What to Look For in a Baby Stroller

Author: Sarah Mastura

In this time and age when product recalls happen so often, people can only wish that their baby strollers will be spared from any disparity or safety failure. Strollers, as baby carriages, definitely provide babies a safe and comfortable ride. In having strollers, safety is of utmost consideration as parents cannot afford to put their babies at great risk. Knowing what exactly to look for in a safe and well-designed stroller is the best for a proper and inviting welcoming for the baby.

Cost range

No matter how much one’s budget for a stroller, safety must never be compromised. It is offered at a discount or is cheaper than the rest that you have seen; you do not want to purchase a stroller because of that. There are various models that come in different styles, sizes and features and are priced from as cheap as to as high as 0 when it comes to the price range. You need to afford it. So, the choice is really yours.

A standard stroller will do for simple walking around town or at the mall, but models which are priced higher are more advantageous as they can also be used in taking the child off-roading. Strollers of this type are equipped with special wheels so that the baby can be brought to almost anywhere. You don’t have to be away from your child for too long in this way.

At the moment, check which one will satisfy your need. The less expensive one is good for you if you are on a tight budget and don’t often go off-roading.
Design and Production

How safe and comfortable a stroller will be for a child is depending on its structure. When you want to buy a stroller, make sure that the model does not have the rough edges that his hands might cut on or gaps where the child can trap his hands in. Children can very curious at this stage that when they are strapped in the stroller, their hands can get real busy and before you know it, they couldn’t get it out anymore. Definitely, strollers need to be smooth on all sides.

The style of the stroller such as the color of the fabric, sun covers, attachments such as rain and wind covers, types of canopies, and netting must also be considered. The child safety and protection that is right for him are all provided by these features and factors.

Models

A popular type of strollers is the traditional tram type, which is disadvantageous as its maneuverability can be very difficult. Multiple rider strollers, meanwhile, offer various seating arrangements and have heavy frames. Jogging strollers are also available in the market and have a different type of wheelbase.

It is very important to check on the various types of strollers to determine which one fits the child and his needs best.

All I am able to find is the crib tents but I don’t want a tent just the inside net to keep my daughters hands and feet from poking through the crib rails. I saw it once before on target.com but am unable to locate it now. Need help finding something like this to protect her.

    • ANSWER:
Check out www.onestepahead.com . They have a nice line of “breathable bumpers.”

** after checking again the ones at www.onestepahead.com are the same as the ones from Toys r Us, made by BreathableBaby, but One Step Ahead has them in several different colors and TRU only has sage and pink. (same price both places)

  3. QUESTION:
would this affect the baby in any way?? help PLEASE.=)?

    • ANSWER:
You’re seriously considering spending that much money on something your baby will be in for a few short weeks and won’t even remember?

No, it won’t harm her – but seriously, buy a cheap basket and put the difference in a savings account for your baby.

  4. QUESTION:
Can anyone suggest some plot outlines for my new short story entitled Of Rats And Republicans?
The story is loosely based on the Steinbeck novel and also tells of two drifters and their travels.

Dick, a “free market republican” and trust fund baby constantly complains of the weak and lazy while stealing his challenged friend Tommy’s Disability Check each month.

The story opens with the drunken Dick in a bar in Louisiana loudly bashing social safety nets in front of shrimpers left unemployed by the BP Oil Spill and Tommy trying to rescue him before they beat him to death.

Any ideas to help with the plot will be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
here is an idea, how about you write about something that will make you money, rather than writing about a fictional satire that is based on false stereo types.

  5. QUESTION:
    Baby showers and Godparents?
    All right…
I’m not close to any person in particular outside my safety net, which is compromised of family members only.
My SO and I are having a baby party as opposed to a shower because I hate the idea of being in a room full of females… I don’t really relate. So, testosterone will be in attendence. My fisrt question is, etiquette aside, is it wrong for my SIL and his mom to cohost so we have equal representation?

Moving on to the morbid details of choosing a guardian and back-up guardian should the horrible happen, what if my SO and I are completely disagreeing on who should raise our offspring should we both meet an untimely fate? I hate to think about it, but I’m one of those “always be prepared” kind of people.

