The middle is safest by far… but having said that, you can put the baby in any position you wish so long as there is an anchor point to attach the seat to.
When i had one baby she went in the middle forward facing but on the side when rearfacing due to issues with the size of the car.
When i had two kids the baby was on the side the whole time as well as the older child who was also in a car seat still.
When i had three kids the newborn capsule went on the side as its hard to get it in the car when its in the middle, but when he went forward facing he went in the middle, with the two older ones in car seats on the sides

Tip 1. Securing your child car safety seat Always install the seat tightly, using your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1″) of movement of the seat from side to side or forward. Each time you place your child in the car safety seat, give it a tug to make sure it is still secure
Tip 2. Using tether straps with forward-facing car seats
The tether strap for a forward-facing child car safety seat must be used. The tether strap is located on the rear of the child car safety seat and has a hook. The hook is designed to attach the strap to the tether anchorage on the vehicle as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Ensure the tether is only secured to the designated anchorage point(s) in the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.
Tip 3. Using Universal Anchorage System (UAS) / LATCH
All new Canadian vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2002 come with lower universal anchorage points. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual before using the UAS system/LATCH to determine where the anchorage points are located and ensure that the correct method is used as advised by the car seat manufacturer.
Tip 5. Using harness slots
Your child car safety seat’s harness straps must be positioned correctly by ensuring they pass through the correct slots.
Rear-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or below the child’s shoulders.
Forward-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or above the child’s shoulders.
Tip 6. Securing your child in the harness

Tip 10. Installing your rear-facing child car safety seat on a proper angle
Most child car safety seats have a recline position that must be used when in the rear-facing position for an infant (up to 9kg or 20lbs). Check your child car safety seat owner’s manual for instructions. For rear-facing seats, if necessary, use a tightly rolled towel or a foam bar (pool noodle) under the base of the child car safety seat to adjust the angle to 45 degrees. In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.
Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.
Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

Once your baby has arrived, one of the most important parts of your new life together will be getting a good night’s sleep a” you in your bed, the baby in a safe and comfortable crib. At first, you may want your newborn to sleep in a bassinet by your bed, making it a little easier for breastfeeding moms, but have a crib ready by the time your baby can roll over.
Your baby will spend more time in the crib than anywhere else, so safety is of utmost importance. What makes a crib safe?
* The bars or slats of the crib railing should be no more than 2-3/8″ apart, close enough together to prevent your baby’s head from slipping through or getting stuck. That crib in the attic may be a beautiful antique, but it probably does not meet this safety standard. Secondhand older cribs may also have splinters or lead paint as well as slats that are too far apart.
* Cribs with cutout designs along the rail may look pretty, but your baby’s arm or neck could get stuck in them.
* The crib must be sturdy. Your child will sleep in a crib until it’s time to move into a regular bed between the ages of 2 and 3. When shopping for the crib, give it a good shake to see if it wobbles or rattles.
* Construction materials should be stained or painted hardwoods like maple, ash, beech or oak. The use of inferior woods can potentially weaken or warp the slats. Some metal cribs are also very sturdy and secure. All finish materials must be lead free and non-toxic.
* For safety, the dropsides must be at least 9″ above the mattress support when lowered. When the side is raised, the top must be at least 26″ above the support at its lowest position. You should have no trouble quietly raising and lowering the side rail easily with one hand, since chances are you’ll have a sleeping baby in your arms.
* Make things a little easier on your back by choosing a crib with an adjustable height mattress. A newborn can rest higher in the crib, while a baby who can sit up needs a lower mattress so he can’t climb out. You can change the height of most mattresses by simply raising or lowering the mattress support.
* Check the hardware on the crib for sharp edges or points or anything else that could hurt your baby.
* The mattress should fit snugly into the crib. If you can fit two fingers between the side of the mattress and the crib, it is too small. Keep an eye on foam mattresses; over time, they may break down at the edges and leave gaps. Check the mattress support to make sure there are safety clips that lock the hangers into their notches.
* Use nonflammable and hypoallergenic bumper padding attached to the inside railings of the crib to cushion all four sides and prevent your baby from sticking an arm or leg through the railings. Securely fasten the bumper pads to the sides of the crib in at least six places. Be sure to remove bumper pads when your baby becomes more active.
* Follow assembly instructions carefully. Periodically tighten all nuts, bolts, and screws and check teething rails for cracks. Check the mattress support hooks regularly.
* Don’t place a crib against a window, near curtains or drapery cords, or near furniture that could help your baby climb out.
* Crib toys need to be removed from the crib when baby is sleeping. And remove mobiles when baby is able to grab at objects.
Federal safety guidelines went into effect in 1973, but only since 1991 do most cribs meet all mandatory safety standards (16CFR part 1508) as set by The Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC) and the voluntary standards (ASTM F966 and F1169) as set by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). The Juvenile Products Manufacturers’ Association (JPMA) certifies cribs that meet the safety standards.

