird…because…well, just because prices for plastic and wood shouldn’t be this high…oh well.

Baby Proofing Your Home

Mommy Notes - Baby Proofing ...

Baby Proofing 101 – Maintain Your Home Security

Author: Oswald Melman

Becoming a new parent is one of the most terrifying yet beautiful events in any person’s life. From that moment, protecting your little delicate child is suddenly the biggest worry of any new parent as it should be. Babies and toddlers are so delicate that even a slight fall could cause irreparable damage that could ruin your child’s life. In order to protect against these dangers, you should make sure to child proof your home before you bring your newborn home. The best way to safeguard against the dangers your baby or toddler faces in your home is to hire a professional baby proofing service to come to your home and install the necessary safety equipment. However, these baby proofing services often come at quite a high price. If you are an average American, it is likely that you do not have thousands of dollars to throw at baby proofing your home. Luckily, there are other ways to accomplish the same goal. There are inexpensive measures you can take to baby proof your home against the dangers lurking in your home. Here are some tips that you can implement in your home to make sure that your baby or toddler stays out of harm’s way.

  • The first step to consider putting in your home is to install safety latches on all your cabinets and drawers. The cabinets and drawers in your kitchen and bathrooms contain several harmful items such as knives and silverware that could really harm your baby. The most important cabinets to install a safety latch on are the cabinets below the sink in your kitchen and bathrooms. These cabinets often contain harmful substances such as prescription medication and harsh toxic chemicals cleaning liquids that your baby or toddler could mistake for candy or juice. The best strategy to implement when dealing with these harmful substances is to keep these toxic substances in cabinets that are out of reach for your baby or toddler. This will completely eliminate the problem and keep your baby safe.

  • Another important step to implement is to install safety latches on the dials that are present on your oven and your stove. If your baby gains access to the stove area, he or she could easily accidentally turn one of the dials and turn the stove on. This could lead to your baby suffering quite severe burns. If you have safety latches installed on your stove, this could completely eliminate the hazard.

Overall, these tips are the basic minimum measures that you should implement in your house to make sure that your baby or toddler stays out of harm’s way. With all the dangerous everyday household items that are present in all of our homes, baby proofing your home is more important than ever before. Make sure to take several preventative steps to make sure your baby or toddler does not become the next baby-accident statistic. If you need any more information or have any questions regarding baby proofing your home, contact your local home security provider.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How are you baby-proofing your house with all the Christmas Decorations out?
This past weekend my daughter, 20 months, pulled her stocking off the mantel and the stocking holder hit her in the head, large bump and cut but she’s ok!

So that incident bought to me this question…how are you baby-proofing your home now that all the Christmas Decorations are out?

    • ANSWER:
Ouch!! Everything is out of our 9 month olds reach. We normally put the tree up in the living room but decided on the dining room this year (our house is pretty open so you can see it from the living room and kitchen). We did that b/c we can put the baby gates up in that room to keep him away from it. My mom told me I should just enforce the word no and carry on as normal. It has obviously been a while since she had a 9 month old!!!!!!!

  2. QUESTION:
Would you pay someone to baby proof your home?
They would come in and do everything to make sure your home is baby-proof, toddler proof, and even puppy proof! What would be a reasonable amount to charge? (minus cost of supplies)

    • ANSWER:
We looked into it but ended up not doing it – here is a link to a service in our area that friends have used with success. I think that if you have a bigger home or an older home, if you have a pool, then it could be worth it to have someone else take a look around and give you their recommendations. It does not take the place of looking around yourself – but a professional opinion does not hurt:

      http://www.safebeginningschildproofing.com/page.asp?pg=50

When we called them, they quoted for an in home walk around, consultation and plan. After that, we could discuss having them purchase and set up the safety items or we could just take their recommendations and do it ourself.

  3. QUESTION:
Would you pay a baby proofing company to safe gaurd your home?
Would you pay a company to come into your home to install baby proofing products? At a rate of 45 dollars an hour?

