Baby Safety Showers — Not Just Fun and Games!

Author: MY FIRST ROOM

If you’re looking for a creative and different way to honor new moms- and dads-to-be and help them get ready for their baby, consider throwing a baby safety shower instead of the usual “blankets and snugglies” shower.

Traditional baby showers are great fun and they offer new parents an opportunity to prepare their ”nests” for the arrival of a new baby.

Usually a baby shower is intended to give new parents a leg up in acquiring essential items like baby clothing, bath supplies, bottles or nursing equipment, toys and games, and special blankets or other treasures like silver cups.

I’ve always viewed baby showers as one of the best ways that a community can come together around the birth of a new child.

It reminds me of one of the best aspects of the ”old days” when a town, village, or neighborhood considered the birth and caring for a new child its responsibility, too.

A baby safety shower is in keeping with these old communitarian traditions.

It’s more than just fun and games, it’s really a learning experience for the whole community where all the activities revolve around baby and home safety.

Parents and caregivers certainly have a great time, but they also leave with a higher awareness of ways to keep their new babies safe at home.

The shower’s theme may focus on a variety of safety issues (see the Baby Safety Checklist below), including child-proofing one’s home, nutrition or health.

Also, you can arrange a baby safety shower for as many people as you can fit in your party space.

At bigger safety showers, all of the moms and dads in attendance — not just the couple being honored — can visit a variety of exhibits where safety-savvy parents illustrate home safety information with games, puzzles, songs, prizes, and other activities.

At smaller showers, it might work better to have one person lead the group in discussions and safety games.

Usually baby showers involve a collection of family and friends of the new parents, but safety showers are also a good way to create and promote partnerships within the broader community.

By offering, for example, to distribute baby products donated by local stores, or by providing information from local community health service providers, you can enhance your ties with the local business community and build your relationships with local health and social service organizations.

All this creates goodwill in your community and it provides your invited parents with welcome information, products, and services.

Use your creativity to create a baby safety shower for your personal situation.

The key to throwing a safety shower that will be rewarding for all involved is providing important safety information in a festive and inviting setting.

So — have fun, and learn about the all-important matter of better safety practices for your household.

BABY SAFETY CHECKLIST

The guidelines below were developed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

It’s important to remember that, while these standards are based on sound principles, certain parents may disagree with some of them.

For example, the bedroom guidelines state that a baby should never sleep in the same bed as an adult.

However, from the Attachment Parenting perspective, sleeping with one’s baby is considered an important aspect of bonding and is even believed to possibly lower the incidence of SIDS.

Therefore, I recommend using the following guidelines as just that, guidelines, which should be examined carefully in light of your own views and beliefs about baby care giving.

Always consult your pediatrician if in doubt of the best way to proceed.

  • In the bedroom:

Put your baby to sleep on her back in a crib with a firm, flat mattress and no soft bedding underneath her.

Follow this advice to reduce the risk of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

To prevent suffocation, never put babies to sleep on adult beds.

Make sure your baby’s crib is sturdy and has no loose or missing hardware.

This will prevent babies suffocating or strangling by becoming trapped between broken crib parts.

Never place your baby’s crib or furniture near window blind or curtain cords.

This will prevent babies from strangling on the loop of the cord.

To prevent falls, keep children away from windows.

  • In the bathroom:

Keep medicines and cleaning products in containers with safety caps and locked away from children.

This will prevent children from being poisoned.

Always check bath water temperature with your wrist or elbow before putting your baby in to bathe.

This will prevent burns to a baby’s delicate skin.

Never, ever, leave your child alone in the bathtub or near any water.

This will prevent children from drowning.

In addition, keep children away from all standing water, including water in toilets, 5-gallon buckets, and pools.

  • In the kitchen:

Don’t leave your baby alone in a highchair;  always use all safety straps.

This will prevent injuries and deaths from the baby climbing out, falling, or sliding under the tray.

Be sure to use safety straps in strollers and baby swings.

Use your stove’s back burners and keep pot handles turned to the back of the stove.

This will prevent deaths and injuries from burns.

In addition, keep children away from tablecloths, so they can’t pull down hot foods or liquids on themselves.

Lock household cleaning products, knives, matches, and plastic bags away from children.

This will prevent poisonings, bleeding injuries, burns, and suffocation.

  • In other living areas:

Install smoke detectors on each floor of your home, especially near sleeping areas;  change the batteries each year.

This will prevent deaths and injuries from fires.

Use safety gates to block stairways and safety plugs to cover electrical outlets.

This will prevent injuries from falls and electric shocks.

Keep all small objects, including tiny toys and balloons, away from young children.

This will prevent choking and possible death.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
looking for a chair for baby of 9 months with safety straps.Only the one he has at the moment tilts forward?
he keeps trying to stand up in his chair, and actually went completely forward the other day, luckily I was in the room with him when it happen. although he did hit his face on the floor but nothing too serious, but could of been. I have been looking everywhere for a baby chair from 9 months upwards with safety straps as he is not walking yet,and not sturdy enough to balance himself. The chair he has at the moment is for birth to infant FP.Can anyone help

    • ANSWER:
If you’re talking highchairs, Peg Perego is great. If you’re talking a bouncy chair, which I think you are. Kids shouldn’t be in one after they learn to sit, it’s dangerous. Try putting him in his excersaucer, or if he doesn’t have one, that would be a good investment. Otherwise, put him in a play yard where he can’t escape from, but can move around safely

  2. QUESTION:
How to get mildew out of safety straps for a carseat?
I am having a baby in about 3 weeks and got the carseat out of storage. I noticed that it had a bit of mildew on the straps. It was likely put away without being cleaned by my husband. So I am wondering what will take out the mildew. The straps are a golden tan color and they are Graco. Thanks for any help!

    • ANSWER:
While you *can* clean the straps off to a degree… you are not supposed to immerse them in liquid because it can weaken them and put your child at risk. With mildew… I really wouldn’t be happy with just a surface cleaning.

If the seat itself is not expired you can contact Graco with the model number and other info and purchase a new set of straps. That would really be your best option for maximum safety at minimal cost.

  3. QUESTION:
Which brand is the best to use for baby safety?
I’m trying to stop my little one from opening doors, and drawers. I have the brand safety first, using their cabinet
& drawer latches, and the ones with the tension release strap, but i find the sticky stuff holding them in place, just fails…everytime. I sick of wasting money on a product that doesn’t work. What can I use to stop my child opening drawers, cupboards, shower doors……if you know something that definately works let me know..

    • ANSWER:
I believe I have the same kind of cabinet locks and you are supposed to screw them in. The adhesive tape on them is so they stay in place while you screw them into the cabinet.

If you have cabinet doors with the handle together, I suggest just getting the slide locks. They had them that looked like a U shape and you just slid the end on and then pushed buttons on the top and bottom to slide them off. I cant find them anymore though :( BUT now they have these ones that look like a diamond and 2 zip tie looking things that you loop through the center diamond piece… they are mommy proof too though LOL! I bought both of these at walmart.

