A Child Safety Gate

Author: TravisOl

One of the most important jobs you have to do as a parent is to keep your child always safe. Each year thousands of young children die or get injured because of accidents which often unexpectedly happen in our lives. We as parents, have always to be on the alert, especially when the baby growing so fast and starts walking by themselves. Adults must keep a watchful eye in order to keep a vigilant watch over the little ones. It sounds very paradoxical, but small children can be badly hurt by just trying to get to know their own surroundings. There are however a great number of accessories available on the market which can help parents to cope with this problem.

As you can see there are a lot of items around to help to make a super thoughtful parent out of you. If you have a two-storied house or a fire place in the living room you had better seek a child safety gate. This very accessory will provide you the needed assistance.

How to choose an appropriate child gate?
Before choosing safety gates for your child you should have in mind what particular task these gates are supposed to complete. The type of safety gates your child needs depends on where it will be mounted and its purpose. If there is a stairway in your place there is a need of a baby safety gates mounted of the top of it. This should be only hardware mounted gates but not pressure-mounted ones. While buying such a gate determine exactly which accessory pieces and installation materials will be necessary for the application. There are special safety gates which can be installed without opposing and parallel walls. Any type of child safety gate is invented to protect your little one from getting into danger.

What construction is the best?
Speaking about construction it is important to mention that the most sturdy and long-lasting gates are those which are made of metal, such gates are recommended to be used around fireplaces, for obvious reason. In this case they protect your child from getting burnt and arson. Child safety gates can be also of wood, plastic, or mesh. Wooden gates are much lighter than metal ones and as safe as metal, however they can be damaged by chewing if such a gate is intended for a pet. In other cases the material which is the gate made of is more a question of taste than functionality.

Safety gates installation
It was mentioned above that the safest gates to provide adequate security in the top of a stairway are hardware mounted gates though pressure mounted safety gates are much quicker to install. Hardware mounted safety gates take some more time to install but are essential for many applications. Pressure-mounted gates are more popular because they don’t need holes to be installed, that means there is no need of drilling, easily moved from place to place, but still there is one blemish: a pressure mounted gate over time can cause worse damage.

One more piece of advice
In order to increase the security of gates read the detailed instructions for installing before buying it. This uncomplicated advice will help you avoid any unpleasant and unexpected difficulties when you bring it home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I buy a baby safety gate in Sydney Australia?
We are vacationing in Darling harbour, Sydney, Australia, and we are looking for a baby safety gate for our apartment. Where can we find one close by? Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
David Jones or Myers city stores should stock them & are a nice though uphill walk from Darling Hbr or take the monorail to Town Hall & walk from to the stores theyre right near Sydney Tower

  2. QUESTION:
Awkward space for a baby safety gate, any ideas?
I have a really awkward space in my hallway, its open plan and has two steps down to my livingroom with wooden banisters, and a standard safety gate wont fit, the opening is about the same size but because the banister is shaped we cannot get a gate to fit, anyone else had this problem or know of a solution?

    • ANSWER:
you can get gates made of strong fabric, its like a roller blind. called kiddyguard safety gate. or use babyden, or wall-fix 3 safetygate. all in mothercare catalogue.
good luck, i live in an old house with weird measurements everywhere so i know what its like!

  3. QUESTION:
Do they make a baby safety gate to fit a space 170cm wide?

The widest that I can find is 151cm :(

    • ANSWER:
Yes it is called a play pen. U should get one if u have a baby. They work well for young pups, kittens too..

  4. QUESTION:
Baby Safety gate for against banister?
I am looking for a GOOD! safety gate that I can use for my stairs, I have a banister so it would have to go against that, I would prefer to have one that DOESNT ruin the banister nd wall, but I want to make sure that if my son pushes against it, it wont fall over.
It needs to be able to open because I cant climb over top of it

    thank you so much!!

    • ANSWER:
At the top of stairs, a pressure-closed gate is not adequate. It will eventually given way, leading to a big tumble down the stairs. There are gates with “gate door” in them, with a handle to lift while pushing a release button. If your stairway is not near standard size, (ours is 23″, no gate fits), there is a gate which is kind of like a window shade turned sideways, with a latch to keep it in place. Pricey, but it did work well.

  5. QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

    • ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

It’s important to make sure your baby nice and snug to be warm this winter, But it’s also important to know when  coats and blankets should come off otherwise the child would be overheated and won’t feel the benefit of them when its time to take a trip out.

Small babies are not able to regulate their own body heat like we can. a baby doesn’t have the ability to take of a layer off clothes when feeling hot or to add a layer when cold that is why it is up to us as parents/carers to keep an eye on babies temperature to asure they are snug and do not get overheated or cold. You don’t have to undress a baby to tell how there temperature is. you may be able to tell by the baby crying when he’s too hot, though some babies just fall asleep, which can be extremly dangerous as you won’t know if he is tired or passed out due to heat exhaution.

most people feel a babies hands and feet to determain weather the child is cold but this isn’t the case as it is not accurate at all as these are usually colder than the body anyway. To test a babies temperature place the back of your hand on his chest or the back of his neck. If these feel cool then you are fine, but if they feel very cold or too warm, act accordingly to prevent them from overheating or being too cold.

some babies don’t like to wear a big bulky winter coat so you could  use layers like soft sleepsuits and jumpers  to keep them warm you may find that  blankets are a more flexible to keeping a baby warm or cool,  you might find that a baby finds fleecey baby clothes lighter and easier to move in, try not to make your baby uncomfortable but you need to make sure there ears are covered, especially if there is a cold wind buy light cotton hats to go under the coat hood.Do not use a scarf on a baby or very young child as this is a choking hazard!!

