What Parents Need to Know About Infant Car Seat? 2 Useful Tips For Your Baby Safety!

Author: Zac

When you first notice that you are pregnant, you will feel excited and happy about a new member coming to join your family. Your thoughts will probably be taken up with decorating and equipping a nursery, buying clothes, and much more; however, not many people will consider of an infant car seat until later on in the pregnancy. Well, it is critical to know what you are looking for in a seat, because you will need one on your baby ‘ s very first journey which is from hospital back to home.

From the first journey, it is important to know that the car seat must faces towards the rear of your vehicle. The reason is because rear facing provides the best protection in the event of an impact for infants. Since the newborn baby is not be able to support the weight of their own head; therefore,  the seat should nicely reclined backwards in order to provide a safe and comfortable position for your child.

Rear-facing is sturdy, reliable and light to carry around which is the best fitted for the young babies. As we all know that infants sleep most of the time, and we want to make sure the infant car seat could easily detach from the vehicle which prevents you to wake the babies up by removing them from their warm and comfortable seat. Light to carry is also critical for most parents because they could move the child from the vehicle to the house easily with little disturbance.

Most rear facing are only suitable for young infants, because the protection from the rear facing is no longer suitable for infant reached or exceed 20 pounds. Therefore, you need to change the rear facing to forward facing for further safety purposes.

Forward facing seat is more upright and it can be adjusted to provide a better position to help your toddler sleep comfortably and safely during the long journey. Please note that upright position is for children that could sit up on their own and it is usually design for children up to the age of 6.

2 critical remarks that you need to keep in mind:

1. Do not buy second hand infant car seat:  If a car seat involved in an accident in the past, it will become more vulnerable and you will not be able to tell by just looking at it.  The vulnerable could endanger your child even in a very minor accident.  Therefore, try to stay away from the “Second hand” if possible.

2. Infant car seat should not be placed in the front seats where an airbag is fitted.  The reason is because when accident occurs, the inflation of the airbag could cause a serious injury to a child.  Therefore, the seat should always place in the rear of the vehicle.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is there a rating for the safety of a car seat?
I just bought a convertible car seat for my 1 year old. His father and grandmother are afriad that it’s going to “break in half” if we get into a wreck. They said there is some kind of rating system for the safety of all car seats. All I can find is convience ratings and a statement saying that all car seats are safe because they all have to pass the govornments tests. So am I missing something? If I am I will definetly check into it since this is my baby’s safety but I can’t find any safety ratings.
Also, if anyone actually has wrecked in one how did that go? It’s a Cosco Scenera 22197ANQ.

  2. QUESTION:
How to pick a car seat? Convertible or infant to start?
It seems a little silly to purchase two seats in just a few months, but I’m wondering if the infant ones are safer or something?
Also, where can you find the safety ratings for baby gear? I tried consumer reports and apparently you have to pay and subscribe. Surely you don’t have to pay to know the safety of the equipment you need to purchase!!!
Thanks girls, really appreciate any help here! I went looking yesterday and was so confused….
Geez Derek easily offended? I think it’s pretty obvious I wasn’t trying to upset anyone. You’re moodier than me and I’m pregnant, lol!!

    • ANSWER:
The only time an infant bucket seat is safer than a convertible is if baby is on the smaller side (>5 to around 7lbs) Otherwise all seats have to pass the same tests for rear facing, then a different test for forward facing with convertible seats.

  3. QUESTION:
    Forward Facing Car Seat?
We have a little girl that out grew her car seat. She is 9 months and 20 pounds. We found a car seat that has superb safety ratings but it is a forward facing seat. We have heard that infants should be facing the rear until 12 months old. Is facing our baby forward going to put her into danger?? The car seat is for someone her weight……

    • ANSWER:
20 lbs AND 1 yr. is the MINIMUM requirement. If you got pulled over (in Illinois and Wisconsin for sure), not only would you be fined, but DCFS would be contacted and they’d come investigate you due to child endangerment. The best carseat you can get is the Britax Marathon or the Sunshine Kids Radian 80–both can be used rear facing until 35 lbs and forward facing to 65 for the Britax and 80 for the Sunshine Kids.

Rear facing is ALWAYS safest. It’d be safest for adults, too, if it would work! Her neck is not strong enough to sustain her life in the event of a crash. Infant and even toddler necks are not fully developed and the space between vertebrae and the skull is quite large. If her neck snaps forward in a crash, it will separate and she will be internally decapitated. If she’s rear facing, the carseat will absorb the impact of the crash.

Also, if you’re looking at an Evenflo, Graco, Cosco (or Eddie Bauer), or Safety 1st seat, know that these seats are safety tested at 25-30 mph. Britax and Sunshine Kids test their seats at a minimum of 50 mph. Also, when they safety test seats, they use them with the straps on correctly–Evenflo and Cosco seats’ straps twist really easily, which is a major safety hazard, yet it seems unavoidable. Graco and Safety 1st have chest clips that are really easy to unbuckle and they slide up and down the harness really easily, regardless of how tight the harness is on your child. So, just because it’s been given a good safety rating doesn’t mean it has been deemed safe by consumers–know HOW it got the rating–does it pass the minimums or does it exceed them?

