Is my Dropside Cot safe?

Author: Louise Guinda

The recall of over 9 million dropside cots in the US has led many UK parents to question the safety of their cot. Now one UK manufacturer, Cosatto, has recalled one batch of its Paris Cot and has issued a repair kit for another model, the Stratford Cot Bed.

The CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission) of the USA has proposed that they should be banned from sale in the US and removed from all hotels and nurseries. This ban is very likely to be passed by Congress by the end of the year. The CPSC had received reports of 32 infant and toddler suffocation and strangulation deaths and hundreds of incidents caused by or related to drop-side detachments in cots by various manufacturers

So why are they considered more dangerous?  According to the CPSC, “dropside cribs generally have a tendency to be less structurally sound than cribs with four fixed sides.”

Dropsides can be a godsend for shorter parents who struggle to lift their baby out of the cot. However, it would be sensible to take the following precautions as recommended by the CPSC:

* Every time you change the sheets, check that all visible hardware – every bolt, screw, track and clamp – is securely in place.

* Make sure the drop-side is on its track and functions well.

* With the mattress out of the cot, wiggle all the cot to see how tight all the joints are.

* If the cot remains wobbly after tightening all hardware, look for loose wood-to-wood joints that may be causing the problem.

* Stop using the cot if loose wood-to-wood joints are found or if you cannot fully tighten any screw.

The CPSC also warns that cots older than 10 years old should not be used or any broken or modified cots.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How many safety innovations for the NASCAR Cot and racing will ever make it to the public?
Safety barriers, side panel foam inserts, gas tank inserts, fire extinguishers, brake and suspension items, etc. They show them during every race. They have all sorts of things to help protect the driver, do you think these things will ever be put in the general public’s cars. Yes, it know that they are expensive. It is now and always will be.

    • ANSWER:
some of them have already been used in production cars, the brakes for example,,foam inserts in the sides of cars,(airbags) they just adapt to what is the best application to be used in full production lines, and no we’ll never see all the stuff that is used in the nascars,we don’t run 190 and turn left all the time.
if only the newest fans could go back and see what they raced with in the 50′s&60′s then they would see just how much this sport has changed
some for the better and some for putting on a good show.
true nascar fans will agree that today’s so called racing isn’t nothing but a show, kinda like
WWE but with cars,oh i long for the good ol days

  2. QUESTION:
Cot safety for a moving baby??
My 7 week old daughter moves around a lot in her cot. She does not roll yet but somehow manages to move from a vertical position to a completely horizontal position in her cot. So in doing that she always ends up right against the bottom end of her cot and quite often hits her head on the bars or end of the cot.

Are there any good products or ideas that may make the cot a bit softer. I don’t want to use a bumper for SIDS reasons.

I have tried putting an anti roll thing on either side of her but she just moves that with her.

    • ANSWER:
My son would rotate in his crib as well. There isn’t really much you can do to stop her though. Chances are being up against the bars doesn’t bother her. One option is to just let her be.

Of course, you wouldn’t ask this if you were comfortable with that. Another option could be to get a mesh type bumper for the crib. They allow airflow yet protect as well. http://www.inventiveparent.com/cgi-bin/shopper.cgi?preadd=action&key=SLEPBRBP
It sounds like she is just an active baby. Good luck with what ever you decide.

  3. QUESTION:
i have lost my safety clips off my cot do u know where i can get two?
i have lost my safety clips off my cot its too good to throw out and want to use it again can u help

    • ANSWER:
Try a camping shop, they usually carry all sorts of clips and hooks etc. Look for a big one that do caravan and trailer as well, you will have more choice

  4. QUESTION:
Safety rail for cot bed, which is suitable?
I have recently taken the sides off my sons Cot bed and require a safety rail to stop him falling out whilst he gets used to the change. I bought a ‘Summer’ bed rail that said suitable for 18month – 5 years only when i read the instructions more in depth i found it was only suitable for divan beds!! (quite how many youngsters sleep in divan beds is a question that baffles me!!) anyway i have googled bed rails and am struggling to find one that is specifically for cot beds/junior bed (the bed also has lats if this makes any difference).

Can anyone recommed a specific bed rail or brand?

