Maintaining home safety all year round

Author: Isaias Hensley

Steps can be taken to ensure that various components around your home are safe for youngsters. For example, baby walkers can become very dangerous for children, as they can result in children falling down stairs. Ensure that safety gates are installed properly and that the cribs meet current standards for safety. Gates that fasten to walls are ideal for the tops of stairs, while spring-loaded gates are a superior choice for the base of stairs. Next, check various aspects of cribs, such as the mattress, the screws, and the frame. In regards to bathtub safety, keep these tips in mind: A child can drown in just a few centimetres (1 inch) of water, within the duration of seconds! Within seconds, hot water from a faucet can burn a person’s skin. In fact, a child’s skin burns in a quarter of the time required for an adult’s skin to be burned! Before placing your child in the bathtub’s water, use your elbow to test the temperature.  When running a bath for your child, consistently begin and complete the process, with cold water.  If you must leave the bathroom while bathing your child, take your son or daughter long with you. Instruct your child to sit in the bathtub 100% of the time.   While certain components in a house can pose threats to children, remember that child safety products from a child safety store can help to secure their safety.  Be careful about what your child puts in his or her mouth. To prevent your child from choking and strangling on objects, remember that if a child can fit an object in his or her mouth, your child could choke on it. Therefore, keep all tiny objects out of reach of infants and toddlers. Objects whose consuming pose a threat to young children, include small toy parts, seeds, chips, small candies and nuts, popcorn, wrapping paper, batteries, broken balloons, and hot dogs. To prevent your young children from choking on food, shred or cut foods that is hard and round, into narrow strips. Also, children must always chew their food slowly and sit up while eating meals or snacks. Lastly, as a parent, it is wise to master the indicators of choking and what steps to take when it occurs.

In addition to choking on tiny objects, remember that the majority of homes include 200-300 poisons. Teach children the hazard symbols on containers, so they will realize the danger of consuming such products. Keep items such as cleaners; nail polish; holly and mistletoe; perfume; and cosmetics away from children, as they become poisonous when consumed. Even party leftovers certain medicines, and holiday ornaments can be poisonous to children! Lastly, remember that “child-resistant” caps vary from “child-proof” versions.

They all give info on which chemicals and products to avoid and suggestions on safer alternatives.

I don’t see any problem with requiring testing like that. How would you know whether someone selling a homemade block painted that block with some old paint that happened to contain lead? That is what testing is about and preventing child brain damage is worth the effort.

  8. QUESTION:
Best way to find a reliable Chinese manufacturer?
I’m a London based inventor, who has developed a new home safety product that I’d like to put into production. I’ve received a number of quotes for tooling from the UK, which are way beyond our budget, so I’m considering looking to the Far East.

There seems to be so many options for finding a quality Chinese manufacturer and I’ve heard some horror stories about quality and delivery times. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

    Many thanks

Surely with UK unemployment rising, there are people willing to do the work here? Why export wealth and export jobs?

After your child outgrows his/her rear-facing infant car seat, for both safety and law concerns, your child will still require a seat or booster for a few more years. We all know that buying different seats and boosters can be costly. The Graco Nautilus Lagrange is the last forward-facing car seat you ever need to buy for your child. This wonderful 3 in 1 car seat adapts as your child grows from a toddler to a bigger kid. It easily changes up from a 5-point harness seat, to a belt-positioning booster, and further along into a backless booster for bigger kids. The seat has the ability to hold a child up to 100 pounds.

What’s good about the Graco Nautilus Lagrange?

The most important thing that matters is your child’s safety. No doubt, Graco is one of the most trusted brand names when it comes to car seats. All of their seats exceed US safety standards. The seat keeps your child safe and secure in a 5-point harness that only you can unbuckle. The straps in the 5-point harness don’t get twisted.
Graco designs the car seat with the child’s comfort in mind. The simply adjustable head support, wide armrest, and well-cushioned seat keep your child happy, relaxed, and comfortable. The headrest is easy to use and adjust. It extends way up so that your child can easily sleep comfortably in it without slumping over, like some other car seats.
The storages under both armrest areas are ideal for storing little toys, snacks, tissues, and sunglasses. It has an integrated cup holder that can fit almost any size cup or water bottle. Your kids can easily get their own cups and not have to worry about the cup holder falling or breaking apart.
The Graco Nautilus car seat is solid, and the installation is quite simple. You will be ready to use it in just three simple steps: attach the back onto the seat, slide the headrest on, and pop the armrest onto the seat.
The Nautilus’ cover is easy to take apart and clean. Machine-washing in cold water on the delicate cycle and drip-drying can effortlessly clean it.
It has a long expiration date. The recommended expiration of the Nautilus is 6 years from the date of manufacturing.
The price is cheaper compared to other brands such as Britax. It is not expensive for what you get. It’s worth every cent you pay for the assurance of the safety of your child.