  4. QUESTION:
About how old is a 30 lb baby?
    HI guys–

I ended up with two car seats as gifts– the same brand! ha. The thing is, they got GREAT safety ratings and its defintely the brand I want. The thing is, only one of our 2 cars are currently “baby safe”– I drive a Ford Ranger and even though you can turn the airbag off, I dont think I’ll be putting baby in my truck at all.

We’ll be buying a second baby-safe car in mid or late summer. Baby is due this month, so she’ll already be 4+ months old then. The seat is rated for up to 30 lbs.

Should we keep both and plan to use the second one in 4 months or should I return it and get a larger seat when we get the second car? I dont know how hold a 30lb kid is…..

    • ANSWER:
Mty daughter is 2 and weighs 32 pounds, check to see if the car seat has a height requirement as well, some do. You can buy car seats that go from 22 pounds up to 80 pounds, so it is a front facing seat until the child is 40 pounds and then turns into a booster until they are 80 pounds. I’d return the seat and look for one like that.

  5. QUESTION:
Looking for Best Car Seat Travel System that meets my needs?
Hello all! I’m looking for a travel system with the following (I’m hoping it exists!!):

1.) Excellent safety ratings of course
2.) Car seat that adjusts as the baby gets older (up to 40-60 lbs. maybe)
3.) Removable car seat with stroller
4.) Stroller that can also be used without car seat
5.) Ease of use would also be great.

Everything I’m finding so far has most of these options, but not all. Does this exist? Thanks so much!!! Willing to spend up to 0 but open to all options.

  6. QUESTION:
    Best Mommie Vehicle?
I am 15 weeks pregnant and soon my husband and I will need to purchase a new (or used) vehicle. I am interested in one that will last us through the baby stage (car seat facing backwards) and into toddler stage (forward facing car seat).

we prefer a car or small SUV/Van/Wagon that has excellent safety ratings, an easily accessible back seat (for putting babies in and out), affordable, and ALSO gets great gas mileage (a lot to ask!) The problem with our car now is a rear facing baby seat would require the front seats to be pushed all the way up!

I assume by posting this question in the toddler stage of pregnancy, moms and dads will have some good suggestions of what works and doesn’t work for them. SO, if you have a particular car that you like (or hate), please tell me about it. I am very interested in ease of use and gas mileage.

    Thanks for all your help

    • ANSWER:
I drive a 2004 Passat sedan with automatic transmission that I paid k for (brand new). It gets about 25-32 mpg (city/hwy), depending on how I drive (I have a lead foot).

LATCH installs in the backseat are very easy. There are only two sets of LATCH anchors – they’re outboard, and the inner anchors cannot be used to install a carseat with LATCH in the center position. All three seating positions have locking seatbelts, so you can put a seat in any of the three positions. All three seating positions have a top tether.

I have installed the Britax Marathon rear-facing behind the driver seat with LATCH, forward-facing in both outboard positions with LATCH, and it is currently forward-facing in the center position with the seatbelt.

I have installed the Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 forward-facing in the center position. The seat tilted to the side a little because there’s a little bump in the center of the rear seat, but it was in there tight. I had to remove the base on the 3-in-1. And, I could not get it installed as tightly as I would have liked, in either outboard position. Then again, this is not my favorite seat.

I have installed the Evenflo Triumph forward-facing outboard with LATCH. I could not get it in as tightly as I would have liked it to be – my leather seats did not want to grip on to that flat base on the Triumph.

I have installed the Sunshine Kids Radian forward-facing outboard with LATCH. This seat is in our other vehicle so I’ve not had a lot of experience with it in the center, or with the seatbelt.

  7. QUESTION:
    Britax Boulevard convertible car seat?
Does anyone currently own and use a Britax Boulevard convertible car seat? Are you happy with it? Were you able to find safety ratings for it? Consumer Reports doesn’t include it (not sure why). Is it easy to use? Have you used it on a flight? Is it easy to install? Have you used it in the rear-facing position and has your baby comfortable in it in that position? Is a toddler comfortable in it? My baby is almost 6 months old and quite a big baby and he needs to be out of his infant seat. He’s very uncomfortable in it. I’m debating between the Britax Roundabout, Britax Marathon, and Britax Boulevard. Thanks

    • ANSWER:
      Britax Roundabout (*est. 0)
      Best convertible car seat.
While it may seem like an expensive purchase at first glance, the Roundabout is the least expensive Britax car seat. In crash tests and car seat reviews, the Roundabout has proven itself one of the safest car seats on the market, and parents say it is easy to install and to use. The Roundabout can be used in the rear-facing position for babies up to 33 pounds, making it a solid choice for kids who may outgrow other rear-facing seats before they’re one year old. In the front-facing position, the Roundabout is rated for kids up to 40 pounds. This car seat is smaller and less bulky than the Britax Boulevard, but the Boulevard can be used for kids up to 65 pounds, so you’d be able to use it longer.