For the doors, they have door knob covers at walmart too. OR you can buy a gate and not let him or her in the kitchen and close the bathroom door…

  4. QUESTION:
omg .. opinion on safety straps for prams?

    http://news.ninemsn.com.au/national/878388/witness-tells-of-baby-under-train-miracle

Now my opinion is that the mother shouldnt of taken her eyes of the pram! Let alone let go of it at a train station! Very stupid and irresponsible .. but my pram came with a safety strap that goes around my wrist so things like this dont happen .. i think here in australia its a law now .. i always use it just to be safe .. what do you think?
yes .. i have let go of my pram .. when ive had the safety strap on my wrist and im on level ground .. also she was waiting for the the train so she knew it was coming .. ive never let go of my pram on a train station when im waiting to cross the road etc .. but tis couldve been avoided with some responsibility .. im not saying shes a bad mother just this one this was very stupid.. i am also greatful that te baby is unharmed!
my pram came with one for my son which i bought when i was pregnant and hes 16 months old now so that was about 2 years ago .. and i bought a stroller a few months ago and te strap is on the pram and it cant come off unless you cut it and theres a label on it saying “warning use the strap to stop pram/stroller from rolling away”

    • ANSWER:
safety straps are compulsory by law for precisely the reasons shown in that article. I was told they are compulsory on ALL strollers, not just the ones sold since the law came into effect. I don’t know if you remember the incident where the baby drowned because a stroller rolled down a hill into a body of water, but that was the incident that pushed the tether strap law through.

However that doesn’t stop lazy parents from not using them and it doesn’t stop stupid parents from cutting them off, and it is those parents who will end up with the dead babies.

  5. QUESTION:
Can you use a forward-facing car-seat without the safety tether strap thing ?
Our second car is an old pick-up with one long bench seat, simple cab. There are no anchors of any type for baby seats. We are still installing her convertible face-backwards because I read in the manual that you should never do it in the forward-facing position without the safety strap.

What do can I do ? She is getting too big to face backwards. Does anyone know of a model of seat that doesn’t require the safety strap ? Is it legal not to have it (this is an older vehicle ?)

    • ANSWER:
its not wise to put a car seat in the front seat of any vehicle. its not safe.
if the seat has a safety strap then use it. if you got no points of contact then you are risking your daughters safety.

  6. QUESTION:
I need a strap for my baby swing.?
I was wondering, is it possible to buy a safety strap for a swing that doesn’t have one. The swing hasn’t been used as of yet, but will need that strap when the baby does start to use it. Please, if you can help me find one, that would be great.
    Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
check the manufacturer’s website. if they dont have them on the site to buy u may have 2 call the customer service number an see if there is any way to buy a replacement strap. If you bought this swing new I would disassemble it an take it back to the store. if you no longer have the reciept go out an buy a new one of the same thing an put the one that did not have the strap back in the box an then take it back. The store is not losing out on money an they will not be short on inventory as they will just send the defective one back to the manufacturer an get a credit for it. Hope this helps!!!

  7. QUESTION:
Baby Car Seat Safety – older vehicles? install teather latch?
I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van

I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada

    • ANSWER:
In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.

Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.

Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

  8. QUESTION:
as a mom would you say anything, okay i’m gonna say something 4 the safety of the baby how do i?
    w/o losing a friend?

my husband is 22 & he has been good friends with this guy who is 19, for about 5 yrs. his friend just started working where my hubby does, the same shift, so he told my hubby, “hey i’ll drive since i have to come by your house to go to work.” so my husband said great, yesterday was the first time, now his friend lives with his girl friend (who is 17, and just had a baby 8 months ago) and her parents,

so my hubby comes home this morning and he was like their baby’s car seat is facing forward and it moves whenever he goes around a curve, i’m like what? so he said that the car seat literally raises up on one side when he goes around the curb. picture leaning on a motorcycle. and slides along the seat a little.

now i know they are young, but their daughter is 8 months old, and only weighs 14 lbs (she was a preemie) so i know it’s not suppose to be turned around facing forward yet & the fact that it moves, and moves that much. i was like did you say anything, he said i asked him about it and he said her parents put it in the car for them

okay now i’m just a nosy, very opinionated mom, and i can and will bite my tongue on stuff that is none of my business, but this is my business because if anything happens (like they wreck and that little girl dies) it’s on me cause i know better and i didn’t do anything about it, now i have no idea how in the instructions her parents missed the part about it being turned rear facing till 1 year old or a certain weight, nor do i know how they missed the part about it not having to be tight, but my husband said is leans and slides along the seat, so not safe

but what upset me more was i was mulling this around all morning, so i wake him up and tell him to call them and invite them up for a cookout and to play in the pool, they come up and she is like i love swimming, i told her i have a small baby pool for the kids, she puts her baby, who can’t sit up on her own in the baby pool and walks off, yes i was there, but what if i wasn’t, my son can sit up on his own, the fact that i never leave him alone has nothing to do with it. but so anyway, that’s fine, i assume she knew i’d be staying with the baby’s

when they were leaving she put her daughter in the car seat and she didn’t fasten the straps across her chest, she just fastened the bottom buckles, i was like you forgot the chest buckle, she said no it’s too hard to get fastened, and she cries because it takes me so long to get it unfastened. okay so my baby used to also but i still did it

so i said well let me show you a trick to it. so i showed her if she uses both hands it will unsnap faster, i had to buckle the baby in, but she was like, nah she’s safe as long as one of them is fastened. really how did she come up with that

so now i’m trying to figure out i should tell her that her car seat needs to be adjusted and rear facing with out hurting her feelings

i was thinking like when they come up again, be cleaning my babies and ask her to help me put it back in the car and making a comment about i can’t wait till he’s 1 yr old so i can turn it around forward or something. what do you think

yes i know i will get rude comments about minding my own business, but i’m not going to, so if that is all you have to say, don’t answer, thank you have a great night.
oh, and yes it’s a rear facing kind of carseat

    http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3237055

this is the carseat they have, i know, we gave it to them for the baby shower, and it only goes up to 32 lbs, and is meant for rear facing.
our police station installs car seats in our town, it’s where all the moms donate their old carseats to so they can give them to families that can’t afford a new one so their babies are safe in a carseat that is fairly new and still in the safe guidelines
i know i just want to shake her and say you’re a mom now, grow up and take care of your baby right. and put her safety first.

and then throw all my parenting books at her.
Celeys mommy i like that idea, i really don’t want to hurt her feelings or scream at her or damage my husband’s friendship with her boyfriend, but if i have to i will, i’m trying to be subtle about it first.

    • ANSWER:
I agree… but I think you need to just sit down and be frank with her.. tell her that her baby is not safe in that car seat and you are very concerned for her safety…tell her as a young mom you can understand the oversight (obciously you’d be lying here… pleny of young moms know the right way) and offer to show her how to do it correctly and mention if they ever got pulled over they would be cited for not having that child rear facing.

If she refuses then call CPS.. seriously. It’s moms like her that give young moms a bad name.

I feel very scared for that child and as a friend I think i is time to step in and gentle nudge her in the right direction or tke some sort of action, even if it means your hubby loses a friend.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
About how old is a 30 lb baby?
    HI guys–

I ended up with two car seats as gifts– the same brand! ha. The thing is, they got GREAT safety ratings and its defintely the brand I want. The thing is, only one of our 2 cars are currently “baby safe”– I drive a Ford Ranger and even though you can turn the airbag off, I dont think I’ll be putting baby in my truck at all.