It is imortant to adjust your baby’s outside clothing when you go inside anywhere. A baby can suffer if it is unable to adjust to the temperatures so removing a layer or blankets and coat is essential when going inside shopping, taxi’s,cars, buses, cafe’s etc even though it may seem a pain I mean your only nipping in a shop for 10 minutes, even if your baby is asleep. It will make alot of a difference in making sure your child’s temperature is kept stable, raincovers are just as important to remove as well as the coat and blankets.

a good buy for a baby i found was the two piece pram suits and cosy toes, I could unwrap my child without hardly disturbing him.

The rules of parenthood

What is a good parent ? The aim is probably to be – as someone quite rightly put it –

“your child’s springboard and safety net”. But how do you do that? And most importantly of all: how do you give them self-confidence?

1) You’re good enough
These demands all the time. They seem to be an almost unavoidable part of the age we live in. We’re constantly striving to be good enough. So is that why we don’t think we’re

good enough as parents? There’s just loads of information washing over us, telling how to train our kids and how to stimulate them and it goes on and on and I can’t do it and I don’t have the time. But there’s no problem. You are good enough.

2) Listen to your intuition
We probably spend a lot of time wondering whether we’re doing the right thing (or wrong thing!), instead of listening to ourselves and our babies. Most of us have good intuition when it comes to knowing what’s right. Don’t watch others to see what they’re doing, unless it’s to get some ideas. Don’t copy anything. Your child has its own little personality and is a part of its own little family. You’re the ones that everything should work for.

3) Accept the baby you have
Does that sound a bit weird? Well, just think about it. When you’re expecting a baby, you have lots of hopes and dreams, and things don’t often turn out the way you’d imagine them to be. Maybe your child isn’t as outgoing as you – your child might be really shy. The little one might not handle change anything like as well as you do. Those are the

things that might really irritate you, and you have to work on them. All children are good at something, but perhaps not what you were thinking of.
Children have their own personalities. Some parents don’t need to tidy anything up, while others have to keep their homes spotless. Some children, quite simply, are more inquisitive than others, and that rarely has anything to do with their upbringing.

4) Support your child
Do you want to give your child self-confidence? If so, you have to respect the child. Your child is an individual and may not share your opinions. Their opinions are

important too. And exciting. Supporting your child, showing an interest in them, shows the little one that you accept it as it is. That your child is good enough, that its opinions are valid and important.
You also have to tell your child that you love it, even when it does silly things or is angry.

5) Setting boundaries isn’t always just a matter of saying no
Choose your disputes and be flexible. You don’t have to stick with a “no” just because that was your first response. And don’t say no automatically, that just makes the “no”

lose its effect. Think first.

6) Be adult
Allowing your child to decide everything and rule the everyday lives of the family just makes it feel frustrated. You’re the adult – you call the shots. And you don’t need to argue or appeal to your child’s better nature. You can make decisions based on the fact that you simply know best. But children do have the right to be angry.

7) Don’t threaten – if you can avoid it.
Watch out for threats. Choose carefully the threats you intend to use. Don’t threaten to leave your child alone or send it away, that can really cause anxiety. You’re allowed to get mad and shout sometimes, but you also have to apologise and explain why you were so angry.

8) Set a good example
Children don’t do what you say, they do what you do. The upbringing of a child is a result of the interests of the family and how the family works. If you want your child to show empathy, you have to do the same thing first.

9) Remember what it was like to be a child
Try in this way to understand why your child gets so angry, so frustrated, so happy. Try to understand your child’s arguments. Don’t say no just because you think having a playhouse in the living room would be a nuisance, for example.

Baby Proof Your House for Safety

Author: Gabriella Gometra

There is more to baby proofing your house than merely putting your precious collectibles out of reach of a crawling or walking baby. The main point to baby proofing your living space is to make your home safe for the baby. As soon as a baby can crawl, he or she will be touring about your home, learning everything there is about your stuff by putting his hands and mouth on it.

First, look at the room from your baby’s perspective on the floor. When the baby is at an age to put things in his or her mouth, you will find that you need to pay attention to vacuuming or sweeping your floors more often than you usually do. Any little piece of lint or clod of dirt may end up in the baby’s mouth. Perhaps a more serious concern is an electrical outlet on the wall. Buy plastic safety covers to cover the unused outlets. For outlets that must be in use all the time with a lamp or television plugged into it, you may need to get more creative. You can rearrange your furniture so the outlet and trailing electrical cords are not accessible.

Other things to be wary of is furniture or anything heavy that could tip if the baby pulls or pushes on it. Some examples of these are standing floor lamps, table lamps, a tablecloth with things on top of it, book shelves, and drawers. Sharp corners on furniture can be covered with baby safety corner guards. Also be sure to put anything that may be poisonous up out of reach, such as cleaning supplies and medications, and know your local poison control telephone number. Give away any houseplants that may be toxic. Also be cautious of certain garage sale bargains or secondhand baby things passed on to you for free. Old baby cribs or play yards should not have slats with spaces greater than two and three-eighths inches. Old toy boxes with an ordinary hinged lid are very dangerous. Newer toy boxes use a safety hinge. A child car safety seat should not be used if it is more than five years old and if you do not absolutely know it could not have been in an accident previously. Toys should be age-appropriate to your child. For a child under the age of three, a toy should be too large to be a choking hazard. A rule of thumb is the toy should be too large to pass through a toilet paper roll. The toy should be very well assembled so no small parts can be pulled off. The best way to baby proof your child’s environment is with plenty of adult supervision. You will think you have picked up everything the baby could possibly get into trouble with, and then you will be amazed that he found something else. It is the rare child that does not make it through childhood without a scar or two, but with vigilance only minor mishaps will occur.