      Britax Boulevard (*est. 0)
      Best luxury car seat.
While 0 is a lot to spend on a car seat, the Boulevard has a bunch of extra features, such as added EPS foam to protect baby’s head in a side-impact crash. There’s a removable infant pillow so that babies fit more securely in the seat. A belly pad and padded harness also add comfort. Car-seat reviews say the Britax Boulevard is larger and bulkier than many car seats, but unlike other convertible car seats, the Boulevard is rated for kids up to 65 pounds (most seats only accommodate kids up to 40 pounds), so this seat can be used much longer. Though expensive, the Britax Boulevard has almost every feature a parent could want, along with Britax’s excellent record for safety.

      Evenflo Triumph 5 (*est. 0)
      Best value.
This seat doesn’t get the overwhelming praise of Britax car seats in reviews, and experts say it’s not quite as easy to use, but the Evenflo Triumph 5 rates just as well for safety, has plenty of plush padding, and costs a lot less. Car-seat eviews say the front-positioned harness adjustments makes them difficult to access in the rear-facing position, and the tether may only be used forward-facing, unlike the Roundabout and Boulevard car seats. With fewer frills than the Roundabout, the Evenflo is a more economical, yet just as safe choice. It is rated for infants from 5 to 30 pounds while rear-facing, and up to 40 pounds in the front-facing position.

      Graco ComfortSport (*est. )
      Basic convertible car seat.
Car-seat reviews say the ComfortSport is a safe, affordable seat with few frills. The Graco car seat isn’t as comfortable as the Britax car seats, but reviews say it’s a good choice for a second car. This seat doesn’t recline at all, so many parents say it’s not as comfortable for infants. There are several versions of the ComfortSport. Pricier versions have more head padding and removable cup holders, which parents seem to like.

The best car-seat review can be found in Consumer Reports, which conducts in-house crash testing, conducting similar tests to those performed by the federal government. The book Baby Bargains also offers a wealth of information on baby gear. While editors don’t conduct crash testing, they examine every other aspect of the car seats, and also compare their own reviews to that of Consumer Reports, explaining any discrepancies between the two. The Baby Bargains Web site contains updates to the information provided in the book.

The third and final site that is top-marked in our review section is the official site of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), which offers a comprehensive ease-of-use rating system. This system assigns each seat a grade of “A,” “B” or “C” to a variety of aspects regarding the car-seat, including ease of installation and the complexity of the instructions. While this is helpful, it’s not nearly as comprehensive as the car-seat reviews found in Consumer Reports and Baby Bargains.

Convertible seats serve a few purposes. First, they are an alternative for those that do not wish to buy three car seats, since they can generally hold an infant from birth until the child has reached 40 pounds (or as high as 65 pounds for some convertible car seats). Most experts say that a child should be in a dedicated infant car seat for the first year due to the recline of the seat and the fact that most infant seats can be taken out of the car without waking the baby, causing less stress for new parents.

The second and generally intended purpose of convertible car seats is to hold children who are too large for an infant car seat, yet still under a year and need to be rear-facing in the car. Convertible car seats can face the rear until the child is of the right height and weight, at which time they can be switched around (or converted) to face the front. It is estimated by experts that most children will require a convertible car seat at some point.

Britax, a company that has been marketing car seats for the US market for ten years, sweeps reviewers’ picks for the best convertible car seats, even though they are more expensive — sometimes by twice as much — as other convertible car seats. Parents an

  8. QUESTION:
Do you like this car seat? Or do you think that . . .?
the bar at the end would be a hassle (it is attatched to the base, so when I remove the car seat it won’t be there)?

Do you think it looks comfy enough for the baby?

Is it boyish enough (considering there are turquoise lines in it)?
It has great safety ratings along with the snugride, but I have yet to see a fabric I like with the graco snugride…also, this will hold a baby up to 30″ unlike the snugride which only holds up to 28″ What are your thoughts?

    http://www.babycarseats.com/Britax-E9L80L4-BRX1057.html

    • ANSWER:
I like it and it looks very safe and comfortable. I wish I would have seen it for my baby! I think it looks very boyish. You can hang toys from the little bar when your baby gets old enough to lean up a little. Looks like a great, safe choice for your little one. Good Luck

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I find a baby safety helmet?
Does anyone know where I can get a baby helmet. My son is 3 1/2 months old and rolling over and will be crawling soon. We have mostly ceramic tile in my house and I’m afraid he will bump his head soon and for when he starts crawling.

    • ANSWER:
i saw one on a website recently, i’ll try to find it for you

  2. QUESTION:
    BABY SAFETY STATEMENT!!?
I looked out my front window this afternoon and I saw a woman riding her bike wearing a baby sling….with a BABY IN IT, no helmet!!!! I just want to make sure noone else out there is doing it…The baby will get HURT!!!! anyone else seen anything crazy like this before??