We’ll be buying a second baby-safe car in mid or late summer. Baby is due this month, so she’ll already be 4+ months old then. The seat is rated for up to 30 lbs.

Should we keep both and plan to use the second one in 4 months or should I return it and get a larger seat when we get the second car? I dont know how hold a 30lb kid is…..

    • ANSWER:
Mty daughter is 2 and weighs 32 pounds, check to see if the car seat has a height requirement as well, some do. You can buy car seats that go from 22 pounds up to 80 pounds, so it is a front facing seat until the child is 40 pounds and then turns into a booster until they are 80 pounds. I’d return the seat and look for one like that.

  2. QUESTION:
Is there a rating for the safety of a car seat?
I just bought a convertible car seat for my 1 year old. His father and grandmother are afriad that it’s going to “break in half” if we get into a wreck. They said there is some kind of rating system for the safety of all car seats. All I can find is convience ratings and a statement saying that all car seats are safe because they all have to pass the govornments tests. So am I missing something? If I am I will definetly check into it since this is my baby’s safety but I can’t find any safety ratings.
Also, if anyone actually has wrecked in one how did that go? It’s a Cosco Scenera 22197ANQ.

    • ANSWER:
      Try this site…

  3. QUESTION:
How to pick a car seat? Convertible or infant to start?
It seems a little silly to purchase two seats in just a few months, but I’m wondering if the infant ones are safer or something?
Also, where can you find the safety ratings for baby gear? I tried consumer reports and apparently you have to pay and subscribe. Surely you don’t have to pay to know the safety of the equipment you need to purchase!!!
Thanks girls, really appreciate any help here! I went looking yesterday and was so confused….
Geez Derek easily offended? I think it’s pretty obvious I wasn’t trying to upset anyone. You’re moodier than me and I’m pregnant, lol!!

    • ANSWER:
The only time an infant bucket seat is safer than a convertible is if baby is on the smaller side (>5 to around 7lbs) Otherwise all seats have to pass the same tests for rear facing, then a different test for forward facing with convertible seats.

  4. QUESTION:
How do i check the safety of an apartment?
I have a wife and a baby girl and i am worried about thier safety. I have tried to look up thier ratings on apartment ratings and its a mixed bag i cant tell who is lying and some look suspicious , i looked at the place and it isnt horrible but i could see why it could be potentially dangerous. I know theres a risk all the time when it comes to apartments and crime has no address but i just want my family to be ok , i thought about buying a gun to protect myself and only keeping it in the home , i just dont know what to do and how to do it.

    • ANSWER:
You can always contact the local police department for crime stats in the area.

  5. QUESTION:
safety specs for 1985 toyota corolla gts?
my little toyo is my baby xD love her to death, but im worried about crash ratings and such since shes an older vehicle. does anyone know where its weak or vulnerable spots are? i dont even think i have an airbag in the thing :/

    much thankies :3

    • ANSWER:
A girl driving an AE86, you got great taste in cars. Make sure to take care of it and learn the basics of drift. It’ll help you be a better driver and avoid accidents.

No airbag in it, but it’s a japanese car from the 1980s. In other words, built like a tank. I feel safer in my 21 year old FC than a brand new RX8, because it was designed to glance off a hit, not crumble like new cars do.

There are plenty of aftermarket safety items for the AE86, in the way of cages and rollbars, which would save you even if you were t-boned by a redneck-scale truck. Look on ebay and you’ll see quite a bit just by putting in “AE86″. When in doubt, ask your fellow Hachi-Roku (AE86) owners at http://forums.club4ag.com/

  6. QUESTION:
Is it worth buying a car that has 190K on it?
I found a 2002 buick lesabre, the body is in clean condition as well as the interior, no rust, small puncture in the bumper. Has newer tires all power options, and only one previous owner. Drives really smooth. They are asking 3,000 well actually 3,950 but are willing to make me a deal. I love this car it’s so comfortable and a smooth ride. It also gets good safety ratings that I want for my baby that will be in the back. It looks like a well maintained vehicle but the km’s are what worries me. Is it worth 3,000?

    • ANSWER:
Miles are like years to a person.

It doesn’t matter the number, it matters how they were achieved.

Someone at 60 years old, might be near death. Or running marathons.

A car at 190k miles, might be about to fall apart, or good for another 500,000 miles.

It all depends on how YOU maintain it, and how it was maintained prior to you getting it.

If you want the car, get it. But if it falls apart, it’s not the car’s fault. Just remember that.

  7. QUESTION:
    Best Mommie Vehicle?
I am 15 weeks pregnant and soon my husband and I will need to purchase a new (or used) vehicle. I am interested in one that will last us through the baby stage (car seat facing backwards) and into toddler stage (forward facing car seat).

we prefer a car or small SUV/Van/Wagon that has excellent safety ratings, an easily accessible back seat (for putting babies in and out), affordable, and ALSO gets great gas mileage (a lot to ask!) The problem with our car now is a rear facing baby seat would require the front seats to be pushed all the way up!

I assume by posting this question in the toddler stage of pregnancy, moms and dads will have some good suggestions of what works and doesn’t work for them. SO, if you have a particular car that you like (or hate), please tell me about it. I am very interested in ease of use and gas mileage.

    Thanks for all your help

    • ANSWER:
I drive a 2004 Passat sedan with automatic transmission that I paid k for (brand new). It gets about 25-32 mpg (city/hwy), depending on how I drive (I have a lead foot).

LATCH installs in the backseat are very easy. There are only two sets of LATCH anchors – they’re outboard, and the inner anchors cannot be used to install a carseat with LATCH in the center position. All three seating positions have locking seatbelts, so you can put a seat in any of the three positions. All three seating positions have a top tether.

I have installed the Britax Marathon rear-facing behind the driver seat with LATCH, forward-facing in both outboard positions with LATCH, and it is currently forward-facing in the center position with the seatbelt.

I have installed the Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 forward-facing in the center position. The seat tilted to the side a little because there’s a little bump in the center of the rear seat, but it was in there tight. I had to remove the base on the 3-in-1. And, I could not get it installed as tightly as I would have liked, in either outboard position. Then again, this is not my favorite seat.

I have installed the Evenflo Triumph forward-facing outboard with LATCH. I could not get it in as tightly as I would have liked it to be – my leather seats did not want to grip on to that flat base on the Triumph.

I have installed the Sunshine Kids Radian forward-facing outboard with LATCH. This seat is in our other vehicle so I’ve not had a lot of experience with it in the center, or with the seatbelt.

  8. QUESTION:
    Forward Facing Car Seat?
We have a little girl that out grew her car seat. She is 9 months and 20 pounds. We found a car seat that has superb safety ratings but it is a forward facing seat. We have heard that infants should be facing the rear until 12 months old. Is facing our baby forward going to put her into danger?? The car seat is for someone her weight……

    • ANSWER:
20 lbs AND 1 yr. is the MINIMUM requirement. If you got pulled over (in Illinois and Wisconsin for sure), not only would you be fined, but DCFS would be contacted and they’d come investigate you due to child endangerment. The best carseat you can get is the Britax Marathon or the Sunshine Kids Radian 80–both can be used rear facing until 35 lbs and forward facing to 65 for the Britax and 80 for the Sunshine Kids.

