Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
About how old is a 30 lb baby?
    HI guys–

I ended up with two car seats as gifts– the same brand! ha. The thing is, they got GREAT safety ratings and its defintely the brand I want. The thing is, only one of our 2 cars are currently “baby safe”– I drive a Ford Ranger and even though you can turn the airbag off, I dont think I’ll be putting baby in my truck at all.

We’ll be buying a second baby-safe car in mid or late summer. Baby is due this month, so she’ll already be 4+ months old then. The seat is rated for up to 30 lbs.

Should we keep both and plan to use the second one in 4 months or should I return it and get a larger seat when we get the second car? I dont know how hold a 30lb kid is…..

    • ANSWER:
Mty daughter is 2 and weighs 32 pounds, check to see if the car seat has a height requirement as well, some do. You can buy car seats that go from 22 pounds up to 80 pounds, so it is a front facing seat until the child is 40 pounds and then turns into a booster until they are 80 pounds. I’d return the seat and look for one like that.

  2. QUESTION:
Is there a rating for the safety of a car seat?
I just bought a convertible car seat for my 1 year old. His father and grandmother are afriad that it’s going to “break in half” if we get into a wreck. They said there is some kind of rating system for the safety of all car seats. All I can find is convience ratings and a statement saying that all car seats are safe because they all have to pass the govornments tests. So am I missing something? If I am I will definetly check into it since this is my baby’s safety but I can’t find any safety ratings.
Also, if anyone actually has wrecked in one how did that go? It’s a Cosco Scenera 22197ANQ.

    • ANSWER:
      Try this site…

  3. QUESTION:
How to pick a car seat? Convertible or infant to start?
It seems a little silly to purchase two seats in just a few months, but I’m wondering if the infant ones are safer or something?
Also, where can you find the safety ratings for baby gear? I tried consumer reports and apparently you have to pay and subscribe. Surely you don’t have to pay to know the safety of the equipment you need to purchase!!!
Thanks girls, really appreciate any help here! I went looking yesterday and was so confused….
Geez Derek easily offended? I think it’s pretty obvious I wasn’t trying to upset anyone. You’re moodier than me and I’m pregnant, lol!!

    • ANSWER:
The only time an infant bucket seat is safer than a convertible is if baby is on the smaller side (>5 to around 7lbs) Otherwise all seats have to pass the same tests for rear facing, then a different test for forward facing with convertible seats.

  4. QUESTION:
How do i check the safety of an apartment?
I have a wife and a baby girl and i am worried about thier safety. I have tried to look up thier ratings on apartment ratings and its a mixed bag i cant tell who is lying and some look suspicious , i looked at the place and it isnt horrible but i could see why it could be potentially dangerous. I know theres a risk all the time when it comes to apartments and crime has no address but i just want my family to be ok , i thought about buying a gun to protect myself and only keeping it in the home , i just dont know what to do and how to do it.

    • ANSWER:
You can always contact the local police department for crime stats in the area.

  5. QUESTION:
safety specs for 1985 toyota corolla gts?
my little toyo is my baby xD love her to death, but im worried about crash ratings and such since shes an older vehicle. does anyone know where its weak or vulnerable spots are? i dont even think i have an airbag in the thing :/

    much thankies :3

    • ANSWER:
A girl driving an AE86, you got great taste in cars. Make sure to take care of it and learn the basics of drift. It’ll help you be a better driver and avoid accidents.

No airbag in it, but it’s a japanese car from the 1980s. In other words, built like a tank. I feel safer in my 21 year old FC than a brand new RX8, because it was designed to glance off a hit, not crumble like new cars do.

There are plenty of aftermarket safety items for the AE86, in the way of cages and rollbars, which would save you even if you were t-boned by a redneck-scale truck. Look on ebay and you’ll see quite a bit just by putting in “AE86″. When in doubt, ask your fellow Hachi-Roku (AE86) owners at http://forums.club4ag.com/

  6. QUESTION:
Is it worth buying a car that has 190K on it?
I found a 2002 buick lesabre, the body is in clean condition as well as the interior, no rust, small puncture in the bumper. Has newer tires all power options, and only one previous owner. Drives really smooth. They are asking 3,000 well actually 3,950 but are willing to make me a deal. I love this car it’s so comfortable and a smooth ride. It also gets good safety ratings that I want for my baby that will be in the back. It looks like a well maintained vehicle but the km’s are what worries me. Is it worth 3,000?

    • ANSWER:
Miles are like years to a person.

It doesn’t matter the number, it matters how they were achieved.

Someone at 60 years old, might be near death. Or running marathons.

A car at 190k miles, might be about to fall apart, or good for another 500,000 miles.

It all depends on how YOU maintain it, and how it was maintained prior to you getting it.

If you want the car, get it. But if it falls apart, it’s not the car’s fault. Just remember that.

  7. QUESTION:
    Best Mommie Vehicle?
I am 15 weeks pregnant and soon my husband and I will need to purchase a new (or used) vehicle. I am interested in one that will last us through the baby stage (car seat facing backwards) and into toddler stage (forward facing car seat).

we prefer a car or small SUV/Van/Wagon that has excellent safety ratings, an easily accessible back seat (for putting babies in and out), affordable, and ALSO gets great gas mileage (a lot to ask!) The problem with our car now is a rear facing baby seat would require the front seats to be pushed all the way up!

I assume by posting this question in the toddler stage of pregnancy, moms and dads will have some good suggestions of what works and doesn’t work for them. SO, if you have a particular car that you like (or hate), please tell me about it. I am very interested in ease of use and gas mileage.

    Thanks for all your help

    • ANSWER:
I drive a 2004 Passat sedan with automatic transmission that I paid k for (brand new). It gets about 25-32 mpg (city/hwy), depending on how I drive (I have a lead foot).

LATCH installs in the backseat are very easy. There are only two sets of LATCH anchors – they’re outboard, and the inner anchors cannot be used to install a carseat with LATCH in the center position. All three seating positions have locking seatbelts, so you can put a seat in any of the three positions. All three seating positions have a top tether.

I have installed the Britax Marathon rear-facing behind the driver seat with LATCH, forward-facing in both outboard positions with LATCH, and it is currently forward-facing in the center position with the seatbelt.

I have installed the Eddie Bauer 3-in-1 forward-facing in the center position. The seat tilted to the side a little because there’s a little bump in the center of the rear seat, but it was in there tight. I had to remove the base on the 3-in-1. And, I could not get it installed as tightly as I would have liked, in either outboard position. Then again, this is not my favorite seat.

I have installed the Evenflo Triumph forward-facing outboard with LATCH. I could not get it in as tightly as I would have liked it to be – my leather seats did not want to grip on to that flat base on the Triumph.

I have installed the Sunshine Kids Radian forward-facing outboard with LATCH. This seat is in our other vehicle so I’ve not had a lot of experience with it in the center, or with the seatbelt.