I agree with you when you said you want to paint the room in nice and light colours. I find that most pastel colours do have a calming effect to both your child and you.
However, I don’t think you should use too many colours. I find it very confusing and a little messy in terms of organisation. Since your foam mats are of a blue shade, perhaps paint the walls in cool colours to match. I find that lavenders of green and blue (or even purple as an alternative colour) might work well. Or if you find lavenders too plain for your liking, choose ONE colour (e.g. blue), and paint the walls in different shades of it (e.g. Alice blue, azure, indigo) – that’s what my aunt once did for my cousin’s room long ago.
Try to ask for your relatives’ opinions too – they certainly know you better, and might give more valuable and accurate opinions that you and your little boy might appreciate! Good luck and all the best for the decorating!

My baby keeps bumping his head everywhere!!!!?
My boy is ten months every time I put him on the floor to crawl he pulls up un the furniture I already babyproofed with the safety first foam thingys that you put on the corners of the tables but he always falls and bumps his head on the chair or sofa or whatever just today he has bump his head like 5 times I knew that was going to happen but I’m scared his gonna get seriuosly hurt and my bf blames everytime cause he says I’m not watching him I can’t be right next to him 24/7 I’m getting the gates that become an enclosed playard so he can play and crawl without getting hurt. But what should I do right now he doesn’t want the jumparoo anymore I want to let him be a kid but i don’t want him to get hurt. Thanks!
ANSWER:
If he is really bumping his head that much, he will learn that it hurts and to stop doing it. If it’s a soft thing he falls on like sofa, don’t worry too much. Try wrapping blankets around what he normally bumps and see if that helps.
He will eventually get more balance and learn not to bump everything.
Tell your BF he can suck it LOL, it’s hard being a parent.

Pool toys/safety devices for toddler?
I have an 18-month-old sister, and babysit her often. My grandparents, where I babysit her, have a large backyard pool that is now just open for the season. Since it’s been in the 90′s for temperatures here for the past few weeks, it’s gotten me thinking about taking her into the pool this summer. She’s obviously too little to swim, and so I’ve been looking at flotation devices to keep help keep her safe in the pool while she’s in there with an adult. I can take her in there without anything, but I think it would make her (and me) feel a little more comfortable to be buoyant. I’ve run across baby inflatable floats, water wings, live jackets, life preservers, even baby wetsuits with foam in them. For parents who have gone through this, what do you recommend?
We have a child’s pool as well for her and our 9-month-old cousin to use, but it would be nice to be able to take her into the larger pool when the rest of the family is in there.
ANSWER:
She actually isn’t too little to learn how to swim…or at the very least float. The safest thing you could probably put her in is a life jacket or a wetsuit with the jacket built in. Also never ever let her out of your immediate reach. Water wings won’t do anything if she doesn’t know how to tread water on her own. Baby floats or preservers can tip over and keep the child submerged. A jacket is the best thing to keep their head above water.
ADD: I just want to add. that this is a great time to start teaching her about floating and treading water. Water safety can never begin early enough.

Consumer Reports Magazine Crash test worries
In its February 2007 issue, Consumer Reports magazine reported on crash tests it performed to test the safety of car seats. The results were not encouraging.
Most of the infant car seats tested by Consumer Reports “failed disastrously” in crashes at speeds as low as 56 km/h. The seats came off their bases or twisted in place, the report said. In one case, a test dummy was hurled more than nine metres.
Of the 12 car seats tested, Consumer Reports said it could recommend only two, and it urged a U.S. federal recall of the poorest performing seat, the Evenflo Discovery, which is not sold in Canada.
All the car seats passed U.S. standards — but Consumer Reports argues those standards should be raised.
To be sold in Canada and the United States, an infant seat must perform adequately in a 48 km/h frontal crash, and Consumer Reports found that all but the Discovery did so. But it noted that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducts its crash tests for new cars at higher speeds — 56 km/h for frontal crashes and 61 km/h for side crashes — so the magazine tested the seats at those speeds.
“It’s unconscionable that infant seats, which are designed to protect the most vulnerable children, aren’t routinely tested the same as new cars,” said Consumer Reports’ Don Mays, a product safety director.
The only seats that passed all the tests were the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS — expanded polystyrene foam — both selling for about US. Consumer Reports urged parents shopping for seats to buy one of those two, but it also noted that “any child car seat is better than no seat at all.”
It also said some seats performed better when attached by vehicle safety belts than when attached with the LATCH system. The system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, includes belts that hook the base of a car seat to metal anchors in the vehicle.