Rear facing is ALWAYS safest. It’d be safest for adults, too, if it would work! Her neck is not strong enough to sustain her life in the event of a crash. Infant and even toddler necks are not fully developed and the space between vertebrae and the skull is quite large. If her neck snaps forward in a crash, it will separate and she will be internally decapitated. If she’s rear facing, the carseat will absorb the impact of the crash.

Also, if you’re looking at an Evenflo, Graco, Cosco (or Eddie Bauer), or Safety 1st seat, know that these seats are safety tested at 25-30 mph. Britax and Sunshine Kids test their seats at a minimum of 50 mph. Also, when they safety test seats, they use them with the straps on correctly–Evenflo and Cosco seats’ straps twist really easily, which is a major safety hazard, yet it seems unavoidable. Graco and Safety 1st have chest clips that are really easy to unbuckle and they slide up and down the harness really easily, regardless of how tight the harness is on your child. So, just because it’s been given a good safety rating doesn’t mean it has been deemed safe by consumers–know HOW it got the rating–does it pass the minimums or does it exceed them?

Organic Baby Gifts: 5 Great Ideas To Get You Started

Author: Deanna Richland

If you’re searching for the perfect gift to give to some proud parents in your life then you can’t go wrong with organic baby gifts. Not only do many organic gifts look and feel fantastic, but they also help to protect the baby’s health and reduce your carbon footprint! Here are the top five organic baby gifts to get you started.

1) Organic Baby Blankets

There’s nothing better for a newborn baby than wrapping up in a soft, natural blanket. Buying a blanket made out of organic materials means that pesticides and chemical fertilizers weren’t used to grow it – and they won’t be passed into the baby’s skin. What’s more, organic blankets often feel softer and won’t cause allergies like synthetic materials can.

2) Bamboo Clothing

Bamboo isn’t traditionally thought of as a material for clothing, but it’s becoming more and more common thanks to how versatile and sustainable it is. Buying organic bamboo clothing is a thoughtful baby gift thanks to the fact that it helps to protect the Earth’s resources at the same time as protecting the baby’s delicate skin! And the good news is that the recipient won’t know the difference between bamboo clothing and standard materials – it’ll probably even be more comfortable and last longer!

3) Natural Baby Care Products

It’s shocking just how many baby products are out there: lotions, oils, soaps, shampoos, powders and more! These can all make fantastic organic baby gifts that ensure the products are as healthy as can be. They won’t be full of toxic chemicals that seep through the baby’s skin. Natural and organic baby care products are now available from a growing number of retailers, though for the best selection you may consider shopping online.

4) Gift Baskets

More and more stores and online retailers are now putting together organic baby gift baskets for a thoughtful yet convenient gift to give new parents or expectant mothers. These can include anything from natural diapers to wooden toys, organic clothing and organic food! This is a fantastic introduction to the world of organic baby products, if the parents aren’t yet convinced.

5) Eco-Friendly Baby Furniture

If you want to give something a little bigger than the gifts above then you can’t beat well-made, environmentally friendly baby furniture. Bassinets, cribs, wardrobes and so on will usually come in bamboo (especially if you shop online) which is one of the most sustainable products out there. It also looks fantastic in a nursery!

Organic baby gifts can really be special and memorable if you do some shopping to find the right products. They’ll show that you took time to think about the baby’s future by protecting their health and the planet they live on.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What is the best baby gate for top of stairs?
I just bought the Safety 1st Perfect fit, it’s wall mounted on top of my stairs and I don’t trust it. Also every time you open it you have to readjust it loosing its one hand open feature. Please share your experience.
    Thank you!
@barfly: So I should teach my 9m old (and walking) not to fall down the stairs and yet make sure the cabinets are locked? Sorry, a gate is a must. Anybody with kids have any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I have Dreambaby gates and love them. They’re metal and come in black or white. I have the standard size at the top of the stairs, and the extra-tall ones blocking access to the bottom of the stairs in the hallway. It takes a while to mount them properly, but the instructions are good and they’re strudy once mounted. They also swing closed automatically in both directions, though the click in kind of loud so I usually close them gently by hand. I ordered them online. They were more expensive than many gates, but totally worth it. You can open the gate easily with one hand.

You need to measure the space exactly, then buy any extensions you may need. The bottom and top of the space may be slightly different widths if you have a baseboard, but the mounting cups can screw out to different lengths. The more they’re screwed out, the less secure it is (thus the importance of getting extensions, if needed, rather than screwing out the mounting cups to the maximum). I wouldn’t trust any gate enough to lean against it at the top of the stairs, but ours has held firm every time we’ve bumped into it by accident, and it’s steady when my 13 month old daughter tries to shake the bars.

  2. QUESTION:
Hardware mounted, for top of stairs, angle mounted and auto close BABY GATE?
This is a tough one! Can anyone tell me a brand that includes ALL of those things? Hardware mounted, for top of stairs, angle mounted and auto close! I have found all of those things except auto close.

Angle Mount Safeway Safety Gate by Kidco is all of those things except auto close. I think with auto close, it would be nice so I don’t have to turn on the top of the stairs and close it-it would just close on its own. And it seems safer.

    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
      Google it

  3. QUESTION:
I need a gate for the top of my stairs. Does anyone have any suggestions?
I have a 7 month old who will be crawling any day now, so I need a safety gate that fits a wide opening. The problem is that I have a super fat cat that will not be able to jump the gate to get to her litter box. Does anyone have any suggestions on who to make my stairs off limits for my baby but still accessible to my cat?

    • ANSWER:
unfortunately, i think u will have to move the litter box; have never seen ones with wide enough bars for a fat cat and if they did, u might have baby’s head stuck in it…
i love my dream baby gates; they come with extensions, but you can buy more if you need them and i think although they do pressure mount, that you also get the hardware to bolt them into the wall for stairs and such…
they are very tall, the ones i have, so i feel like they will be able to be used longer

      http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2632199

we have them in white, but the black is pretty too…and they do have the hardware for stairs, i read on there while looking them up…

  4. QUESTION:
Are there any baby gates that pressure mount from both sides?
    We have this gate: http://www.target.com/Safety-1st-Perfect-Fit-Gate/dp/B000LRIZK4/qid=1243349591/ref=br_1_14/175-2296872-2550510?ie=UTF8&node=13299941&frombrowse=1&pricerange=&index=tgt-mf-mv&field-browse=13299941&rank=pmrank&rh=&page=2

It has those little posts on one side and then the adjustable pressure thing on the other side. Do they make gates that have the pressure thing on both sides? You would think this would make perfect sense for uneven walls. I’m looking for something for the bottom of our stairs. This gate is going to be installed at the top of the stairs.

    • ANSWER:
      Yes they do…
see the following site for several offerings… they are in EUROS but at least you can get the model and see if you can find it on ebay or another site.

