How Do I Keep My Baby Safe From Accidents in My Own Home?

Author: David Boast

From birth though their early years, our children are completely dependent on us as parents and carers for their safety and well being. Although most of us are aware of the need to follow our moving baby around constantly checking for dangers signs as they explore, very few new parents are aware of the potential dangers newborns are exposed to in the home.

Although not yet on the move, babies under six months are capable of rolling movements that can suddenly destabilise a bouncer balanced on a table, or roll off a changing station if unsupervised, or simply work their way to the edge and fall off an armchair or sofa. In the year 2000, a staggering 20,000 injuries were recorded for children under the age of six months, and over 83% of those were caused at home. As a simple rule, join your baby at their level (on the floor) and try wherever possible to keep your child away from higher surfaces. If you do have a changing station, make sure you use a changing mat with a built in stability or harness system.

As baby starts to move, a whole new world opens up to him, and a whole new load of worries open up to us. Areas that were previously out of reach become a playground to explore for our little ones, and areas of our home we previously never considered could be hazardous, suddenly keep us awake at night.

There are three golden rules to babyproofing:

First look down. Try to see your home from your child’s perspective. Make a checklist of all potential dangers that your child may encounter, both as they are first crawling and as they learn to be more secure on their feet.

Secondly look up. Sooner or later you will have a mini mountaineer on your hands. That high up cupboard, the bookshelf, even the top of the television all become places your child may want to conquer.

Thirdly and most importantly, be prepared!

Preparation is the key. From the earliest stages, make sure you are prepared for bath time, for meal time, for changing time, for play time for sleep time. Make sure you have everything you need within reach. If for any reason you do forget something, never leave your child unsupervised, not even for the amount of time it takes to run from the bathroom to the closet for an extra towel. As baby learns to move and wants to discover on their own, prepare the world they are discovering and remove all potential dangerous obstacles or your child’s potential to reach them.

In coming articles we will focus on exactly how to baby proof different areas of your home, but a great source of information to get you started is the ‘Safety House’ feature at www.safetots.co.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes?
from garage sales and second hand stores. It’s our first baby, and I know she’s just trying to help us since we don’t have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i’ll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them.

I’d like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!

I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused” :(

    Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!

    • ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

    • ANSWER:
      Yaaaa…you don’t need 95% of that stuff…lol

Okay….so here is what I needed and used in the 1st week

      Infant car seat
Stroller (I actually had 2…1 regular and 1 jogger..but the jogger was borrowed…I didn’t need it, but was super glad I had it as it was easier to work with on hills and in the park etc)
      Diaper bag
      Diapers and wipes
Sleepers/onesies/socks/pants/shirts any other clothing you want/need
      Crib and crib sheets
      Monitor
Bassinette or playyard or cradle…whatever you want to use while baby is in your room beside your bed – i still don’t own a playyard, we used a borrowed cradle and that was fine…my son is 16 months…sometimes I wish I had a playyard, but you definitely do not need one
      Breast pump and storage bags
Bottles/nipples (if you are breastfeeding, you only need 1 or 2 bottles…I had 3 and never opened the 3rd bottle…I only used 1 and left 1 at my mom’s house so that if she was watching him she could put frozen breastmilk in the bottle…hence the breast pump
They don’t need toys for some time…they don’t play with toys in the first week…but it is nice to have some car seat toys for entertainment
A play mat is very nice to have
      Soothers (2 or 3)
      Soother clip
      Vitamin D drops
Bouncer/swing…I had both, but only needed 1..he would sleep in the swing, it was awesome!
Breast pads and cream (For sore nipples)
Burp cloths…but you can use old towels too
Infant Bathtub (very cheep…just a regular one, you don’t need the ones with hoses/showers etc)
Wash cloths/towels..again you can use regular ones
      Mild baby bath soap
Gripe Water (excellent for gas etc) non-alcoholic
Cornstarch (Not peneten etc for diaper rash) this works way better and is much milder on skin!

      Hmmmm…that is about it!!

There are things that are nice to have…and you can totally decide and ask for those things too…but the must haves are above!

      Hope this helps!

  3. QUESTION:
    Child proofing sharp cabinet handles?
We recently moved into a home the has fairly sharp, hard-edged metal kitchen cabinet handles. With a toddler and baby on the way, I’m concerned with the safety- mainly bumping into or worse, falling onto one of these handles with their delicate skin.

I know an option is replacing all of the handles with a rounded edge option, but there are over 35 handles and I know the cost would be great, not to mention fitting may be a challenge.

Does anyone know if there exists any type of clear plastic/rubber flexible guards that we can place around the handles? I know they sell knob covers and corner guards, but these are longer thin handles—anything exist like a cut-to-size flexible material we could wrap around?

    Appreciate any ideas.

    • ANSWER:
Mpreucil, well, in addition to sharp cabinet handles, I gotta tell you that there are other serious hazardous conditions from which you should consider protecting your newborn, and they include the list found in the following handy article linked below:

I hope you find the above to be very helpful, as I’m sure you will.

      Congratulations, too!