  8. QUESTION:
Who was responsible for the safety of Baby P?
Following the recent death of the baby in Haringey, the chairwomen has stated that nobody at the board should take responsibility for his death. If that is the case, there is no point in having the board in the first place. They may not have commited the actual murder, but they are responsible for not carrying out their duties in safeguarding this child after 60 visits in 8 months from social workers. Somebody is responsible and should be sacked. What do you think?

    • ANSWER:
I have been very affected by this tragic case since I first heard of it two days ago. I can’t believe what they did to that poor little fella. I have two boys, one born after Peter, May 2006. I keep kissing and hugging him as if it will make me feel better. The mother was responsible for her child, apparently she already had three (where are they?) and has had another since. But seeing as she is an evil bitch, surely Sharon Shoesmith is responsible. She should resign (without entitlements) – how can she not take responsibility for her incompetent staff. I have emailed the leader of Haringey Council, Ed Balls, David Cameron (because I think he was right to call G Brown on it) and the LibDem member for the area.

How did the police drop the charges? What about the stupid doctor??? My son developed a cyst under his arm two months ago, and has had to have a series of blood tests to which he screams blue bloody murder. But the doctors continued to carry out the work they needed to do. here is a child, on the at risk register (does a hospital know this?), looks like crap, has horrendous injuries and doc doesn’t continue exam because he is cranky. Cranky? child was dying at this stage surely?

I am just devasted for this poor little mite, feel sick to my stomach and no one wants to actually discuss it with me it’s so horrendous.

The Time is Right for the Kidco BabySteps Electric Food Mill

By Wayne Baker

Hey, Wayne Baker here.

And you’re reading my uncensored review of what I really thought about the Kidco BabySteps Electric Food Mill. Why am I writing this? Well, when I was thinking of buying the Kidco BabySteps Electric Food Mill, there weren’t many real reviews around. So, I thought I’d do a quick write-up to help any of you who are in the same position I was.

With a new baby in the house approaching six months of age, we have started to think about solid foods. With our previous two children, we simply used commercially available processed foods. This time around, we want to do something better.

Many pediatricians recommend organic foods until the age of three. During this time babies are especially susceptible to the effects of environmental toxins, due to the fact that their cells are reproducing very rapidly.

With the expense of and difficulty in obtaining commercially available organic foods, a viable alternative seems to be to make our own.

Researching products has led me to see a common comment with some inexpensive food mills, that the motor wears out after two or three uses and that they don’t make enough food at once to be useful.

A very nice system that I have found is the KidCo BabySteps Electric Food Mill.

This system consists of an electric food mill with a two-cup capacity bowl, a very nice size for preparing adequate food for several days.

One of the things that I hate the most is cleaning. I am familiar with food processing and blender type devices that typically require careful cleaning of the motor since it cannot be immersed in water. The KidCo food mill has been ingeniously designed so that the five parts that need to be cleaned can all be simply put in the top rack of a dishwasher, while the motor is completely isolated and does not require cleaning at all. Very nice.

People who would benefit the most from purchasing the KidCo BabySteps Electric Food Mill are parents who are interested in the best for their baby’s health without going to a lot of extra hassle. This device is so easy to use and clean that it really doesn’t require a lot of extra work to provide your baby with the best possible nutrition at a very reasonable price.

The only thing that might be nice would be the addition of a recipe book, although this is certainly a minor complaint, and one could certainly upgrade to the KidCo BabySteps Basic Natural Feeding System, which includes a book.

This food mill is so simple to use that it can literally be used right out of the box, although it is recommended that you clean the parts before the first use.

The KidCo BabySteps Electric Food Mill is worth every penny of its cost and will make a nice addition to the kitchen of any household with a baby on board. With the health benefits of making baby food at home, you can

Major Sections To Install Evenflo Baby Gate Styles In Your House

Author: Manuel Ficko

Ensuring baby’s safety and comfort is a goal that every parent has. There are many ways of achieving this goal. First, parents should consider the age of their child. If your kid is now in toddler age, he or she is busy and nosy, of course.  For that reason, you ought to consider ordering an Evenflo baby gate. Evenflo, as many of you know it, is a giant company that has operated for over eighty-five years now. It enjoys immense customer support here in the US and across the globe.

If you are looking to purchase its children safety doors, plan your needs first. For instance, you have to monitor your child’s movements or its favorite play areas inside the house. Some areas put your toddler’s life in more danger than others do. For instance, playing near stairs can be very dangerous. Children could accidentally fall and roll a few times down the stairs.  By placing a door at the top of the stairway, you can stop children from using it on their own.

When you bring them down stairs, they could try to get something upstairs without your knowledge. Again, this poses more risks of falling down, and perhaps getting away with a few bruises or severe fractures. This necessitates another installation of an evenflo baby gate at the bottom of a staircase. Another risky area in every house is the kitchen.  Tots are always very curious to know what every grown up does in the kitchen.