    • ANSWER:
In answer to your first question: it is totally appropriate and probably welcome to have both sides of the family represented.

As to the second question: Maybe you could each pick a guardian and then if something should happen to you whomever is in a better situation to take care of your child gets custody. You can add this provision to your will. Some things to consider are: how many kids does the proposed guardian have at the time of your demise, are they financially capable of supporting another child; do they have room in their home; will they be able to provide money for college, etc. etc.

  6. QUESTION:
What do you think about the state storing your child’s blood samples without your permission?
“A critical safety net for babies — that heelprick of blood taken from every newborn in the U.S. — is facing an ethics attack.

After those tiny blood spots are tested for a list of devastating diseases, some states are storing them for years. Scientists consider the leftover samples a treasure, both to improve newborn screening and to study bigger questions, like which environmental toxins can harm a fetus’ developing heart or which genes trigger childhood cancers.

But seldom are parents asked to consent to such research — most probably do not know it occurs — raising privacy concerns that are shaking up one of public health’s most successful programs. Texas is poised to throw away blood samples from more than 5 million babies to settle a lawsuit from parents angry at what they call secret DNA warehousing. A judge recently dismissed a similar lawsuit in Minnesota.”

    http://www.usatoday.com/news/health/2010-02-08-baby-blood_N.htm?csp=24&RM_Exclude=Juno

And would you give consent for your baby’s blood – stripped of name and any other identifiers – to be used for scientific research?

    • ANSWER:
You know, if it wasn’t for not having access to McDonalds and epidurals, I’d be all for taking the red pill and living out in the middle of the bush in Alaska out of the insane matrix.

I can’t say there’s anything nefarious to this, but the opportunity exists.

I’m more annoyed that parents can’t opt out of these tests in many states. A baby was seized from his parents for several days in Nebraska a few years back because they had a homebirth and opted not to take him to the hospital for the PKU. They were nice enough to let the mother breastfeed him 3 times a day. Yeah, newborns only eat at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

I can see the benefit to society too, but I’m really in a F this, I’m my own person mood today.

  7. QUESTION:
Where does social safety net end and a free ride begin?

    http://www.federalbudget.com/

Wage earners pay taxes and a growing portion of it goes to LBJ’s continuing failed war on poverty. An unmarried woman has children from different men, she and the children have needs. An illegal comes across the boarder and has an anchor baby, she and that new citizen have needs.

Take a look at this link, human services exceeds Defense and Socialist Security. The chart shows federal ONLY, not State, county or local spending on welfare. Much subsistence for welfare come from the lower government levels.

12.4 trillion in borrowed money and it’s getting worse by the moment.

Bonus question: Will “Entitlements” will bury this nation?

    What say you?’
    .

    • ANSWER:
Social Security was designed to be a Ponzi scheme as when it began life expectancy of the average Male was 58 and he couldn’t collect until he was 65, women lived to be 62 thus FDR thought no one wil collect, oh but was he wrong, that got SS into immediate trouble yet people paid in as soon as they began to work, then LBJ and the great War on poverty , rather than creating jobs he created hand outs, and lo and behold people began taking advantage of them entire generations have been reared on food stamps wic and state programs, plus Medicaid and Medicare and now we are faced with even more because people have become addicted to the hand out and afraid of taking personal responsibility. Prior to these social programs no one died no one starved as private charities took care of the needs as did churches and doctors often bartered care.It has since snowballed out of control.

Yes it will bury us unless we end it now!

  8. QUESTION:
am i just a safety net to him he always feels the need to come back to me after a while?
And I fall for it every single time because I do love him, plus he’s my daughters father. he dates around and then after a while he’ll come back to me and be like baby I love you, I don’t want to be with anyone but you and that will go on for a month or two then back again into the same cycle, he gets mad about something then declares that he’s done “trying to make it work”. Last night he came over (he has a new girlfriend btw) and he said that he won’t be able to love anyone else like he loves me and he kissed me! He told me had to leave right after and I asked where to? He said he had a date. Why is he doing this to me? If I even try dating he’ll get mad and be like “I don’t like you bringing random men around my daughter”. How can he sleep with me one day actually act like he’s serious about his family then dip out to go on a date?