    Thanks in advance

    • ANSWER:
I had the same problem with my son’s bed. In the end, we got a Lindam Safe and Secure rail, and that was suitable for slatted bed frames.

  5. QUESTION:
Can you carry a baby in a car in a carry cot?
I have read somewhere that providing you have the appropriate safety harness for the cot you can put a baby in a carry cot in a car. I can’t remember where I read this. Is this right and does anyone know where I can find further info and the appropriate harness?

    • ANSWER:
You can put the baby in a car seat and then put the seatbelt over it. This is the safest procedure for a baby.

  6. QUESTION:
did the S.A.F.E.R. barriers and the safety of the COT do it’s job today in what it’s all suppose to do
in case you missed it, or haven’t seen it, here it is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI96AKMswLM . what can Nascar and their drivers learn from what happen today so they don’t end up like this?
p.s. to say Nascar drivers are not athletes, were not driving Michael McDowell’s car today.

    • ANSWER:
The situation speaks for itself. The thing that you saw “is” the reason why they built the COT and safer barrier. Your seeing what they saw all along during the evolution of NASCAR Racing. The problem has already been solved. Thats’ why they built the safer barrier. That’s why they designed the COT. This is the question that was posed in the past , so we could see drivers not get seriously injured in crashes like that. The learning has already been done, what your witnessing is the application.

  7. QUESTION:
my son can climb out of his cot now. should i put him in a bed?
He only turned 1 in february though. I was thinking of putting him in a bed with safety guards either side. This would be much safer than him falling from his cot. I just don’t know if he’s to young.

    • ANSWER:
you could try taking one side of his cot that way he wont be too far off the floor if he falls out and will get used to that and stay on his bed also he will still have the comfort of being in his cot as at that age they are still very small, if you feel comfortable putting him in a bed though go for it no-one can tell you whats best for your child just give you some extra options!
      take care and good luck!x

  8. QUESTION:
My 13month old boy keeps getting his thighs stuck between the wooden rails of his cot..?
i put him down for his sleep and he wriggles around abit until he falls asleep. The past few days he has been getting his legs stuck between the rails in the cot and cant move and he cries. Is there anything i can do to prevent it? He seems to do it heaps lately and it scares me that he will really hurt himself. It is a brand new cot with all safety regulations so this really shouldnt be happening..
A Crib is called a COT here in Australia if you didnt know.
We cant really do the sleeping bag thing because it just gets too hot overnight here at the moment, we are entering summer soon over here.
I dont have those padded bumper things, i have heard of them but nobody really uses them over here so i dont know if they actually sell them. As for moving him into a big bed, thats what i was thinking. But i really think that hes just too little for a big bed just yet. He can walk and has been since he was 11months, but he still has a bit of a muck around in his cot before he falls to sleep so hed probably be running around in his bedroom playing with all his toys and never sleep! haha.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi, this sounds tricky.

Don’t hunt for a bumper. They are too soft and your son is probably pulling himself up to a stand by now—if not starting to walk. If he puts his foot on the bumper it will not support his weight. It will crush under his foot, he will lose his balance and the foot and leg might slip through the space—hard.

Call your local pediatric hospital. I know this sounds silly but they have lots of kids come through and they use up to date beds. This must have happened before. Tell them you have questions about crib safety—sorry cot safety—and they can connect you with someone. If that person doesn’t know and they are good at their job they will start helping you search for answers.

Also call the manufacturer of your cot and tell them what the problem is and see if they sell/make anything.

Is there one spot where he gets stuck all the time? You could find out the spacing the crib is supposed to have and measure the space to make sure its correct. Nothing is perfect and sometimes manufacturers make mistakes—that’s why they have recalls.

Also check and see if the crib was recalled for this reason. A few years ago my oldest son’s car seat was recalled two years after he stopped using it!

Good luck and best wishes. Until you find a solution you might want to keep some vegetable oil handy near his room in case you have to make his leg slippery to get it back through.

The DaVinci Baby Crib JPMA Certification Process

Author: Mickey Pro

The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA) offers certification of products which meet the requirements published by ASTM International (formerly the American Society for Testing and Materials).  ASTM is a non-profit organization with a reputation for the requirements it publishes for materials, solutions and services.  These requirements are what the JPMA use to determine if a product qualifies for official certifications or if it does not qualify.  For a item to be JPMA certified, what it signifies is that the item meets the set standard and is safety compliant.