    • ANSWER:
HOLY CRAP! 90% of this is ridiculous. Things you’ll actually need:

      Infant car seat
Car seat base for 2nd car
A stroller (you pick what kind you want, but you don’t need four different styles!)
Some toys – you’ll get a ton of these as gifts, too.
Clothes – you’ll get two tons of these.
Breast pump if applicable; bottles and nipples if applicable. Unless you have a preemie, sterilizing isn’t necessary.
Basic medical stuff – bulb syringe, nail clippers, thermometer, and some Tylenol.
Some burp cloths, or just use towels.
      A few blankets.
      Diapers.

The rest, you can do without or pick up in 2-3 years when you actually need it!

Before giving birth to your bundle of joy, you have to choose from baby dressers that can add plenty of storage to your newborns nursery room. This way, you can ensure that you will have all things set right before you bring your newest family member home.

When choosing from different dresser styles, you must never let your budget bring you down. Do not be afraid to splurge a little for your babys dresser. After all, a durable dresser with elegant finishes will last longer than any other kind of dresser. Getting the best value for your money is easy if you know how to choose between substandard and high-quality pieces of furniture for nursery rooms. Here are some factors you need to consider when choosing from different kinds of baby dressers:

Materials and designs

A sturdy and well-designed baby dresser will effortlessly compliment each of your bedroom furniture. The sturdier the dresser is, the safer it will be for your baby when he starts to explore the room with his hands and feet. Take your time when comparing different kinds of dressers and inspecting the materials used for manufacturing them.

Dressers made from durable hardwood are not only elegant and chic. They also last longer than any other materials used for nursery dressers. Their multiple compartments will make it easier for you to organize baby outfits and nursery essentials according to your liking.
Size and dimensions

Do not forget to measure the nursery room before shopping for dressers. It must be big enough to store baby clothes without occupying too much of the rooms floor area. Remember, this will be your baby’s first bedroom. Leave enough room for him to crawl and to walk around as he gradually grows up and becomes a brilliant toddler.

Safety issues

When shopping for baby bedding, cribs, dressers, and other nursery essentials, you must never compromise your child’s safety and comfort. Although dressers with intricately designed knobs and decorative handles will look good on your bedroom, they can be big problems for toddlers who may end up getting themselves badly hurt. Avoid purchasing dressers with parts that can potentially harm your child.

Always consider these three factors when shopping for a baby dresser. With a little creativity and foresight, you can easily find baby dressers that can spice up your baby’s special nursery room.

How to Handle Your Newborn Baby

Author: John Rope

Baby is a precious creation- you must handle him/her with utmost care. Your baby lacks muscle control, so you have to take extra precautions while holding, bathing, feeding, and dressing the baby. Lift the baby slowly and don’t rush when you carry her/him. Newborns are completely dependent on you.

If this is your first baby and have never handled any baby before, baby’s fragility may be overwhelming for you. For many parents, just holding the tiny baby is nerve-wracking.  Below are few guidelines to follow and within a couple of days, you can become an expert.

  1. Holding the baby carefully-For a new parent, who has no experience with infants, simply picking up and holding the little one is scary. Take suggestion from older member in the family and friends. Your baby’s head is big and heavy compared to other parts of the baby. Therefore, it is very important to support your baby’s head and neck when you carry the baby up and lay down. A good way to pick the baby up and put him/her down is with your whole arm, which supports spine, neck and head at the same time. When you are going to wake up your baby, don’t shake him/her, just tickle in the feet and the baby will be up. Some parents like to wrap their baby’s legs and hands in a blanket until they are used to it.
  1.  Feeding the baby- Feeding the newborn is something that every new parent worries about at first. At this period, babies drink either breast milk or formula. If the mother is breastfeeding, then feeding will most likely occur in every few hours and if the baby is bottle fed, then the gap between feedings may go up to two to three hours. Don’t forget to burp the baby after each feeding.
  1. Diapering the baby-Everybody knows how to change a diaper, but when you have to do it yourself, it may get messy. You may feel awkward in first few times, but slowly with little practice, you will handle the newborn with ease. While changing diapers, use a waist-high table with safety straps. Lay the baby on the diaper, fold the front half of the diaper over the baby and tighten it with attached tapes. Check the diaper in 5 to 10 minutes to see whether it is wet or not.  Do not allow the baby to be in wet diaper for a longer period, which may lead to skin infection.
  1. Dressing the baby-Excited parents spend enough money to buy good clothes for their newborn baby. Whichever clothing you prefer, look for garments that are easy for you to put on and takeoff the baby like large necklines are easy to slip baby’s head. While dressing, support your baby’s head in one hand until he/she is 3 months old.
  1. Bathing your baby- Bath time can be enjoyable if you know how to handle the baby while bathing. Until 10 to 15 days after birth, the baby is generally given a sponge bath and after that a daily bath. While bathing in tub, make sure to hold the baby in one hand tightly, otherwise the baby may slip. Right after the bath, wrap your baby in a towel and cover the head.
  1. Make yourself sure to fasten the car seat or stroller every time when you are going out. Avoid bouncy or rough roads as this may upset your baby’s stomach.