If I had gotten the window open quicker or been outside I would have said something!!!

    • ANSWER:
Some people just don’t think before they do things. A couple weeks ago when I was on my way to the store I saw a guy riding a bike with a toddler (probably about 2) on his shoulders!! So here he is riding his bike, and he’s trusting that this little boy is going to be able to hold on to his head tight enough that he won’t fall off. (by the way neither of them were wearing helmets)

  3. QUESTION:
Cycle seats for small children/babies + helmets?
I have had a child seat fitted to the back of my bike for my 11month old son, it is a standard upright seat that looks a little like a child car seat, comes up about 3″ above his head and has a 3 point harness. The problem is when you put on the safety helmet – which adds about 2 inches behind his head, his head is pushed forward so he spends the whole time looking at his knees and gets very upset. Does anyone know of any flat back helmets or other options?

    • ANSWER:
I know exactly what you mean.

Most better quality seats address this by modifying the shell to allow helmet clearance which is one reason I always recommend that my customers don’t buy a cheap seat.

What you CAN do is get a 1″ thick piece of neoprene foam… don’t get regular polystyrene… and place it between the seat shell and the padding. It may take a bit of artful trimming to get it to fit cleanly and touch only the back.

Also, make sure the munchkins helmet is fitted correctly. Front of the helmet must cover the forehead- if he is looking straight ahead the helmet should be parallel to the ground… it shouldn’t be fitted to the crown of the head.

      Good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
    Bicycle safety?
I recently bought a bicycle with the rear child seat attached. I bought it used at a thrift store so it didnt have safety instructions for the seat.

How old does the child have to be before they can ride in it? My 7 month old sits up perfectly by herself and is very strong. But I cant find a safety helmet for anyone under age 3. I have tried walmart and toys’r'us.

Can I put my daughter in the seat? Do they make safety helmets for young babies? If so, where can I find one?

    Thanks for any help!

    • ANSWER:
I believe all bike seats and bike trailers require a child to be at least 1 year. There are helmets available for toddlers, but I believe they also say for 1 year and older. Our local hospital does fittings and helmet sales but only for children over 1 year.

    1. A lot of people think that there is some kind of positive to falling and hurting yourself and learning. Babies aren’t that analytical. If a kid skateboarding falls and hits his head. I don’t think he’s a better skateboarder after falling. He might put a helmet on though.
    2. A babies head doesn’t solidify until age two, at age 1 there brains are most susceptible to injury. Just medical Fact..

I am expecting my first child later this year, and I have no interest in buying it. I do see that some parents would buy it. It just looks very bulky. 6. QUESTION:
Tell me your funny story about child’s safety products?
I am so sick of seeing all the “must have safety products for babies and kids”. I’ll start- stupid helmets for healthy kids learning to walk, and ridiculous knee pads for babies learning to crawl!!!
I am a mother- now I’m wondering what kind of lawsuits lead to these products? It’s overwhelming walking through the “safety aisle” at BabiesRus!

What’s your point….Do you have kids then it’s nothing stupid about putting those inquires out there

  7. QUESTION:
Legal? Baby/toddler getting rides on quads & motorcycles? If not, what consequences?
I saw a neighbor today riding their toddler about 1 1/2 years old on a quad the mother made the father put the baby in a back pack type of baby holder so the baby was atleast attatched to dad, but neither had helmets, ofcourse baby didnt, they dont make them that small. I have seen the dad riding the baby around before on his mini motorcycle, with out a carrier, or a helmets, just holding the baby with one hand and steering with the other. Is this legal? Would the dad, and or mom be arrested if they police saw this? Would the baby be taken by cps, for child endangerment? I just dont see how this could be good for such a small child. At first the child was screaming, and the mom was yelling for the dad to stop that the baby was scared, the dad kept going. The toddler stopped crying, but it wasnt laughing and having a ball, the child was mostly grabbing onto the dads shirt really tight, and kinda not making any emotions.

I believe that the dad was doing this for his own pleasure, with no regards to the baby’s safety, and no regards to whether or not the baby was enjoying himself, and no regards to the mother who was begging him not to take the child for a ride, and yelling for the dad to slow down.

When I was about 2 years old my father used to take me on motorcycle rides around our neighborhood, he would strap me around him with his belt. My mom hated it, I can remember. I do remember enjoying it, being with my dad.

Is this legal? If not, what kind of trouble can parents get into? What would likely happen if authorities witnessed this happening? Thanks to all who answer, and God bless everyone.
We are in Northern California, USA.

I dont want to turn them in, just maybe have a talk with them and let them know if its illegal that they could get in trouble.

    • ANSWER:
In today’s world this would be considered Child Endangerment…

Child endangerment occurs when an adult caregiver or parent places a child in a dangerous or inappropriate situation. While not technically the same as child abuse since it does not involve directly causing harm, child endangerment carries stiff penalties up to and including prison time.