JPMA certification is provided according to categories and the producer’s item must fall into an available category or that item cannot go through the certification approach.  Most furniture items may not have the JPMA certification due to the fact a category has not been designed for them.

DaVinci baby cribs that are JPMA certified went through an official testing carried out by the formal certification laboratory to check for the voluntary standards that are formulated and published by ASTM International.  These standards are designed and revised by committees with ASTM, and these are made up of manufacturers, customer teams, and representation from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (UPSC) and other involved parties.  The procedure in itself was rigorous and thorough, but the road to certification for DaVinci cribs did not end with just testing.

Even though DaVinci baby cribs are JPMA certified, 25% of all their models get tested each quarter.  The objective is that all their designs are tested at least the bare minimum once every year.  The standard of the DaVinci crib is consistently being monitored and tested by the manufacturers to ensure that every time, the DaVinci baby crib meets the best achievable standard.

Random retail testing is also performed on DaVinci baby cribs on a quarterly basis and these tests are all to ASTM standards.  All cribs that have gone through this approach have a certification seal provided by JPMA.

DaVinci cribs which have this seal are the DaVinci Harmony 3 in 1 Convertible Crib, the DaVinci Anastasia 3 in 1 convertible, the DaVinci Alpha 3 in 1 Convertible Crib, the DaVinci Charleston 4 in 1 Convertible Crib, the DaVinci Jamie 4 in 1 Convertible Crib and the DaVinci Jenny Lind 3 in 1 Convertible Crib, just to name a few.

  2. QUESTION:
Can you recommend a really large indoor play yard or gate product for a crawling baby?
Our baby started crawling so we want to put him in a play area inside the house (living room) so he can’t get into stuff. Something like this, http://store.babycenter.com/product/safety+-+baby+care/safety/gates/superyard+xt.do?asc=false, but much bigger (so he has plenty of room to roam, play, and explore), and hopefully nicer-looking. I’d prefer something with mesh instead of bars. Also something free-standing like the one in the picture above; nothing that requires construction or drilling holes into a wall, please. Can someone please recommend a product? A make and model name and number would be great, a link would be even better. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
I had the super yard, it works to an extent, but your child will soom be hanging on to the edge and whining unless you are sitting in there with him. I suggest that you are better off biting the bullet and gating off the entrances to the entire living room or play area and baby proofing it now… Good luck!

  3. QUESTION:
I need to buy max-cosi (baby safety products) in Groningen. Can you give me adresses, I don’t speak Dutch.?
    Maxi-Cosi products
    Maxi cosi baby safety products

    • ANSWER:
The easiest (although not necessarily the cheapest!) is to go to your local branch of Prenatal. They have branches in many towns and most cities. Then there are also larger stores as well which are excellent and well stocked. My local warehouse stock is Aalsmeer and I spent many an hour there when my two were a bit younger (now they are 1 and 3 years old so I don’t go so often)

Anyway you are in luck! In Groningen there is a in-town branch and a warehouse branch as well. http://www.prenetal.nl/Filiaalwijzer
Here is the address and opening times for the in-town one http://www.prenatal.nl/Winkels/ShopDetails.aspx?storeID=29 and here for the warehouse http://www.prenetal.nl/Winkels/ShopDetails.aspx?storeID=78 Like I said, go to the larger one if you can as it will be much better stocked with products

They also have an online shop http://www.prenatal.nl/Shop_Homepage but of course this is in Dutch

Otherwise I also used Baby Dump in comparison for things like car seats, buggies etc although they do not have a branch in Groningen but only in – Grou (FRIESLAND) and Zwinderen (GRONINGEN-DRENTHE) http://www.baby-dump.nl/index.php?page=ves

So checking the NL website of Maxi Cosi then there is a page where you can type in your postcode or city and it brings up all the stockists in the area.
      - Go to http://www.maxi-cosi.com/maxicosi/dealers.aspx
      - On the right-hand side in the field next to “of Plaats” (or Place) type in “Groningen”.
      - Press “zoek” (search) and all the shops will come up with the addresses, map and websites if applicable

If you are still stuck then feel free to Email me (click on my profile and you need to enable your Email option on your profile as well if you haven’t already done so)

If you are looking for second hand (and there are a lot of second hand items because it is a common brand here) then you can look on Marktplaats, but it is completely in Dutch though….. http://www.marktplaats.nl/

EDIT – do take care with lists from the yellow pages as there are no guarantees that all the stores stock Maxi Cosi stuff e.g. Wijsneus doesn’t.