    • ANSWER:
There is nothing wrong with this situation. It’s perfectly normal and acceptible for this to happen. In most trailer parks it’s even expected.

Baby Travel Safety Tips ...

Stroller Safety

Author: Sandra Wilson

While you are thinking about your new life as a stroller owner, take a minute to think stroller safety. There are basically two types of stroller safety: the physical manufacture of the stroller and the common sense of the stroller driver. Let’s talk about the build-in stroller safety points. These build-in safety features are the ones usually evaluated in the stroller consumer reports. Wheels are essential for stroller safety. Check the stroller’s wheels often, maybe make it a habit to check them every time you take the stroller out. With most families’ active lifestyle a strollers’ wheels could easily wear out. Wobbling is a good indication the wheels are wearing. Some strollers have removable wheels that can become loose, or even fall out. Make sure these are secure. Find wheel problems before they cause an accident. Brakes, check them often especially if you use your stroller outside. Brakes keep your stroller from running faster than you do. Make sure they are free of dirt and work properly. Does your stroller have a safety strap? If so, use it. It can keep a climbing child in the correct position to keep the stroller from tipping. Strollers are designed to have the child’s weight in the center of the seat. When the little tyke climbs up or leans to one side, the stroller becomes unbalanced and could tip over, or the child could fall out. Also, by using the build-in stroller straps consistently, the child becomes used to seat belts and does not complain when required to use auto seat belts later in life. There is a second type of stroller safety strap. It attaches to the stroller and the stroller driver so that the stroller cannot roll away. This one is primarily useful if you use your stroller on hills. Some strollers fold up to tiny proportions. That means they have places where there are latches and hooks. These should be sturdy and fully secure before you put your baby in the stroller. The lightweight and umbrella strollers are particularly likely to have these fasteners just by their vary nature of being the stroller type people buy because they do fold. Pinched fingers or a stroller that suddenly folds up on the baby is a stroller safety issue easy to avoid. Let’s move to the operator error issues in stroller safety. Stroller consumer reports often do not venture into these types of issues. Most of this section on stroller safety will probably seem to be seems to be common sense. However, it must be said. The built-in storage on your stroller could be an accident waiting to happen. To avoid stuffing your stroller out of balance, put the heaviest items under the seat. Use the storage behind the seat for the lighter quick-grab essentials. Experiment with this. Empty your stroller. Now hang your fully-loaded purse or diaper bag on the handle. What happens? That tipping can happen with your baby inside. And, if by some chance you did not use the stroller safety belt…your baby could flip through air like a circus performer. Of course at this point you would practice your best horror-movie scream. This last stroller safety item is for all parents and stroller drivers who cross streets and/or parking lots. Do NOT, and repeating, Do NOT push the stroller ahead of you into the lane of traffic. What are those people thinking? If the driver is up on the curb, but the baby in the stroller is in the lane of traffic, what ARE they thinking. Are they thinking that because they checked all the stroller safety items that their baby will be safe, no matter what? Let’s just hope that the baby did not get the stroller-in-the-street-stroller-driver-on-the-curb-gene.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Has anyone bought a safety first z80 travel system or a safety first “traveler” travel system? First baby!?
Has anyone bought a safety first z80 travel system or a safety first “traveler” travel system?
Just wondering if anyone has any comments or concerns about these two strollers or if there are any other strollers recommended? We are having our first baby in November and are trying to find a stroller that will be good for around that time.

    • ANSWER:
What I’d recommend is getting your infant carseat, and getting the Snap-N-Go stroller. It’s just a stroller frame that fits most carseat brands. It’s so much easier to use. It’s light weight and doesn’t take up a lot of room in your car trunk or cargo area. Then once your baby begins to outgrow the infant carseat, you can shop for a stroller you really like that doesn’t have you limited to just a travel system and you’ll probably save money in the process. I did this with my twins. I HATED the big bulky travel system, then found a used double snap-n-go on craigslist for half the cost of new, then sold it when I was done with it and got some of my money back in the process.