Few crimes engender feelings of revulsion in American citizens like those involving children. Being accused of this crime can have long lasting affects on one’s future, even if the accused is innocent.

It is common for a parent or a caregiver to have no intention of committing this crime. Carelessness, negligence or recklessness may lead to a child endangerment charge.

Is this legal? If not, what kind of trouble can parents get into? What would likely happen if authorities witnessed this happening? Thanks to all who answer, and God bless everyone.
We are in Northern California, USA.
Also I do not want to turn these parents in, I only want to know if this is illegal, and what the possible consequences could/ would be, so that I can talk with the parents and let them know, before the child gets hurt, or they get into a lot of trouble. I want to know facts, not be judgmental, if after the talk it continues I will then take a different approach.

    • ANSWER:
The law varies by state, but in Indianapolis, a man was charged with a felony for carrying a 2 year old on a motorcycle. The child was riding on the gas tank.

Infant/Toddler/Newborn Car Seats – Ensure Their Safety

Author: Kilian

Having a baby is one of the most beautiful experiences in a woman’s life. Therefore, when your baby comes into this world, you have to nurture him in a loving and caring environment. Apart from feeding, bathing and buying clothes for him, you also have to ensure his safety. Especially when you are traveling, your car must have adequate arrangements so that the baby does not feel any sort of discomfort.

It is very important that you have infant/toddler/newborn car seats in your vehicle. Accidents might happen anytime and anywhere. These car seats will keep your child safe and protect him from any harm. The seats should ideally have a five point harness system to ensure that the baby remains in the seat and does not fall out in case of an accident. A lot of car seats come with extra features that help to protect the baby’s head from getting hurt. You can also opt for seats that are adjustable in size. As your child grows, you can adjust the seat accordingly. This choice is extremely feasible for parents having more than one child.

There is another factor that you should take into account, i.e. the weight and age of the baby. If your baby weighs less than twenty pounds you should go for a rear-facing only seat. Make sure that the infant’s head is placed one inch below the head of the seat. This arrangement should continue till the baby weighs at least twenty pounds. After the weight increases you can opt for a front facing one. Ensure that the baby’s ears are positioned below the seat.

When buying infant/toddler/newborn car seats you must also be aware of the product specifications. Ideally, the product should come with a latch system that makes it extremely easy to install in a vehicle. Buying from a reputed manufacturer is a must as you must not compromise your child’s safety. A reputed company will always provide you with quality products.

Don’t make a random purchase just because the product has an attractive color or it looks good. Verify the credibility of the company, check out the customer reviews, and conduct a thorough research about the different models that are currently available. The best way to do this is to go online and search for websites that deal with these products.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Discuss the balance of safety and risk in a toddler environment,?
Discuss the balance of safety and risk in a toddler environment, identifying several areas where you would allow risk, and several where you would not.

    • ANSWER:
What it all boils down to is age appropriate activities…I feel that areas where you might allow risk would be in activities that develop balance, coordination, etc; climbing a play structure or jumping off a step…these items are necessary and need to be practiced but there is always the chance the child could slip and fall, etc. Areas where it should not be allowed are in the materials provided to the child by the teacher i.e., putting scissors at their level instead of precut strips of paper, or items that can be easily swallowed or ingested.

  2. QUESTION:
What do you do for toddler stair safety? Do you have a gate?
We of course watch our son but people keep telling me to get a gate for the top of the stairs… Can you make any recommendations? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
We have a gate at the top (summer extra tall walk through gate from babies r us) and a gate at the bottom. The one at the bottom is just a regular one with the handle that expands, but the one at the top is one that gets installed in the wall. Our daughter is 8 months old and can’t quite walk yet but it only takes a second for them to fall down.

  3. QUESTION:
Toddler Child Safety with entertainment system with glass?
I would like to know if anyone could provide me with information on child safety. I am having trouble finding something to go over my tv entertainment system class door. She likes to open it and play with the sateille dish and etc. I was wondering if there’s I could put around the glass door. I also have a question about the dishwasher, is there something I could put on the door to prevent her to switching the door latch thing. I would really appericate this information. Thank you and have a nice day.

    Lydia

    • ANSWER:
I would honestly take the glass doors off until shes a little older. The last thing you want is for her to trip and fall into it.

As far as the diswasher goes – just keep her out of the kitchen. Its not a safe place for children. Thats what I did with my now 7 year old. I still will not allow her in the kitchen while I’m cooking (and that goes for my 11 year old nephew too).

  4. QUESTION:
What can I do to prevent my toddler to open her safety belt while I drive?
She’s one and a half years old, and has found now the way to unfast her Graco chair’s safety belt while we drive.
Plus, she takes her diapers off too while we are at home!
    What can we do?