  7. QUESTION:
Which brand is the best to use for baby safety?
I’m trying to stop my little one from opening doors, and drawers. I have the brand safety first, using their cabinet
& drawer latches, and the ones with the tension release strap, but i find the sticky stuff holding them in place, just fails…everytime. I sick of wasting money on a product that doesn’t work. What can I use to stop my child opening drawers, cupboards, shower doors……if you know something that definately works let me know..

    • ANSWER:
I believe I have the same kind of cabinet locks and you are supposed to screw them in. The adhesive tape on them is so they stay in place while you screw them into the cabinet.

If you have cabinet doors with the handle together, I suggest just getting the slide locks. They had them that looked like a U shape and you just slid the end on and then pushed buttons on the top and bottom to slide them off. I cant find them anymore though :( BUT now they have these ones that look like a diamond and 2 zip tie looking things that you loop through the center diamond piece… they are mommy proof too though LOL! I bought both of these at walmart.

For the doors, they have door knob covers at walmart too. OR you can buy a gate and not let him or her in the kitchen and close the bathroom door…

  8. QUESTION:
where do you find reviews on the safety of car seats and other baby products?

    • ANSWER:
Hi! Here is a link to Consumer Reports Infant car seat products.. you don’t need to be a member for this part

      http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/baby-toddler/car-seats/infant-car-seat-ratings/ratings-overview.htm

For other baby products, I google the name of the product + safety test.

Also, check the reviews on Amazon, Target, Babies R Us… they aren’t “official” but they’ll give you a good idea about how the product functions and if other moms like it.

The Safety Of Crib Baby Bumpers And Baby Crib Furniture

Author: Ryan Dube

A very common safety concern when parents consider how to set up their baby crib furniture bedding is whether or not to use crib baby bumpers.

When it comes to this style of bedding for baby crib furniture, a 2005 study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding crib baby bumpers found that over 20 years, from 1985 to 2005, twenty-seven children aged one month to two years suffocated or were strangled by crib baby bumper pads or bumper pad ties. Aside from deaths, the study also found that there were a total of twenty-five injuries caused by bumpers or their ties.

What the study doesn’t make clear are the circumstances of those injuries or deaths caused by crib baby bumpers, and whether they might have been related to how the child was positioned for sleep, their general strength or whether they suffered from underlying medical conditions. Considering that twenty seven deaths over twenty years indicates one or two incidents a year, the possibility that other factors could have been involved in these cases is strong.

Most parents today now understand that there are many safety concerns regarding older baby crib furniture, such as slots that are too large and might allow the baby’s head to slip through, resulting in serious injury or death. However, when it comes to finding bedding for baby crib furniture, the safety concerns of the “professionals” sometimes seem a bit overboard. Newer baby crib furniture is manufactured with ultimate safety in mind, with slots that are now too small for a baby’s head to pass through.

The study, which analyzed three U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission databases for deaths related to crib bumper and crib-related injuries from 1985 to 2005, found that 27 children from 1 month to 2 years old died from suffocation or strangulation related to bumper pads or their ties. The study also found 25 nonfatal injuries attributed to bumpers. Crib baby bumpers also come in styles that have certain features with safety in mind as well. Most have ties that are on the outside of the crib that get tied onto the baby crib furniture post, and the only case where you wouldn’t want to use a crib baby bumper is where the child is so frail and weak that they can not even roll themselves around inside the crib. New parents have enough to worry about, and crib baby bumper safety should not be one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

    • ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

  2. QUESTION:
    Baby safety?
My baby is 8 months old. She rolls over, seats up on her own also. In the morning she wakes up and just rolls over and sometimes cries. I thought if i can put little stuffed animals in her bed, so when she wakes up she can play with them;instead of her getting bored and crying for me to pick her up, eventhou she is feed and clean. Is that safe??