It is better to ask for your family and friends to get through this time, which can be disturbing. Nurses can also show you how to hold, bath, change, and burp your baby. Though you may feel worried about handling a baby, within 2 to 3 months, you will get used to a daily routine and turn into a professional parent.

We have an actual handle, like a lever. My son just walked right outside when my husband went out to take the trash. Scarey!
My older kids go outside to play, and cannot lock the bolt from insde.
Do they make safety covers for lever door handles?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, they do make them. I’ve only ever seen them online–here’s a link to an ebay auction http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290012071958&category=117027

  2. QUESTION:
I need ideas for baby safety on screen doors.?
My son is 18 months old and we have a latch that keeps the door shut, but now he is tall enough to reach the door handle (it isnt a knob it is a handle that goes across about 2 inches) Well we have been keeping the big door open because it is summer. I need some ideas on how I can keep the screen door shut, if there is a latch or something on the market when I can stop him from opening the screen door all the way. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
You can buy a little gate that hitches onto the door! Im sure they sell them like at Walmart!

  3. QUESTION:
Where can I find the best safety latches for baby proofing cabinet doors?
I bought the Wal-Mart brand and they are not very practical. I am looking for ones that are easy to install

    • ANSWER:
I live in earthquake turf and we use them to keep glass and other objects from flying out of cupboards during quakes. I’ve used several different types, but have found the easiest ones to both install and operate are the ones that Lowes sells. They also aren’t as unsightly as many of the other ones and the plastic they are made out of doesn’t snap with “adult” strength pressure.

  4. QUESTION:
Which brand is the best to use for baby safety?
I’m trying to stop my little one from opening doors, and drawers. I have the brand safety first, using their cabinet
& drawer latches, and the ones with the tension release strap, but i find the sticky stuff holding them in place, just fails…everytime. I sick of wasting money on a product that doesn’t work. What can I use to stop my child opening drawers, cupboards, shower doors……if you know something that definately works let me know..

    • ANSWER:
I believe I have the same kind of cabinet locks and you are supposed to screw them in. The adhesive tape on them is so they stay in place while you screw them into the cabinet.

If you have cabinet doors with the handle together, I suggest just getting the slide locks. They had them that looked like a U shape and you just slid the end on and then pushed buttons on the top and bottom to slide them off. I cant find them anymore though :( BUT now they have these ones that look like a diamond and 2 zip tie looking things that you loop through the center diamond piece… they are mommy proof too though LOL! I bought both of these at walmart.

For the doors, they have door knob covers at walmart too. OR you can buy a gate and not let him or her in the kitchen and close the bathroom door…

  5. QUESTION:
    Door slamming waking up baby?
My parents, husband, son, and I live together in a medium sized home, with one bathroom. The bathroom is next to my son’s room and our room. For some reason, the bathroom door slams shut when a person closes it (Unless they are conciously thinking about closing it gently, which my husband and I have trained ourselves to do!) It wakes my son up about 6 times out of 10, and it’s really frustrating. There is one repeat offender, my dad, who is so sweet and feels terrible when he forgets and wakes up the baby. I really don’t want to have a conversation about it everyday, as it makes my dad feel bad, and it doesn’t get anywhere. Are there any safety/baby-proofing items that will prevent the door from slamming when shut too hard? This week, it has been the 4:45 door slam that starts my day…..

FYI: We run the AC or a fan every night in my son’s room, and have a sound machine that plays all night, which helps him sleep, but does not drown out the slam….

    Thanks in advance :-)

  6. QUESTION:
Are baby gates a safety hazard in your home?
I can’t tell you how many times I have tripped over these things. I’ve bruised my knees and feet countless of times. I even have the gates with the doors on them but my little one loves to hang out by them or try to climb up them. So, I almost always have to step over them. I feel so dumb because I’m wondering how I can mange to trip so many times. My husband thought it was funny until he nearly broke his foot from tripping over it. Has this happened to you?

    • ANSWER:
I kid you not I broke my left elbow twice tripping over them, once holding my son. It wasnt a bad break but they suck big time. They are a hazard for me but an awesome tool for keeping my son out of an area

  7. QUESTION:
How to prepare toddlers for new baby…?
I just found out I am pregnant, due in October. I have two daughters, who will be 4 and 3 when the baby is born. My main concern is them hurting the baby. Not intentionally, but like trying to pick it up or tipping over the crib or something. I can’t watch them every second, and they are pretty quick(and sneaky!!). My oldest daughter knows how to get child safety door locks open. What can I do to help prepare THEM for the baby?

    • ANSWER:
Buy them baby dolls of there own and show them how to hold the baby correctly in a way that will not hurt them. Explain to them the rules of being around the baby. That if they want to hold the baby they need to be sitting down on the couch and just tell them they need to only walk around the crib and look were they are walking so that they don’t trip.

  8. QUESTION:
Baby DOOR BOUNCER experiences… would u recommend one?
Hi there, My partner would like to get our son a door bouncer but I have to admit im a bit worried about the safety aspect of them…

What are your experiences with them… Horror stories???

Which one would u recommend, price is not an issue??