Consequently, they will find a special moment to enter the kitchen. When inside there, toddlers will quickly experiment with knifes, cookers, and other dangerous items. As a parent, you should foresee all this and take an action. If a child finds a closed gate stopping entry to the kitchen, he or she will give up his or her mischief plans. Even when you are busy preparing the meals, you could open the main door and close the baby gate. This will keep the child from entering.

In addition, you could keep an eye on him or her as you work. Does your toddler own his or her own bedroom? If yes, you have to be very careful. Children behavior can be incomprehensible at times.  Some kids develop crazy love towards their small cribs, which most parents keep in their own bedroom. If they suddenly remember their sweet crib, they will find a way to creep outside their new bedrooms toward mum and dads’ What’s more, your little one could be a sleepwalker and you many not have a clue.

This could pose serious falls and injuries in the dead of night when grownups are asleep. Therefore, you have to buy another evenflo baby gate and install it across your child’s bedroom. Perhaps you have other areas in your big or small house that could endanger your kids. You can trust Evenflo company products. To find out what other people are saying about it, simply read product reviews. Many previous shoppers have nothing, but positive stories about the experiences they have had with this brand’s kid gates.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    baby gate?
i have seen the baby gate that is sort of circular i think it has 6 or 8 side i am interested in buying that, my question is to any m,others that have that gate was your child able to push it over when inside? my daughter is 10 months old and is standing up holding on to everything i am concerned that she would put all her weight on it and it would tip over, has this happened with any other children? thanks just wondering before i buy it

    • ANSWER:
I had one of those gates. I loved it. My kid’s were not able to push it over. When they were too big for it, we used it as an enclosure for our puppy. If you were really worried, maybe you could attach it to the wall somehow (just a thought)

  2. QUESTION:
What is the best baby gate for the best value without preset notches?
I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a baby gate you can buy that is pressurized lock without the preset notches of how long it goes? I have tried 2 different ones now with the notches and neither of them work in our hallway. My house has baseboards too. The gate also needs to be low enough for a cat to be able to jump over it or even under it. Any suggestions? I don’t want to have to install any screws into the wall for a baby gate.

    • ANSWER:
I would not recommend baby gates. By the time your baby is old enough to walk, he is old enough to roam.

  3. QUESTION:
What is a good baby gate that doesn’t use pressure on the doorway?
The entrance doorway to my kitchen is uneven (it’s an apartment) so the standard baby gates that push into the doorway don’t work. They slip right off because the wall isn’t level or something. I just need the standard sized door gate, but one that would connect another way. Does anyone have any suggestions?
We had a very heavy bench in front of it and she pushed it over and nearly broke my heel. It’s gotta be something that won’t be easy for her to move.

    • ANSWER:
Some people just put a box in front. Doesn`t cost you anything either. Choose something that you can step over or slide out of the way – such as a diaper box. If you don`t like the way it looks, you can add fabric over it and glue it with a glue gun. After, you can use the same box, as a toy box.

  4. QUESTION:
Which baby gate is good for the top of stairs?
I’m looking to buy a baby gate here in a few days. We live in an upstairs apartment so we have a flight of stairs in our house. Do any of you have one at the top of your stairs, do you like it, and where did you get it?

    • ANSWER:
If you can, get something that bolts into the wall – those are the most secure

  5. QUESTION:
What is the a baby gate without preset notches?
I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a baby gate you can buy that is pressurized lock without the preset notches of how long it makes it? I have tried 2 different ones now with the notches and neither of them work in our hallway. My house has baseboards too. The gate also needs to be low enough for a cat to be able to jump over it or even under it. Any suggestions? I don’t want to have to install any screws into the wall for a baby gate

    • ANSWER:

  6. QUESTION:
How do I transition from using the baby gate?
When my daughter, now almost 3, went to a toddler bed. We used the baby gate as a way of solidifying a bedtime and place. Now, more than a year later, we are having a hard time discarding this method. She can easily climb the gate now, but she wont go to sleep without having it. Is there a good way for us both to make the transition from a gate to going to bed without tangible boundaries?

    • ANSWER:

  7. QUESTION:
How to attach a Baby gate question?
I need to put a baby gate at the bottom of the steps for my now one year old girl who just figured out she can climb them. My problem is there isn’t a wall on both sides of the steps to attach a gate to. There is the wall on one side and the railing on the other. An iron railing to boot, not wood that I can screw something into. Does anyone have an idea of how to make a gate work in that situation ?

    • ANSWER:
Get a block of wood the length of the gate side. Use those plastic zip ties to secure the block of wood to the railing (super tight, of course) and make sure the wood edges are sanded, then use the gate as you intend.

  8. QUESTION:
My greyhound has been jumping the baby gate, how do I prevent this from happening?
My greyhound has anxiety and pees (or more) on the floor after I leave. I put up a baby gate but she escapes. She meets at the door with a mess on the floor. The baby gate is an extended height. How do I securely and safely prevent my greyhound from jumping the gate?
She refuses to go into the crate and prior to the baby gate, I came home to it filled with urine and feces. The crate seems to be adding to her anxiety, which is why I got the baby gate with the extended height.

    • ANSWER:
It’s hard to contain a Greyhound with a baby gate. My suggestion would be to find another method, either a door or something of that nature. Or crate train her, thats the best method to help teach a dog to hold it’s bladder.