  8. QUESTION:
    Forward Facing Car Seat?
We have a little girl that out grew her car seat. She is 9 months and 20 pounds. We found a car seat that has superb safety ratings but it is a forward facing seat. We have heard that infants should be facing the rear until 12 months old. Is facing our baby forward going to put her into danger?? The car seat is for someone her weight……

    • ANSWER:
20 lbs AND 1 yr. is the MINIMUM requirement. If you got pulled over (in Illinois and Wisconsin for sure), not only would you be fined, but DCFS would be contacted and they’d come investigate you due to child endangerment. The best carseat you can get is the Britax Marathon or the Sunshine Kids Radian 80–both can be used rear facing until 35 lbs and forward facing to 65 for the Britax and 80 for the Sunshine Kids.

Rear facing is ALWAYS safest. It’d be safest for adults, too, if it would work! Her neck is not strong enough to sustain her life in the event of a crash. Infant and even toddler necks are not fully developed and the space between vertebrae and the skull is quite large. If her neck snaps forward in a crash, it will separate and she will be internally decapitated. If she’s rear facing, the carseat will absorb the impact of the crash.

Also, if you’re looking at an Evenflo, Graco, Cosco (or Eddie Bauer), or Safety 1st seat, know that these seats are safety tested at 25-30 mph. Britax and Sunshine Kids test their seats at a minimum of 50 mph. Also, when they safety test seats, they use them with the straps on correctly–Evenflo and Cosco seats’ straps twist really easily, which is a major safety hazard, yet it seems unavoidable. Graco and Safety 1st have chest clips that are really easy to unbuckle and they slide up and down the harness really easily, regardless of how tight the harness is on your child. So, just because it’s been given a good safety rating doesn’t mean it has been deemed safe by consumers–know HOW it got the rating–does it pass the minimums or does it exceed them?

  2. QUESTION:
    Baby Expensesfor new parent?
I was just wondering a Canadian site that I could go on to look at baby items and their prices.

Also I was wondering if anybody could suggest maybe a good brand they used for each:

    Baby Food
    Bottles
    Formula
    Infant Cereal
Breast Pump and pads(one that is not as painful)
    Disposable diapers
    Diaper rash cream
    Waterproof matress cover
    Baby lotion/oil
    baby shampoo
    baby soap
    baby carrier
    swing

    crib
    car seat
    baby bathtub
    playpen
    stroller
    safety covers and locks
    latches for cabinets

Also if you could please maybe say what would be best for what time during the baby’s first year
    e.g.
    1-3 months
    4-6 months
    7-9 months
    10-12 months

    Thank you sooo much

    • ANSWER:
Baby Food – Heinz, Gerber, or Beech Nut. There are a lot of no name brands too.
      Bottles – Medela
      Formula – I didn’t use formula.
Infant Cereal -Nestle for earlier months (I found my kids digested it easier) and Heinz later on.
Breast Pump and pads(one that is not as painful) – Medela electric pump. It’s pricey, but it’ll change you’re life. As for pads, the best I found are silicone pads. They don’t just absorb the milk, they keep your breasts from leaking!
Disposable diapers – My kids had problems with Pampers, but Huggies were great for the first few months. When their skin got a little tougher, Superstore/Loblaws brand, Teddy’s Choice were perfect. They’ve recently changed their diapers, but they’re still good.
      Diaper rash cream – Penaten
Waterproof matress cover – Not sure.. ours was a gift.
      Baby lotion/oil -Johnson’s
      baby shampoo- Johnson’s
      baby soap – Johnson’s
baby carrier – I love the heart to heart sling.
swing – Mine’s Graco.. just make sure it’s not a wind up or you’ll go crazy.
      bassinet – Didn’t have one.
crib – Anything’s good. It’s worth looking at the ones that convert to beds.
car seat – We have Graco and Evenflo. Both are good.
baby bathtub – Anything. They only use them for a couple of months.
playpen – Ours is Cosco and it’s great.
stroller – This is better to go online and check out individual models from each company. We’ve had problems with wheels not staying on ours (Evenflo). The systems with the car seats that attach are fantastic!
safety covers and locks – Safety First
latches for cabinets – Safety First

I’m not entirely sure what you mean about what is best from each month, but if you get “What to Expect the First Year,” you’ll have all the information you will need! You can typically find books like this at second hand shops for REALLY cheap. Libraries have them too!

  3. QUESTION:
How can I stop my large “114lb” dog from breaking down the baby gate and getting into the trashcan?
    Hello folks… I have a 6 y.o. black lab & bloodhound mix. He’s a GREAT dog…def the best dog I’ve ever had! He’s great with kids and people in general. BUT there’s 1 problem…
The problem, which just started recently in the past month or so, is that he gets into the trash and scatters it EVERYWHERE in the kitchen.
    Here’s a little background:
He’s such a great dog when I’m home which is pretty much all the time other than when I’m working so he’s home alone for about 12 hours per day. He’s been on this same schedule for almost 2 years and I’ve NEVER had this or any other problems with him. He’s just a real chilled out dog! There was 1 time about a year ago when I left a plate on the kitchen counter and he got “stood up” on his 2 hind legs and punished it…gone before I could count to 3. So I decided to buy baby gates and put them up to block the 2 entrances to my kitchen. Everything was great until about a month ago when he broke down the baby gate and got in and ate all kinds of stuff that was in the trash. The trashcan is a taller one WITH A LID. What he does is knocks it over and it’s history…TRASH EVERYWHERE!!! I figured the gates would be good enough but obviously they’re not. He weighs 114 lbs and I guess goes through them with ease when he wants to.
I had just taken the trash out lsat night so the only things in there were some paper towels and other random garbage BUT NO FOOD! I bought 2 diff kinds of repellent and have tried both with no success. I sprayed the inside of the can as well as the inside of the trash bag hoping it would keep him away.
I really don’t want to move the can which would be the obvious solution…there’s pretty much nowhere else to put it. I’ve read about using a smaller can and putting it into a kitchen cabinet with child safety locks but like I said I’d rather not have to move the can or get a new smaller one to put in the cabinet.
My goal with this is to hopefully get some more new ideas of possible solutions…
    Things to remember:
    He weighs 114 lbs.
When he got into the trash last night there was NOT any food in it.
He breaks down the baby gate I assume pretty easily.
The current trash can is a larger can and has a top that closes.
I’d rather not have to move or get a new trash can…size doesn’t matter he’ll get inside it regardless I think. By moving the trash can I would just be masking his issue…I really just want to make him stop!
I’ve also put hot sauce in the trash bag itself and once again had no luck. It seems like NOTHING will keep him out!
My next move is to buy a crate and stick him in the crate while I’m at work during the day. I’d really rather not do that either.
I also read about somehow putting mouse traps on or around the trash can which is something I have not tried yet because I also have a cat and wouldn’t want that poor guy to caught up in a trap especially when he hasn’t done anything wrong.
Please leave constructive ideas/remedies if you do respond to this. Don’t need people bit$%ing about anything…

I’m basically just hoping to get some new fresh ideas from you guys…!!!