  5. QUESTION:
Baby Safety gate for against banister?
I am looking for a GOOD! safety gate that I can use for my stairs, I have a banister so it would have to go against that, I would prefer to have one that DOESNT ruin the banister nd wall, but I want to make sure that if my son pushes against it, it wont fall over.
It needs to be able to open because I cant climb over top of it

    thank you so much!!

    • ANSWER:
At the top of stairs, a pressure-closed gate is not adequate. It will eventually given way, leading to a big tumble down the stairs. There are gates with “gate door” in them, with a handle to lift while pushing a release button. If your stairway is not near standard size, (ours is 23″, no gate fits), there is a gate which is kind of like a window shade turned sideways, with a latch to keep it in place. Pricey, but it did work well.

  6. QUESTION:
    Are baby gates really necessary?
Our daughter is 12 1/2 months old and we NEVER put a baby gate at the bottom of the stairs, but did have one at the top of the stairs. She has, for the last month, been climbing up the stairs without us even watching her. Since she is so good at it, I don’t even fret about it. I would like to encourage her more often to go down the stairs on her stomach, but she seems disinterested in going down, though she will if we require her to. Still, I think not having a baby gate at the bottom rapidly increased her skill level, strength, and safety using the stairs and I think we are better off because we never had one. All of our neighbor’s with similar aged babies have them, and wonder why we don’t.
To clear up any confusion, my daughter has never had one at the bottom of the stairs, ever. She is 12.5 months old and why have a baby gate when you can just close your child’s door isntead? Much like my neighbor’s backyard fence they installed to trap their daughter, I think it’s easier and more useful to “teach them” as opposed to restricting them. We were the same with her walking, she was doing it at 10.5 months and now walks quickly and well without assistance.

She climbs up the stairs barefoot. My goal is for her to learn how to safely get down the stairs and I will supervise and work with her until she is confident in her abilities. We often times let her climb up the stairs unsupervised. My wife did not like at first, but she now agrees that my daughter can climb without our staring her down. Over protective neighbor’s and friends still think it’s crazy, but I think they are just lazy parents/teachers.
It’s not about convenience Brooke, it’s about teaching them and their practicing. No way do I agree that it’s more convenient NOT to have gates than to have them. That’s just ridiculous. Lazy parents have gates, engaging parents teach.
OK, I think the most frustrating part of the comments is people commenting that my daughter “can’t possibly” be able to do this on her own. Yet again this morning she did without fail. For the record, we do have carpet on our stairs so perhaps that is why I am comfortable with it. At 8 months, she held herself on a pull up bar during baby gym class, and at one year we saw her lift a bocci ball all on her own and those things are heavy. So, perhaps your problem is lack of practice, don’t fear your children, let them build their muscles instead.

  7. QUESTION:
What is a good baby gate for the bottom of the stairs?
We have one made by The First Years at the top of the stairs that has a swinging door and a foot pedal to open it. We bought two of those but when we tried to put the second one at the bottom of the stairs it was too tall. The wall with the banister wasn’t tall enough to secure one of the top corners. Now I want a gate with a swinging door for safety reasons like not stepping over a gate while going up/down the stairs while holding my son. But I need one that is the height of the normal pressure gates. Also because of how the wall is set up we can’t screw it into the wall and it has weird baseboards and stuff so it has to have the adjustable corners. Like the one at the top of the stairs in all four corners you screw out the mount until it meets the wall… does that make sense?

    • ANSWER:
Uhm…I am just 14.5 and putting this out there…but, you should really go to Babies R Us and ask someone there.
I know they have baby gates, because…well, it’s a baby store.

We’ve had a baby gate for our dog, but it didn’t have a swinging door…

I tried looking at some, and I found some, but they are kind of…pricey..which is weird…because…well, just because prices for plastic and wood shouldn’t be this high…oh well.

How Do I Keep My Baby Safe From Accidents in My Own Home?

Author: David Boast

From birth though their early years, our children are completely dependent on us as parents and carers for their safety and well being. Although most of us are aware of the need to follow our moving baby around constantly checking for dangers signs as they explore, very few new parents are aware of the potential dangers newborns are exposed to in the home.

Although not yet on the move, babies under six months are capable of rolling movements that can suddenly destabilise a bouncer balanced on a table, or roll off a changing station if unsupervised, or simply work their way to the edge and fall off an armchair or sofa. In the year 2000, a staggering 20,000 injuries were recorded for children under the age of six months, and over 83% of those were caused at home. As a simple rule, join your baby at their level (on the floor) and try wherever possible to keep your child away from higher surfaces. If you do have a changing station, make sure you use a changing mat with a built in stability or harness system.

As baby starts to move, a whole new world opens up to him, and a whole new load of worries open up to us. Areas that were previously out of reach become a playground to explore for our little ones, and areas of our home we previously never considered could be hazardous, suddenly keep us awake at night.

There are three golden rules to babyproofing:

First look down. Try to see your home from your child’s perspective. Make a checklist of all potential dangers that your child may encounter, both as they are first crawling and as they learn to be more secure on their feet.

Secondly look up. Sooner or later you will have a mini mountaineer on your hands. That high up cupboard, the bookshelf, even the top of the television all become places your child may want to conquer.

Thirdly and most importantly, be prepared!

Preparation is the key. From the earliest stages, make sure you are prepared for bath time, for meal time, for changing time, for play time for sleep time. Make sure you have everything you need within reach. If for any reason you do forget something, never leave your child unsupervised, not even for the amount of time it takes to run from the bathroom to the closet for an extra towel. As baby learns to move and wants to discover on their own, prepare the world they are discovering and remove all potential dangerous obstacles or your child’s potential to reach them.

In coming articles we will focus on exactly how to baby proof different areas of your home, but a great source of information to get you started is the ‘Safety House’ feature at www.safetots.co.uk.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes?
from garage sales and second hand stores. It’s our first baby, and I know she’s just trying to help us since we don’t have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i’ll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them.

I’d like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!

I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused” :(

    Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!

    • ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

    • ANSWER:
      Yaaaa…you don’t need 95% of that stuff…lol

Okay….so here is what I needed and used in the 1st week

      Infant car seat
Stroller (I actually had 2…1 regular and 1 jogger..but the jogger was borrowed…I didn’t need it, but was super glad I had it as it was easier to work with on hills and in the park etc)
      Diaper bag
      Diapers and wipes
Sleepers/onesies/socks/pants/shirts any other clothing you want/need
      Crib and crib sheets
      Monitor
Bassinette or playyard or cradle…whatever you want to use while baby is in your room beside your bed – i still don’t own a playyard, we used a borrowed cradle and that was fine…my son is 16 months…sometimes I wish I had a playyard, but you definitely do not need one
      Breast pump and storage bags
Bottles/nipples (if you are breastfeeding, you only need 1 or 2 bottles…I had 3 and never opened the 3rd bottle…I only used 1 and left 1 at my mom’s house so that if she was watching him she could put frozen breastmilk in the bottle…hence the breast pump
They don’t need toys for some time…they don’t play with toys in the first week…but it is nice to have some car seat toys for entertainment
A play mat is very nice to have
      Soothers (2 or 3)
      Soother clip
      Vitamin D drops
Bouncer/swing…I had both, but only needed 1..he would sleep in the swing, it was awesome!
Breast pads and cream (For sore nipples)
Burp cloths…but you can use old towels too
Infant Bathtub (very cheep…just a regular one, you don’t need the ones with hoses/showers etc)
Wash cloths/towels..again you can use regular ones
      Mild baby bath soap
Gripe Water (excellent for gas etc) non-alcoholic
Cornstarch (Not peneten etc for diaper rash) this works way better and is much milder on skin!