When shopping for baby clothes, look for masculine colors such as blue, green, or yellow for boys and feminine colors such as soft pinks and purples. You want to consider the season before choosing the size for the baby. For example if the baby is 6 months and it’s the beginning of winter, you don’t want to buy an outfit for the summer that will fit a 6 month old. Otherwise, the baby will already have outgrown it. Instead, you would buy an outfit that will fit a 10-13 month old.

  3. QUESTION:
pregnant needs baby ideas. ladies?! please help!?
I am 5 months pregnant and I am going crazy getting things ready for the baby. The baby was not planned but we are still excited for its arrival. The problem is that I am so stressed out that I don’t even know what I need!

My husband made me a list of what I need but it does not seem like much. This is what is on his list:
    sippie cups
    utensils
    plates
    formula
    diapers
    clothes
    toys
    crib
    diaper bag
    mobile
    monitor
    bottles
    highchair
    safety gates
    pacifiers
    Am I missing anything?

How much do baby supplies cost all together? I just moved in a new house with my husband about 8 months ago and I am worried I might have trouble getting enough money for the baby.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
sippie cups – not till about 9 mos old
utensils- ? You will need some little spoons after the babies a few months old
Plates- for whom, adults eat from plates
Formula – only if you don’t breastfeed, which I highly recommend. It’s economical, it’s healthier, you lose the weight faster, etc. etc.
      Diapers
Clothes- just onesies, jammies and socks are necessities
toys- not many for a newborn, you can pick them up slowly and second hand toys many times have almost no wear
crib-get it second hand from craigslist or classifieds
Diaper bag- any large shoulder bag will do
Mobile – fun to have but definitely not a necessity
Monitor- nice to have but definitely not a necessity (get it second hand)
Bottles- only a couple if you breast feed
Highchair- not until the baby can sit up
Safety gates- not until the baby is mobile at five or six months
Pacifiers- maybe, if baby doesn’t suck his/her thumb
Am I missing anything-yes first I’ll list necessities then I’ll list the things that are just nice to have.
      **car seat
*infant tub- if you’re not a pro it’s difficult to bathe a newborn without one, I like the one that fits in the kitchen sink.
*blankets, about six receiving blankets and at least two regular baby blankets depending on your climate.
*burping cloths or substitute a pkg. of cloth diapers
*you’ll need several sets of comfy pajama type clothing, babies dirty they’re clothing often so how many changes of clothing you have will decide how often you are washing clothes
*2 sheets for whatever bed the baby sleeps in
*Toiletries such as diaper cream, baby wash/shampoo (I love the lavender one), baby powder, baby lotion

Things that are nice to have
*portable crib/bassinette- I like the one that’s an all in one portable crib/bassinette and changing table, You can set it up in your room for when the baby’s a new born and everything will be at your fingertips in the middle of the night.
      * Carrying sling or pack
      * One set of hand covers
      * Stroller, possibly one that works with your infant car seat
*waterproof cloth mats, to lay under them so that you don’t have to change their sheets as often

I’m sure I can think of other helpful things, I have six children you are more than welcome to email me. Also remember, many very nice things are available second hand at a tremendous savings.
      Congratulations!

  4. QUESTION:
Extremely tight budget–what baby items MUST I buy new?
DH and I were NOT intending to get pregnant right now, since money is extremely tight, but that’s life, eh? Anyway, I have a lavish (ha!) budget of 0.00 over the next six months to buy baby supplies.

My inlaws offered to buy a new carseat with all the current safety features. I can get a lightly used crib that complies with current safety recommmendations from a friend for free. I can sew well and am more than willing to make sleepers, receiving blankets and the like, if I can’t get hand-me-downs.

Would love to know what other low-budget mothers have done for baby supplies. What are the ABSOLUTE essentials? Is there anything, other than a carseat, that MUST be purchased new?

I have no problems at all with second hand stuff, as long as it’s safe and serviceable, and I don’t care in the least about logos, brand-names, or matchy-matchy baby stuff.

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations on your pregnancy, even if it was a surprise! New babies need very little beyond your love and care, so 0 is plenty. We’re told that our babies need a lot of stuff, but most of it isn’t necessary at all.

Plan on breastfeeding – that will save you at least 00 over your baby’s first year of life (more if your baby needs hypoallergenic formula, and if you factor in increased laundry and health care costs when formula feeding). Most women are able to breastfeed with no challenges. It’s a great idea to call your local La Leche League while you’re pregnant, so you can learn about the normal course of breastfeeding and have resources for help if needed (and it’s free!).

When your baby gets a bit older, consider making your own baby foods. Much cheaper and healthier for baby. You can probably find a book at your local library with ideas for home-made baby foods.

Consider cloth diapering. You can buy used prefold diapers and good-quality wraps which will last you throughout your baby’s diaper-wearing days. You can make your own baby wipes with baby wash cloths (or sew your own). There are lots of ideas at cloth diapering sites for saving money on diapering. You don’t necessarily need a changing table; you can put a pad down on baby’s crib and use that, or get a changing pad that fits on the top of a dresser. And instead of a diaper bag, you can use a regular backpack or a tote bag.

Don’t spend too much on baby clothing. Your baby will grow fast and won’t need much at first. Check out thrift stores for almost-new baby clothes, or ask for hand-me-downs.

The one item I used every day was my sling. We almost never used a stroller (and used it to carry the diaper bag more often than the baby), but the sling was so useful. And a baby in a sling doesn’t need a bouncy chair or a swing – mom’s body is a much nicer place for baby to be.