    THANKS IN ADVANCE FOLKS!!!

    • ANSWER:
keep tempting items out of the can.. first and fore most. Yes he will still get into it at first, because he was self-rewarded with food when he got into it before. If he finds there’s no longer food in there after several attempts, he may not be so persistant about it.

Get stronger baby gates. Im assuming you are using the pressure-mounted type. Use the kind that had hardware to actually attatch it to the wall. Abit harder to knock down a baby gate that’s screwed into the wall!

You may want to consider a smaller can just to throw food items in, so you cont have to take out the entire trash just for a few things.

Or another option is to just put the trash away when you are gone.. if he only does it when you are away.

He may also be getting in the trash to amuse himself too. He’s bored and looking for something to do. He’s home alone 12 hours, cant say I blame him. Try getting him more exercize and attention when you are home.. if possible find someone to come mid-day to walk him.

Dont do mousetraps.. all you will succeed in doing is injuring the dog.

One think you could try is a rubber mat.. the kind that has the bumpy bottom.. put it upside down at your entrances or near the can. Most dogs dont like the texture.

  4. QUESTION:
    Am I missing anything?
I’m nine weeks pregnant, and I already went shopping for baby stuff, in yellow because I don’t know the sex. Is there anything you can think of that I could be missing? I’m not going to shop for clothes until I know the sex, though.

    What I have bought:
    Size 1 Pampers
Cherry wood crib that forms into a daybed, then toddler bed
    Mattress
6 – 5 oz. baby bottles and extra nipples
    Stage one toys and movies
    Baby books
    Infant car seat
    Stroller
    Changing Station
    Baby hangers
    Dresser
    High Chair
    Bouncer
    Crib sheets and blankets
    Reciving Blankets
    Nursery Decor
    Stuffed animals
    Infant swing
    Bibs
    Burp-up Towels
    Bottle scrub brush
    Einstein Play Gym
    Baby Moniter
    Breast Pump and supplies
    Safety gates
    Safety Cabinet locks
    Electric socket covers
    Doctor suggested Medicines
    Bathing Materials
    Grooming Materials
    Baby bath seat
    Glider
Okay so I need a Bumbo seat, a Jumperoo, Newborn diapers, bigger bottles, a Boppy, a CD player and classical music and bible bedtime stories! Anything else?
    Oh, Vaseline! Great idea!
I am planning to breastfeed, but I have to have bottles for when I go out to feed it with pumped breast milk.

    • ANSWER:
There’s a good chance you won’t need newborn size diapers, they will give you some in the hospital and there’s a good chance that by the time you are through those your wee one will be in size 1.
You will want a baby thermometer, a nasal aspirator, and infant acetaminophen (Tylenol). Those are things you will want to have on hand. I needed mine the week after I brought my little one home.

I would wait though, there’s a good chance you will get many of those things as gifts.

There are some things on your list that you won’t need:

Baby hangers – trust me, you won’t use them longer then a few days.
Stuffed animals – they are a hazard in cribs and your baby won’t even notice them until they are much older

Some of the things you will not need until MUCH later (play gym, toys and movies, safety gates, cabinet locks, outlet covers, bath seat, Bumbo (we have one that we didn’t even use, I would wait to get that until you feel you NEED it, many babies won’t even use one), high chair), but if you have the space to store it then it can’t hurt.

I am not trying to bring you down or anything, but just trying to give you a realistic idea of what you need (and don’t need).

      Good luck :)

  5. QUESTION:
how much do these baby supplies cost?

  6. QUESTION:
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes?
from garage sales and second hand stores. It’s our first baby, and I know she’s just trying to help us since we don’t have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i’ll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them.

I’d like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!

I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused” :(

    Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!

    • ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

  7. QUESTION:
How have you baby-proofed your home?
My son is 5 1/2 months old and we can tell he’s just days away from crawling. He’s made a huge advancement in his rolling in the past few days and is now doing an army crawl, but moving backwards. So my husband and I know that we’ve got to baby proof the house now. We know to get all the cabinets locked as well as covering all the unused wall outlets.

But my question is we have a TV console that is open, no doors. So all our gaming consoles, DVD player, DVR, etc are all exposed as well as all the cables in the back. My husband is in IT so he’s meticulous about keeping the cables organized and they’re all neatly zip-tied together, but I worry about my son getting back there. I keep a close eye on him, but you always hear the stories that begin, “I just turned around for a second…” So how would you go about making the TV console baby proof? Would you recommend just getting a new console that would close? I’m not sure we have the money to do that right away, but it’s something we could save for. My son’s safety comes first.

Also, we have a fireplace with a brick hearth. Has anyone used the fireplace safety pads that you can buy at Babies R Us? Are they worth it or is there a better product out there? Here’s the pads I’m talking about: http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3240295
Just wanted to add that we keep our decor pretty simple, so no knick knacks and such.

Thanks for the tip on using the gate in front of the tv console. I think we might try that. I don’t think we’re going to go overboard baby proofing, I think a lot of it has to do with common sense, like shutting the door like many of you have mentioned.
Michelle – I know exactly how you feel. It’s a little overwhelming!

    • ANSWER:
Get one of those long gates and put it across the TV. Looks kinda tacky but it’ll keep him out. We just put one up since my daughter rolls to the TV stand too.

EDIT: I just looked back over the question and a long gate might work for the fireplace. My friend had a marble fireplace and that’s exactly what she did. I hope this helps.

    • ANSWER:
Wow! I don’t have many of those things and I have a 4 month old! Lol you did a good job :) Good luck, and may God bless you and help with your delivery!!!

One suggestion though, as far as clothes go, bring with you a newborn outfit to the hospital just in case. I didn’t have one and had to ask my sister to get one! my baby was much smaller than I had expected and all the 0-3month clothing was huge on her! My favorite brand of clothes is carters and miniwear and koala baby (both from babies r us). Also best brand for breastmilk storage bags is lansinoh.

  2. QUESTION:
    car seat reviews… safety 1st onboard 35.?
ive been looking for reviews on this car seat but havent had much luck finding anything.

heres a picture of the car seat im questioning:

    http://s.sears.com/is/image/Sears/04914723000_20091210004010904?hei=600&wid=600&op_sharpen=1&qlt=90,0&resMode=sharp&op_usm=0.9,0.5,0,0

im looking for a car seat thats black or mostly black, cheaper then 0, not wide, heavy and bulky works with shopping carts easily, and fits in booths at restarunts. i really dislike the “z” shaped handles on the evenflow car seats. i like the regular graco sungrides but cant find anything thats black or mostly black. i do not like the graco sungride 35s as they look to bulky and reviews say they are heavy and dont fit most places.

i saw the safety 1st car seats and i like the way they look but ive never bought one before. what are some other peoples thoughts about these car seats? this will be my 4th baby and it will be my first boy. all my girls weighed between 8 and 10 lbs so this baby will most likely be in that range as well.

    thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
I just found the graco snugride platinum online and it looks black and white about 1/2 and 1/2 of each color. I found it for 0 but maybe you can find a website and a coupon code for that website. (Before I make any internet purchases I google the name of the company with the words “coupon code” next to it and sometimes you can get up to a 20% off discount if that helps).