  2. QUESTION:
What are the toxic-free brands of baby toys? Are brands such as Safety First and The First Years safe?
Are these brands free of pthalates? My baby is 7 months old and she needs some toys to stimulate her. Any suggestions. Safe toys, of course.

    • ANSWER:
No, most of the toys you will find at regular commercial toy stores do contain pthalates. The FDA and other regulatory agencies do now acknowledge any dangers in pthalates, parabens, dioxins, SLS, sodium polyacrylate, etc., so the manufacturers don’t see a need to change to more expensive materials. If you want non-toxic toys, shop at natural baby stores. Some good online stores are:

  4. QUESTION:
Does anyone have a safety first travel system?
Im really wanting the best car seat stroller combo for my baby who will be arriving in December or January. But Im not near a store who sells any of the good brands. And id like to onlt spend about 0 on it. Is it really that big of a deal if the adjustment strap is in the back of the seat or base? ive heard both Graco and safety first have it that way now i don’t know what to get? Please some body help!!!!

    • ANSWER:
A lot of people will say travel systems are a waste of money. It’s not necessary to stick the car seat in the stroller. As long as you have a stroller that will lay back it’s ok to put a newborn in it laying down. Usually 4 months is when it’s recommended to sit them up in the stroller.
Things to consider in a car seat:
Weight limit- standard infant carriers go to 20 or 22 pounds. Many babies surpass this weight limit before their 1st birthday, and the _minimum_ to turn an infant forward facing is 20 pounds -and- at least 1 year old. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y2DVfqFhseo This video is a good demo of why it’s not recommended to flip baby around at the minimum age. The new AAP guidelines say to keep the child rear facing until 2 years old, and the rear facing weight limit on the seat.
If you want an infant carrier, they make seats like the Graco Snugride 35 that will hold the child rear facing to 35 pounds.

If you don’t feel you need an infant carrier, it’s ok to go straight to a convertible seat. The Graco My Ride 65 will hold a newborn from 5 pounds and up. The My Ride 65 allows a child to stay rear facing to 40 pounds, and then switch forward until 65 pounds, still in a 5 point harness.

If you go with the high weight limit infant carrier, once you turn your child forward facing you’d get a forward only seat like the Graco Nautilus that will 5 point harness to 65 pounds. You can then remove the harness straps and use it as a high back belt positioning booster. You would use the belt positioning booster until the positioner is no longer needed. This means that the child will sit upright in the seat, with the seat belt low across the hips, and the chest strap crossing over the collar bone- not rubbing the neck or falling onto the shoulder.

If you go with the My Ride 65, you do not need another harnessed forward facing seat. You can go straight to a high back booster than converts to a backless booster.

Car-safety.org is a good place to do lots of your own research on this as well.

Also regarding the adjustment strap- when it is in the back of the seat, you must re-adjust carefully every time your child wears a thicker or thinner shirt/pant to ensure that you are getting a proper fit, and it is quite tedious. With the strap in the front, it’s very easy to loosen so that your child can be removed comfortably, and it’s easy to tighten to ensure a proper fit each time.

      **eta**
Do _not_ buy a used car seat unless it is from a relative or close friend that you can trust. If you buy it from somebody you don’t know, you might end up with a car seat that’s been in a crash. A crash can cause unseen damage that could cause the car seat to not work properly in the event of a crash with your child in the seat. It’s not worth the risk.

  5. QUESTION:
I will be having a first baby soon. Do I need to get rid of my cat and Labrador for safety reasons?

    Change that to “My wife…”

    • ANSWER:
No, unless your dog has a bad temperment. You can keep both cats and dogs. Pregnant women should not clean litterboxes, but whoever said that you should get rid of your cat should be sent away. We have two cats and they are curious but very gentle with our baby. Just always watch them when they are together. Also, get a crib tent because your cats may want to snuggle with baby when sleeping and that is not safe as heavier cats can make it difficult for baby to breathe if they jump on top of the baby. Please do not abandon your beloved animals. There are always ways to make living situations work for all.