  5. QUESTION:
    Baby and Parent Questions?
    1. What are 15 products you need for a child? (from a few months old to 3 years old)

    2. What are 10 safety precautions that should be done in order to child proof your home?

    3. What qualities make an effective parent? If you were to have a baby right now would you be an effective parent? (don’t think about the money and supplies needed to raise your child)

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like a homework question to me…

  6. QUESTION:
    Am I missing anything?
I’m nine weeks pregnant, and I already went shopping for baby stuff, in yellow because I don’t know the sex. Is there anything you can think of that I could be missing? I’m not going to shop for clothes until I know the sex, though.

    What I have bought:
    Size 1 Pampers
Cherry wood crib that forms into a daybed, then toddler bed
    Mattress
6 – 5 oz. baby bottles and extra nipples
    Stage one toys and movies
    Baby books
    Infant car seat
    Stroller
    Changing Station
    Baby hangers
    Dresser
    High Chair
    Bouncer
    Crib sheets and blankets
    Reciving Blankets
    Nursery Decor
    Stuffed animals
    Infant swing
    Bibs
    Burp-up Towels
    Bottle scrub brush
    Einstein Play Gym
    Baby Moniter
    Breast Pump and supplies
    Safety gates
    Safety Cabinet locks
    Electric socket covers
    Doctor suggested Medicines
    Bathing Materials
    Grooming Materials
    Baby bath seat
    Glider
Okay so I need a Bumbo seat, a Jumperoo, Newborn diapers, bigger bottles, a Boppy, a CD player and classical music and bible bedtime stories! Anything else?
    Oh, Vaseline! Great idea!
I am planning to breastfeed, but I have to have bottles for when I go out to feed it with pumped breast milk.

    • ANSWER:
There’s a good chance you won’t need newborn size diapers, they will give you some in the hospital and there’s a good chance that by the time you are through those your wee one will be in size 1.
You will want a baby thermometer, a nasal aspirator, and infant acetaminophen (Tylenol). Those are things you will want to have on hand. I needed mine the week after I brought my little one home.

I would wait though, there’s a good chance you will get many of those things as gifts.

There are some things on your list that you won’t need:

Baby hangers – trust me, you won’t use them longer then a few days.
Stuffed animals – they are a hazard in cribs and your baby won’t even notice them until they are much older

Some of the things you will not need until MUCH later (play gym, toys and movies, safety gates, cabinet locks, outlet covers, bath seat, Bumbo (we have one that we didn’t even use, I would wait to get that until you feel you NEED it, many babies won’t even use one), high chair), but if you have the space to store it then it can’t hurt.

I am not trying to bring you down or anything, but just trying to give you a realistic idea of what you need (and don’t need).

      Good luck :)

  7. QUESTION:
Can someone with legal experience regarding the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act answer this?
I am a Work-At-Home-Mom. I make custom baby carriers and sell them. Each of my carriers is one-of-a-kind. I buy my fabric from nationally trusted retailers such as JoAnn Fabrics, etc. I do not buy loads of fabric since I make them on an order-by-order basis (so I can customize for my buyer). How is the CPSIA going to affect me in particular? I am not the one importing the fabric or thread. Shouldn’t my supplies be tested before I buy them? Also, even if they are tested, I usually only buy fabric remnants instead of whole reels. It would be ridiculous for me to ask for certificates for 1 yard of fabric. I feel like this whole thing is going to put me, and a whole bunch of others like me, out of business. How can I possibly afford to have each and every one of my baby carriers tested for lead?

    BACKGROUND INFO:
Congress passed a law in August 2008 called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This law came about because of the numerous recalls of children’s toys in the past two years and specifically the issue of lead in the toys. While I applaud the attempt at making children’s products safer, the law as stands, will actually remove many of the products that we have turned to in place of those made in China.

As of February 10th, 2009, ALL children’s products sold in the United States will need to be certified to be lead free and many products will need additional testing. To be certified, the final product sold needs to have each component on it tested for lead. This sounds wonderful when you think of all of the “Made in China” children’s products that are out there and all of the children’s items that are mass produced (mostly imported). HOWEVER, think of the handcrafted items sold within the US. Think of any children’s item that is a ready made item that has been personalized with a child’s name (it would need to be retested because it is the final sold product that needs to be certified). Think of the children’s items that are sold at craft shows, garage sales, ebay, consignment shops and fundraisers. As of February 10th, it will be illegal to sell any children’s products without certification, no matter when it was produced. Collectible vintage toys and trains? A “banned substance”. You will not be able to donate items for charity because they are a “banned substance” since they are not certified. This applies not only to toys, but all products such as books, shoes, clothing, school supplies, sporting equipment, jewelry, etc. that are possibly intended for children 12 and under.

    • ANSWER:
Write to your congress person and your states senators. Ask them to sponsor a bill exempting domestic craft products from testing provided that the components are lead free.

Then contact everyone you know and know of involved in making and selling domestic craft products and ask them to do the same thing.

If enough people write enough members of congress corrective action will be taken.

      Hope this helps

Baby Safety In The Home

Children, Young People and ...

Baby Safety in the Home

Author: David Cummings

All parents strive to keep their baby safe at all times and everywhere they go. Baby will spend most of her time at home and it is important to keep the following things in mind as you prepare your home for your child.

