Bringing up a child can be a nightmare in a less-than-hygienic world, but at what point does cleanliness and safety consciousness transcend the boundaries of sanity?

1. Toad stool :

Your child will definitely find this stool hilarious. You can put everything within reach for your little ones on this frog-theme stool. When your child steps or sits on the stool, it croaks. Teeth brushing time will become a little more fun when your child steps on this stool.

2. Potty Mitts :

Have a phobia that your children might catch diseases from unknown sources in public places? Water-resistant Potty Mitts are sure to change your life and your outlook.

In addition to keeping your kids free of germs, these revolutionary disposable gloves are small enough to fit into a handbag or diaper bag. A must for those visiting less-than-clean environs, but make sure you don’t flush them down the toilet; they’re not flush-able.

3. Poop Scoop Bag :

One for really hard-core greenies in keeping with current trends to cut down waste and keep in tune with natural rhythms. The idea is to monitor Baby’s bowel movements, and, instead of clothing them in diapers, let them do their thing whenever and wherever they please.

The trick is to always have your 100% bio-degradable ‘baby poop scoop’ bag at hand to ensure their waste doesn’t become the planet’s.

4. Monkey Bottle Hugger :

Monkey see, monkey do! Use this adorable baby’s bottle cover to keep the bottle contents at a constant temperature and prevent condensation. The expandable elastic mouthpiece fits all bottles and sip cups and keeps it from falling out of Baby’s mouth. The furry cover ensures that your child has an easy, comfortable grip at the same time.

5. Pee Pee Bottle:

An ingenious solution for those frequent tight moments when you’re nowhere near a toilet or natural spot, My Pee Pee bottle is as effective for adults as it is for children when it comes to needing a compact, portable space to relieve yourself.

Designed to replace public toilet seat covers, it is leak- and odour-proof and great if you’re on the move, but critics point out that, though it comes in pink and blue, its lack of transparency could detract from its functionality.

6. Baby knee pads:

Here’s an easy way to keep your baby happy while crawling. Your baby will never suffer from grazed, bruised, red and sore knees with these knee pads. There is no need to worry on which floor your baby is crawling inside or outside.

You can easily put the pads with the help of Velcro straps behind baby’s knees to keep them in place. The pads provide maximum protection without restricting the movement and circulation when your baby hits the knees against furniture.

7. Thudguard Helmet:

A UK-derived safety device to help cushion your toddler from banging their head too hard when they fall or collide, the Thudguard helmet may be taking safety too far.

While it looks cute and soft, one can’t help thinking that it conjures up images of astronauts and space bubbles and other unnatural climates where ultimate protection is required. Whatever happened to the learning experience gleaned from a good, solid graze?

8. Shampoo Hat:

A fun, feminine derivative of an adult shower cap, this frilly crown is an excellent way to keep soapsuds and shampoo out and your baby’s humor intact if she/he doesn’t like getting her/his head wet.

The foam ring has a hole in the middle which serves as a visor and ensures there are no more tears at bath time. Available in pink and blue as well as with cartoon motifs.

9. Baby Snot Sucker:

As clinically correct as the country which spawned it, this Swedish nasal device is possibly the snottiest invention you will ever come across. A cross between a tube and a straw, the Nosefrida is a bizarre way of ensuring Baby’s excess mucus does not choke or suffocate.

A long, flexible tube with a mouthpiece on the parent’s end and a nostril sucker on the baby’s end, the Nosefrida introduces a whole new concept to child care: nose to mouth resuscitation. Lest you are worried that you’ll ingest the baby’s snot, the developers have thought of everything.

An inline filter stops the snot from reaching your mouth, and you just have to wash it in the sink before using again.

10. Potty Song:

Remember Thomas the Tank Engine, a childhood ditty used by many parents to inspire their toddlers by repeating the lines & think I can, I know I can’t The times they have changed and the parents reckon they’ve got wiser.

The newly released Potty Song CD will encourage any kid want to change their diapers, and go to the loo all by themselves. A brilliant Pavlovian concept, the CD allows you to play your child a personalized song which rewards him/her for using the potty by saying their name over and over again. The attention your child receives makes him/her keep going back for more.

11. Babykeeper Basic:

A cross between a handbag and a carrycot, the Babykeeper Basic is the perfect antidote to keeping your baby out of harm’s way when you don’t have enough arms. It hangs comfortably from walls of most public restrooms and fitting rooms by means of two large metal hooks protected with safety webbing.