    • ANSWER:
If She is taking the diapers off it is time to start potty training. That is her subtle way of saying I do not like my butt wet. You should also go to a children’s store or somewhere the specializes in safety seats and ask about a lock cover because of what she is doing. I’m not sure what they are called or I would look for a web site for you.

  5. QUESTION:
What are the best SAFETY tips from keeping my toddler safe from STRANGERS?
Of course I Never leave my baby alone, but I was wondering if there are some good safety tips for preventing kidnapping, etc.

    • ANSWER:
For younger babies WEAR your baby when you are in public instead of putting the car seat in the shopping cart. In Walmart I always see at least one baby in a shopping cart with mom at least 10 feet away. I’ve seen babies in their car seats in the shopping cart in public restrooms while mom is using the bathroom; it would have been so easy for me to grab the carrier and walk off with the baby. No one would ever have known. A few walks ago I saw this near the customer service desk where a baby was in the shopping cart about 10 feet away from mom. She was talking to the customer service personell and tons of people were walking past. I turned to my husband and told him pretty loudly and distinctly that if anyone wanted to kidnap a baby that was there chance. We got a shopping cart and looked back and mom had moved the baby closer to her.

For a toddler that can understand safety teach them to keep you in their site at all times, and make sure you know where they are. When you’re in public don’t let them walk with out holding on to you or the shopping cart. Also consider getting a harness. Dogs are smart enough to find their owners if they get separated, kids aren’t, which means that I would rather see toddlers leashed in public than dogs.

For older toddlers who can talk, every time you go into a new store find one of the employees and spend a couple of minutes teaching your toddler about how to know good people in the store. Most employees will work well with you. You can teach your child that if they ever lose you in Walmart, they can find one of the people thath as a blue shirt, tan pants, and one of the name tags that look like this. Do it once and they will retain a lot of it.

Also if you and your toddler don’t mind too much, you can wear your toddler when you are out in crowded places. Most wraps and asian baby carriers safely support up to 35 pounds.

You need to be aware of your surroundings and stay alert in situations that are easy for kidnappings.

  6. QUESTION:
How can I find safety scissors for a leftie toddler?
-does okay with regular scissors but I’m sure the left handed scissors would be more comfortable. Any advice, websites or other resources are very welcome!

    • ANSWER:
It is hard to find preschool safety scissors for lefties. Some scissors are good for lefties and righties, but they aren’t always labeled such (especially online). I’ve attached two links to scissors that might help you out. The first link is to Amazon for toddler safety mscissors that definatly work for lefties and righties. The second list is a bunch of lefthanded scissors (but they seemed too sharp for toddlers and preschoolers).

  7. QUESTION:
Where can I buy a child safety device that will prevent my toddler from trying to pull the TV down?
We have an entertainment armoire cabinet and even though it’s anchored to the wall, I can’t find a child safety device that will mount the TV in the shelf as well so she can’t pull it down and potentially injure herself. Thank you!!!!

    • ANSWER:
I looked everywhere (Home Depot, Lowes, online) & this is all I could find:

      http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=261756&parentCategoryId=85183&categoryId=85216&subCategoryId=86200

It works amazingly well – I even left a review, I was so pleased. The key is to get as many kits needed for the weight of your tv. Don’t forget to anchor your dressers as well. My 4 year old “wanted to see what was in the top drawer” when I caught her pulling herself up w/ the bottom drawer out! Thank goodness we had those already installed.

      Hope it works for you!

  8. QUESTION:
Is it okay if a toddler falls asleep while strapped to a safety seat on a bicycle?
When riding, I usually glance back every few minutes, but sometimes my daughter starts nodding. I stop and we take a water break. She gets sleepy because of the cool breeze, the rhythmic feelings of the bicycle, and the incessant visual stimulation, but is it alright to keep peddling with her head down? She’s strapped in, has a safety bar on her child seat on the bike, and we both have helmets.

    • ANSWER:
I’m pretty sure that’s when its time to call it a day and put her down for a nap..

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
need ideas for child safety in home for 9 yr old?
I have a 9 yr old with severe ADHD and other medical problems. He is now getting to the porint to where he can’t trusted safety wise for he has done things that would cause harm to others. I need any ideas on how to child proof my home so others can be safe and him. He can take things off and part if he wants so i’m all out of ideas. If you can think of anything i would greatly appreicate it.

    • ANSWER:
I don’t think you can babyproof for a 9-year-old, as they can get around it just as an adult can. What you can do is supervise very closely to keep him and others safe. Playing by yourself is a privilege you have to earn by playing safely. If you have other children and so physically can’t always be in the room where he is, or if he’s getting in danger in the night when everyone else is asleep, consider putting video baby monitors to keep track of what he’s doing when you’re in another room.

Beyond that, I’d consider some counseling so you can get ideas tailored both to the details of his medical situation and the specific dangerous things he’s doing. If he’s really a danger to himself and others, you’re beyond what any two-paragraph answer here will be able to effectively help with. Ultimately, you’re going to have to find an effective disciplinary strategy so he starts to learn appropriate and safe behavior.

