      Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

      My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

      As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

This is part three of the How NOT to Put a Baby to Sleep Series.  So far we have gone over 6 methods that many people use to put their baby to sleep that they should not.  In this segment of the series we will continue to provide methods that you should not use to put your baby to sleep.  You may find them humorous, disturbing or perhaps you may think there is nothing wrong at all using the following methods.

Butt Facing The Ceiling – This is also known as laying your baby on their stomach when they go to sleep.  Laying your baby on the stomach to fall asleep greatly increased the risks of SIDS and possible suffocation.  Medical Professionals do not know what causes SIDS but they have done several studies that resulted in data that has confirmed laying your baby to sleep on their stomach increases the odds of SIDS occurring.  When putting your baby to sleep you should lay them on their back in a crib that does not have pillows or blankets in it. The only blanket in the crib should be the one that your baby is swaddled in.  Remember, a great way to put a baby to sleep is in a nice firm swaddle.

Having Baby Be Your Teddy Bear – Baby care experts and every book you read out there will tell you that you should not have your baby sleep in your bed, because you could roll over on top of your baby and suffocate them.  Honestly, I understand where these people are coming from… but come on.  Everyone has put their baby to sleep in their bed at one time or another and crawled into bed to take a nap with them.  Sleeping with your bed and using them as a teddy bear are two different thing.  Also, you may want to consider a different way to put your baby to sleep other than having them sleep in your bed if you and your partner are sharing a full/double sized bed.  With that small of a bed, it is very likely you will roll over on top of your baby.  Do not get in the habit of putting your baby to sleep at night in your bed.  This will create a co-dependency issue that will be hard to break when you baby gets older.

Newborn Football In The Recliner – This suggestion of not putting your baby to sleep using the method comes from experience.  Most dads like to hold their newborn like footballs when the have the chance.  Maybe it makes us dads feel like Joe Montana….. I have no idea. The crook of an arm is a comfortable place for a baby and is also a secure location for baby to rest, in most cases.  Although this is a great position to hold your baby and even to have your baby sleep while you are awake it is an awful position to to put your baby to sleep when you end up falling asleep as well.  Do not hold your baby in this position in a recliner while watching an uneventful football game.  The heat from your baby that you put to sleep just may cause you to get sleepy and pass out as well.  One move of your arm over the recliner and arm and your baby will possible fall to the floor.  Please do not put your baby to sleep using this method.  Generally it will be unintentional.

Getting Baby to Sleep Through the Night

Do you need some help getting baby to sleep through the night? Most of us have been there, me included so I know how hard it can be, how tired you get, and how desparate you become. Below you will learn the three best ways to get your baby to sleep through the night.

1. Get a Routine: When we get older, most of us learn to be flexible and so we can find it difficult to have a set routine, or see the importance of one. But children really need structure in their lives, they need to know what is coming next; it makes them feel secure and comforted. So if you are struggling with a baby who refuses to sleep, the first thing you need to do is establish a routine. Try to be as consistent as you can about when their nap times and bed times are (some flexibility is fine and is even recommended), but have a fairly structured plan and you will see improvement over time. Leading up to bedtime, have some quiet time and read some stories and sing songs to get them in a sleep mood.

2. Have Patience: In the beginning be prepared for a big fight and a lot of crying. Getting used to a new schedule isn’t easy, and being left alone when you don’t want to be is going to be a struggle for them. But to get results, and fairly fast results you need to have a lot of patience and to let them be. You can check on them from time to time to make sure they don’t need a diaper change, but the rule of thumb for letting them cry it out is to let them do so for 1 hour. If by then your baby has not slept (this refers to nap times only) it is time to go in and get your child and forget that nap. For bedtime, just let them cry until they finally drift off to sleep. Each time the crying will get less and less until they have learned what the routine is and go to bed without a fuss. By then you won’t be saying “my baby won’t sleep at night” anymore!

3. Be Consistent: Just like needing a routine, it is very important that you be consistent when trying to establish a sleep schedule for your child. If you aren’t consistent and leave them alone to figure this out for themselves, they will continue to rely on you in order to fall asleep. Babies are smart little creatures and figure out quickly that if they cry they will get their way, as long as they cry long enough. This is why it is important to let them go for an hour. If you continually go in to comfort them, they will assume that will continue and will have no reason to stop crying until they get their way. I know it can be hard to listen to, heart wrenching even, but it is for their own good to learn how to comfort themselves and fall asleep on their own. Babies who establish good sleep habits will continue to have those as adults, conversely, those that never learn to sleep well will always have that problem plaguing them.

