Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What age is acceptable to remove child safety gates on stairs?
My daughter is 3 years old and stays with her grandparents one night a month. They have a very tall staircase that has wood, no carpeting, and her room is upstairs, while they sleep downstairs. My mother thinks our daughter is old enough to not use the gate at the top of the stairs any longer, but my husband and I are concerned that she’s still a little wobbly (especially after just having woken up) and there is a danger there. I’ve looked online for any info but would like some feedback from others who might have a similar situation. The thought of her falling scares me to death. How do you know when a child is old enough not to need safety gates?

    • ANSWER:
When she can go up and down the stairs consistently by herself without falling, she’s old enough to not use the gates. My niece is 3 and every time my sister thinks she no longer needs the gates, she ends up falling down the stairs.

  2. QUESTION:
I need to find a stair gate that is 34″ tall. Can’t afford to have one made Help!?
I finally convinced my husband to replace the iron stair railing with wood. We found a carpenter and bought a standard child stair safety gate that he was to install when the railing was done. Upon completion he informed me that the gate is too short, we need a 34″ tall gate. I can’t find one anywhere. I’m 8 mths pregnant with my 3rd child, I have a 3 and1 yr old, this is something I don’t want to deal with. Anyone knows where I can get one?

    • ANSWER:
I’m not really sure why you need a 34″ tall gate, but why don’t you try the pet store, they sell doggy gates and they look just like baby gates. Or why don’t you install the gate a few inches off the ground so it is higher?
Is this about how it will be attached to the stairs? because I have an all oak staircase which I refuse to drill into, so instead I attached an extra piece of wood to the stairs using large heavy duty zip ties and then drilled the hardware into to that, which will be removed when gate is no longer needed.

  3. QUESTION:
child safety gates in old house – 1860 – with dog leg stairs. How to attach? best to buy?

    • ANSWER:
Buy new ones! Safety standards have changed since 1860 !!!

  4. QUESTION:
Child safety gate that would fit between two railings at the top of my stairs?
I’m looking for a child safety gate that would fit between railings on either side? The ones that I found currently fit between two walls for support. What can I do?

    • ANSWER:
OSB and 2’4′s … make your own :)

  5. QUESTION:
Installing a gate for child safety at the top of the stairs is easy and no problem. What is available mid way
My worry is when the child falls from the top stair with stairs being so high with today’s 10 foot ceilings on the first floor. What can I do to help catch them in case of a fall to prevent injury or other.

    • ANSWER:
baby gates are not very safe to place at the top of the stairs however if you place one in front of there bedroom and one at the stairs it will slow her down babys can climb over the gates my 16 month old did and surprised me place one at the bottom of the stairs and just keep and real close watch on baby

  6. QUESTION:
What can I do? My 5 year old has learned to open the child safety gates?
I have a 5 year old and a 22 month old…both girls…I have gates at the top and bottom of the stairs to stop the toddler from wandering and maybe falling downstairs at night (she sleeps in a toddler bed) This morning woke up and it was oddly quiet…that was because the 5 year old had woken up and quietly gone into the toddlers room…they had then sneaked downstairs together as the 5 year old has suddenly learned to open he very stiff safety gate! They had gotten themselves a tin of biscuits and sat down to watch tv! I reckon they had been there an hour or more before I woke up….my 5 year old used to be too nervous to do anything like this…but now her sister is bigger she seems to have gotten braver!

There was a terrible mess….and I am worried now…I sleep very heavily and I think it must have been about 5 AM that they got up….we usually get up at 6.30 am….I could set an alarm clock I suppose…but that would mean me rising before 5 am!

What do other Mothers do about early rising sneaky kids?

    • ANSWER:
Hiya Daisy, as you know my two are a similar age to yours (although E turned 6 last week)

I have actually given up on baby gates. E just climbed over them and when he was a year old A started to climb over them too. (email me, I’ll send you a video clip!)

Initially, I switched the gate from the top of the stairs to the bedroom door (as if he did fall he wouldn’t tumble right the way down the stairs) and now I’ve removed them altogether. There really was no point.