An added benefit of the patent-pending carrier chair, padded with non-slip material, is that it offers a safe, efficient way to keeping your child strapped up while you push the shopping trolley. Just don’t mistake it for your handbag!

12. Pee-Pee Teepee:

A discerning design from someone who has cottoned on to Baby’s unpredictable toilet behavior, this clever little triangular tent-like cover will shield you from A¢a‚¬A”sprinkling wee weeA¢a‚¬? while trying to change your baby’s nappy. Washable and waste-friendly, the wee-wee wigwam comes in three styles: cellophane, laundry bag and terry cloth. Wham bam, thank you Mom.

13. Bink Tees:

From day one, babies are friends of pacifiers. If your baby is no exception, you will love this new line of t-shirts suitable for little suckers. Your baby will love this bink tees and amuse themselves with binkies for hours putting them in, spitting them out, and crying to retrieve it again. When they throw it out, you wash it off and put back or give it to her and the whole routine starts again.

14. Billy Bob Pacifiers:

If your baby is one of those who share that traditional longing for two front teeth for Christmas, give him/her something to really smile about. Besides keeping everyone in the vicinity in stitches, these wacky Billy Bob Baby Pacifiers soothe Baby and makes you wonder whether s/he really does only have a sublime mouth full of teeth.

15. Baby Legs:

Your baby’s legs are being exposed to the chilly air because of gapiosis. Protect your little ones legs from wind burn and chill with these baby legs. Your baby’s soft knees are protected from harsh surfaces, bugs, and sun rays. Keeps legs warm, comfortable alternative to tights and allows barefoot walking.

16. Baby High Heels:

Reverse the age order and dress up your little lamb as mature mutton. Not that the intention is to make your child grow up before its time, but these booties with high heels will add a fun dimension to yours, and Baby’s life.

Designed by two childhood friends for a laugh, the soft, decorative heel adds a fun aspect to comfortable crib shoes. Aptly named Heelarious, the shoes cannot support any weight and are not intended to be anything other than comfortable, but zany, baby shoes in a range of trendy designs. Ignore them at your peril.

17. Baby Food Dispensing Spoon:

Feed your baby conveniently one bite at a time with Squirt baby food dispensing spoon. 3 ounces of baby food can be filled in the bulb and attached firmly to the spoon end. Get the right amount of food from bulb with a simple squeeze. Protective cover helps to seal the food and to keep the spoon clean.

18. Baby Mickey womb doll:

Think your newborn baby might be missing the warmth of your womb? Takara Tomy has come up with a melodic solution in the form of a doll to apparently recreate the primal sounds of in utero heartbeat and blood flow outside the womb. Issho ni Nenne Baby Mickey and Minnie Womb-sound dolls aim to ease babies into a relaxing sleep cycle, and provide them with a new friend at the same time.

19. Baby Bottom Fan:

Just when you thought they hadn’t thought of everything to make Baby’s upbringing as clinical and as humanly possible, a Freudian with a serious hygiene fetish got wind of the news.

Equipped with a built-in anti-microbial fragrance dispenser to protect your baby from skin ailments, the Baby Bottom Fan is the quintessential gizmo to keep your baby dry, and you busy, at every diaper change. Apparently eases sleep and irritation too, and comes with sponge fan blades to eliminate any possibility of danger.

20. Peter Potty Toddler Urinal:

Now you can potty train your toddler boy easily with this flushable toddler urinal. This toddler urinal provides your little guy standup experience 6 months faster. The low basin is easier to use, reducing mess.

After using it, your kid loves to push the flush button. No plumbing is required; you have to just fill the reservoir at sink.

Baby Travel Tips

Author: Trevor Ginn

Christmas is approachinga€¦The festive season often involves visiting relatives and hence the word a€œtravela€, which on itself is alright but put next to the word a€œbabya€, that can mean things get a tiny bit more complicateda€¦or certainly less practical. So here are a few tips and a tick list as to how to keep (you and) your baby relaxed when travelling without you requiring an extra pair of arms or a mule for the excess of baggage.