  3. QUESTION:
how do i adjust the seatbelt of a baby car seat?
my mom doesnt know how to adjust my toddler brother’s car seat. help please. it’s called Safety 1st Alpha Omega Elite Convertible Car Seat. if there is a user manual that i can read online free that would be great

    • ANSWER:
By “seatbelt” I am assuming that you mean the straps. There will be a little strap kind-of in between his legs, right above the red handle thing. To tighten the straps, just pull on that. To loosen them, you lift up the little piece of fabric covering the strap and push in the metal piece. Then pull on the straps and they will get looser. Remember that the chest clip should always be at armpit level to position the straps correctly in case of an accident. Also, the straps themselves should always be snug. You should never be able to pinch them. If you can, they are too loose and need to be tighter. Hope I helped!

  4. QUESTION:
Has anyone used the Sam’s Club Safety 1st car seat?
The one suitable for both newborns and toddlers?

(I have bought a newborn car seat, but there has been a delay with my order, and I’m due any day. So we’re thinking of getting something that is suitable for a toddler in order not to waste our money on something we won’t use; but something we can use on the trip back home too and the first few days in case our order does not arrive before the baby).

    • ANSWER:
it won’t fit a newborn, the harness heights are too high, the lowest slots are 10inches and the average newborn is around 6-8inches.

the best convertible seats for a newborn that you would get long term use out of are the graco myride 65, the sunshine kids radians, and the true fit. these are the only ones with harness heights or infant inserts suitable for a newborn child. this is because the straps must come from just at or below the shoulders while the child is rearfacing.

  5. QUESTION:
how to adjust safety 1st harness on car seat (PLEASE HELP)?
I have the Safety 1st ProPack Travel System – Clemson care seat and stroller. Today I wanted to adjust the harness to the 2nd point for my baby. It has five points. but I cant remember how to put the buckles in the back of the car seat correct. I just cant remember. I cant fine the manual either. please help.

    • ANSWER:
This may hopefully help if not too late. It’s the Safety 1st Website. Just type in the model number etc of the car seat and it should give you a manual. From the site it says the details should be on the carseat.

  6. QUESTION:
Baby Car Seats Crash Test Information?
    Newborn and Baby
Consumer Reports Magazine Crash test worries

In its February 2007 issue, Consumer Reports magazine reported on crash tests it performed to test the safety of car seats. The results were not encouraging.

Most of the infant car seats tested by Consumer Reports “failed disastrously” in crashes at speeds as low as 56 km/h. The seats came off their bases or twisted in place, the report said. In one case, a test dummy was hurled more than nine metres.

Of the 12 car seats tested, Consumer Reports said it could recommend only two, and it urged a U.S. federal recall of the poorest performing seat, the Evenflo Discovery, which is not sold in Canada.

All the car seats passed U.S. standards — but Consumer Reports argues those standards should be raised.

To be sold in Canada and the United States, an infant seat must perform adequately in a 48 km/h frontal crash, and Consumer Reports found that all but the Discovery did so. But it noted that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducts its crash tests for new cars at higher speeds — 56 km/h for frontal crashes and 61 km/h for side crashes — so the magazine tested the seats at those speeds.

“It’s unconscionable that infant seats, which are designed to protect the most vulnerable children, aren’t routinely tested the same as new cars,” said Consumer Reports’ Don Mays, a product safety director.

The only seats that passed all the tests were the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS — expanded polystyrene foam — both selling for about US. Consumer Reports urged parents shopping for seats to buy one of those two, but it also noted that “any child car seat is better than no seat at all.”

It also said some seats performed better when attached by vehicle safety belts than when attached with the LATCH system. The system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, includes belts that hook the base of a car seat to metal anchors in the vehicle.

    Consumer Report Article
On January 4, 2007, Consumer Reports published a safety alert in the U.S. claiming that most infant car seats failed their new front- and side-crash evaluation tests. The report also claims that of 12 seats tested, only two performed well: the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS (i.e., expanded polystyrene). Only six of the twelve infant car seat models chosen by Consumer Reports for this testing are officially certified for and marketed in Canada. They are: the Graco SnugRide; the Peg-Perego Primo Viaggio SIP; the Evenflo Embrace V; the Graco SafeSeat; the Safety 1st Designer 22; and the Combi Centre ST.
Transport Canada wants to reassure the Canadian travelling public that the Department’s collision investigations and data analyses do not support the results obtained by Consumer Reports. When car seats are used correctly, they perform effectively in motor vehicle collisions and child occupants are afforded optimum protection.

The Department takes the safety of children travelling in vehicles very seriously and is continually working to improve crash protection for children through research, development and enforcement of safety regulations, participation in various national and international committees that work on policy development, and public awareness campaigns.

  7. QUESTION:
Is this Safety 1st Complete Air, a good car seat for a newborn?
I was wondering if this car seat would be a good seat for a new born baby, a baby coming home from the hospital… I am going to have it installed by the fire department because it does seem too complicated to do it myself. But it will be installed [rear facing] and all though the car seat is told to fit babies starting at 5 ibs. i’ve read reviews & some people beg to differ…

Is the Safety 1st complete Air convertible car seat a good car seat for a new born?
Will it work fine in a 95 honda accord?
    PROS & CONS?

    • ANSWER:
The standout feature of the Safety 1st Complete Air car seat is the Air Protect side-impact protection system. The manufacturer offers some videos on their website that show the crash testing, and the Air Protect system certainly appears to provide excellent head protection in a side impact crash…

  8. QUESTION:
Does the graco “snap ‘n’ go” stroller frame fit a safety 1st infant car seat?
or the baby trend snap n go.. neither one specifies- they just say that they fit all major brands but as far as i know safety 1st is fairly new?? does anyone have this combo?

    • ANSWER:
I don’t know the answer to this for sure but I would suspect that they both do work with the Safety 1st car seat. Your best bet would be to go down to Babies R Us and give it a try.

I LOVE my Baby Trend Snap N Go (I used it with a Combi infant carrier). I totally think this is the way to go, especially if your baby will be coming in and out of the car a lot!

      Good Luck

Top 10 Baby Stroller Safety Tips

By Helen Walters

Baby strollers are an essential part of family life. They help us parents get on with what we need to do when our children can’t keep up with us. They give our children as ‘safe place’ to retreat to when the world gets a little too big for them. For the most part baby strollers are very safe. However as with any ‘tool’ there are always risks and dangers. This article will give you 10 basic safety tips for using your baby stroller to make sure that it is as safe as possible for you and your children to use.