    • ANSWER:
I think at 8 months old that would be ok. I’d make sure they are not big stuffed animals though. Smaller/medium sized ones that don’t cover her face. Or does she have a favorite rattle or something hard like that?

  3. QUESTION:
Can i put my 6 month baby in a jr bed with an extra safety guard?
    please help

    • ANSWER:
Im sure that you could but from having a 7 month old I wouldn’t because it doesn’t seem as safe as the crib and what if the baby rolled and somehow got stuck and suffocated?

  4. QUESTION:
Safety tips for baby while staying w/dog owner for the holidays?
We will be staying with a family member for three weeks over the end-of-year holidays. We have a 6-month-old baby who will (of course) be with us. Recently this family member has demonstrated irresponsible dog-owning behavior, which resulted in a family friend being “nipped” at a party. I have spoken with this individual and communicated my concerns. What else can we do to help ensure everyone’s safety? The baby is not yet mobile (i.e. not yet crawling or walking).

    • ANSWER:
Wow, do what you can to get out of the visit. Nice as dogs are, this dog has already demonstrated what he can do.
If you have to go, make sure you don’t leave the baby’s side for a second as long as the dog is around.

  5. QUESTION:

I am planning to start swimming with my 6 mons baby in the sea with me. I need your kind assistance and experience to tell me what do I need to prepare for her, what are the safety stuff…..etc.

    Thanks a bunch

Never go alone with her. Always have another adult, at least on the beach if not in the water with you. Don’t go out too far and don’t take her in if she’s been fed within the last hour.

  7. QUESTION:
looking for a chair for baby of 9 months with safety straps.Only the one he has at the moment tilts forward?
he keeps trying to stand up in his chair, and actually went completely forward the other day, luckily I was in the room with him when it happen. although he did hit his face on the floor but nothing too serious, but could of been. I have been looking everywhere for a baby chair from 9 months upwards with safety straps as he is not walking yet,and not sturdy enough to balance himself. The chair he has at the moment is for birth to infant FP.Can anyone help

    • ANSWER:
If you’re talking highchairs, Peg Perego is great. If you’re talking a bouncy chair, which I think you are. Kids shouldn’t be in one after they learn to sit, it’s dangerous. Try putting him in his excersaucer, or if he doesn’t have one, that would be a good investment. Otherwise, put him in a play yard where he can’t escape from, but can move around safely

  8. QUESTION:
Where can I find a baby safety helmet?

Keeping children safe is the prime consideration in every parent’s mind. This is why choosing the right products like safe and trusted stair gates needs to be done with care. Just because something is being marketed for children does not mean that it is safe and dependable. Parents should know that there are some tips to keep in mind to make selections of safety stair gates and other child protection devices an easy and worry free process.

a€¢ Choose stair gates that have a certification from JPMA or CPSC

a€¢ Select stair gates made from sturdy material with secure latch fittings

a€¢ Make certain that the stair gates are appropriate for the area where they are to be used. Some of these safety stair gates are only appropriate for use at the bottom of a staircase

a€¢ Choose a mounting system that is easy to install and will work on the walls of your home

Certifications

Having a certification seal from JPMA or CPSC is considered a gold standard for any products designed to be used by children. This certification ensures that parents are choosing an item that has met or exceeded every manufacturing guideline that promotes safety. JPMA is one of the largest groups that monitor whether or not children’s products meet the required safety standards. ASTM is the organization that lists all of the safety features and quality standards for products being prepared for market. JPMA is a separate product authority that works with ASTM and the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to develop and maintain the highest level of standards and quality for the juvenile marketplace. When you notice the JPMA certification seal of approval you are assured that the product you purchase has been tested both during and after the manufacturing process. JPMA will only approve juvenile products like child stair gates after these items have met the most stringent criteria standards.

Material Strength and Mounting Systems

When choosing safety stair gates parents should always select those that are made from sturdy, dependable material. Cheaper items are readily available and these are constructed from flimsy plastics or cheap wood. These types of safety gates will not hold up under the weight of a determined small child and can result in a serious accident. The mounting systems must also be made from material that will be secure once installed. Hardware consisting of metal mounts is ideal and this type of setting can hold firm against the push and weight of small children who are trying to get through the safety barrier.