1st, transporting your baby:
If your baby is younger than 15 months, you might opt for a baby carrier: which maintains a bond between your little one and yourself. However past a certain weight, it is definitely preferable to use a buggy. Strollers are ideal for going on holidays as they are the lightest pushchairs available -so that’s especially good for public transport. If you’re mostly going to use a car, then a good idea is to go for a baby travel system which includes a detachable baby car seat to a pushchair base. For other baby car accessories, Hello Baby advises having a look at Sunshine Kids line of products -which are pretty functional.

Be prepared for all baby needs (critical point!)
So now that you can actually transport your baby, you obviously have to worry about how to keep him/ her happy. Without oversimplifying babies, I would sum up the problem in 4 words: food-potty-goodie-nap. So first, it is always helpful to have some of his favourite snacks and plenty of water or some milk at hand (perhaps involving a bottle insulator), together with some toys that particularly retain his attention and interest. As for the toiletry issue: of course nappies are not to be forgotten (in which case a baby changing mat could help) but from the age of 9-10 months, a travel potty is just *indispensable*. Nap time is important, so try not to go on too long a day out. Also different baby travel cots exist that are easily transportable and can provide your baby with a cosy place to sleep when on holidays.

Adapt your rhythm to your baby’s
If you’re going on a day out, remember that too many sounds and sights may be slightly overwhelming for your little toddler, hence it is good to adapt your rhythm to your kid’s.

Baby travel safety
When travelling it is good practice to always carry a first aid kit -or a few elements of it. And depending on where you are going to stay, it may be worth bringing a few drawer/ cupboard/ fridge locks: they are usually very light products -in which the Clippasafe brand specialises, lthough Prince Lionheart products are doing quite well too.

Find that bag to put everything ina€¦
And to find stuff (i.e. a light one with a few pockets and zips; some baby changing bags actually do the job quite well).

  3. QUESTION:
    Crawling baby…and 4 year old..any safety tips?
Obviously I have all the gates and plug covers, drawer and cupboard locks…but baby is only just 6 months and just started crawling in the last 2 days..her 4 year old sister is constantly leaving teeny tiny toys around the floor and of course the baby is going straight for them…I pick up all the time but now and then I see something I missed…today it was beads and some kids jewelry…I have explained a million times to my 4 year old what could happen if baby gets any small toys… I have given her special boxes and banned her from beading in the living room but while I am doing something else she is leaving comics which the baby grabs and chews and worries me sick! What can I do short of banning all toys from the living room…I dont want my eldest to feel like I am pushing her out.

    • ANSWER:
My opinion, with a baby life is going to change for everyone and I don’t think it’s bad (I don’t feel that you would be pushing her out) to set new boundaries. Your four year old needs to experience changes and she needs to learn how to deal with them and readjust. It’s just a life experience that we all need to learn, because it’s something we will all face. I think that you should talk to her and tell over and over again. Keep reminding her, even before she leaves the toys out. Tell her while she is playingthat when she is done she needs to put the toy/s away. Use positive reinforcement, when she does it, even if you have to tell her to put it away, make sure you let her know what a good girl she is and how much she helped mommy. Also if she does leave a toy out don’t pick it up yourself, bring her in the room to pick it up and put it away. And when you feel that this isn’t working then show her what happens to toys she doesn’t put away. Put something aside and tell her this is where toys go when she doesn’t put them away like mommy asks and tell her she won’t get them back until she proves that she can put her other toys away or she can get them back in a certain time frame. Good luck.

  4. QUESTION:

thanks you guys! & you sure can borrow my list. im greatful that i could help lol!
just thought of something i forgot.. changing pad and changing pad covers for in the babys room!!

    • ANSWER:
Wow! I don’t have many of those things and I have a 4 month old! Lol you did a good job :) Good luck, and may God bless you and help with your delivery!!!

One suggestion though, as far as clothes go, bring with you a newborn outfit to the hospital just in case. I didn’t have one and had to ask my sister to get one! my baby was much smaller than I had expected and all the 0-3month clothing was huge on her! My favorite brand of clothes is carters and miniwear and koala baby (both from babies r us). Also best brand for breastmilk storage bags is lansinoh.

  5. QUESTION:
How to babyproof narrow kitchen drawers?
They are about 3 inches in height, and I cannot possible screw in any latch. Besides emptying them out, I still wonder if there is any way to install some lock that will keep them closed and prevent pinching baby’s fingers. Are there any instruments for drilling in such narrow spaces?
Also, do you think it will be safer to keep chemicals in top kitchen drawers locked with safety latch ( but the child still can climb on the counter to get there) or in the top closet shelf which is about 5 feet high from the floor and with no climbing place around?
Thank you for sharing your ideas.