Basic Baby stroller Safety

1) Be sure the stroller you’re using is the right size for your child. Much like with a car seat, different sized kids need different sized strollers. This is not only for their comfort, but also for their safety. In the wrong size of stroller padding doesn’t rest where it should on the child’s body, hands can reach things they shouldn’t, and weight isn’t distributed properly which can make a stroller unbalanced.

2) Properly strap your child in at all times. If you start off using the belts right from the start and stick with it, you’ll get no complaints from your kids. Just be sure that they are secure enough, but not too tight. The straps aren’t only to keep the child from climbing out of the stroller, they also keep them from falling out if it tips severely, or hits a big rut.

3) If you are using a combo unit (car seat and stroller together), always double check to be sure that the car seat latches in properly.

Baby stroller maintenance

4) Always make sure the brake is in good working order. Regularly check all cables and pads, or latches to be sure they are working well and are free of any obstructions or dirt.

5) Be sure to check the wheels for problems and make sure that they are in good condition. This doesn’t take much. Just be sure they are all working well, aren’t wobbling too much and aren’t wearing out.

6) OK, this may sound obvious, but always be sure all wheels are on tight. Some models of strollers – especially jogging baby strollers – have removable wheels. You need to be sure they are always secure before heading out. I once saw a woman tip her jogging stroller back to go over a curb and watched the front wheel take off down the hill after it fell off.

General Use

7) Most newer strollers come with many storage areas. Some of the largest are usually at the back. Be sure you do not overload these. It is really easy for an overloaded stroller to tip over backwards and toss your baby out!

8) Don’t load heavy items on top of your child while they are in the stroller.

9) The same goes for hot drinks and such. Never leave hot drinks above your child on the stroller. The last thing your child needs is a 1/2 litre of screaming hot mocha java in the face!

10) Finally, never, ever, leave your child unattended in a stroller. This doesn’t mean you have to be no more than a foot away at all times. Just be sure that either you, or another responsible adult (not child) is within easy reach at all times.

Keep these tips in mind as you go about your daily business and use your stroller. It will keep your children safer and give you more peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How can I get parts for my Safety 1st baby toy?
The tractor that plays nursery rhyme songs and sits on top of the circular, Farm -themed, two-leveled baby seat and play center that was manufatured about three years ago stopped playing when my granddaughter threw up on it and I washed it under running water. My husband replaced the batteries, but it still won’t work.

    • ANSWER:
go to baby r rus a baby store full of baby stuff i go there.

  2. QUESTION:
Has anyone else used the Safety 1st Baby Plus Pre Natal Education System?
I was wondering of the claims were true. Did your baby sleep better? Was he / she more content? I figured it couldn’t hurt.

    Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
I used it throughout my pregnancy but I wasn’t as strict with following the schedule as it called for. It’s hard to know if my son was affected or if it’s just his nature (he is our first so we have nothing to compare to) but he is a well-natured, happy little boy. He just turned 1 last week. He rolled over at 3 months, crawled at 6, cruised at 7-1/2. He hasn’t started walking yet but I think that is because he’s smart enough to know that he’ll get there faster crawling (he’s VERY fast). He weaned himself of his middle of the night feedings and started sleeping through the night at the same time at 6 months. Now he goes to sleep with no problem and sleeps almost 12 hours a night. Rarely cries “just because”.
Again, hard to know if it was because of the Baby Plus or just great genes :) but I would/will do it again.

  3. QUESTION:
i need to find a battery for a safety 1st baby moniter model number SF244611 for the base moniter?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, I think you can get some that you are able to change the channel on when you pick up other peoples signals. I used to be able to hear my neighbor talking on the phone–just her end, and I called her and told her she should change her channel on her hand-held cordless phone. Google it.

  8. QUESTION:
Does anyone own this Safety 1st baby/bath item?
My daughter is 9 months old and her infant tub is getting too small for her and I’m nervous about bathing her in the big bath tub. She can sit on her own and I have tried bathing her in the sink but she’s also getting too big for that.

My question is, does anyone have the Safety 1st tubside bath seat? The one that attaches to the side of the bath tub? Is it a good bath seat? How long can I use it for, age/weight wise? Do/did you find it useful? If not can you recommend something else you have found useful?

Thanks for the info in advance :)

    • ANSWER:
Its a good bathseat as long as shes not pulling to stand. It doesnt have height or weight requirements on it at all so its really just till they can pull themselves out of it. We have one but we dont use it anymore but i will say i loved it while we used it and now we got sticky fish for the bottom of the tub so they dont slip all around.

I would definitely reccomend it though if your looking for something to just keep her up and in place in works very well. We used ours from 4 months to just before 13 months for our slow sitter.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Should I get a car seat or booster seat for a 6mth old?
My son is almost 7kgs and we need to buy a carseat for him, would you recommend a 8kg – Booster seat? For example: Hipod Senator, MaxiRider II, The Explorer? These look more suited to a larger child to me, and though they say from 8kg, I’m thinking he still needs more padding than that… However, it would be more cost effective in the long run, and if its met Australian safety standards then it should be well safe for an 8kg baby, shouldn’t it? He’s been using a hired Safe n Sound baby capsule that pulls out so far. What would you recommend as the next step?

    • ANSWER:
not sure what the Australian laws are but here in Canada a child MUST be rear facing until they are 20lbs and 1 year old. I would recomend a convertible car seat. I have one made by Safety 1st that can be rear facing with the 5pt harness, forward facing with the 5pt harness and a booster seat with the seat belt. We paid about 0CAD for it and is wonderful!

How to Buy a Baby Stroller or Baby Strollers System

Author: Thord Hall

The most important issue with any stroller or baby strollers system should be safety.  Basically, you should concentrate on dealing with companies that keep safety in mind when designing their products.  When it comes to value, a baby strollers system which includes the stroller, a car seat and sometimes a diaper bag will a more cost effective move.

The better quality strollers will generally have all the features that you need, but there are certain things that you should look for anyway.  Be sure that the stroller or baby strollers system has washable fabric.  Make sure that your stroller will fold easily, and also fit in your vehicle once it is folded.  This doesn’t sound like much, but there is nothing more frustrating than trying to put a stroller in a spot that is too small.  Check your measurements first.  Other options that are also important are adjustable telescopic handles, adequate storage, adjustable seats and on a baby strollers system, a switch chassis that can be used with both the car seat and the stroller seat.

Safety and convenience features go hand in hand.  The quality baby strollers have features that contribute to the overall safety of the unit.  One simple example is wheels.  Larger wheels with quality bearings make a stroller much easier to push which is more comfortable for the person pushing.  However, large wheels also make a stroller more stable and less likely to tip, which is a great safety feature.

Once you start looking at the prices for your baby stroller or baby strollers system, you will find a wide range from low to high.  You can find cheap strollers everywhere.  Many of the cheaper models will have all the features, and many will not.  Basically, keep in mind that you get what you pay for.  You can’t really cut corners on safety features and many of the cheaper models with so-called safety features are made with lower quality materials that do not last.