    • ANSWER:
Honestly, not a chance, but I am a do-it-yourself kind of person.

If you are apprehensive about doing it yourself, fear you will miss something, or that you will mess up more than you fix, then go for it.

If paying and having a professional do this for you allays some of your fear, then it is worth it.

Do you have a friend who is competently handy? Maybe he/she would work for less. I am sure there are some great books and articles out there on the subject to help.

  4. QUESTION:
What’s a good website to baby proof your home?
My daughters 8 months, and at the age of crawling everywhere, and wanting to walk. Just wanted to know if there’s a good helpful website to help baby proof my home!

    • ANSWER:
Go to the sites but remember the KEY:

crawl on the floor so you are at your baby’s height – look to see what she sees and baby-proof from there…it’s the best thing to do so you do not forget a thing.

  5. QUESTION:
When you were baby proofing your home what would you say was the most important things you did?
I’ve been baby proofing , but i’m not sure if some of the things i’m doing are overkill or not. What’s some of the biggest close calls you’ve had and thought oh**** i should’ve done known to do that!
Yes (waiting for isaiah’s mom) i’m having the exact same arguement with my hubby which is why i’m asking this question. He says were drilling way to many holes in the house and that shelf is heavy enough. That’s what made me think am i overkilling, but i guess not! mommies have better instincts about this kinda stuff i think!
Yes Lorie i am to a believer in teaching them what they can and can’t touch, but has it ever backfired? has she hurt herself on something when you weren’t looking? I have family members whose kids are animals and touch and break everything b/c their parents put everything high up so they never learned to respect and not touch/break other peoples stuff!
I just don’t want that to happen to me but i also don’t want her to hurt herself!

    • ANSWER:
We waited till our daughter was on the move and saw what she went for and fixed the problem spots then.
      They were
The kitchen cupboards, put those child proof locks on them. Which my mum and sisters can’t open either, lol.
Other than that I only used a baby gate so she couldn’t get down the hallway and into the bathroom, bedrooms, laundry or toilet. Stuff on tables and tv cabinet were ok for her to touch, although when she did we let her know that she wasn’t allowed to and that was that. It didn’t;t take her long to know the things that she was allowed to touch and the ones she wasn’t. I’ a firm believer that letting a child know from an early age what is ok and not ok to touch is they key element. Putting everything up high or locking it away just makes them more curious later on. With in reason of course. I’m not leaving bottles of chemicals out for her to touch and play with. As for shelves. Yes,if I had any that she could reach I would bolt them down. After all kids are inquisitive little things. The power point things are a great idea also. But my points are hidden by furniture that she can’t move, so no experience there. One thing that I learnt the hard way was the dvd/video player was a great hiddy place. I wish I got one of those locks that you put on the front. More for my sake than hers, if you know what I mean, lol

*I can’t say it has backfired. A few things that must have look to pretty to resist took longer for her to realise she can’t touch them. But no, she has never hurt herself on something I left out. (thankgod)

  6. QUESTION:
How old was your baby when you first started child proofing your home?
My daughter is 4 months and I am trying to decide when the right time to do it is…..

    • ANSWER:
Now is the right time. You just never know when your baby will take off…my little girl started crawling at 5 1/2 months and I wasn’t quite ready for it so I had to rush to get it all done to keep her safe. Now she is 8 months old and is almost walking (cruising while holding furniture) and thankfully our house is as secure as it gets. The best way to do it is to crawl around and see what you could get into (EVERYTHING LOL)

  7. QUESTION:
How have you baby-proofed your home?
My son is 5 1/2 months old and we can tell he’s just days away from crawling. He’s made a huge advancement in his rolling in the past few days and is now doing an army crawl, but moving backwards. So my husband and I know that we’ve got to baby proof the house now. We know to get all the cabinets locked as well as covering all the unused wall outlets.