  2. QUESTION:
    Buying child home safety equipment..?
I need to now start buying safety equipment for my home, like stair gates, plug socket protectors, fire guards etc.. which are all quite expensive. I was wondering if there is any help towards getting these as im a single parent on a very low income.

i was made redundant whilst on maternity leave and my husband died before baby was born. i have had the sure start maternity grant but the £500 was spent on a cot, clothes, nappies, pram etc..

if anyone knows of any schemes out there to help provide these will be great… else its walking around those charity shops in hope to find something..
*reply to proud* do you have children? if so you should understand that all these things add up.. a stair gate may only be £30 but you need 2 for top and bottom of the stairs.. fire guard..another £30+.. then u need plug, door and corner protectors, cabinet locks for under sinks etc.. all adds up. you may be fortunate enough to say it doesnt cost alot.. but having to save up for all these things means that only my baby eats that week

    • ANSWER:
In my area there is a project that’s council run and founded (I live in quite a deprived area), they actually contacted me and came to fit cupboard catches and stair gate etc. So if I were you I’d phone your local council and ask them as they provide these services in deprived areas because of the high infant mortality and accident rates.

Oh or failing that you could join Freecycle on yahoo groups and ask for free safety equipment or look out for it.

      Good luck.

    • ANSWER:
I have 5 children, ages 12,8,6,4 and 3.Here is how I safety-proof my home (I’m the only parent, their father left some time ago) for them.I work and they are usually alone at home, especially if the 12yo is somewhere with her friends and the younger brothers and sisters are alone. So,I have to be sure everything is OK.The main is that you can’t safety-proof your house enough for even the smartest child.so,you have to teach them how to take care of themselves if something happens and how to avoid something happening.
      - The bathroom is never being locked but also nobody uninvited doesn’t enter while anyone is there
      - All the children have been taught how to work with computer and TV,so they don’t mess it up
      - The electric appliances are being kept away from wall-plugs after usage. That is required from my children too,if they are washing their clothes or iron them
      - The food I leave them for lunch has to be only warmed up,even the 4yo knows how to do it.they have a timer,so they don’t forget to take the food away from the oven when ready.they all know how to make sandwiches,so they eat if the 12yo or the 8yo aren’t there to help with warmng the lunch or if there is no electricity
      - When I go to work,I lock the door – whe they go out, they lock the house door too.The 12yo,8yo and 6yo have keys from the home door. The other don’t need them yet.
      - The 12yo and 8yo have their own cellphones and all the others have these phones which select certain numbers. They also have a list of important numbers and know what to do in case of fire or an earthquake and anything like that.
      - They know why and in which cases they shouldn’t answer the home-door

Child Gates - Child Safety ...

Preparing Your Child For Infant Day Care

Author: Edith Gates

Infants often need special attention, and you need to make sure that all of their supplies are in order before dropping them off at their day care center. These tips will help you make sure that your child is prepared for their day simply and easily.

What You Need to Pack For Infant Day Care

There are a basic list of supplies that should accompany your infant to day care each and every day. This list of basics is important to help keep your day running smoothly, so that you aren’t called away from your daily activities to bring items to the childcare provider.

  • Diapers. You should always make sure to pack eight to ten diapers for an eight hour stay for your infant.
  • Wipes. While wipes may be provided by your day care, it is a good idea to pack a few in your infant’s bag, especially if your baby has sensitive skin and needs a specific type of wipe.
  • Formula and bottles. Your infant day care may provide meals for older kids, but they typically do not provide formula or bottles. You may want to write your child’s name on their bottle, and note whether you need to pre-fill their bottles, or not. The rules will vary depending on your daycare centers.
  • A change of clothes. Infants are often messy, and may need one or more changes of clothes throughout the day. Choose items that are easily buttoned, such as one piece cotton outfits suited for the weather.
  • Any medications, along with a note from their doctor. Many childcare centers now require that any medications are accompanied by a note from the doctor. Make sure that you include the dropper that is to be used to administer the medications, as well.

Your specific child daycare centers may have specific items that are provided, as well as some limitations on what you can bring from home. By limiting the items sent, such as favorite toys, childcare centers are able to diffuse problems with sharing (which many under-one’s are not disposed toward), and to avoid lost items.

You may also want to consider the weather when packing your infant’s bag for the day. Even though they may not need mittens or a coat while at the daycare center, they will need it when you pick them up.

Preparing for Infant Day Care

In most cases, your infant child care center will provide a list of the must-haves that your child needs to have each day. While you may find that you forget something once in a while, it is important to be prepared. You may find it simpler to pack your infant’s bag the night before, and prepare any bottles needed and storing them in the refrigerator overnight.