Once you decide upon a stroller or a combination baby strollers system, you can find somereputable names in strollers out there.  One very reputable and high end company is Stokke.  Their products are very chic and quite stylish and very high quality.  However, they are quite expensive.  If money is no object, Stokke can and will supply you with a great baby stroller or baby strollers system.

There are also other good companies that offer strollers of great quality with great safety features that are more affordable.   One company in particular is Peg Perego.  We liked their strollers and purchased a baby strollers system online.  We visited a review site, looked around the site and made our choice.  It was so much easier than going from store to store and we have been very pleased with our purchase.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
I’m scared & paranoid for the safety of my baby?
Before I was completely oblivious to everything and anything going on around me. I never watched the news channel…heck I didn’t even know what channel it was on or anything. I was in my early 20s partying…studying…and that’s pretty much it.

Well..I’m married now..with a 10 mth old daughter…and I’ve been watching the news every morning practically all day..everyday. What’s got me paranoid…is these bizarre cases that I hear about on tv….

One case where natural apple juice killed 2-3 babies..because the fruit picker picked an apple off of the ground and the company was dedicated to “natural” apple juice so they didn’t do a certain step that didn’t completely kill bacteria…etc.etc…samonella..

Two recent ones are the peanut butter company and the weird lady found at the shopping center inserting weird liquid into baby foods.

Seriously…these things are really getting to me. How the heck am I supposed to know that the food that I buy natural or not is okay and safe for my baby?! There are nutcases out there doing weird outrageous things…and companies that try to cut corners. GEEZ..help someone…anyone else worried about these things?

    • ANSWER:
oh wow I didn’t even know about this stuff. Thats interesting.

  3. QUESTION:
Did you actually “baby-proof” your house?
Okay well I’m always reading how you should cover corners, put on socket cover, lock the toilet etc, but I don’t know anyone who actually does all of that! My friend just had #2 and she also has a 15 month old and the only “baby-proofing” they do is put up a gate to keep them out of the kitchen which is the same thing I do with my dogs. They never have any trouble or injuries and now it seems silly to waste money on safety locks, and knobs etc. So tell me, did you actually baby-proof and why or why not???

    • ANSWER:
We have not really “baby proofed” I agree, I think it is a waste of money (for some things). Instead, we are teaching our 11 month old…who has been crawling since 5 months and walking since 8 months (walking on furniture first then unassisted) to not touch things that are not his and the only thing we have done is a baby gate at the top of the stairs and locks on the kitchen cupboards (just recently). We have also picked things up that could be dangerous and socket covers on the outlets he could reach…but that is it. I can also close all the doors to the rooms in our house and keep him out that way. But realistically, I would rather him learn to not touch that way when we go to other peoples houses that do not have kids, or have older kids, it is not an issue. If you crazy baby proof, then they never lean to not touch, or “no” … it is kinda a hard thing to figure out…but I also don’t leave him alone to the point where he could get into something.

  4. QUESTION:
Where is a good place to get child safety devices?
Like edge bumpers for tables, cabinet door latches, etc. Baby’s r us has them, but it costs around for one of those corner things. It costs for one of those things that’s like a volleyball net for the balconey railings. Is there a cheaper way to go?

    • ANSWER:
I just love ebay!!! you can get everything you need from this one seller ‘babysafetyforless’ is the user id. I bought my whole household full of everything I needed with this seller. This is all they sell and cheap. and everything is new also they sell tons of hard to find safety stuff. Good luck !!

  5. QUESTION:
My baby keeps bumping his head everywhere!!!!?
My boy is ten months every time I put him on the floor to crawl he pulls up un the furniture I already babyproofed with the safety first foam thingys that you put on the corners of the tables but he always falls and bumps his head on the chair or sofa or whatever just today he has bump his head like 5 times I knew that was going to happen but I’m scared his gonna get seriuosly hurt and my bf blames everytime cause he says I’m not watching him I can’t be right next to him 24/7 I’m getting the gates that become an enclosed playard so he can play and crawl without getting hurt. But what should I do right now he doesn’t want the jumparoo anymore I want to let him be a kid but i don’t want him to get hurt. Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
If he is really bumping his head that much, he will learn that it hurts and to stop doing it. If it’s a soft thing he falls on like sofa, don’t worry too much. Try wrapping blankets around what he normally bumps and see if that helps.

He will eventually get more balance and learn not to bump everything.

Tell your BF he can suck it LOL, it’s hard being a parent.

  6. QUESTION:
What is a good baby gate for the bottom of the stairs?
We have one made by The First Years at the top of the stairs that has a swinging door and a foot pedal to open it. We bought two of those but when we tried to put the second one at the bottom of the stairs it was too tall. The wall with the banister wasn’t tall enough to secure one of the top corners. Now I want a gate with a swinging door for safety reasons like not stepping over a gate while going up/down the stairs while holding my son. But I need one that is the height of the normal pressure gates. Also because of how the wall is set up we can’t screw it into the wall and it has weird baseboards and stuff so it has to have the adjustable corners. Like the one at the top of the stairs in all four corners you screw out the mount until it meets the wall… does that make sense?

    • ANSWER:
Uhm…I am just 14.5 and putting this out there…but, you should really go to Babies R Us and ask someone there.
I know they have baby gates, because…well, it’s a baby store.

We’ve had a baby gate for our dog, but it didn’t have a swinging door…

I tried looking at some, and I found some, but they are kind of…pricey..which is weird…because…well, just because prices for plastic and wood shouldn’t be this high…oh well.

  7. QUESTION:
    Infant safety advice.?
My daughter is starting to pull herself upright and is soon to be walking. So we need to baby proof. We’re looking for soft corner protecters to put on our assorted end tables, but we’re looking for brands that won’t interfere with the finish of the furniture. Many of our furniture are antique- quality. Any suggestions? Most that I have seen are of the double sided tape variety.

    • ANSWER:
We bought foam pipe insulation and sort of formed it all the way around our furniture (not just the corners) . It is CHEAP and since it is just sort of wrapped there it will not mar furniture.

      Good Luck!