Aesthetic Appeal

It is only reasonable that parents would want safety features that have a certain aesthetic quality. You can find a number of different styles of child safety gates that block access to dangerous areas like open doors, kitchens and stairs. Many of these childproof gates have colors and designs that will let them blend into any type of dA©cor. Parents need to make certain they are not sacrificing any safety features when they select one of the more aesthetically pleasing gates.

Our Children Deserve the Best

A child’s safety is not something to jeopardize with an improperly chosen safety item. You want the best for your children and this means selecting safe and trusted stair gates that will prevent an unfortunate accident. Parents should always choose child gates that are made of high quality material, have a certification seal from JPMA or CPSC, and have a strong, durable mounting system. This will give your home the child friendly safety features that you can trust.

    • ANSWER:
Even if we here in Yahoo!Answersland were qualified veterinary professionals, we are sadly too far away to conduct an examination of your cat’s injury. Tragically, we were all born with the handicap of not having x-ray vision. Therefore we cannot tell you what type of injury your cat has. That is to say, any yahoo can burble out a diagnosis, but he or she will be talking out of his or her hat. In fact, please take any specific answer as a sign that the respondent has more hot air than is helpful. I know visits to the veterinarian are spendy, and no one wants to throw a bunch of money at a minor injury that would clear up in a few days.

But the truth is, to get your answer, you need to consult with your veterinarian. If it were not the weekend, you could easily call the office and describe the symptoms, and discuss with your vet. and/or the staff there whether or not your cat needs to be seen immediately or if it OK to wait and watch for further symptoms. One of the things you would need to discuss if it was decided that you could take the wait and watch approach, is the signs of pain in cats. Cats can be extremely skillful at hiding their pain, and so it shows in subtle ways, such as changes in mood, activity level and appetite, requiring the cat owner to practice careful observation in order to detect those signs.

But it is the weekend, so now you get the fun of trying to figure out if the injury is serious enough to warrant a visit to an emergency veterinary clinic or having your regular vet. paged. At a guess, I would say it probably can wait until Monday, but here is a website that has a handy checklist of symptoms that indicate true emergency conditions requiring immediate care: http://www.cathelp-online.com/emergency/symptoms.php To help you assess the situation for yourself.

  8. QUESTION:
hi mummies can anyone help me with stair gates?
my fiance, daughter and i are soon to move into our own unit! yay. we need to purchase 2 stair gates (one for top one for bottom) can anyone recommend a good brand, do you have any links? we live in australia.
safety is always always first but seeing as i am buying two i would like to pay a decent price.
thank you all so much =)

    • ANSWER:
Hiya I’m not sure of makes of stairgates but just wanted to advise you to buy the fixed ones that you screw into the wall if it is for the top of the stairs, as no matter how much you tighten the pressure fix ones they still may slip if your little one is leaning against it.

Safe Baby Toys – Relax While Your Baby Plays

You just can’t buy any kind of toys for your baby because it not only provide enjoyment to your little one, but also helps in mental development. Nowadays, a lot of options are available in the market. But the most important thing is to pick a toy which is safe and equally entertaining for your baby. Purchasing toys will keep your little one occupied while you finish the various tasks around the house.

You can go for safe baby toys like soft cuddly dolls, big building blocks with smooth surfaces, and soft balls. Your baby would love to play with simple building blocks and will make pyramids and buildings. Here are some important points you need to keep in mind before you make a purchase:

You need to keep product recalls in mind before buying: Before you purchase it is important for you to check if that particular brand has any recall in the past or not. You can find this information on the Internet itself. It is important to buy from a brand that has no bad history because your baby deserves the best.

Check the safety statements from the manufacturers: You should check out the details of published safety statements from the manufacturers before you buy a toy. Reputable online toy retailers will post manufacturer statements in their website like quality testing, lead content, and other safety details.

You need to buy age-appropriate toys: Before you make a purchase make it sure that it is appropriate for your baby’s age. If you buy toys for slightly older babies it might contain lose parts which might choke your baby if he puts it in his mouth.

Baby Gear Safety Tips

<!– @page { margin: 0.79in } P { margin-bottom: 0.08in } A:link { color: #0000ff } –>

We always want what’s best for our children. When it comes to our little ones, safety and security are the top priorities, and this is especially true when choosing baby gear. With the number of product recalls lately due to safety concerns, it is vital for parents to be discriminating when buying equipment for their children.