    • ANSWER:
we had a lindam door way bouncer and i would def. recommend it. it was on sale in asda when i bought it and got it for £10. best buy i ever made! my son used it daily from about 4 monts until he was too heavy for it at 8 months. he absolutely loved it and i could get the dishes done without him crying for attention.
i too was worried about the safety and for the first few times my son was in it i’d sit right next to him to make sure nothing happened. i soon realised it was safe and relaxed. they are very safe if put up right. sometimes baby will get really excited and really bounce but the bouncer didn’t move at all.
at christmas we brought it to my parents house and i was even more sceptical this time as the doorways were a little different and didn’t look as sturdy as ours but again, it was perfectly fine. just follow the guidelines.
but i would recommend it to anyone. it really made life easier when my son was younger.

Infant Safety – A Refresher

Author: Bryan J Buckner

As the proud father of our second child, I found the need for a refresher course in infant safety and thought many of you could probably use one also. Whether you are a first time parent or expecting number 9; you’re children should be your number one priority. I find that there is some very good, consistent, and accurate information that every parent should adhere to so you’re little one is getting the best care possible.

Did you realize that accidents are the number one cause of death in children. As is the case with most accidents, most could be easily prevented, therefore it’s very important to put your infant’s safety first. Here are a few infant safety tips that apply to all newborns. With the help of resources such as www.keepkidshealthy.com we’ve composed the following infant safety tips:

  • Make sure your infant is secured in a rear facing infant child seat in the back seat of your car. This is the law until a babies first birthday and there weight reaches twenty pounds. Putting your infant’s car seat in the front passenger chair is not only unlawful, it’ really dangerous, especially if you have side airg bags.
  • Take the time to read and install the infant seat properly according to the instruction manual. The best car seat won’t be effective if it’s not installed correctly. So you’re child is larger than average and weighs more than 20 pounds but is still not a year old. If your child has outgrown his car seat before he is one, consider buying a larger seat that can fit a child up to 30lbs while he faces backwards until your child is one year old.
  • Bringing the little one home can be very stressful for mom and dad. With my  first child I was so concerned about her well being that I couldn’t sleep (even when she did). I wanted to be able to see her, to make sure she was breathing and that everything was OK. The use of a video monitor made our lives much easier during that first year.
  • Make sure the crib is safe and secure; it should not have spaces between the bars larger than 2 3/8 inches. Anything more can allow baby to get their head or neck stuck in between.
  • Don’t by a cheap crib mattress, make sure yours is firm and fits very snug within the crib. The crib should be positioned in a quite room, with the ability to restrict light and to maintain a consistent temperature. Avoid using anything that could potentially cause smothering. I advise keeping the crib free of everything except the mattress, a snug mattress cover; then ‘”swaddle” the infant tightly and lay on his back.
  • Doctors overwhelmingly say, Back To Sleep: meaning put your baby to sleep on his back (sleeping on his side is not as safe, especially if he can roll over onto his stomach) to prevent SIDS. When I was a child we were almost never placed on our backs, instead the stomach was the place to be. With that said, make sure that anyone who will be caring for your infant understands and accepts this. Sometimes it is very difficult for grandma to understand “back to sleep” they want to do it the way they remember. Be very firm with this. BACK TO SLEEP is the way to go to help prevent SIDS.
  • To prevent falls never leave your infant alone on a bed, changing table, or with another child. In the first few weeks after our first child was born, my wife was fighting severe “sleep deprivation”. She lay ed down on the couch with baby on her chest, and quickly fell asleep. She was awakened by our little one’s piercing scream. She rolled off mommies chest and onto the floor. About a 3.5 foot fall. If your tired and just can’t seem to console your little one, do the best you can then place them in the the portable baby car seat, buckle and secure. Now you can close your eyes for a few minutes, knowing that baby is safe.
  • Don’t allow smoking around your baby PERIOD.

These are just a few tips to ensure infant safety. Hope you find them helpful.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Can you cut your cats nails with infant safety scissors?
I have an unopened package of infant safety scissors (that I do not intend on using for both baby and cats). They need their nails trimmed, and I cant afford to go buy ones specialized for animals right now. Will these work for them in a safe, comfortable way? I hope this doesn’t sound ridiculous! Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
I have always used nail clippers. They are cheap and when they dull I get another pair. I have never ever used animal clippers or scissors. I don’t like the way they do the job and how they handle.

  2. QUESTION:
How concerned should I be about using a infant safety seat in a 2006 Nissan Frontier King Cab ?
We’re expecting a baby in October, and I currently drive this Nissan extended cab. The manual details the infant safety seat guidelines, and an extension is installed at the base of the rear “jumpseat”. It just looks kind of “rigged”, and maybe not the ideal. I’m curious about real world experience with infant seats in mid-sized extended cab (not crew) pickups like the Frontier. Thanks !
Based on the 1st response to this question, let me clarify. I’m not asking whether to use a seat or not, that’s a given (duh). I’m inquiring into experiences with this vehicle and rear facing infant car seats in the small seats of extended cabs. This question is based on the fact, that even seeing the instructions on how it’s done, it doesn’t look that great…and I’m likely to change vehicles because of it. I’d simply like to hear some real world experiences with these trucks and carseats. Hopefully this will help avoid the type of response we started with here. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
If the manufacturer recommends a certain installation technique, you can bet the farm it has been studied and is the safest way to install the seat. Don’t mess with your baby’s life.