    • ANSWER:
if the handles are wide enough for you to actually put your fingers behind to pull the drawer out you can stick a mixing spoon in the handle and “lock” several drawers at once. I ran out of cabinet locks and did this for my pots and pans cabinet for months. I ran a spoon through the handles and just left it there.

put the chemicals in the top cabinet with a latch. My 2 year old would find a way to get in the closet and get them.

  6. QUESTION:
What do you do for a child who is just too smart?
My son is 13 months, and his is an evil genius. We put up a baby gate. Within a week he could get down. We put those baby locks on cupboard and drawers that you have to push down to open. He figured that out by the end of the day. And the velcro straps we put on the fridge? He managed to slide a broomhandle underneath and open it anyway! He knows how to pull out the electrical outlet covers, too. He even climbed onto the table! First he got onto the chair, then the table, and he was just sitting there, laughing, deviently. When I went to go grab him, he climbed down like a monkey. He knows how to undo his highchair.

I’m getting concerned. He has successfully defeated all safety measures I put up in my house. I mean, it’s great that he has such good motor skills, but what am i going to do? I’m getting very tired of picking up tupperware and towels, and finding those damn plug covers.

I try to engage him. Paint, blocks, books, outside, toy cars, educational DVDs ( I know, bad mommy) but as soon as I start doing something, like cooking, or folding clothes, or just going into another room to grab something, there he is, acting three times his age. What to do?
    I’ve told him no.
    He says Why?
I tell him why, he says no.
At which point I take him to his room, and he uses his dresser as stairs. So I put him in his crib. ANd he climbs out of it. After that, he’s usually good as gold for a few hours. Its like he’s testing me to see if I will say the same thing every time.
    yes, he does smirk evilly.

    • ANSWER:
My kids were the same way. The way I saw it was that the safety latches and covers were there as a reminder for them not to touch, not something that they couldn’t get through it they tried. You need to teach him that it is not okay to take the outlet covers off or climb on the table or take down the baby gate. Give him a stern, “no touch” command whenever he touches something that is off limits. Remove him from the area and give him something else to do/play with. Make sure you keep your eye on him so you catch him before he gets into stuff, and tell him no. Also, try not to leave him unattended until he knows not to touch those things. Have him sit in front of you when you are folding laundry and play with a few towels. Take him with you when you have to go to another room to get something. Put him in his high chair with a snack or a toy while you are cooking dinner. Talk to him and sing to him while you cook.

My 2yo could take off every door knob cover in the house, unlock the door and and be off into the wild world if he wanted too, but when he reaches up and sees the doorknob cover, it reminds him, “oh yeah, I’m not supposed to open that.”

      ETA:
@Charm…What about the cabinets with glass in them, or the drawers with knives, or the electrical sockets? You need to teach them that some things are off limits for their own safety. In my house we simply do not have enough high cabinets to put every single unsafe item out of reach. My kids know that even though they can get the latches open, they are not to do so.

We do not have latches on the cabinets with the Tupperware of pots and pans, btw, only the unsafe items.

      ETA:
It is simply not safe to have a child on the floor in the kitchen while you are cooking. What if you drop a knife, spill hot water, have a grease splatter? He needs to be in a high chair, for his safety, not as punishment.

How To Create Unique And Safe Baby Room For Your Child Safety?

Author: Neelima Reddy

After the arrival of new baby, it is very much exciting for the whole family. This is one of the most fun and joyful event in the family’s life.

After the arrival of your newborn there are some associated tasks and responsibilities that you need to learn for your child safety. Preparing a room for your child safety is also very much important out of all the tasks in the preparation of the baby’s arrival.

Parents often want to offer a best room for their child safety. Most of the couples would probably start planning of their child safety the moment they found that the wife is pregnant.

Some of the basic things that you need to do for your child safety:

So, you are now busy in preparing the things for your child safety. Preparing the baby room is one of the most important tasks that you need to consider with child safety.

You must need to know that what the basic things that provide child safety. You need to create a room that is worth living for your child.

You are confused with what things you have to buy and what things you have to install in your baby room? Here are the things you have to install in your baby’s room for your child safety.

The Mattress:

The mattress is a sleeping accessory worthy of scrutiny. The ideal mattress for your child safety should be perfect in size to fit snugly inside the crib. The mattress must fit tightly all round the crib for safety reasons.