Just recently, the unfortunate death of a six-month-old baby quickly prompted the recall of over 600,000 cribs, which had drop-sides that easily detached, creating a space where a child could become trapped and suffocate. It is important that you know which baby equipment is secure and stable before making any purchases. This also applies to relatives and friends who are thinking of buying baby gifts for their loved ones.

You can protect your child from such dangers by looking for the seal of approval from the Consumer Product Safety Commission and examining the baby gear carefully for safety hazards. Here are a few tips help survey the most common baby equipment—cribs, high chairs, strollers, clothes and hair accessories.

In general, for any baby gear, simply run your fingers along it to feel for rough spaces or surfaces that may get dangerously hot if exposed to the sun. You will want to avoid these. Also, inspect hinges, springs, and all moving parts. There should be no place where your baby’s body parts or clothes can get caught in or pinched. Everything must be fastened securely. All paints and finishes must be smooth and non-toxic.

Rock-a-bye Baby

For cribs, the mattress should fit snugly. Try putting two fingers between the mattress and the side of the crib—if they fit, your baby’s head could get wedged in that space. Your baby’s head could get caught between the slats, too, so they should be less than 2 3/8 inches apart. Hinges and screws should be secure and away from your baby’s reach.

During the first few months, your baby will not be strong enough to lift her own head high, and there can be danger of suffocation when lying facedown. Therefore, avoid using pillows or blankets that bunch up easily.

High Rollers

High chairs and strollers are prone to tipping over, so they should have a wide base that keeps them steady. They should also have good harnesses that you can fasten firmly, so that she is safe and snug and won’t fall or climb out easily. As most high chairs and strollers are foldable, make sure that the mechanisms that lock the hinges in place while in use are secure. Examine the stroller wheels as well. They should be solid and come with shock absorbers.

Little Fashionista

When dressing up your little one, it’s not just safety that comes into play. It’s also important to factor in comfort. Remember that babies skin is sensitive, so her clothes should not contain elements that might irritate her. Wash her clothes separately from the rest of your laundry for the first few months, using mild soap or detergent, and then double-rinse them. Avoid using fabric softeners, since these may contain chemicals that can irritate your baby’s skin.

As for safety, baby clothes often have tiny decorative features that might easily get pulled out. Check small items on the clothing, like buttons and ribbons. They should be fastened securely; otherwise, they can become choking hazards to your little one.

Baby Clippys

What little princess is complete without hair accessories? You have to be careful here too, because some of the clips on the market are so small that they can be choking hazards. Most children under the age of three have fine, wispy hair and some hair products can slip off their hair easily. If a clip ends up in their mouths, you want to know that they aren’t going to swallow it.

You can also choose hair accessories that have been especially designed to stay in place. Such products work well in fine, wispy hair, and the velvet-covered brand is soft against the scalp. The same goes for headbands—choose one that is non-slip and made from high-quality materials that won’t irritate your baby’s skin.

All in all, choosing baby gear or baby gifts pretty much boils down to being well-informed, and making discriminating, safety-first choices.

During a babies first year of life it will more than likely spend up to about seventy per cent of its time in the small baby crib. The small baby crib is actually one of the biggest investments that you will make prior to the arrival of your new baby. When you are looking to purchase a crib for your baby there is a few things that should be considered when making the decision.

One of the first things that you should bear in mind is the safety of your baby. It is very important to make sure that the crib is safe for your baby. The best to make sure that you get a small baby crib that is safe is to look for a crib that carries the JPMA certification. This certification is a good way to make sure that the crib that you are going to purchase meets the minimum required safety standards. The commission for consumer product safety issues the certification.

It is also a good idea to get a crib that is convenient, as you will more than likely not want to spend a lot of energy lifting the baby into and out of the crib. A good type of baby crib to get the ones that has a drop side on them and also a mattress that has an adjustable height as both of these things will make life a lot easier. Another good thing to look for may be one that is on rolling casters and these will enable you to move the crib with a great deal of ease.

The location where you are planning to let the baby sleep will play a big part in the best style of crib to get. If you are planning to let the baby sleep in the your room you may want to consider one of the smaller styles of crib.