One thing we did is that when my baby was born, my husband would go back and forth from the hospital to home to feed the cats, etc. Each time he went, I sent him with a blanket or clothing item that smelled like the baby. When I came home, my husband carried the baby in and I went straight for the cats so that they knew I stilled loved them. Apparently, cats can get jealous. My cats love the baby and I think they think she is theirs too because they try to groom her and run to her when she cries.

  6. QUESTION:
Does your baby monitor pick up weird noises?
I have a safety first baby monitor and it’s been quiet all night and then about 5 minutes ago there was this loud static noise that lasted about .5 seconds.

Seriously made me jump out of my skin. I can’t help but think there’s something lurking around here that I can’t see!

Does the static on your monitor ever freak you out?

    • ANSWER:
I used to have a Safety 1st monitor and got an angel care one because I had the same problem, but even then it still happens so I also think that there is something lurking around here too.

I think it has to do with the plug in, but I could be wrong.

  7. QUESTION:
Does anybody have the safety first high definition baby monitor?
This monitor was recommended to me by several people as it doesn’t interfere with wireless networks, cell signals etc. and from what I have observed from seeing it in use at my sister’s house it is great. However, I can’t seem to get a charge on the parent unit. Has anybody else had this problem. I’m going to call the company tomorrow during business hours, but wanted to check to see if anybody else had a solution for me.
I’ve pulled out the plastic tab to make the connection available to the battery and have opened up the back to make sure the rechargable batteries are properly aligned and that the plastic tab was fully removed.

    • ANSWER:
No i dont have that monitor, just take it back to the store you bought it, dont even bother ringing they should replace/refund for you

  8. QUESTION:
I have a Safety First Designer Car Seat- Orchard, I was wondering which Travel system would work with it?
I really feel stupid for buying this car seat, I jumped the gun and purchased it because I fell in love with the design, I now wish that I had purchased a full travel system. I was wondering if anyone knew if there is a stroller that will allow me to attach the car seat to it. I do not want a frame, I want to purchase something I can use when my baby gets older, too.

    • ANSWER:
I know you don’t want to buy a frame (one you just sit a car seat it, not actual stroller) but take it from me, after they grow out of the infant car seat, you really aren’t going to want to use a huge travel system stroller anyway. Just buy a cheap frame type thing or even a sling for now. Then later when your child is around 5 months old use a lightweight stroller. Chicco make a or lightweight stroller that is really nice. I have a Maclaren that is lightweight and i never use my big bulky stroller. In fact, my daughter is 21 months and i’m thinking about selling it at our garage sale next week. Invest in a really good lightweight stroller instead, you’ll be happy you did later!

Tapping Into Experienced Parents Advice

Since my wife and I first had our daughter several years ago, we have been blessed to have so much help from many friends and family members along the way. I remember when I first found out my wife was pregnant, that I was ecstatic when she gave me the news. This feeling quickly drained out of my body the first time we went shopping for baby items, and I instantly had this overwhelming feeling come over me. I realized that there was going to be so much for me to not only buy, but learn as well. I had no idea what the best items we needed to get were, and in fact I had no idea what we even really needed for our baby. Of course, every new parent is faced with these type of obstacles in the beginning, and it is only natural as I later found out, that you worry like this.

I came to the realization that that my wife and I weren’t having this baby alone, as we had wonderful support system of our friends and family, who were more than willing to offer us advice and help, whenever we asked for it. For instance, my wife and I wanted to get a particular stroller, but it was extremely expensive and we were pretty distraught that we could not afford it. However, her best friend who already had two children of her own, told us about an off brand model that was almost exactly the same, albeit half the price. This was a real godsend for us, and we were extremely thankful to her. She also offered a ton of useful advice that really helped clear up a number of foggy issues for my wife and I. There were also a number of other people who really stepped to the plate whenever we needed help, such as my parents, who helped us buy a really expensive crib, and a number of other items we could not afford at the time.

This is why I would encourage any parents to accept any help that is offered to you. You have to learn to put your pride aside, and be humble for your baby’s sake. You have to remember that this is no longer about you, but it is about your child. Once you start thinking in this manner, it makes it much easier to make decisions, and to accept help from people when you need it.