  3. QUESTION:
How do you adjust a base on an infant safety 1st car seat?
On the base that goes with my daughters car seat there is a handle that says pull to adjust base. I pulled it but it just went back in. Do I need to have the car seat in the base for it to work or what do I do? I’m not sure where the owners manual is.
I dont want to use it with out the base it works just fine with the base. But there is a handle on the base that says pull to adjust and I was wanting to know how it adjusted it.

Where in Phoenix can you find free parenting and infant safety classes?

    • ANSWER:
These classes are almost never free but you should check with your local Salvation Army or Dept of Social Services.

  7. QUESTION:
Where can I find an infant helmet for atv safety?
I am trying to not only find a helmet for my infant but also a safety harness or something to make it safer for her where can i find this?

    • ANSWER:
I don’t believe that any company out there makes a helmet for an infant, short of a bicycle helmet that may fit. There is no company that makes a safety harness for infants, or a harness/seat belt of any kind for an ATV. Reason being, what if you need to bail off because you lose control? I know I would not want to be strapped to an ATV. I have only had to “ditch” once and if I hadn’t, it probably would have killed me if I was strapped to it. To be candid, if you lost control and had to ditch would you want the infant strapped to it…pretty good chances your infant would be crushed, especially if you are looking at a roll-over or tumble situation. Many states have laws against passengers on an ATV unless it designed for that purpose (Polaris makes one for example) or vehicles like the Yamaha Rhino.

Long story short, you are looking out for your infant. If you are going “putting around” with her, get a small bike helmet unless the child has a large head, then you should be able to find a small helmet at a motorcycle shop. They make helmets for the little ones that race in the 50cc class, but those kids are normally about 5. Next option is get something like a Yamaha Rhino. You do not want to strap your child to the ATV…..Righting a rolled ATV isone thingg, but not with a crushed child attached to it. Sorry, I know it is not the answer you are looking for, but it is the truth.

  8. QUESTION:
How do I make sure a used infant seat meets safety standards?
A friend gave me an infant car seat it is really nice but someone told me they “expire” after five years and you’re not supposed to use them. How do I find out about my car seat?

    • ANSWER:
I’m not sure because I’ve read everywhere that you’re not supposed to re-use car seats. That’s why Babiesrus does that annual “trade-in” at their store—to encourage parents to trade in their used car seats and other gear for a discounted price on new gear so that parents won’t sell safety gear to a second-hand store.

How to Care your New Born Baby

Author: bruce bud

Few newborns look picture perfect at birth. They have many variations in normal appearance – from color of the skin to its texture to the shape of the head. Some of these differences are just temporary, part of the physical adjustments a baby goes through. Mentally, mostly all babies are awake and alert during the first few hours after birth.

images?q=tbn:ANd9GcSO5PwWWB3RlphJwJntCXt

A newborn’s body is extremely vulnerable to injury. Soft flesh instead of muscles and cartilages instead of bones is what constitute a baby’s body. A newborn requires body care due to these simple reasons. Certain parts of a newborn’s body require extra care than others. These are mentioned below:

Baby’s Skull

Baby’s skull does not get fully formed till a long time. Complete formation time varies from child to child. Due to this, cradle cap is a harmless condition that often occurs in newborns. Severity levels also differ from mild; where scalp may turn flaky and produce dandruff, to severe; where scalp turns yellowish and scaly leading to crusty patches.

Easiest way to overcome this is to rub in mild vegetable oil or olive oil into a baby’s scalp at least twice a week. Oil must be allowed to stay for about 15 minutes. Use a soft comb to remove the flaky skin and a mild shampoo to keep the scalp clean.

Baby’s Fingernails

A baby’s fingernails can be his own enemy. Soft in appearance and definitely softer than your fingernails, these can be sharp nevertheless. If allowed to grow unchecked, these can be harmful for the baby. An active baby while flailing his arms can easily scratch his face or other parts of body.

A new mother’s apprehensions are quite understandable, but trimming your baby’s fingernails is not going to rip them off from the roots. A baby’s fingernails are soft and can be trimmed by biting also. If you find the idea of “biting to trim” a bit too much to handle, you can invest in baby clippers that are meant to provide extra care while trimming.

Baby’s Genitalia

The vaginal area of a baby girl needs to be wiped with a moist clean cloth during diapering and bathing, taking care to wipe from front to back to avoid transferring bacteria from the anus to the vagina. Genital area of a newborn baby boy also requires frequent cleaning to avoid diaper rashes.

  7. QUESTION:
My baby pulled over a pitcher of hot water on himself. What should I do?
I had boiled some water for his bottles. He is 10 months old and still drinks formula…so I still boil his water for safety. Anyway, I had boiled the water and put it away in the refrigerator. My @$$hole husband came into the kitchen and was arguing about dinner. He opened the refrigerator and was looking for something to eat. I came over to to where he was an threw out some leftovers. While he was standing there arguing about dinner and I was getting a plate out the baby crawled into the kitchen and grabbed the handle to the water pitcher. The water had been in the fridge for about 5 minutes and when it wasted on him he screamed. I scooped him up and was kicking my foot at the same time because the water had wasted on me, too.