Electrical outlets are a hazard for your baby. Babies explore their worlds by using their fingers and electrical outlets are very tempting. You can buy outlet covers at most discount and hardware stores. Along with covering up the outlets, watch for electrical cords hanging down within baby’s reach. Baby can get tangled in the cords and injure or strangle him/herself, as well as pull an object down on him/herself. If your baby is in a walker, make sure all cords are out of reach of the baby as he/she reaches out from in the walker.

Other hazards for your baby are cleaners, home chemicals and medications. Make sure you keep all cleansers, chemicals, and prescription and non-prescription medications out of baby’s reach. Even with cupboard latches, it is always best to keep dangerous materials out of your child’s reach.

Windows with or without screens can be hazardous to a baby. If the baby is able to push on or lean against the screen or go near an open window, you will need to prevent baby from getting access to the window. It is not uncommon to hear on the news that a baby has fallen from a window and gotten seriously injured or killed by the fall.

Once your baby is crawling, open or unlatched doors are a danger to your baby. Little fingers can get pinched in doorways. Make sure you hook or latch the door or screen door high enough that the baby cannot unlatch it or somehow get the door open.

Know your pet and his temperament and. If you are not able to be in the same room as both your baby and pet, it is safest to keep your baby away from your pet.

If you have other children, make sure they know your “rules” about how to handle the baby, what is safe for the baby, and what is not safe. Being a big brother or sister carries with it a responsibility of keeping the baby safe and helping mother and father do so, and this responsibility usually lies with the parent(s)/caregiver if the sibling is quite young.

When anyone on the premises is using a vehicle or lawn tractor, make sure your baby is not in the path of these vehicles. The best protection is for the caregiver to know where the baby is located at all times and to protect him from all danger. Your baby should be placed somewhere the caregiver knows is safe such as a play yard or swing if you need to leave the room for a few moments. Accidents can happen quickly and can be severe.

Being a parent/caregiver for a baby is a huge responsibility; take your responsibility very seriously.

  2. QUESTION:
Are baby gates a safety hazard in your home?
I can’t tell you how many times I have tripped over these things. I’ve bruised my knees and feet countless of times. I even have the gates with the doors on them but my little one loves to hang out by them or try to climb up them. So, I almost always have to step over them. I feel so dumb because I’m wondering how I can mange to trip so many times. My husband thought it was funny until he nearly broke his foot from tripping over it. Has this happened to you?

    • ANSWER:
I kid you not I broke my left elbow twice tripping over them, once holding my son. It wasnt a bad break but they suck big time. They are a hazard for me but an awesome tool for keeping my son out of an area

  3. QUESTION:
What can I do about in law that left 6 month old baby home alone?
my brother and i was gone 20 min came back unexpectedly and found out his wife had left their baby home alone. She claims she just ran down the road and was only gone a minute when i counted at least 5 minutes while my brother was inside before she came home. I told my brother to bring the baby and to leave her and he got mad at me and then later they claimed it was not that big of a deal. How many other times has this happened or will happen. Do i call the police or DHS or encourage them to go to counseling. It just makes my blood boil I also believe there is abuse going on meaning shes the abuser she seems pretty nutso. I am at lost i dont want to be a betrayal to my brother but i fear for the safety of the baby
well i called CPS all i can do is wait

    • ANSWER:
Document the incident and, if it happens again or you suspect domestic issues that affect the welfare of the baby, call Child Protective Services.

  4. QUESTION:
How do I retain my sanity while staying at home with baby?
I have recently left a busy, high profile carreer which I loved to stay home with my 9 month old baby. This change happened when my husband found a job to advance his career and we moved to a small town in West Virginia. He works long hours and I am home alone with baby for 10-11 hours a day.

I made the choice willingly and do not regret it as he will only be a baby once and I was tired of having other people raise him. Only now I find myself terribly bored and lonely (baby is not the greatest conversationalist). I have not been able to find a new mothers group in the area or anything which would provide adult contact with baby in tow and my internet time is limited to while he’s sleeping for safety reasons (he’s climbing on everything).

Any suggestions are welcome! Thanks :)

    • ANSWER:
I have been a SAHM since my son was born. When he was about 10 months old, we moved out of state for my husband’s job. I didn’t know a single person within a 200 mile radius.

To keep myself from getting “crazy” I try to make sure I get out of the house at least once each day. I made it my mission to find every local park, check out the zoo, the library, all the shopping malls, etc. I joined a church, and I found a mother’s group on http://www.meetup.com that’s pretty fun. I also got the “events calender” from the local library and the local community center and I try to attend EVERYTHING I can find that would be age-appropriate for my now 19 month old son. Some days, when there isn’t anything else going on, I just take my son out for lunch somewhere and chat with the waitress lol.

I have to work hard and make a conscious effort to get out of the house and meet people, but it’s worth it.

  5. QUESTION:
Husband wants a baby, I want to wait…how to avoid hurt feelings?
My husband and I just came back from a romantic vacation…we surely needed it and haven’t been away together alone in awhile. We have a 5 year old starting kindergarten in a few weeks and I’m starting back to work as a teacher (took the summer off as I usually work summer session with my students). In my eyes, we are just starting on a great path financially and I’d like to take our son to Disney in April before we start to try to have another child. I also am “stationed” at a school district over an hour from home…and the drive can be treacherous in the winter. My goal is to eventually bring my job closer to home for safety and financial reasons (gas prices still stink!).