Some parents also find it simpler to purchase separate items for day care, such as bottles and a reusable wipes container, so that items can be left in the daycare bag. This will help reduce forgetting necessary items tremendously.

    custom child safety gates?
I have a very odd place between my living room and kitchen. Instead of it being two walls straight across, it has a corner effect. I need to have a child safety gate in this area to keep my kids away from the dangerous appliances and such. I only know of gates that meet wall to wall in a straight line. 3. QUESTION:
At what age was your child when you removed your stair gates?
I understand each child is different, but as an average, when do you not bother with the gates?

    • ANSWER:
Kids are tough, if they can run and have a good grip and good balance and the stairs are not to steep or to long.
If the stairs are not carpeted you may want to do that. The Injury on stairs is the hard wood or concrete toe of the stair.
A half inch of carpet is the difference between a concussion or broken bone and just an owie. Kids love to play on the stairs, Play with them on the stairs. get them used to it and they will be fine. My daughter was doing Tarzan rope swings down the stairs at three. Of course I had her mattress at the bottom of the stairs and all the couch cushions covering all the corners.

  4. QUESTION:
Should I put up gates and child locks on the cuboards and stairs?
I just moved into a condo with my best friend and I have a nine month old baby.We have an upstairs and down stairs and I was wondering should I put up gates because she just learned how to walk. And should I get the little things you put in the outlets? Basicly what do I need to baby proof for the new condo?
omg I’m gunna make sure that doesnt happen to my baby!

    • ANSWER:
yes!!! Use gates at the top and bottom of the stairs. Put outlet covers in all exposed outlets (those little fingers find everything!), and put locks on your cupboards/cabinets….get the kitchen and bathroom cupboards! I actually left one cupboard without locks, this one has my pots and pans, so they are safe for my daughter to play with.

  5. QUESTION:
I am attempting to install child safety gates. Directions call for 9/64 drill bit. Can I use another?
Or, Do I have to go purchase 9/64 size bit? I have 3/32, 1/8, 5/32, and 3/16. Will one of these work without messing anything up? Please help.

    • ANSWER:
It is always best to use what the directions call for. If the hole drilled is to fit bolts or such pieces, then they will not fit if you drill another size hole. You will need to purchase a 9/64 size bit.

If you plan on frequenting house projects such as that, it may be wiser to purchase a set, available at most hardware stores. Best of luck to you.

  6. QUESTION:
What baby gates will keep a child out, but allow two cats to get past?
We have two cats, one is 7lbs and one is close to 14lbs. We’d like to put up a baby gate that will keep a crawling/walking baby out of a room, but will allow the cats access. Does anyone have any ideas to help out?

    • ANSWER:
One of our cats can jump over the gate with no problem, the other cat cannot because she’s simply too fat.

So, we just open the gate for her. Our gate is in a high-traffic area and we’re in and out of it often anyway.

  7. QUESTION:
How old was your child before removing baby gates from steps?

    • ANSWER:
I still have mine up, although my 2-year-old and 3-year-old can both go up and down the stairs just fine. I tried leaving them ungated for a day or two, but the kids decided the stairs were a great place to play, and with the way they wrestle and roughhouse, I was afraid someone would end up going over backwards or something. If I only had one toddler instead of two, I’d take the gate down, but until they can be trusted not to kill each other on those stairs, I’m keeping them gated.

  8. QUESTION:
window gates for a child safety, who should provide this me or the landlord?
six big windows in a private house on the second floor!
i heard that it it the law that the landlord should provide window gates if the person that lives there has a child from the age 1 to 12 years old.

    • ANSWER:
You heard wrong. No law like that.

Obtain permission from the landlord before you install. he will not deny you, but he still should know.

Once you install them you can not take them out, they become private property of the property owner.

Why Buy Baby Changing Bags?

Often times, new parents find out the hard way what they need and don’t need. Allow us to advise you right here and now that baby changing bags are an utmost necessity, not only a convenience. You need a bag to keep nappy equipment in, bottom line.

It’s not just that it’s easier if you have a bag, it’s just not very practical not to have one. Here are just a few good reasons that you absolutely need a bag to store all your nappies and changing gear.

It’s not going to Fit In Your Purse

Maybe your purse can hold several nappies and several wipes, but how about baby powder? What about cloths along with a change of clothes, just in case? The fact is that everything you need in your own home to change nappies, you are going to need when on an outing, too, and it simply won’t fit comfortably inside your purse or in your back pocket.

You Want It All In One Place

Ideally, you would like to be able to just pick up your bag ofnappy products and go, right? You don’t want to stop and search around everywhere each time you go out anywhere. If you keep your nappies and changing equipment in one spot, then it is simply a matter of grab and go. You don’t get that with a loosely organized pile of stuff stuffed underneath the sink. A bag simply makes everything easier.

Portability

Without a bag, you are able to go ahead and store a big stack of nappies, a change of clothes and the cleaning equipment under your arm, or you can have your kid carry them in the stroller. Not really practical, right? Well, a bag takes care of that.

If you’re looking for a bag, our advice is to look for one that you consider stylish and comfy to carry around, since you WILL be carrying it around quite a lot.