But my question is we have a TV console that is open, no doors. So all our gaming consoles, DVD player, DVR, etc are all exposed as well as all the cables in the back. My husband is in IT so he’s meticulous about keeping the cables organized and they’re all neatly zip-tied together, but I worry about my son getting back there. I keep a close eye on him, but you always hear the stories that begin, “I just turned around for a second…” So how would you go about making the TV console baby proof? Would you recommend just getting a new console that would close? I’m not sure we have the money to do that right away, but it’s something we could save for. My son’s safety comes first.

Also, we have a fireplace with a brick hearth. Has anyone used the fireplace safety pads that you can buy at Babies R Us? Are they worth it or is there a better product out there? Here’s the pads I’m talking about: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3240295
Just wanted to add that we keep our decor pretty simple, so no knick knacks and such.

Thanks for the tip on using the gate in front of the tv console. I think we might try that. I don’t think we’re going to go overboard baby proofing, I think a lot of it has to do with common sense, like shutting the door like many of you have mentioned.
Michelle – I know exactly how you feel. It’s a little overwhelming!

    • ANSWER:
Get one of those long gates and put it across the TV. Looks kinda tacky but it’ll keep him out. We just put one up since my daughter rolls to the TV stand too.

EDIT: I just looked back over the question and a long gate might work for the fireplace. My friend had a marble fireplace and that’s exactly what she did. I hope this helps.

  8. QUESTION:
Web site for childproofing your home?
I need to find a website where you can buy *everything* available to baby proof your home. Does anybody know of any? I looked at Babies r us & Wal-mart & they didn’t have everything…most sites or stores only have small selections. Any ideas would be helpful.

    • ANSWER:

      Best wishes.

It is not enough just buying a nice looking baby crib mattress for your loved one. The crib mattress should not only be comfortable and good looking but it should also be safe as well as phthalate free. Combination of comfort and safety will be the bundle of joy for your loved ones and the attributes are present only in good quality baby mattresses.

Avoid Lax Decision

Parents should not consider buying the mattress for the nursery with any laxity. Multiple aspects are to be looked into and issues need to be addressed. Some of the major considerations are –

•  Extra firmness of the mattress used so that the tender body of the baby does not get aches and pains.

•  Mattress purchased should conform to the size specifications rightly.

•  It should have height adjustment facilities since the baby would be growing constantly.

•  Product purchased should be free of toxic chemicals like phthalates those are found in most of the traditional mattresses.

Other Safety Concerns

Unless the mattress snugly fits into the cribs from all sides, there would always be the danger of the child suffering from suffocation or entrapment. Loose chords or strings can result in strangulation. A good number of babies in America die due to cribs accident and in majority of the cases it had been suffocation, strangulation, or entrapment. Unfortunate part of this is that a little caution and care on the part of the parents could easily have avoided the sad mishap.

Important Steps Ensuring Safety of Child

Some of the important safety steps ensuring safety of the baby could be as follows.

•  Standard size of baby mattresses come at 51 5/8″/ 27 ¼” and the ideal thickness should be 6″ and not more. Wrong measurements resulted in 20,000 Simon mattresses recalled in 2008.

•  Mattress should be firm and uniform in nature. Sturdy interior will prevent it from unnecessarily sagging and causing discomfort for the baby.

•  Extra mattresses may not be put in the cribs as it could turn out to be the spring board for accidents.

•  When the baby is able to stand, the mattress should be lowered to the lowest levels so that the baby cannot climb out.

Despite their uses, crib mattresses will become obsolete once the child gets taller than the side bar of the cribs making it possible to easily climb out.

Safecribsandmore.com is the online stores that offer highly durable crib mattresses that fit in perfectly with any type of cribs including the mini cribs . Lasting for years together, the products purchased can easily give the buyer his or her money’s worth.

Washing the clothes of your baby looks like something simple to do. However, you should notice that you have a lot of details to be noticed in washing baby clothes. Your baby is still very fragile and has greater risk to suffer from any illness, so you really need to think about the sterility as well as the cleanliness of the clothes.