If there is a space between the edges of the mattress and the side of the crib, there is a possibility for your child’s arms to get trapped in the space.

Hence, your baby could get suffocated if his or her head got caught. Therefore you have to purchase the mattress that fits tightly inside the crib and this gives perfect child safety.

The crib:

The crib is the most important thing that you should buy or create for your child safety. This is the basic thing where your baby sleeps. [Choosing Baby Cribs]

Your newborn will spend most of the time in his/her crib. So, the crib should be chosen and prepared meticulously that allows child safety.

Most of the mothers will get a question that is how to choose a crib that provides child safety environment?

a€¢ This is just a simple thing. You just remember one thing when choosing the baby’s crib, think child safety first. Child safety is highly recommended here.
a€¢ So, make sure that slats in the crib are no more than 2 to 3/8 inches apart. For your child safety, this is the standard measure for the crib’s slats.
a€¢ Check that you can manipulate the drop side easily with just one hand as there are some instances that you will need to hold your baby on your other arm.
a€¢ Ignore those cribs that feature corner posts that tend to extend above the rail. If you purchase this kind of crib, there is a possibility that the clothing of your baby may get hung on them especially when he starts moving on his own.

The Bumper Pad:

The bumper pad should also be taken into consideration as this also plays a very important role in your child safety. Basically it takes the role of protector.

It gives child safety by protecting your child from direct contact with the hard slats on the crib. Moreover, it can be a fun point to apply whatever decorating style you have got in mind.

However, it is vital to maintain the standard measure of the bumper pad in order for it to fully perform its role. The bumper pad must have at least six straps to grip it in place. The straps should be closed with snaps as this offers more child safety with those that are tied to the crib.

In addition, it is a constraint for the bumper pad to fit tightly around inside the crib. Similar to the mattress, the bumper pad should be fixed without leaving open spaces for the baby to bang head or block in between the side of the crib and the bumper.

You can purchase, or make your own bumper pad if you wish for your baby room. While choosing a bumper pad you have to consider the following things which give child safety:

a€¢ However, select a bumper pad that has its own fabric and firm foam.
a€¢ Select one that will coordinate with the pattern of your crib.
a€¢ By the way, discourage the use of the bumper pad when your baby is capable of reaching a standing position.
a€¢ Note that the pad can be his or her stepping stone to crawl out of the crib. So watch out for this purpose.

Swaddling blankets:

Swaddling is an effective child safety tip. Swaddling is the art of wrapping your baby with blankets to comfort and protect him or her from adverse temperatures. It gives child safety zone by avoiding sudden infant deaths.

Baby’s bath tub:

A bath tub in your baby room is another essential item for your child safety.

A small plastic child safety bath tub can provide a comfortable bath environment for your little one. Therefore, try to buy one that may fit the bathing needs of your baby.

Moreover, you can find a lot of both tubs and it’s up to you to decide which one you prefer for your child safety. Make sure that before using the tub it is completely clean. Be careful and never leave your baby alone in the bath tub. [Tips for Safe Infant Bath]

The changing table:

Changing table is not that much important for the baby room as the baby can be changed on any surface. It can be of great help to mothers and guardians. It can be a back saver for everybody as it places the baby at a comfortable height.

You can dress him or her, or change the diapers comfortably. It makes the clothing and diaper changes easier and faster. It also helps to keep everything handy and at your easy access.

While choosing a child safety changing table for your baby room, make sure that it has a comfortable restraining belt to keep your baby while you wipe and change his or her diaper.

Also, ensure that it should have a safety railing around the top and should be strong. Prior to using it, it is best to test it to make sure that it doesn’t bob.

And, at the time when you change your baby’s clothing or diaper, keep an eye at all times on your child. Never leave the baby alone on a changing table even for a split second.

A nightlight:

A nightlight is a requirement for a safe baby room. For safety don’t enter into your baby room at night to feed her not being able to see in the dark.

The nightlight offers you the possibility to see where and what you are stepping at so you don’t get bumped or tripped into things inside your baby room.

It is important, however, to ensure that the nightlight is out of your baby’s reach for your child safety. If you have placed it at floor level, that might attract crawling babies to sockets.

So, you have to avoid that and instead you can install a dimmer switch for the lighting fixture of the baby room. You can also use a lamp.