      Hmmmm…that is about it!!

There are things that are nice to have…and you can totally decide and ask for those things too…but the must haves are above!

      Hope this helps!

  3. QUESTION:
    Child proofing sharp cabinet handles?
We recently moved into a home the has fairly sharp, hard-edged metal kitchen cabinet handles. With a toddler and baby on the way, I’m concerned with the safety- mainly bumping into or worse, falling onto one of these handles with their delicate skin.

I know an option is replacing all of the handles with a rounded edge option, but there are over 35 handles and I know the cost would be great, not to mention fitting may be a challenge.

Does anyone know if there exists any type of clear plastic/rubber flexible guards that we can place around the handles? I know they sell knob covers and corner guards, but these are longer thin handles—anything exist like a cut-to-size flexible material we could wrap around?

    Appreciate any ideas.

    • ANSWER:
Mpreucil, well, in addition to sharp cabinet handles, I gotta tell you that there are other serious hazardous conditions from which you should consider protecting your newborn, and they include the list found in the following handy article linked below:

I hope you find the above to be very helpful, as I’m sure you will.

      Congratulations, too!

    • ANSWER:
HOLY CRAP! 90% of this is ridiculous. Things you’ll actually need:

      Infant car seat
Car seat base for 2nd car
A stroller (you pick what kind you want, but you don’t need four different styles!)
Some toys – you’ll get a ton of these as gifts, too.
Clothes – you’ll get two tons of these.
Breast pump if applicable; bottles and nipples if applicable. Unless you have a preemie, sterilizing isn’t necessary.
Basic medical stuff – bulb syringe, nail clippers, thermometer, and some Tylenol.
Some burp cloths, or just use towels.
      A few blankets.
      Diapers.

The rest, you can do without or pick up in 2-3 years when you actually need it!

Childproofing Your House

Windows with Blinds: Childproofing your home

Author:

Childproofing your home is such an important step in becoming a new parent. Many people don’t realize what needs to get done before their infant starts getting around. Most new parents are more worried about their child being abducted than worrying about the hazards that come from within their home. What they don’t realize is that there is a greater chance of getting injured at home than being harmed by a stranger.

Statistics show that millions of children each year are rushed to the emergency room with involved in an accident that could have been prevented if their home environment was childproofed correctly. Five thousand children die each year because of an accident that takes place within the home environment. The most complete childproofing jobs are done by hiring a professional. If you choose to childproof your own home on your own avoid mistakes by going room to room. The best way to save a child is to become one. Look at the hazards from their eye level.

In General:

Do you have windows with blinds? Are the blind cords left loose? Make sure with all blinds that you use hardware to tie the cords where children can not pull on them causing the blind to fall on top of them. Worse yet if cords are left loose they are more apt to cause strangulation. Make sure that beds and chairs are kept far away from blinds. If a child goes to peer out and gets their head caught in the blinds this could cause strangulation.

Outlet covers should be installed on all outlets. Don’t assume because an outlet is covered by a piece of furniture that it isn’t important. If you move the furniture and forget about the outlet you could end up having a child electrocute themselves.

Any cord that is left loose is a potential safety hazard. Make sure you zip tie any loose cords and secure them. This will prevent kids from chewing on them or playing with them.

Make sure smoke detectors are in working order and installed throughout the home. As soon as your child is able to understand start teaching them about fire safety and how to react in an emergency. They could potentially save your life one day. It is never too early to start and each year is a good chance to reinforce the concept when you change the smoke detectors batteries.

Something most people forget about is door knobs. They sell covers now that don’t allow anyone to open the door without being able to maneuver the cover. This is especially helpful in preventing falls down stairs and escape artists. Children love the outside and will attempt to find their way out with or without you. Door knob covers make this feat harder.

Curtains should also be looked at. Make sure you do not have any long tassels that could get caught around a child’s neck.

When using safety gates make sure that they are properly installed. If you are using a gate at the top of a stairway make sure it is the type that screws into a stud to prevent it from coming loose. Children will lean on these gates so make sure yours isn’t going anywhere so that your child doesn’t fall down the stairs.

Water is another source people often forget. Not only do you have to worry about drowning but also water temperature. Make sure your water heater is kept within the recommended temperature range to prevent burns.

This is a very generic list. It should make you stop and realize that many common household items can be potentially deadly to your child. Something as simple as windows with blinds can lead to the death of a child. Childproofing is not a one day job. Be sure to always be on the lookout for hidden danger within your home.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
    childproofing the house?
my son is 11 months old. If your son or daughter is around this age…what childproofing have you done? We did the outlet covers….put a cat door on the bathroom door so we could close it and the 3 cats would still have easy access, cabinet and drawer latches and tomorrow childproofing our stone cofee table.

    • ANSWER:
Great job so far! Make sure you keep your cleaners and other toxic substances on high shelves where they can’t reach them (just in case, keep the poison control number handy).
Don’t forget to “house proof” your child. A kind but firm “No!” will often be all that is needed to deter a child from touching something he shouldn’t. If necessary, tap or squeeze the hand when saying “No!” so the child associates the “No” with something uncomfortable and avoids the sensation by not touching. You may want to actually put the item right in front of him (i.e. a figurine that’s off limits) so that you can train him right then. Why is this important? Because you want to be able to take him to other people’s homes that are not childproofed, or to the store, or whatever. The same technique can work if he is grabbing hair, poking you in the eyes or grabbing your glasses or earrings.
God bless and best of luck to you and your precious little one. What a wonderful gift!

  2. QUESTION:
I’m getting a child-like pet…any tips on childproofing the house?
This is an odd question, sorry about that. But I figured that in the “pets” section if I asked this I’d get a lot of dog and cat specific answers…and this animal can get into stuff a lot easier than most domestic animals!

I am getting an animal that is more like a child than a dog or cat in the way that it can get into things. It’s not a monkey, and yes I am doing *years* of research on it before I get it, hence the question. It’s a tamandua.

They get into stuff similar to the way little kids do– open cabinets, fridges, doors, etc. I know many kids get around “standard” childproofing and I really need some good ideas on what parents do for their toddlers– things that actually work better than simple door latches. Any help here is great. Oh…and tamanduas can climb as well as monkeys can, so keep that in mind.

I’m really just trying to brainstorm and be as ready as I can *long* before I actually get the animal. Thanks for your help!
Thank you guys, very awesome help! Sharp corners is one I definately need to watch out for– they’re hemopheliacs (did I spell that right?) which is their main problem.

And the tools– I never thought of that. When I was little it was the first thing I went for too…I’m lucky these guys don’t have thumbs!