What To Look For In A Good Value Buggy

Pink buggies always seems to be the choice of colour when families are lucky enough to have a baby girl. I wonder who first decided that pink should become the favourite colour for a girl and blue for a boy. Someone must have started that trend. I wonder when it first started too.

Consequently the most common colours for most items for babies are blue and pink.

When looking to buy a pink stroller, pushchair or pram, you will find a wide selection on the market. Plus, you can get a pink pushchair from major manufacturers such as Hauck, O’baby and antique Silver Cross.

Apart from the colour I think that the comfort and safety of your little one are the most important factors to consider when hunting for pink pushchairs. Then you look at the type of wheels, tyres and chassis.

The choice of tyre style will depend on the surface you normally push your prams over. If you constantly travel across fields or other rough ground, it may well be worthwhile to pay a little more for a better suspension and inflated tyres to make the ride smoother for baby.

To make life easier for mum, it is possible to get a stroller with wheels that turn a whole 360 degrees. This makes it easier to manoeuvre when pushing it around the aisles in the local supermarket or anywhere else for that matter.

More basic strollers just have static wheels but they are fine for normal everyday use as well. The number of actual wheels is more of a personal issue. The standard on most carriages is to have four but some have just 3. I must admit that it does not make any difference to me.

The chassis of the vast majority of buggies nowadays is strong enough to withstand the daily use that is expected of it. The people who build them know that they will be used an awful lot.

A traveling system refers to any kind of stroller or carriage that can help you and your child when moving around. There are so many brands and designs of traveling systems in the market, but you need to know the following tips before you select one for your child.

Your ideal traveling system should first and foremost be comfortable for your baby. You will be taking your child out to the playground or even out to visit your neighbors and friends, so your baby should be at ease throughout the trip. Choose a traveling system that has enough padding in the seat and good wheels that will ensure that your child is comfy.

Also check that the stroller has adequate room for keeping your child’s toys and snacks. The storage part should be easy to reach and should accommodate all the items you need for your child. This will keep your child occupied and make traveling easier. For example, the graco travel system has a drop down basket that you can store what you and your baby need for the journey.

Another factor to consider is the weight that the traveling system can support. The weight should correspond with the age of your child, and in some cases this is more important for safety. Your child should fit properly without putting strain on any part of the stroller. The same principle should be applied for other child accessories like your chicco highchair which should accommodate the weight of your child.

In some cases, your child’s weight can be more important, because your child may weigh more than their age. Select your travel equipment according to the weight rather than age so that all the safety settings and recommendations can work best for you. This is also important when choosing a car seat, such as the maxi cosi car seat that comes in different sizes. It is therefore important to take your child with you when shopping for a car seat to select the ideal one for your baby’s protection. Keep these tips in mind when looking for a traveling system for your children.

Why Buy Baby Changing Bags?

Often times, new parents find out the hard way what they need and don’t need. Allow us to advise you right here and now that baby changing bags are an utmost necessity, not only a convenience. You need a bag to keep nappy equipment in, bottom line.

It’s not just that it’s easier if you have a bag, it’s just not very practical not to have one. Here are just a few good reasons that you absolutely need a bag to store all your nappies and changing gear.

It’s not going to Fit In Your Purse

Maybe your purse can hold several nappies and several wipes, but how about baby powder? What about cloths along with a change of clothes, just in case? The fact is that everything you need in your own home to change nappies, you are going to need when on an outing, too, and it simply won’t fit comfortably inside your purse or in your back pocket.

You Want It All In One Place

Ideally, you would like to be able to just pick up your bag ofnappy products and go, right? You don’t want to stop and search around everywhere each time you go out anywhere. If you keep your nappies and changing equipment in one spot, then it is simply a matter of grab and go. You don’t get that with a loosely organized pile of stuff stuffed underneath the sink. A bag simply makes everything easier.

Portability

Without a bag, you are able to go ahead and store a big stack of nappies, a change of clothes and the cleaning equipment under your arm, or you can have your kid carry them in the stroller. Not really practical, right? Well, a bag takes care of that.

If you’re looking for a bag, our advice is to look for one that you consider stylish and comfy to carry around, since you WILL be carrying it around quite a lot.