As you don’t have the climbing issue I suggest you set down ground rules for your older girl. If she gets up early she must either stay and play in her room or if she goes downstairs, do so alone, close the gate behind her and NO biscuits.

Obviously when the younger child is a bit bigger and you are confident she is fine with stairs they can both go down together – you may even get a decent lie-in if they are entertaining each other :)

  7. QUESTION:
Safety Gates for children on indoor stairs in the house are recommended untill what age?

    • ANSWER:
My son is 2 in April and we are still using the baby gates.

  8. QUESTION:
Can the same stair gate be used as a safety device for either children or pets?
I am currently researching stair gates for both myself and a friend– one of us needs a gate for pets and the other for children… wondering if the same type is safe for either use.

    • ANSWER:
Yes they can be used for both pets and childen.

Driving and New Babies: Safety 101

Author: Veronica Scott

Every new parent knows that having a new baby is a wonderful, if not sleep deprived, experience. 3am feedings and disrupted sleep schedules come hand in hand with your new little bundle of joy and as exciting as it is to introduce your little one to friends and family members around town, as well as try to create the appearance of normalcy in your very changed life, you have to remember that there is much more to driving safely with your little one other than an investment in the latest and greatest car seat.

It goes without saying that you are tired and while you and your significant other are probably thinking that you can “handle” the lack of sleep, your mind and your body might be telling a different story, especially when you are trying to get back into a routine. There is one rule that you must follow before you hit the road, whether it is to go to the grocery store or if you are getting back to your work commute, you must get enough sleep.

If you take to driving after nights of interrupted sleep, your mood, as well as your ability to respond or think through situations where you might have to react quickly while driving is going to be impaired. Sleep deprivation on the road has the same effects as drunkenness; blurred vision, slow or delayed reaction time, lack of hand eye coordination and impaired motor skills can all up your chances of having an accident, whether with your baby in the car, or alone.

Therefore, in order to drive better with a new baby, consider both your options and follow these tips:

* If you are suffering from sleep deprivation, but have to get somewhere, consider alternate forms of transportation such as calling a friend or relative for a ride; utilizing public transportation such as a cab, subway, or bus; or, if your destination is close enough, consider walking.

* If you absolutely have to drive, ask family or friends to watch the baby while you get some much needed shut eye so you can be prepared when you get in your car.

* Do not drink caffeine or alcohol before going to bed. This will have the ability to disrupt your sleep schedule and could contribute to the way you feel when you get behind the wheel in the morning.

* If you are driving and you feel drowsy, pull to the side of the road immediately or switch places in the car with another licensed driver.

Remember, as a new parent, you probably have the mentality that you can “do it all.” Face the fact that you might need some help in getting the sleep that you need before you get back to the grind or before you start toting your little one around town. Making sure you get enough sleep to feel alert and ready to face the road is very important. It will not only protect you and your life, but also the very precious cargo that you have strapped into that very expensive and safety conscious car seat in the back.

    • ANSWER:
Public conveyances (buses, trains, taxis, aircraft, etc.) do not have the child restraint requirements mandated for privately owned vehicles. 6. QUESTION:
Pro Bono Lawyer ASAP for NC Grand-babies Please pass the word for my grand-babies safety and wellbeing Thanks!
HELP NEED PRO BONO LAWYER IN NC ASAP Help save 2 Babies Please I need find a lawyer in only a few days, before court Ive never asked for freebies but this is for my grandchildrens safety My hubby and I are on disability we do not have funds for a Lawyer Legal Aid said they cannot help with this kind of case A serious complicated scenario took place and when I stepped in to get custody a family member of my sons girlfriend came in from another state got a lawyer & left with them the babies hardly know them Ive spoke with authorities here they dont know how this could have happened As a result of a judges order 1 yr ago deeming my home stable & safe place for my son & grandchildren to be Now that they got a lawyer I desperately need one I was advised by authorties to get one ASAP. I would leave more info but it could jeopardize the babies They deserve to grow up in a safe loving caring home where they are not exposed to yelling fighting violence drugs on a daily basis. Thanks so Much

    • ANSWER:
Ok. In a lot of medium sized communities local law firms take up family disputes Pro Bono. Since I don’t know exactly where you live I can not specify an exact name. If you can’t find a firm that does this kind of side work, talk to a few lawyers and see if they would handle the case free of charge.