Yeah they’re anteaters…I was looking at legal animals in WA and found them on a list. Very awesome, and apparently very loving and sweet little guys.

    • ANSWER:
Okay the tamandua is way cool :) Better then any ol monkey.

Is all I can recommend is buying a few child safety products in the baby isle and trying them out when your tamandua arrives. Some of the baby locks work very well on cabinet doors where we keep cleaners ect. Sometimes too well because I can’t get them open.

It’s just going to be a trial and error kind of thing. We bought all the products and some work while some don’t. I guess it depends on the child/pets ability to problem solve.

Like for my son I use regular rubber bands on the cabinet doors, he can’t figure them out but my daughter can take them off. So we switched to those plastic locks. We’ve also put little pieces of strong silver tape on the corners of some cabinet doors were the locks won’t fit and they still can’t get them open. Silver tape also works well on door locks, last thing you need is a pet/child locking themselves in a room lol. They also make devices to baby proof you door knobs.

As for climbing don’t forget to put your breakables away. My children still destroy everything nice. And anchor down furniture pieces.

    • ANSWER:
This one is not mine, but I wanted to pass it on.

Why do we spend the first year or so of a child’s life teaching them to walk and talk, then the next dozen or so telling them to sit down and shut up?

I have heard that new studies indicate insanity is hereditary… –we get it from our children.

And a lesson learned from one of my own: Did you know that a pair of tweezers looks like it will fit perfectly into an electrical wall outlet?

Actually, at my age, I have raised a lot of children…
In fact I am still raising one…

      –He’s 35 now.

Those of you who have tykes still in nappies (diapers), know the joys of children… Like when your boss or someone you wanted to impress is visiting and starts bouncing your tyke on his knee.
You suddenly realize that even though you just changed the child, they have already explored the best thing to do in a clean nappie…

  4. QUESTION:
How long did it take your kids to progress from an army crawl to a real crawl?
My little guy is 6.5 months and started crawling yesterday. :) We’re so excited. He isn’t coordinated at all yet and pushes with both his arms and legs haphazardly. He’ll get on all fours while he’s crawling towards something, but doesn’t seem to know what to do from that position. He’s very enthusiastic, but I’m wondering how long it will take before he’s able to really get on all fours and crawl. Also, he’ll only move towards an object he wants for now. How long before he really starts “exploring” the house? As in, when is childproofing really important? :) Thanks for the help!

    • ANSWER:
It took my son about 3-4 weeks to transition from just rocking on all 4s and army crawling, to being all over the place. He started at about 6 months, and by 7 months he’s causing havoc all over the house. Shouldn’t be too long. Best of luck!

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What baby products are safe to use? Is there a list or guide available?
I am looking to give shower and baby gifts for a family member, and the mother is being very specific about safety. She does not want anything from China because of the recent recalls. I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any guidelines or lists somewhere that identifies safe products. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
There is no list that I am aware of but there are some products
available that are made in the USA and in Europe.
My favorite bath product for babies that is made in the USA is Noodle and Boo.
The best toys are made in Germany by Haba, Selecta, etc.
Also, clothes made in France and most of Europe will not have fire retardant in it(nasty stuff that gets soaked into your baby’s skin).
Some of the products are a little pricey, especially coming from Europe because their currency is very strong right now. I will list some websites below.

  2. QUESTION:
How do you know what baby products are safe?
I’m expecting my first baby (in 5 days!) and already have everything we need. But there are a few products we got as gifts (or i bought without thinking about it). We got the Little Noses survival kit that comes with saline drops and oral gel…has anyone used these products or know anything about them?
Also what items would you suggest and what items would you not suggest and why?

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations and I hope you have a very safe and memorable birth experience. I think it is great that you are taking the time to think about what you allow to come into contact with your child.

Unfortunately, there are many ingredients in products (baby, skincare, etc.) that contain chemicals that are not healthy. It is prudent to be careful.

If you have a question, don’t hesitate to jump on the internet and research the ingredients. You can look at the sites below.

One discusses the benefits of natural baby products and the other is a database that breaks down what is in over 42,000 products in the marketplace.

  3. QUESTION:
safe hair styling products for baby?
I have a 6 month old who is getting her first pictures done in a few weeks time. She has a head full of dark unruly curls. I don’t want her pictures to have these crazy curls going everywhere, but something that looks a bit more put together.

So, does anyone know of any baby safe hair products? I’ve read other places that a little gel or hairspray isn’t so bad, but to go with natural products…Any thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
There are no products out there that are safe for babies to use because it is not safe. Only tear free shampoos and detanglers. She is a baby, her hair is still growing and shaping into a style. Just comb her hair and put a ribbon or hair clips in her hair.

  4. QUESTION:
Safe baby products and bottles without phelates?
any suggestions…i know i can get glass bottles and burts bees stuff..but the smell is so strong any suggestions? thanks
i might have spelled that wrong
thanks! that makes me feel better…i will check them out

    • ANSWER:
id recommend the Playtex nursers. You can put in the liners instead of using a plastic bottle. Walmart is now making organic products to use for babies, as well as Babies r us. Its worth a try to take a look at either of those places for natural baby items.

  5. QUESTION:
I am 5 weeks pregnant and work with industrial cleaning products. Is my baby safe?
I clean offices and schools for a living and use a lot of chemicals. Although I wear gloves at all times, is my baby still at risk?

    • ANSWER:
A mask is a good idea, and gloves. But just to be safe do ask your doctor. There is a Dr expert on The Bump who answers questions if you want to do that while you’re waiting to hear back from your doctor. Here’s a link: http://community.thenestbaby.com/cs/ks/blogs/2ndtrimester/pages/expert-dr-ashley-roman.aspx

  6. QUESTION:
    Are your baby products safe?
Have you looked at this web site? It rates the safety of various baby lotions, diaper creams, baby wipes, baby washes… I found out that none of our products are considered safe.

This web site rates the safety of many different brands of baby lotion, baby wipes, powders, diaper creams, etc. I just went in and found that of the nine products we have on hand, six were rated and had a hazard rating anywhere from 3 to 6. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics advises against using anything with a hazard rating higher than a 2. Needless to say, we will be making some changes starting today!

I noticed that many Mustela products seemed to rate really badly, with some listed as highly toxic and possibly cancer causing, etc. Many of the California Baby products were rated as safe. But Burts Bees did not fare as well as I had expected.

    http://www.cosmeticdatabase.com/browse.php?maincat=babycare

    • ANSWER:
I have seen that webpage and I look at it occasionally. I think it’s helpful, although they tend towards being alarmist. Some of the ingredients they deem as unsafe–parabens, for example–have not been shown to be unsafe. Their rationale for categorizing some ingredients as unsafe seem scientifically questionable. It is still a good resource because it makes you aware of a lot of potentially harmful ingredients in everyday products, but I find that I have to do a lot of my own research to find out if their warnings are legit.

  7. QUESTION:
    Which baby products are safe?
I just read something about Johnson & Johnsons baby products being linked to cancer.

We use Johnsons Baby Shampoo & Baby lotion. Is that the same thing? Is Johnson & Johnson a different company to Johnsons?