I thought all was well after we dried him off. There were no scaldings or burn marks. So I thought everything was cool. I waited a little bit longer (like 45 minutes) before taking off the diaper (because he was afraid and was holding on to me). Right down front was a small amount of swelling and a couple of blisters.

He has been up playing and is generally in a good mood. He doesn’t act as if he is in pain or anything. I have been watching him closely to ensure he is okay. But I need to know what to do. Can I treat this at home or should I go over to the emergency room even though this happened a couple of hours ago?

Oh my husband is nonchalant and acting as if he doesn’t care. HE is trying to make it like it is all my fault. This is not a time to point fingers…it is BOTH of our faults because we were too busy arguing to even notice when he crawled between us.

    • ANSWER:
if he seems to be okay..and not in pain i would suggest just watching it for a while and see if it gets any worse. i would also suggest maybe just apply a cool wash cloth to the area and maybe a little cream.

  8. QUESTION:
My baby pulled over a pitcher of hot water on himself. I took him to the emergency room and they took pictures?
This is an update to the previous post below. I took him to the emergency room and they took pictures of him and gave him some ointment and gauzes. He has to go see his regular pediatrician Monday.

Why would they take pictures of him injury? Am i going to jail? Are they going to take my kids? It was an accident!!

    • ANSWER:
They have to do this. They are documenting what happened because a 10 month old can’t tell them. They would be bad doctors if they didn’t. I know it’s easy to become defensive about this. My daughter got bumps on her bottom and they thought they were warts. They recorded this info (they weren’t warts in the end…they went away with diaper cream.) I was upset at first, when babies have warts in that region it’s a sign of sexual abuse. But at the same time, I’m glad there are people out there looking out for those who can’t defend themselves. CPS might be contacted, but I doubt there will be an investigation of any kind. CPS gets many reports (I’m a teacher and I’m obligated to report anything my kids say.) Now if something else happenes they may come interview you and ask about what happened. CPS isn’t wanting to take kids out of homes, just those that are truely hurting their kids. They know accidents happen. They know the doctors are obligated to report. My little cousin had her hand on the ironing board when her grandma was ironing. The got a pretty bad burn and they took her to the ER. They also took pictures but wrote down what Grandma had said. There wasn’t an investigation.

Parents buy a lot of things when a baby is on the way. They have to prepare the nursery, buy clothing, pick up accessories like a baby carriage, play pen, and car seat, and make room for toys. New parents also need to learn about how to care for their infant, at home as well as on the go. Sure, newborns spend a lot of time in their crib, but eventually they will have to leave their secure environment and meet the outside world.

Nappy bags should be in the top ten of every new parent’s wish list. They are indispensible, and are an absolute necessity if you want to take your baby for a walk, want to go shopping, or intend to visit friends and family.

Nappy bags have evolved significantly from the olden days, when they were bulky and plain. In the past few years, wonderful, creative styles have emerged, bringing color and motifs to the one bag that will dominate your life until your toddler has been potty-trained. Parents love a stylish nappy bag, even if traditional tote bags are still available in stores, as well as online.

Modern mums prefer a nappy bag that is sleek and very efficient. The tote of their choice should have lots of zippers, and an outside pocket for personal belongings. An ideal nappy bag has a pouch for a mobile phone, a credit card holder, a zip coin pocket, and a key clip. The tote’s main inside features should include:

Printed zip-out lining that can be removed for washing;
A secure, insulated bottle holder;
A quality, waterproof changing mat with a Velcro closure;
Side stroller straps so the bag can be securely strapped to a stroller;
Emergency pocket with zipper for wet items, such as burp cloths or dirty clothes;

Fashionable nappy bags are convertible and can also be used as a laptop bag once the liner has been changed. Babies grow up and it would be a shame to waste a perfectly good bag, right?!

Zippers are essential in all nappy bags. Without them, you may be in trouble. Babies can be very active, and if they make you bend down for any reason, e.g. picking up a toy junior threw out of his carriage; the content of your shoulder bag may fall out, if it is not properly stored in zipped-up pockets.

To determine which nappy bags would be perfect for your needs you will need to make a list of the items you intend to carry along. To get a visual idea about the room you will require, line up all the items you want to take along on a table. Seeing everything together will give you a clear picture of the smallest size nappy bag you should consider. When buying your nappy bag, take into consideration that your baby will grow up, and that soon you will be lugging more and larger items around. Just think, what a waste of money and shopping time it would be if you had to switch bags after a couple of months!

4mum has all the best baby bags to help you with your baby. Getting good nappy bags is one of the best investments you can make with your new born baby.

Treating Flat Head Syndrome with a Baby Helmet

Author: Mark Etinger

Ever since the National Institute of Health established its “Back to Sleep” campaign in 1992, which encouraged parents to sleep babies on their backs to avoid the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, flat head syndrome, technically known as positional plagiocephaly or brachycephaly, has become more common. Why? Newborns’ skulls are extremely soft and malleable, and the backs of their heads can flatten easily as a result of the time they spend sleeping.