There are a lot of other requisites that your baby room needs to have. It may include the layette, a baby sling, books, baby clothes, and health care items for child safety.

But, other than these material things, every nursery needs caring adults, not just parents, who will be a part of the baby’s life.

How to decorate room for your child safety?

Finally you have got all the essential items for your baby room. The next thing to do now is to decorate the room for your child safety. Make the room like a heavenly place for your child safety.

To decorate a room, it needs careful planning, attention, time and effort. Hence, be ready to apply all of these when decorating your baby room.

Follow the below mentioned tips when decorating the nursery for your most precious one:

1. Think and plan for a child safety room that may last through childhood

Here you have to note only one main idea, that is, to think that your baby will grow old. With this idea, while planning for a baby room, you should not give the room too much of a baby feel.

The colors that you have chosen, like pink or blue might not great for grown ups, as it might seem like it is for babies. Therefore, maintain a color that might be great for both babies and preschoolers.

You have to choose furniture and wall treatments that can suit every age and gender. You can use accessories to give the room a baby feel, but don’t over do it.

It is also important to ensure that there is a comfortable place for a bed as this may be of great use once your baby grows out of the crib.

2. Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting

When decorating your baby room, it is best for you to choose either cork floor or area rugs on a wood.

If you use area rush rugs, they can be replaced easily than carpeting in case they get dirty and the cork or hard floors are easier to clean up. They don’t even hide allergy-annoying things like dust and dirt.

3. Watch out for the best lightning in the baby room

When it comes to lightning, a nightlight is not only the thing of focus here. A nightlight can help you from bumping and tripping on things inside the nursery every time you visit the baby room at night to feed your baby.

It is also necessary for you to take note of the light in the baby room in the daytime. You have to notice the angles of sunlight in your baby room at day time.

The idea here is, for your child safety, doesn’t place the crib in a spot where there is a direct sunlight in the morning. You also have to notice the place of the crib at night because there is the focus of streetlights at night time.

4. Adequate storage space is best

In your baby room, you probably need more storage space that you think. So, make a plan to build a room with enough space for you to store away baby’s accessories once the child gets older.

Adequate space allows your child to walk and crawl easily and gives child safety.

Your child will require bigger clothes, then shoes, and other accessories he needs for his age. As your child grows the number of toys may even increase. So you must expect that as your baby grows, his stuff grows too.

5. Create a room for you in the nursery

Possibly a time comes for every mother or father to spend a number of nights in the nursery with their baby. The situations may be rocking the baby to sleep or reading him or her stories later on.

So, it is important for every nursery to include a rocking chair or simply a comfortable chair where you and your child can spend some bonding hours.

How to turn your baby room into a child safety zone?

There are a lot of things that you can consider to make your baby room truly worth living for child safety. Just like you, your baby will also needs a room that is safe from whatever environmental harms.

Child safety is the main rule to consider. So, before transferring your baby from your room to his or her room, make sure that everything in place is safe.

Here are some tips to turn your baby room into a child safety zone:

a€¢ Make sure that the crib you have installed for your baby has a firm mattress and doesn’t include decorative patterns. Also watch out for corner posts.
a€¢ Check and make sure that the crib slats are narrow. Never ever leave any space for the head of your baby to get wedged between these slats.
a€¢ Ensure that the changing table has a preventive strap and three raised sides.
a€¢ Avoid the things like comforters, pillows and soft stuffed animals from the crib, because these things might suffocate your baby, especially when your baby is in between the age of 4-6 months old.
a€¢ Once your child started reaching for things, it is best to take down all decorations or toys you have placed in or strung across the crib, from rail to rail for your child safety.
a€¢ It is best for you not to buy a toy box that features a heavy hinged lid. There is a possibility that these things might fall on your baby especially when he reaches to obtain a toy.
a€¢ Use a soft rug for the floor. This will give child safety by preventing your child from injuries and pain from those unavoidable falls.

When planning for child safety room, it is best to have an idea on how to decorate the room, what are the needed things for your child safety and how to maintain a safe place for your baby.