On January 4, 2007, Consumer Reports published a safety alert in the U.S. claiming that most infant car seats failed their new front- and side-crash evaluation tests. The report also claims that of 12 seats tested, only two performed well: the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS (i.e., expanded polystyrene). Only six of the twelve infant car seat models chosen by Consumer Reports for this testing are officially certified for and marketed in Canada. They are: the Graco SnugRide; the Peg-Perego Primo Viaggio SIP; the Evenflo Embrace V; the Graco SafeSeat; the Safety 1st Designer 22; and the Combi Centre ST.
Transport Canada wants to reassure the Canadian travelling public that the Department’s collision investigations and data analyses do not support the results obtained by Consumer Reports. When car seats are used correctly, they perform effectively in motor vehicle collisions and child occupants are afforded optimum protection.

I’m a mom of 3. Did not sleep with our first 2, and have recently started with our 3rd (and last). I know not to have any pillows or blankets around the baby. But I am still freaking out about the SIDS factor. To the point of not being able to sleep more than an hour or 2 a night!
Does anyone know of any other safety measure to take?
We have a king size memory foam top matress, cotton sheets, and are using the “baby wedge” to make sure she doesn’t move to a bad position. It still freaks me out big time though. With the memory foam matress, I’m scared everything will “sink”, and she’ll smother! It’s nearly impossible to go to sleep while trying to stay awake to make sure she stays still, and listening for her breathing! lol
I have seen online a “baby bed” type thing, that sits on your bed, and is supposed to keep them safe. Has anyone used one of them, or know anything about them. I’m exclusively breastfeeding (finally), so she’s waking every 2-3 hours anyways, and it’s most convenient to have her in bed. (hubby works a crazy schedule days/nights, and we have 2 other kids to keep asleep!)
Anyone have any advice, or product ideas that make it less scary?

We had this cradle bathing thing which I liked until at the bottom( that goes into the water) foam padding is always coming loose. The metal frame in there was getting rusty( way too rusty to use now). My son is so long that he stretched the length of the whole thing. The stuff this is made out of was starting to un rival so it had holes in it.

They say 3+ for liability reasons. It’s not a babymatt so they can’t market it as such. If it were a babymatt they’d have to do testing with it and babies which they probably just don’t want to do.
It’s totally fine, it’s not like there’s a chemical in them that only 3 year olds can handle.

The most important thing to keep in mind is to buy the right type of gate for your particular needs. What I mean is, when it comes to steps, you want to be sure and get one that is permanently mounted to the wall. Pressure mounted gates won’t hold up in the way a hardware mounted gate will.
Many of the accidents that happen occur because a toddler was able to push the gate over and because of simple laws of gravity, went right down on top of it. So be sure you get yourself a permanent mount like a KidCo Configure or one like a Cardinal Gates Stairway Gate. Another popular choice is the Evenflo Top Of Stair Plus Gate.
Next is the installation. You really need to install the hardware into a stud in the wall. I’ve seen many folks who have simply tried putting a screw into the drywall and had it quickly pull out once it was used. Even if it doesn’t immediately pull loose, any shaking or slamming of the gate will cause it to come out.

It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.
Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.
A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

There are gates with “gate door” in them, with a handle to lift while pushing a release button. I still don’t have a solution for baby proofing my windows?
So, I have been off and on thinking of a baby proof solution for my windows. I have a bit of time, maybe a few months before I really have to get serious about it. We live on the second story of a duplex.
They have screens but screens are not sufficient in safety. And we MUST have them open in the summer because we have no AC and it gets hot here.
We do not want to use the burglar bars on them. We feel they are a fire hazard because we only have one door going in and out of the house, if we are to block the windows with bars we could become trapped in an emergency.
I have not been able to find anything that will work.
We have several large and tall windows that are only about 1 1/2 to 2 feet off the floor. The largest ones span about 5-6 feet wide. The largest ones are in the living room. The smaller ones we are going to use the baby window guards. But they will not work on the ones that are about 6 feet wide. The windows are also very tall, we have vaulted ceilings and they go up to the top of the ceiling.
The windows have no ledges or ridge of any kind that I can use a baby gate in them and the baby proofing window guard is not long enough… They are close enough to the ground that when he is walking (which will be soon) he could reach them with no problem.
I thought about using mesh but will that hold well? How will I keep it on there? My son is a bruiser and very strong… If I were to try to put some mesh over the window I am certain he could rip them out.
I have heard about kids being killed falling out of windows and I just worry that they could be a hazzard.
Does anyone have any suggestions other than burglar bars? And I would use gates if I had a place to put them in to over the wondow but there is no ledge…

Http://onestepahead.com has a plexiglass type guard that is meant for stair railings so kids cannot fall through. What if you put some of that across the bottom 2 feet or so of the big windows? You could put it up a few inches so you could crack the window. Look for the “no climb deck guard”.