Word of the wise. Under no circumstances should you or anyone on behalf of you try to retreive the children without first getting a lawyer. Doing this will get you in hot water.

  7. QUESTION:
What is the best car seat (safety)on the market for babies 25 pounds and over?
I’ve been finding lots of articles praising the Graco Nautilus. Just wondering what other people have found?

    • ANSWER:
I have found the Britax carseats to be some of the safest out there.
I opted for the True Fit by first years. Same safety ratings, my son is comfortable and it was easier on my wallet.
Also the Alpha and Omega’s as supposed to be really good too!
But… any car seat on the road needs to go through the same road tests as all other car seats and pass the same safety inspections.
So find a car seat that works for you, fits in your car and fits your child well! (fitting your budget might be a concern too!)

  8. QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

    • ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

5 Tips To Help Your Baby Go To Sleep

New parents often find that one of the greatest challenges they face is when their baby won’t sleep. Teaching a baby to fall asleep and stay asleep should be a top priority for new parents as sleep deprivation can lead to childhood obesity, depression, behavioral problems, illness and learning difficulties.

There are proven baby sleep techniques that can really help babies and parents find a better night’s sleep.  Here are 5 tips to help your baby go to sleep easier:

1. Develop a Baby Sleep Routine – Children thrive on routine and predictability. With proper nap and bedtime routines, a child will know what to expect and begin to welcome sleep as part of the daily schedule. A typical bedtime routine might last 20-30 minutes (possibly longer for spirited children) and include diaper and pajamas, a quiet game, breastfeeding/bottle/cup (for babies under 2), teeth brushing, potty (if applicable), reading, cuddling, and then lights out. A nap routine is similar to the bedtime routine, but usually shorter, about 10 minutes.

Your baby’s sleep routine does not necessarily need to include bath time. Parents simply may not have time or energy to bathe their child every day, and, until they are older and getting very dirty, there is no need. Second, if a child is spirited, a bath may actually do more to energize the child than calm him.

2. Schedule an Early Bedtime – An early bedtime is crucial to a good night’s sleep for baby. When babies and young children are overtired, they may have more difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep and will often wake too early in the morning. While many parents think that keeping a child up later at night will help with baby sleep problems, it is actually the early bedtime that will lead to a more restful sleep for a baby and lead to later waking in the morning.

3. Ensure Baby Takes Naps – The better a baby naps during the day, the better she will sleep at night because she is less likely to be overtired at bedtime. A good nap lasts at least one hour and is in a quiet, sedentary location, versus in a stroller, swing or car, which is not nearly as restorative. Shorter, more frequent naps are common during baby’s first 6 months. If your baby is in daycare, parents may need to work with their daycare providers to establish a baby sleep routine  and techniques to enable the baby or toddler to nap longer.

4. Avoid Sleep Associations – Babies, like all humans, have natural sleep cycles, which are periodic awakenings throughout the night. Often baby sleep techniques for new parents will involve a soothing device or action, like a pacifier, bottle, nursing, or rocking, which baby cannot replicate on his own when he awakens between sleep cycles. When baby cannot go back to sleep, he will likely cry out for Mom or Dad to help him. Baby sleep associations are often at the root of so many baby sleep problems. This is why it’s important for parents to put the baby into his bed awake, so that he falls asleep on his own and will be able to put himself back to sleep during the night.

5. Manage Baby Night Feedings – Through the first nine months, it is considered normal for babies to eat one or two times overnight. Some stop much sooner on their own accord or with just a little nudge from mom. If a baby is eating more frequently than that or she is older than nine months, Mom may want to consider cutting back (or cutting out) night feedings. All babies are different and experts disagree as to when feeding baby at night should stop. A mom knows her baby best and will be best able to determine whether she still needs to eat at night, but any more than two feedings after three months old and she probably has a sleep association with nursing or the bottle.

Everyone’s situation is unique and that what works for one family may not work for another. It takes courage and dedication to work through your baby’s sleep issues, but the time spent on teaching your baby healthy sleep habits will be worth it.