Which products are safe to use? Our baby is 4 months old.

    Thanks

Newborn Safety Tips

By Jacoba Fenny

Taking care of an infant is a learning experience. Many new parents find themselves completely unprepared for the amount of information they need to absorb in order to take adequate care of their new baby. With a wide variety of new products aimed and infants flooding the market along with the changing of laws aimed at infant safety it is extremely difficult for a parent to manage even the easiest task.

In the past getting a car seat for an infant was simply a matter of going to the local retailer of baby goods and getting whatever was on sale. For some it was a matter of asking a relative with small children or, in some cases, simply doing without. A few generations ago seeing a baby riding in the lap of an older sibling or parent was completely normal. These days transporting an infant in a car that does not have a proper car seat installed can lead to fines and even imprisonment.

Tips For Child Safety at Home

Author: Veronica Scott

Maintaining your home for child safety is a big task but is one that is essential. There are so many things that can cause harm to children. All it takes is one mishap or forgotten element. There are many things that can be done to promote safety in the home and prevent accidents from occurring. New parents may find that they feel overwhelmed with all of the little things but in time it will become much easier to deal with.

Electrocution is one of the biggest risks that face a small child. All of the electrical outlets and plugs should be filled with safety guards designed specifically for that purpose. Most department stores and baby sections will have these outlet plugs. They seem to be more advanced all the time. They are no longer that easy to pull out and some even clip in place so that they are nearly impossible to take out. It definitely prevents little fingers from getting into an outlet running too much power for a child.

The stairs pose an incredibly large danger as well. They should always be blocked off with a safety standard gate that is approved by your country or state. Even a few stairs can cause great injury if a small child were to take a fall. It just isn’t worth the risk. Toddlers may be walking but they are not walking very well yet. Don’t make the mistake of taking the gate down too early.

If you have certain rooms that you would like to keep your children out of at a young age, find some door knob covers that make it difficult for small hands to open. Adults can work them but kids can’t which means they cannot get into off limits rooms or somehow make it outside undetected. This is something that happens too often, especially in the winter months when kids are not properly dressed for cold weather. Use door knob covers and take comfort knowing they are not escaping the house or playing in the bathroom.

Keeping your home clean also plays a role in the safety of your kids. Improper cleaning can lead to the growth of bacteria. Some bacteria are very harmful to the health such as salmonella or other bacteria caused by food. Do a regular tidy with antibacterial cleansers to ensure there is nothing lingering to hurt your family. The bathroom is a zone that should be cleaned on a regular basis as is the kitchen.

The most important thing that you can do to keep your children safe at home is to keep an eye on them. It is when kids are left unsupervised that they tend to get into the most trouble. Pay attention to what they are doing. Avoid allowing things like the phone or computer distract you from what the kids are up to.

Child safety all starts with the parents. Identify areas that are cause for concern and do your best to eliminate or reduce their hazard potential.

    Hello Parents out there,

I am hoping you can help me out…

I am looking for parents with children ages 2-6 who would be willing to take a short survey. The survey, entitled the Home Environment & Safety Survey (HESS) is designed to gather more information about the safety of the homes of children ages 2-6, and the frequency in which children suffer in-home injuries. On average the survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

I am administering this survey as part of a class project for research course in the Department of Community Health at Brown University. Your participation is completely voluntary and you have the right to discontinue participation at any time. All of the data will be reported in summary statistical form only and will not be connected with your name in any way.

I have an upstairs apartment and my entrance is downstairs and at the top of the stairs we have another door but the door doesn’t have any sort of lock on it. The down stairs door is the type that unlocks when you pull the handle. I have a 3 year old and a very mobile 9 month old. The door knob on the upstairs door is just the type you pull down on to open it instead of a regular knob. What are the type of locks that you see in nursing homes? The ones that go on both sides of the top of the door and you can lock it from either side and unlock it from either side?

  6. QUESTION:
Would you give your child an at-home drug test?
I’ve been hearing the commercial on the radio for the past few months about the at-home drug testing kit, and honestly I’m a little surprised that there’s a market for this.

I’m not naive, I know that drug use is more prevalent today than it has been in any decade past. I also realize that my son is only 3, so my views may change a lot 12 years from now. However, I would like to think that I will raise my son with enough trust in our relationship and my knowledge of him that I would know if he were on drugs, and be able to confront him about it instead of making him pee in a cup for me. To me, this seems like a horrible affront on a child’s privacy. No, I don’t believe that teenagers should be allowed to have “too much” privacy, but there are certain things that just shouldn’t be done. If my parents had done this to me as a teenager, it would have completely shattered any illusion of trust between my parents and I. There wasn’t much there to begin with, and I hope to have a much better relationship with my child than my parents did with me. If we ever got into a situation where I suspected he was on drugs and lying to me about it, there’s obviously another problem that needs to be treated as well. I’d rather approach that problem and treat it together as a team, than attacking him and forcing drug tests on him in our home. The home should be a safety zone, where a child can feel comfortable and protected, not persecuted and attacked.

That being said, I’m sure that there are situations I haven’t thought of where a home drug test is acceptable, and maybe the best approach to a problem. What do you think? Do you disagree with home testing, or would you do this with your children?

    • ANSWER:
I think there can be situations where you would need to confirm drug use. That would be a really bad situation and the truth being paramount to trust to get things moving towards rehabilitation. You’re right about the trust issue though. I believe good parents would not need drug tests to know that something is wrong. They can find out about “symptoms” from literature or wherever, and check if their child is having these.

I feel sorry for parents that would resort to testing their children for drugs. I wouldn’t do it to my own.

    49. A police officer visits Ms. Duhaime’s preschool class one morning to talk about safety precautions at home?
    49. A police officer visits Ms. Duhaime’s preschool class one morning to talk about safety precautions at home and on the street. The children listen quietly and attentively while the officer speaks. At the end of the visit, the officer and teacher agree that the children’s good behavior warrants some kind of reinforcement. Given what we know about effective reinforcers at different age levels, their best choice would be:
    a. An official-looking “good behavior” certificate given at the school’s award ceremony the following week
    b. Plastic toy police “badges” handed out just before the officer leaves
    c. A letter home to parents describing the children’s good behavior
    d. Twenty minutes of free time at the end of the day

  8. QUESTION:
At about what age would you feel comfortable letting a child stay home alone for short periods?
My daughter is too young to stay home alone, I realize that. She is 6 1/2. But she really wants to be left at home alone. We talk about safety and emergency procedures, what to do if the phone rings or there’s a fire.
I am not about to leave her home alone yet, no worries there! I am just curious as to when other parents started leaving their kids, just for short errands, no more than half an hour or so. I was thinking 8 or 9, what do you think?

    • ANSWER:
i was about 34 when i first felt comfortable about letting my child stay at home but its different for everyone! lol jks, I’d say that it depends on the maturity of the child but anywhere from 8 to 10. If a child is constantly breaking things or interested in exploring then it may be a bit older, Evaluate your child lol. Before you actually leave them at home for the first time, don’t make a big deal out of it – make it seem like an everyday event in front of the child or they may excited about the novelty and go crazy round the house or something lol.

  5. QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

    • ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.