  8. QUESTION:
Worried for my dogs’ safety, not sure what to do?
Basically what the title is. I have 7 dogs. All of them are relatively well trained, with the exception of my skittish rescue (fine in the house, it’s around strangers when she ‘spazzes’) and my 9 week old Jack Russell who still enjoys chewing on things in the house. My other dogs are from the ages of 2 and 5 years old. All of them bar two are Jack Russell Terriers. I have five Jacks and two Doberman…

Well, I’m still living at home. As is my sister, who is three years older than me…The, too, owns a dog. A male Jack Russell, age 3. I’ll just call my sister Y…Well, Y has always been very hands-on with the dogs. She leans on them, Uses her hand or shoe instead of words and doesn’t really do any training with her dog. Though, she’s happy to criticise My training methods and walking routines. Her latest complaint is that I never walk my first dog, a 5y/o Jack Russell female, who’s recently been spayed…Shocker…Also the complain about my 10m/o Doberman having some social issues. Never mind the fact she never takes any of them out, nor does she do anything but yell and hurt her dog. Anyway, I’ve often walked in the room and seen her with my second oldest dog pinned to the floor. “It’s a way to be dominant!” she usually says. A load of crap…Anyway, I’ve just been sitting at my computer and hear a loud thump and a squeak. I turned around and she’d stomped her feet at my 9w/o puppy and scared him into running into the baby gate, hitting his eye on the corner of the gate. Because he was chewing the couch. Well…I just ‘asked her nicely’ *wink wink* not to do it to my puppy, or any of my dogs, and she said that if she tells him to leave it he chews harder. No…”No, if you tell him to leave it, he normally looks at you…”

Her dog flinches away and tries to hide whenever he barks, or bounces at you, or runs around the house and Y is in the room. Mine have started to do this also, only mine don’t just get scared when Y is in the room. They’re now scared when I come in and see them doing something bad. Now, they run and hide behind the chair or in their dog beds, whereas before they’d only scatter and wag their tails as if to say “You saw nothing’!” I’ve never hit my dogs before…I’ve raised my voice, but I’ve never actually HIT them. All of my dogs, including 9w/o pup, are jumpy atm.

I’m having someone come down to check on my rescue later this week, just to make sure she’s in an OK home, getting on fine, etc…I’m worried that all of the dogs will get scared when this person comes over. I’ve had the RSPCA come down once before, thanks to my not-to-friendly neighbour, but everything went fine…If she calls them down now, all of them are terrified and will most likely act as if I beat them. Because I have so many dogs, and one CANNOT leave the house no matter what (Hasn’t had all his vaccines), I can’t really take them anywhere to get away from Y, even for an hour or two. I’ve been keeping them all in the room that I’m in for a few weeks now, but obviously Y will be in that room at some point.

She’s stubborn and thinks she’s right about everything. I’ve told her not to hit my dogs lots of times but she just ignores me all the time. I’ve told our parents also, but she ignores them as w

    • ANSWER:
Don’t allow your dogs near your sister. Keep them outside or in your room and get a lock that you can use a key on so you can lock your room when you leave and then she can’t get in. Also you may try doing exactly what your sister does to the dogs to her, hit her, slap her, kick her off the couch!! lol don’t do that but seriously keep your dogs away from her, she obviously should not own a dog if she is abusive! I feel bad for her dogs :(

What is a safe and diverse area to raise children in Florida?
My family is thinking of relocating to Florida soon and we would like to know, what city is a good place to raise children? Safety is the most important, although diversity is a factor also. Please help with suggestions. We are moving from Maryland.

    • ANSWER:
i would go southwest florida — sarasota down —

public schools in orlando are really bad. the highest ranked public high school is in a largely poor and latin part of town. i don’t get these weirdos that like their gated communities on the east side. every house looks the same and you have to pay the home owners association to make sure it stays that way. east orlando has the diversity of colorado. east orlando around the university also boasts the highest crime rate in orlando — the university is has no entrance qualifications so a large number of kids drop out and sell drugs and fun stuff like that.

i live downtown and it is more diverse — but not exactly like anything you would be used to in maryland. there is a small vietnamese community and a growing mexican immigrant population to the south. orlando also boasts a large puerto rican community to the east — but not so far east as ucf. it is also quieter and traffic isnt as annoying as it is on the east side.

  8. QUESTION:

    • ANSWER:
I don’t know about these, I do know that I have “leashes” that I got from the baby section of the supermarket (Biggs in Ohio) and I attach a stretchy fabric with velcro on one end and a loop on the other to my child and I hold the looped end. I have them “attached” to me and I know where they are when we are out places that are very crowded. I get a lot of comments (good ones) about these and I get asked where I bought them.

SAFETY FIRST CAR SEATS REVIEWS

Author: Sonny Wemult

The first thing on becoming a parent is that you start worrying about the safety of your child. One of the most important responsibilities that you have to act upon is to choose a car seat for your little one that will be best equipped to keep your child comfortable and well secured.

While purchasing a baby car seat for your little one, you need to keep various issues in mind. Least of them is the issue of the cost which although has to be reasonable but should not stand in the way of getting the best for your child. You must always bear in mind the size of your child while purchasing the baby car seat. You must always therefore get a first hand view of the seat before purchasing it for your child.

Another important thing that should be considered is that the seat has to be comfortable as well as secure for your child. Whether the child is an infant or a toddler the right kind of seat needs to be selected. Generally all safety first car seats reviews are of the opinion that prefer the rear facing position is preferable for kids, however for kids aged more than one year old or weighing more than 40 pounds forward facing seats need to be used.

All safety first car seat reviews suggest that the car seats should not have too many complicated latches so that it can be easily opened at time of emergency. A 5 point harness is usually the most recommended one for use. The harness is extremely important for the safety of the child. This along with a soft and comfortable cushioning in and around the area of the headrest is absolutely necessary for a comfortable ride of the little one. The car seat should a buckle that should be easy to be unlatched by the adults but not by the children.

You also need to go for a car seat that is easily installed and adjustable. A car seat hat fits properly into your car will be the one that will eventually prove more comfortable for your precious one. A convertible car seat may be chosen for your infant. Such a type of arrangement will allow him to enjoy the same seat for a longer span of time.

An important feature that should be definitely considered while getting a car seat for your child is that it should have an air protection facility. This feature helps to reduce the amount of damage in case of accidents. These seats are designed in such a way that the risk of injury to your child will be minimized to a great extent.

Never ever buy a car seat that is not new. It may have been through accidents and will therefore not be suitable for the use of your child. In such circumstances a personalized research upon the kind of seat that will be the best for your little one is the best option. You might just end up with the perfect little car seat for your baby and be a happy parent.

  2. QUESTION:
Where should the baby safety car seat be located, middle or sides of the car, when facing front?

    • ANSWER:
The middle is safest by far… but having said that, you can put the baby in any position you wish so long as there is an anchor point to attach the seat to.

When i had one baby she went in the middle forward facing but on the side when rearfacing due to issues with the size of the car.

When i had two kids the baby was on the side the whole time as well as the older child who was also in a car seat still.

When i had three kids the newborn capsule went on the side as its hard to get it in the car when its in the middle, but when he went forward facing he went in the middle, with the two older ones in car seats on the sides

    • ANSWER:
Tip 1. Securing your child car safety seat Always install the seat tightly, using your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1″) of movement of the seat from side to side or forward. Each time you place your child in the car safety seat, give it a tug to make sure it is still secure

Tip 2. Using tether straps with forward-facing car seats
The tether strap for a forward-facing child car safety seat must be used. The tether strap is located on the rear of the child car safety seat and has a hook. The hook is designed to attach the strap to the tether anchorage on the vehicle as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Ensure the tether is only secured to the designated anchorage point(s) in the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.