My husband…on the other hand…is very passionate about having a second child. He’d like us to just throw caution to the wind and start trying. He’s more up in the clouds over the idea and I’m more realistic. Problem is, it’s very hurtful for both of us because we’re not seeing eye to eye.

I’d like to just get done what we need to before we bring another baby home, but my husband sees it differently.

Now I’m starting to think maybe I’m being too rigid….but am I really? Of course I think I’m right…but my husband thinks he’s right….so what to do here??

    Thanks! :)

    • ANSWER:
Hey! As I said before try to get as much of your goals done as soon as possible if you know you would like to try soon (as in the next year or so)
But I am a firm believer that you can never be really ready for a baby whether its the first, second, whatever. Personally, I would go for it, (I would love to have a 2ww partner LOL) but you gotta make sure your ready, yourself.

      ((((Hugs!!!))))

      = )

  7. QUESTION:
Do you have animals in the home with your baby?
Ever since I found out I am pregnant, and my hubby took over litter box clean-up, I have pondering getting rid of my cats because I have been told horror stories about having a baby in the home with animals…

    1. Do you have animals in your home with your newborn baby?
    2. Do you think people should have animals around their newborns? why/why not?
    3. Do you take any “steps” to ensure safety around the animals?

I’m very interested as to what other people out their do with their animals when the new baby is on it’s way. Thanks! ;)

    • ANSWER:
We have two cats that we’ve had since before my three children were born, and we’ve had no problems at all.

The only thing we did was to prevent the cats from sleeping in the crib before the baby came so that they wouldn’t think that was their bed. For a while, I kept it loaded with baby stuff so that they couldn’t jump in there. Then, I wrapped a piece of cardboard with double-sided tape — the cats don’t like the sticky feeling on their paws and will jump right out. Once in a while, the cats did climb in the car seat, high chair, or bouncy seat, but I didn’t see that as a big deal, just some hair for me to clean off later, and they never did it when the baby was in there.

Whenever we brought home a new baby, we’d let the cats sniff the baby’s hat that s/he had worn in the hospital and then sniff the baby (if they wanted to). Mostly, our cats simply avoided the babies. I think they were afraid of them. Even now, our older cat completely stays away from the kids and wants no part of them.

Our litter boxes are in the unfinished basement, and we kept the basement gated off, so that was no problem when the kids were crawling and toddling around.

We’ve worked with the kids to teach them how to pet gently, and even when they’ve been a bit too rough or pulled a tail, the cats have never retaliated — they just ran away. And our cats also have their claws, so that hasn’t been a problem either.

  8. QUESTION:
Newborn: Where does baby sleep when you bring him home??
Im due January 4th and confused about where to have the newborn sleep. I have a baby safety class in 2 weeks, but am getting the babies room ready now so would like to know what I need ready.

I have a crib and a pack n play that has a basinette. I assembled the basinette and the hooded part kept coming un-velcroed. It’s dissapointing.

But anyways, where should the newborn sleep & for how long? When is it safe for baby to sleep in crib?

    • ANSWER:
Newborns can sleep in a crib as soon as they come home. However, many parents (myself included) find it more convenient to have the baby in a bassinette close to their bed for the first few weeks or months. This way you don’t have too far to travel for middle-of-the-night feedings. This worked well with my daughter as I was able to fall asleep faster. Some small babies may also feel overexposed by being in a big crib all by themselves. Since our daughter was premature, we decided that a smaller bassinette would be more intimate and probably help her sleep better.

If you do decide that a basinette is best for you, I would recommend that you not use a travel bassinette. Rather, look at borrowing or purchasing a used “moses basket” or other bassinette (see the attached links to babiesrus). You may prefer to have your baby sleep in a crib if you are a very light sleeper. Otherwise, you’ll be waking up with every single sniffle, sneeze, and grunt (which babies do a lot of).

      Best of luck!

Adventure Playset

The Magic of Creating an Adventure Playset

One of the joys of parenting is watching children play and have fun, and adventure playsets provide hours of joy and laughter for many children. Neighborhoods are filled with a variety of playset options, incorporating everything from basic to extravagant. While choosing a playset can be quite challenging, it can also be a great deal of fun.

Flexibility and Choices Lead to Creativity

Parents have many choices when it comes to picking an adventure playset for their children. Sets can be customized in a number of ways to meet the interests and needs of each individual family. Every family has different ideas for their playset depending on the ages and interests of the children, and the marketplace provides the flexibility to tailor playsets as needed.

Choice is certainly the cornerstone of the adventure playset market. Materials may range from molded plastic to metal to wood, and many playsets incorporate multiple types of materials. Sets may be small and geared toward young children, or sets may be large and encompass a great number of features. Some playsets are well-suited for a small space in a moderate yard, while others can entertain a full neighborhood’s worth of children.

Tailoring a Playset to Suit Your Needs

No two families are exactly alike. Head to any playground, and you will see children choose a wide variety of different pieces of playground equipment. The same thing happens with a backyard adventure playset. Some families know they need climbing opportunities, while others focus on slides. The beauty of the adventure playset market is that many sets are able to be highly customized and tailored to appeal to your own specific children. In addition, many structures allow the ability to modify and add-on features down the road, so the playset can keep up with your child as he or she ages or develops new interests.

Drive through any neighborhood, and you will see a great deal of variety in adventure playset structures. The beauty of choosing a playset is that you can incorporate your own children’s ideas, needs and wants into the design, and create a play area that will last for years. The structures may be big or small, metal, plastic or wood, and there are quality options that can be found for any choice.