It is going to take hard work on your part and will power, but the 3 ways to get your baby to sleep through the night described above is the best way to break the cycle so that you can stop saying “my baby won’t sleep at night” and finally move onto the next stage of their lives. This will finally allow your family to get back to some good sleep that you desperately need as well. So, establish a routine, have a lot of patience and be consistent. It will work and will take less time then you think to get a baby with better sleep habits.

Getting baby to sleep through the night is the first step to establishing some normalcy again with your own sleep. When you are all better rested you’ll have a happier baby and a happier you.

5 Tips To Help Your Baby Go To Sleep

New parents often find that one of the greatest challenges they face is when their baby won’t sleep. Teaching a baby to fall asleep and stay asleep should be a top priority for new parents as sleep deprivation can lead to childhood obesity, depression, behavioral problems, illness and learning difficulties.

There are proven baby sleep techniques that can really help babies and parents find a better night’s sleep.  Here are 5 tips to help your baby go to sleep easier:

1. Develop a Baby Sleep Routine – Children thrive on routine and predictability. With proper nap and bedtime routines, a child will know what to expect and begin to welcome sleep as part of the daily schedule. A typical bedtime routine might last 20-30 minutes (possibly longer for spirited children) and include diaper and pajamas, a quiet game, breastfeeding/bottle/cup (for babies under 2), teeth brushing, potty (if applicable), reading, cuddling, and then lights out. A nap routine is similar to the bedtime routine, but usually shorter, about 10 minutes.

Your baby’s sleep routine does not necessarily need to include bath time. Parents simply may not have time or energy to bathe their child every day, and, until they are older and getting very dirty, there is no need. Second, if a child is spirited, a bath may actually do more to energize the child than calm him.

2. Schedule an Early Bedtime – An early bedtime is crucial to a good night’s sleep for baby. When babies and young children are overtired, they may have more difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep and will often wake too early in the morning. While many parents think that keeping a child up later at night will help with baby sleep problems, it is actually the early bedtime that will lead to a more restful sleep for a baby and lead to later waking in the morning.

3. Ensure Baby Takes Naps – The better a baby naps during the day, the better she will sleep at night because she is less likely to be overtired at bedtime. A good nap lasts at least one hour and is in a quiet, sedentary location, versus in a stroller, swing or car, which is not nearly as restorative. Shorter, more frequent naps are common during baby’s first 6 months. If your baby is in daycare, parents may need to work with their daycare providers to establish a baby sleep routine  and techniques to enable the baby or toddler to nap longer.

4. Avoid Sleep Associations – Babies, like all humans, have natural sleep cycles, which are periodic awakenings throughout the night. Often baby sleep techniques for new parents will involve a soothing device or action, like a pacifier, bottle, nursing, or rocking, which baby cannot replicate on his own when he awakens between sleep cycles. When baby cannot go back to sleep, he will likely cry out for Mom or Dad to help him. Baby sleep associations are often at the root of so many baby sleep problems. This is why it’s important for parents to put the baby into his bed awake, so that he falls asleep on his own and will be able to put himself back to sleep during the night.

5. Manage Baby Night Feedings – Through the first nine months, it is considered normal for babies to eat one or two times overnight. Some stop much sooner on their own accord or with just a little nudge from mom. If a baby is eating more frequently than that or she is older than nine months, Mom may want to consider cutting back (or cutting out) night feedings. All babies are different and experts disagree as to when feeding baby at night should stop. A mom knows her baby best and will be best able to determine whether she still needs to eat at night, but any more than two feedings after three months old and she probably has a sleep association with nursing or the bottle.

Everyone’s situation is unique and that what works for one family may not work for another. It takes courage and dedication to work through your baby’s sleep issues, but the time spent on teaching your baby healthy sleep habits will be worth it.

Why Baby Wakes Up Crying

One of the most common baby sleep questions from parents is why baby wakes up from sleep crying. Babies can typically wake up crying when they are hungry, because they are wet or dirty, or to have their sleep association recreated (such as replacing a pacifier), but this article is to discuss what it possibly means when your baby wakes up crying from a nap or in the morning when it seems like they are “done sleeping.”

Current information and research reflects that there does not seem to be any definitive reason as to why babies cry when they wake up, but we do know it is normal for them to cry between sleep cycles. In the majority of cases, when a baby wakes up crying, it means he is not done sleeping. Sometimes a baby may have awakened in between sleep cycles and had trouble getting back to sleep for the next sleep cycle. Some babies have a much easier time going into the next sleep cycle and may just whimper a bit between sleep cycles.

Often, it is best if you not to run in at the slightest whimper because crying between sleep cycles is normal and expected. Babies might not do it every sleep cycle, but they do some. You do not need to allow your baby to cry-it-out, but for most parents any amount of crying feels a lot longer than it is. Many parents inadvertently find out that their baby just needed some time to resettle themselves when they cannot get to baby right away and when they do enter baby’s room after a minute or two of crying, they find that baby has gone back to sleep. This is a prime indication that had the parent entered the room any earlier then they would have disturbed their baby’s nap or sleep cycle.