What’s bad about the Graco Nautilus Lagrange?

The seat doesn’t recline as much as other seats, but the headrest makes up for it by keeping the kids’ head upright when sleep.
Although it is a little heavy, it is steel reinforced, and sits better in the car.

Graco Nautilus Lagrange is honestly one of THE BEST car seats that I have ever gotten for my kids. It is safe, secure, sturdy, comfortable, multi-functional, and stylish. It is the perfect seat for children who have outgrown the convertible, but are not yet ready for a belt-positioning booster.

Where to get the best deal on Graco Nautilus?

There are many stores online that sell Graco Nautilus Lagrange car seats. Not many stores run discounts and offer coupons; but a few stores offer guarantees on fast and inexpensive or even free shipping. If you are not happy with your purchase, you even can return it, with free charge.

It will be time-consuming searching online to find the stores that really give you the best deal. It will be helpful if there is someone who knows all about finding discounts and coupons, and see what they have found.

So if you are interested in purchasing the Graco Nautilus at the best deal in a variety of great selections, visit the Graco Deals Blog. It has some great deals listed, and it will save you time and effort to find them yourself.

Due to aging and deterioration of health, the body of an elderly person tends to become frail and weak. Even normal movements of the body get somewhat clumsy. As a result, daily activities like climbing stairs, opening door knobs or using toilets seem to be a daunting task for them. Statistics have found that every year thousands of elderly people who are in the age group of 65 years and above, meet with an accident at home itself. For all these reasons, home safety for the elderly is a must if he or she is spending some time alone at home.

Stairs Safety for the Elderly
One of the most accident prone area of your house is the stairs. Elderly people find it quite difficult to climb them up. Therefore, if possible shift them downstairs, so that their use of stairs is minimum. The stairs should be fitted with railings with both sides so that they can hold on to maintain their body balance. If the stair floors are covered with carpet, then the edges should be taped properly to avoid the chances of tripping due to folded carpet. Do not keep any object on the stairs to ensure that they can move on them freely. Most importantly, there should be sufficient amount of light on the stairs, so that they can see the steps properly.

Bathroom Safety for the Elderly
Another area where special home safety for seniors is needed is the bathroom. Bathroom flooring should be slip resistant. Keep shower grab bars and toilet grab bars that they can hold on to, in order to prevent slips. The bathtub for the elderly has to be cushioned properly, so that even if they fall down, they do not sustain any major injury. Faucets with levers are more convenient for them to use. Keep a single control faucet for both hot and cold water. For those who cannot move around freely, hand-held shower is preferable for them.

Fire Safety for the Elderly
As the mobility of the elderly is restricted, any fire breakout in the home can burn them. Even they cannot tolerate smoke inhalation. For this, proper fire safety measures is a must. The main source of fire breakouts are ovens and stoves when they prepare their meals. In that cases, use of microwave is a much safer option for them. You should install safety devices like smoke detectors and fire alarm systems at home that can warn them about burning food or if the stove is on. Check them once in a month, if they are in good working condition. A fully charged fire extinguishers should also be with their reach. Give them proper training on how to use them. Know more on elderly fire safety.

Basic Home Safety Tips for the Elderly
Here are some basic tips on home safety for older adults, that will help to make life easier for them:

  • To prevent their slipping, the floors should be made slip resistant. They should also wear dry, flat, non-slip shoes in the house.
  • Some elderly have the habit of wandering at night. In that case, secure both the front door and back door with extra locks.
  • Doorknobs are difficult to rotate for people suffering from arthritis. So replace them with levers which are easier to handle.
  • Night lights should be used in their bedroom, bathroom and hallway to improve visibility. The switches of the lights should be illuminated.
  • Those items which are needed during an emergency should be stored in one place, in labeled containers which can be easily accessed by the elderly. These items include first aid kit, toolbox, extra pair of glasses, flashlights, etc. You can also read and know more on needs of the elderly and some other safety tips that you could implement.

Washing the clothes of your baby looks like something simple to do. However, you should notice that you have a lot of details to be noticed in washing baby clothes. Your baby is still very fragile and has greater risk to suffer from any illness, so you really need to think about the sterility as well as the cleanliness of the clothes. Besides, most of baby clothes available in the market are treated with highly toxic and allergenic chemicals. Here are some hints to wash your baby clothes effectively and safely.