Tip 3. Using Universal Anchorage System (UAS) / LATCH
All new Canadian vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2002 come with lower universal anchorage points. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual before using the UAS system/LATCH to determine where the anchorage points are located and ensure that the correct method is used as advised by the car seat manufacturer.

      Tip 5. Using harness slots
Your child car safety seat’s harness straps must be positioned correctly by ensuring they pass through the correct slots.

Rear-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or below the child’s shoulders.
Forward-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or above the child’s shoulders.

Tip 6. Securing your child in the harness
Ensure that the harness system is snug enough on your child’s chest to allow only one finger width between the strap and the child’s collarbone.

Tip 7. Positioning your harness straps
Ensure that harness straps lie flat and they do not twist or fold. Harnesses need to be straightened out each time the child is secured in the seat.

      Tip 8. Adjusting chest clips
Properly adjust the chest clips on the harness. They should lie flat against the chest and be positioned at armpit level.

Tip 9. Installing away from active air bags
Always install child car safety seats away from active air bags. The safest place is in the back seat of a passenger car, sport utility vehicle or light truck and either the second or third row in a mini-van.

Tip 10. Installing your rear-facing child car safety seat on a proper angle

Most child car safety seats have a recline position that must be used when in the rear-facing position for an infant (up to 9kg or 20lbs). Check your child car safety seat owner’s manual for instructions. For rear-facing seats, if necessary, use a tightly rolled towel or a foam bar (pool noodle) under the base of the child car safety seat to adjust the angle to 45 degrees. A forward-facing child car safety seat should be in the upright position. Make sure that when the seat is turned from rear-facing to forward-facing, the recline feature is adjusted to the upright position.

  8. QUESTION:
do NYC cabs have baby car seats?
We are planning on a trip to NYC. We’ll be travelling with a 15 month old. Our concern is safety for the baby in a car. presently we’re not planning on renting a car. We were thinking about taking a taxi from the airport to where we’ll be staying with family. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
From what I found, no. http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/passenger/faq_pass.shtml

      But, I did find this….

I have had good luck installing my “mini-car-seat” in American taxis. I think it is actually called a “Travel Vest.” I bought it brand new for about at Baby World on College Ave. It amounts to a rigid plastic board with a five-point restraint on it, which is belted into the car’s seat belt. It meets the federal safety standards and goes up to a 40-pound child. It installs in about three minutes–probably less the more you use it. It isn’t super comfortable, because it doesn’t have the nice reclined chair-shell that typical car seats have, but for a short ride while she is awake, my 18-month-old daughter is fine with it. Also, because it is very small, it can easily fit into a tote bag. Hope this helps. Meg

Baby Car Seats – Which One Does Your Child Need

Author: Craig Thornburrow

Baby car seats are very important to the safety of your child while he/she is travelling in a vehicle.  All newer car seats meet all the safety regulations that have been established nationally.  The correct installation and the correct seat can be the difference between injury and no injury should you become involved in a crash.  Many fire departments and police departments offer clinics to teach you how to correctly install your seats and to ensure that they are correctly installed.  All types of car seats should be installed in the backseat.  The front seat is deadly if your car has a passenger airbag.  There are several types of car seats available – infant car seats, convertible car seats, forward facing toddler seats, and booster seats.

Infant car seats are seats that are designed for infants usually from 5 pounds up to between 22 and 30 pounds (depending on the model).  These seats should always be rear facing as this is the safest position for your baby.  Many infant car seats have bases that latch into the vehicle which allows the actual seat to act as a carrier and to snap in and out of the base.  This will keep you from having to “install” the seat every time you get into the vehicle.  Your infant should remain in the rear facing position until he/she is one year old and 20 pounds.  Both criteria should be met before placing your child in a forward facing seat.

Convertible car seats are car seats that work in both the rear facing and forward facing positions.   This type of car seat is installed in the vehicle in a rear facing position fully reclined until the baby reaches one year and 20 pounds.  At that time, the car seat can be turned around and installed in a forward facing position.  These car seats have a five point harness (or a T-shield or a tray shield) and can be used for children up to age 4 and 40 pounds (some models allow for a heavier 4 year old and go up to 80 pounds).  Many models offer the ability to remove the 5 point harness and install the seat as a belt positioning booster seat.

A forward facing toddler seat is a car seat that is designed for children age 1 to age 4 ranging in weight from 20 pounds to 40 pounds or more depending on the model.  This is the next step in car seats after the infant car seat.  Many of these types of seats also convert into a booster seat.

Booster seats are designed to ensure the seatbelts in your vehicle fit your child.  The seats are for children from age 4 and 40 pounds.  There are high back and backless styles available.  Any toddler or convertible car seat is going to convert to a high back.  A backless style sits in the seat under the child and raises the child to the appropriate height for the belt. It is imperative that your child sits in a baby car seat, make sure you are using the right one.

  2. QUESTION:
where do you find reviews on the safety of car seats and other baby products?

    • ANSWER:
Hi! Here is a link to Consumer Reports Infant car seat products.. you don’t need to be a member for this part

      http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/baby-toddler/car-seats/infant-car-seat-ratings/ratings-overview.htm

For other baby products, I google the name of the product + safety test.

Also, check the reviews on Amazon, Target, Babies R Us… they aren’t “official” but they’ll give you a good idea about how the product functions and if other moms like it.

  4. QUESTION:
Where can I rent/hire a baby car seat in Madrid? Are there taxis that offer that service?

    • ANSWER:
Being an advid traveller, i prefer to bring my own, i then know what condition the car seat in. every time i rent one it never seems to be in great condition.
most airlines allow you to transport the car seat for free, and not counted as a piece of luggage

  5. QUESTION:
Hey moms and dads! Bumbo baby seat? Safety and usability question?
    Hi!

I was considering the Bumbo baby seat for our 3 month old to use as she will need it in the upcoming months. Reading about the item, it states its great for the baby to learn to sit and it supports them ergonomically. It also says that its great to use for young babies learning to eat solids, to feed them in. BUT it also says, not recommended to be used on a chair, table or any other hard surface. It specifically states for “floor use only”. What? How am I supposed to feed my baby on the floor?

This question is for all you out there that purchased a Bumbo. How do you use it and what do you think? I’m a bit confused on this conflicting information, and I want to be safe. Thanks all in advance!

    • ANSWER:
I loved my bumbo! So did my son, he loved to be up and looking at everything around him and I could sit on the floor and get work done while he would just sit and watch and play. As far as the feeding, I would either sit on the floor and feed him or I would use my regular high chair. Buy it, try it, if you don’t like it, return it!!

      Best of luck!

  8. QUESTION:
Baby Car Seat Safety – older vehicles? install teather latch?
I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van

I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada

    • ANSWER:
In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.

Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.

Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.