Allow yourself the time to get to know and understand your child’s sleep cycles, baby’s schedule and waking patterns. For many babies when they wake up crying, it means they are not done sleeping. However, there are some babies who will wake up crying as part of their normal wake up routine. Until you have worked towards nap or sleep training your baby, to help your baby sleep through the night, try giving baby three to five minutes to resettle back to sleep without your help. Not only does this help baby to get the amount of sleep he needs but it helps him learn how to fall back asleep without creating a sleep association habit.

Tips For Letting Your Baby Sleep Better

Many parents find that one of the most challenging aspects of having a child under the age of two years old is getting them to sleep and stay asleep. Many babies wake up at inconvenient times and cause parents to have less sleep and lower quality sleep.

One way to start getting your baby to sleep better is by setting a specific time for you to get up as a family. If your baby gets up before this time, even if it’s just a half hour ahead, send him or her back to sleep. This will get your baby used to certain hours of the day. When your baby has woken up, show him the sunlight outside. This will help his body get used to the hours that he should be awake and hours that he should be asleep. It will awaken his biological clock, which is controlled by the reaction of the brain to light.

Babies always need to take naps, but they should not take them too early or a few hours after waking up. If they do this, move the nap by a few minutes every day until it is a half hour later. This way, they can get used to sleeping more at night and not relying so much on naps during the day. Make sure that your baby gets the right amount of sleep for his age. Babies under one year should get two to three naps a day. At two years old, they should only have one or two naps every day. If your baby takes more than the regular number of naps, start making the naps later in the day until they eventually decrease.

Fresh Air And Your Baby

Did you know that fresh air is just as important and necessary for the baby as for the adult? During the early weeks of life, the air baby breathes must be warm but, it must be warmed fresh air. Your baby requires fresh air just as much as he needs pure food.

 

During the early days, say after the third week, baby should be well wrapped up with blankets and hood, tucked snugly in his basinet or stroller, while the windows are opened wide and your little one is permitted to enjoy a good airing. Even in the winter months the windows may be raised in this way for a few minutes each day. These “airings” may be for few minutes at first, and, as your child grows older, they may be gradually increased to few hours daily. The stroller or basket should stand near the window, but not in a direct draft. At six weeks, perhaps an hour a day in the fresh air is sufficient; while at six months, four to six hours a day are healthy.

A young baby may enjoy the fresh air in his stroller or crib on the porch, on the roof under suitable awnings, in the yard or under the trees. In fact, at proper age and in season, your child may spend some of his time out of doors in the fresh air, if he has proper protection from the sun, wind, cold and insects. As long as he is snug under warm blankets and that his finger tips are warm, you may know he is warm all over, and a long nap is therefore enjoyed in the cool fresh air. Parents you do have to be cautious under certain weather conditions as per:

1. When the weather is very hot, take him out only in the early morning and late in the afternoon.

2. In extremely cold, below zero weather, let his airing be indoors close to a window as per example.

3. Sharp and cold winds may be uncomfortable to baby’s ears, his little nose and eyes. In the case of dust or sand storms, keep your baby in the house.

4. Children enjoy the rain. In the case of baby’s outing on rainy days, ample roof protection is the only factor to be considered; if it is adequate, then take him out; if it is lacking, let the airing be done indoors.

It has been long thought that sunlight and fresh air is in some way healthier than indoor or air conditioned air. You can even see this yourself that during the winter months when we are more indoor, respiratory illness especially colds and flu’s are much more prevalent

 

So what can you do to help improve your babies’ health?

- First and foremost make sure that the nursery is well ventilated and situated to allow a free supply of both air and sunlight into the room.

- Taking them outside, for a walk in the stroller or simply sitting with them outside under a tree (weather permitting) can also be very beneficial.

- Provide your baby of lot of sunlight as well.

 

A study has found that babies sleep longer when exposed to plenty of light in the afternoon, a time when many mothers used to put babies in the garden in their prams or take them to a park.

“One possible explanation for the link between light exposure and sleep is that higher light levels encourage the early development of the biological clock, which regulates a number of bodily functions, including the secretion of melatonin, an important factor in well-balanced sleeping patterns,” said Dr Harrison (study published in the Journal of Sleep Research).

Studies found that babies who slept well at night were exposed to twice as much light between the hours of midday and 4pm as the poor sleepers.

Both appetite and sleep are improved by fresh air and light exposure. The digestion is better, the cheeks become pink, and healthy signs are seen in the child who is privileged to breathe fresh air and sunlight.