A baby with flat head syndrome may not have a glaringly obvious flat head. If your baby faces the same way every time he or she sleeps, has even slight flat spots at the back or side of the head, slight bulges in the forehead, or uneven ears (one ear may appear more forward than the other), he or she may have positional plagiocephaly, which basically means the baby’s head is not the usual, symmetrical shape that it should be.

Finding that your baby has a flat head can be a scary thing for parents, who naturally want their baby to be perfectly formed. But the good news is, there are many ways to prevent flat head syndrome. One is to ensure your baby has plenty of “tummy time” – place your baby on his or her tummy in infant play areas, and put your baby upright in an ExerSaucer when playing and eating. Your baby may squirm because he or she prefers to lie down, so start slowly. Even 5 or 10 minutes at a time can make a big difference.

If your baby’s head does look misshapen, then don’t panic. If tummy time or turning your baby’s head to the other side when he or she is sleeping has not helped the problem, then see your doctor immediately about a baby helmet. Most cases of flat head syndrome are easily treatable with a cranial remolding helmet, but the window of opportunity for treatment is small, so don’t wait to act if you’re concerned. Helmets can be used on babies aged 3 to 18 months, and treatment usually works best if started by 4 months, when the skull is most malleable.

A baby helmet can do wonders to correct the shape of a baby’s head. These helmets are made of ultra light, state-of-the-art orthotic materials, and they help guide a baby’s head into a more rounded, even shape by providing a controlled tunnel for growth. Helmets are generally worn 23 hours daily for 3 to 4 months, depending on the severity of the problem, and are designed to provide maximum comfort to the baby.

If you embark on baby helmet treatment for flat head syndrome, be sure to choose an orthotist who’s conveniently located, because the helmet generally needs to be checked and adjusted every 10 to 14 days. And if you’re worried about the look of the helmet, don’t: baby helmets are cute, and come in a variety of colorful designs. A baby helmet is short, pain-free therapy that will have a positive result to last a lifetime.

    1. A lot of people think that there is some kind of positive to falling and hurting yourself and learning. Babies aren’t that analytical. If a kid skateboarding falls and hits his head. I don’t think he’s a better skateboarder after falling. He might put a helmet on though.
    2. A babies head doesn’t solidify until age two, at age 1 there brains are most susceptible to injury. Just medical Fact..
    3. Most of us would be just fine not wearing a seat belt, Should I stop wearing mine because of that fact?
    4. Babies have been wearing helmets for Hundreds of years..They where called pudding caps http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=ht…
    5. The helmet cost will drop to .99 if mass produced.

    • ANSWER:
I am expecting my first child later this year, and I have no interest in buying it. I do see that some parents would buy it. It just looks very bulky. I think it would help if it wasnt so bulky but also protected the baby. You should also try to work with babysrus or other baby stores to sell. Best of luck

  3. QUESTION:
    BABY SAFETY STATEMENT!!?
I looked out my front window this afternoon and I saw a woman riding her bike wearing a baby sling….with a BABY IN IT, no helmet!!!! I just want to make sure noone else out there is doing it…The baby will get HURT!!!! anyone else seen anything crazy like this before??

If I had gotten the window open quicker or been outside I would have said something!!!

    • ANSWER:
Some people just don’t think before they do things. A couple weeks ago when I was on my way to the store I saw a guy riding a bike with a toddler (probably about 2) on his shoulders!! So here he is riding his bike, and he’s trusting that this little boy is going to be able to hold on to his head tight enough that he won’t fall off. (by the way neither of them were wearing helmets)

  4. QUESTION:
    Bicycle safety?
I recently bought a bicycle with the rear child seat attached. I bought it used at a thrift store so it didnt have safety instructions for the seat.

How old does the child have to be before they can ride in it? My 7 month old sits up perfectly by herself and is very strong. But I cant find a safety helmet for anyone under age 3. I have tried walmart and toys’r'us.

Can I put my daughter in the seat? Do they make safety helmets for young babies? If so, where can I find one?

    Thanks for any help!

    • ANSWER:
I believe all bike seats and bike trailers require a child to be at least 1 year. There are helmets available for toddlers, but I believe they also say for 1 year and older. Our local hospital does fittings and helmet sales but only for children over 1 year.

  5. QUESTION:
Tell me your funny story about child’s safety products?
I am so sick of seeing all the “must have safety products for babies and kids”. I’ll start- stupid helmets for healthy kids learning to walk, and ridiculous knee pads for babies learning to crawl!!!
I am a mother- now I’m wondering what kind of lawsuits lead to these products? It’s overwhelming walking through the “safety aisle” at BabiesRus!

    • ANSWER:
What’s your point….Do you have kids then it’s nothing stupid about putting those inquires out there

Back years ago they didn’t have all these green lights and that’s when every body file to suit in court,so That’s a reason for this

      Hope this helps!!