What you need to do first is grouping your baby clothes in three different categories: colors, darks, and white or very lights. You should also keep in mind that you should put wools, silks, as well as other fine fabrics in separate groups since they need special treatments in the washing process. You should also wash the three groups of clothes in different loads in order to keep the quality of the fabrics. Once you have finished washing a certain group, you can continue to handle another group.

Then, put the load of the clothes in your machine. Try to avoid loading the clothes in less than the full load since it is not a good choice either environmentally or financially. Then, add some amount of safe baby detergent. It will be better for you to take a product with less fragrance and dyes in order to avoid too much chemical substances. These chemicals might be dangerous for your baby since it is carcinogenic and might trigger allergy.

Now let us treat the clothes based on the group. When you are going to wash dark clothes, you should only use cold water. For the colors groups, you need to use warm water. Meanwhile, lights or whites group might require you to use warm or hot water. The temperature of the water will help you a lot not only to keep the quality of the clothes, but also to easier you clean the dirt and dusts in your baby clothes. Use double rinse feature offered by your machine in order to make sure that the residue of the detergents could be removed well.

Then, the last things you should do is put them in the dryer or simply dry them on line dry or rack. You can dry it under the sunshine, but it is not recommended to do during spring and fall. In those seasons, outdoor air contains a lot of environmental allergens such as pollen and dust. Those contaminants might contaminates your baby clothes and makes your baby suffers from allergy like itchy skin.

Those steps are actually simple to do, but it brings great effect to the health of your baby. Try to apply those steps and your baby will be healthy and has less risk to catch any illness.

Shore Feet’s soft soled shoes are easy to pull on and off and due to the strength of the Neoprene material they can be twisted and flexed without causing any damage to the shoe. Due to this flexibility Shore Feet give the feet the freedom to move and allows them to sit in their natural position, this helps to balance and stabilise the feet as the toes can grip the floor.

The cushioning nature of Neoprene means that these shore shoes provide comfort when walking or crawling and the Neoprene material also means that the shore shoes are waterproof and also fully insulated to prevent the feet from getting cold, especially when in cold water.

The soft soled Shore Feet are loved by parents and children alike due to their practical features and as they’re available in a variety of bright colours they’re great fun to wear.

Protecting Your Baby’s Skin in Winter

Winter conditions such as dry winds, cold temperatures, snow, and rain can be harmful for your baby. It is common for babies and young children to get sick in the winter because of decreasing temperatures and the flu season. The harsh winter weather alone can cause damage to your baby’s skin. Their skin is so sensitive and can become irritated more so than adults’ skin. Cold winter air and dry, heated indoor air can cause irritation and dryness of the skin making eczema flare ups more frequent. Here are some ways to protect your baby’s skin during the winter.

When bathing your baby, be extra cautious of the water temperature. You should always practice safe bathing techniques, not just in the winter. The temperature should be lukewarm, a mixture of hot and cold water. Cold water will making your baby uncomfortable and water that is too hot can dry the skin out more or burn their sensitive skin. Also, use soap made from natural products that aren’t too heavily scented. Unnatural products can contain harsh chemicals that could make a winter rash worse. Moisturizing after bathing is smart because the skin is clean. It is common for babies to suffer from eczema, so using <a title=”eczema oil” target=”_blank” href=”http://www.homesteadcompany.com/”>eczema oil</a> will help to prevent that.

You may be surprised to know that babies can regulate their body temperature just as well as adults can. Don’t dress your baby in too many layers trying to keep them warm. If your baby becomes overheated they may develop an irritating heat rash. Keep your baby warm with jackets and blankets. Dress your baby in material that can breathe a little such as cotton. Dress your baby as you would dress yourself. It is common to add an extra layer of clothing to your outfit to stay warm, but only layer up once.

Adults and babies are often irritated by chapped lips during the winter. It may not seem like your baby’s lips could get chapped because they appear moist from drooling, teething, or having a pacifier. You can use a lip balm on your baby but make sure it isn’t the kind that has a tint of color. Find an organic brand that won’t cause irritation. Using lip balm will add a protective layer that will heal or prevent chapped lips.

To protect your baby’s hands and feet, which are often exposed to the outside elements, you can use gloves and socks. Wearing gloves will protect your baby’s hands from cold winter winds. When skin is exposed to wind, cold air, and other elements, the skin can become very dry. A lot of heat is also lost through the tops of our heads. Find a cute, little beanie or hat for your baby to wear. Unlike adults, some babies don’t have a lot of hair to keep the tops of their heads warm.