  6. QUESTION:
Why does baby throw himself backwards? And what suggestions do you have?
Looking around online, I found that there are other babies who do this, but no suggestions about how to deal with the situation or how long it continues.

My son was sitting up unsupported at 6 months, now at 11 months I still must sit behind him because he will suddenly throw himself backwards without warning. My husband thinks we should buy him a helmet so he can play a little more independently once in a while as his attachment to me is extreme. I would not leave him in the room alone anyway, so I am fine with continuing to sit behind him… though it would be nice to be facing him so we could interact when he plays.

Has this happened with your baby? How long did it continue? Why does it happen (he catches himself when he wobbles in other situations which shows he does have regard for his safety), and when will it stop?

Thanks for your input and suggestions…

    • ANSWER:
This is why we have play mats. Kids have been doing this forever it is a sensory response and teaches them flexibility and balance. This is one of many boundary experiments baby-child will try. A helmet would actually mess with his balance development just have a soft surface like a play mat covered with a thick towel to cushion his head – he will stop in a few days. A couple of good bonks and he will realize he doesn’t bed that way nor can he protect himself from a fall. Let him experiment with a safe surface and he will be just fine. Hope this helped!

  7. QUESTION:
Should the human genome be altered to improve safety for the human brain?
I think it should and it would be easy to program our genes to install shipping peanuts in the lining between our brain and skull when we’re babies. It would be like having a crash helmet on the inside that you never have to put on. I think it would also save people from drowning because it makes our heads float better.

    • ANSWER:
it would be possible if we could command the cells to make different formula in the DNA. however theres a good saying on consequences in playing god. one little change can cause you toto have no eyes or legs.

  8. QUESTION:
Legal? Baby/toddler getting rides on quads & motorcycles? If not, what consequences?
I saw a neighbor today riding their toddler about 1 1/2 years old on a quad the mother made the father put the baby in a back pack type of baby holder so the baby was atleast attatched to dad, but neither had helmets, ofcourse baby didnt, they dont make them that small. I have seen the dad riding the baby around before on his mini motorcycle, with out a carrier, or a helmets, just holding the baby with one hand and steering with the other. Is this legal? Would the dad, and or mom be arrested if they police saw this? Would the baby be taken by cps, for child endangerment? I just dont see how this could be good for such a small child. At first the child was screaming, and the mom was yelling for the dad to stop that the baby was scared, the dad kept going. The toddler stopped crying, but it wasnt laughing and having a ball, the child was mostly grabbing onto the dads shirt really tight, and kinda not making any emotions.

I believe that the dad was doing this for his own pleasure, with no regards to the baby’s safety, and no regards to whether or not the baby was enjoying himself, and no regards to the mother who was begging him not to take the child for a ride, and yelling for the dad to slow down.

When I was about 2 years old my father used to take me on motorcycle rides around our neighborhood, he would strap me around him with his belt. My mom hated it, I can remember. I do remember enjoying it, being with my dad.

Is this legal? If not, what kind of trouble can parents get into? What would likely happen if authorities witnessed this happening? Thanks to all who answer, and God bless everyone.
We are in Northern California, USA.

I dont want to turn them in, just maybe have a talk with them and let them know if its illegal that they could get in trouble.

    • ANSWER:
In today’s world this would be considered Child Endangerment…

Child endangerment occurs when an adult caregiver or parent places a child in a dangerous or inappropriate situation. While not technically the same as child abuse since it does not involve directly causing harm, child endangerment carries stiff penalties up to and including prison time.

Few crimes engender feelings of revulsion in American citizens like those involving children. Being accused of this crime can have long lasting affects on one’s future, even if the accused is innocent.

It is common for a parent or a caregiver to have no intention of committing this crime. Carelessness, negligence or recklessness may lead to a child endangerment charge.

The baby’s first tooth is a time of celebration for quite a few parents. In fact, many parents are really relieved when the tooth will come out so that the child won’t to any further extent get sleepless nights in addition to them. However, a number of babies are actually born with teeth, literally! Babies might be born with one or possibly 2  teeth and this may definitely startle most parents when they get to perceive the teeth on their newborns.

Typically, medical professionals from developing nations can just simply take away the teeth as soon as they can. Of course, this scares many of parents until they are told of the risks of the baby having their first child tooth or teeth when they are born. These form of teeth are named natal teeth. Most people think that when a baby has these teeth they’re either mentally retarded or they’re born too old. But, neither of these speculations are true with what these teeth will likely be all about.

The natal teeth are rarities plus they only occur one in every 2000 or so infants, however, if they aren’t removed they can cause some pain to the child seeing that these are not firmly set on the gums, actually they can be movable, there are some cases where the tooth gets swallowed by the infant and bring about some issues once they unexpectedly get extracted when feeding on the nipple. This can even cause soreness on the mother’s nipple when the child is feeding. There are particular situations that the tongue of the child will probably be wounded if the child has these. You ought to ask your pediatric dentist on what you’ll need to accomplish to take away before it can possibly harm you and your child. Remember, these first teeth are not safe, so once removed; you possibly can just keep them for the sake of posterity and even date its removal. Some don’t even need any anaesthesia when removed, they are that loose.