This process involves a lot of effort and time to be invested. The best way to succeed is to be conscious of what you want and need to make the baby room a pleasing place to be comfortable and provides child safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
can baby go over crib railing?
my 6 month old can already pull himself up in a standing position in his crib. i’ve already taken off his bumpers so he won’t b able to use them as steps. lately i’ve notice him bouncing while holding on to the rails (which btw is already at neck level) would he be strong enough to pull himself over the rails? this has been scaring me for days. any other advice on crib safety for his age wld be most welcome. thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
If is only bouncing, not jumping, you’re ok for now. Besides the bumper, make sure you have removed all other toys from the crib. Mobiles, toys, stuffed animals and pillows all can be used to step on or pull themselves up. Also make sure you have the mattress set at the lowest level. The crib being a neck level seems a little high, but he may be tall for his age, since he is ahead of the game in standing and bouncing.

Once he begins jumping and climbing, then you would need to move him to another bed. If he’s under one when you move him, it may be best just to put the mattress on the floor the first few months as he gets used to it. That way if he gets active he’s only got a 4-6″ fall. Once he’s used to sleeping in a “big boy” bed, you can transition him to a toddler or regular bed with a guard rail.

      Hope this helps,

      Alan

  2. QUESTION:
I’m looking for a crib safety net, to keep baby from getting arms/legs stuck in rails. Any suggestions?
All I am able to find is the crib tents but I don’t want a tent just the inside net to keep my daughters hands and feet from poking through the crib rails. I saw it once before on target.com but am unable to locate it now. Need help finding something like this to protect her.

    • ANSWER:
Check out www.onestepahead.com . They have a nice line of “breathable bumpers.”

** after checking again the ones at www.onestepahead.com are the same as the ones from Toys r Us, made by BreathableBaby, but One Step Ahead has them in several different colors and TRU only has sage and pink. (same price both places)

  3. QUESTION:
    Baby safety on a balcony…??
We recently moved into a condo on the second floor. The balcony has rails that are wide and unsafe for our 7 month old who is learning to crawl. We would never let him out by himself but, we still want it to be safe. Someone suggested getting chicken fence and putting it up w/ twist ties… Any other suggestions? Whats safe that he won’t be able to crawl up onto or pull down or even bite on and hurt himself?

    • ANSWER:
Go to onestepahead.com. The have all sorts of products that may be able to help you. They carry deck guards and other items. It is listed under the safety heading.

  4. QUESTION:
Is there a safety risk in elevating my baby’s mattress?
I am a mom of a 3 week old baby. The last few days, she has not been wanting to sleep flat on her back. She sleeps fine in her swing and her crib but she’s really fussy at night when she’s on her back. Also, during the day when she’s napping or just laying on her back, she cries until I pick her up. Is there a safety risk in elevating her crib mattress? The springboard allows for the mattress to be elevated quite easily without any chance of it slipping or falling. I’m just wondering if there’s a risk of her suffocating or smacking her head against the side rails. Thank you so much!
    PS – She is breastfed.

    • ANSWER:
No there isn’t my twins were in the NICU for over a month and that’s how they kept them in the incubators… They said it was better for them since they were preemies and could barely let go of thier gas…. It’s better for their breathing and for acid and such… If it’s good for the hospital… It should be ok to do… just don’t over do it.

  5. QUESTION:
will you be buying a Toddler bed for your baby?
we have a cot/crib and a normal sized single bed.
I think our son should be able to go from cot straight to the big bed (with a rail for safety) when he’s older.
but i see on yahoo a lot of mums use toddler beds????

    • ANSWER:

  6. QUESTION:
I’m 13 and I want to take a VIA rail train from Montreal to Kingston can someone assure my safety?
My parents are worried about me being stolen off the train because they think I’m still a baby. Is there someone (stewardess ETC) that could make sure I have a safe travel?

    • ANSWER:
      The short answer is, no.

That being said, nothing is a sure thing, and I am afraid that you have gotten yourself into an issue that pure statistics will not settle.

Your parents are undoubtedly aware that there are some crazies out in the world, and no amount of data on train safety is going to sway them from that position.

The only way I can see you making that train trip is if they are assured that someone they trust will be there along with you the whole way, willing to be responsible for your safe passage.

Maybe if you could scare up some relative or even arrange for you to travel with a “buddy”, I think many of their fears could be allayed.

Good luck – train travel is “the bomb” (figuratively speaking, of course).

  7. QUESTION:
Can my 11 week old baby travel in a stroller?
I am making a long journey down to visit family this week and have just been informed by the rail company that my pram cannot go on the train! I cannot carry my son in a carrier as I have a bad back so am thinking about buying a cheap stroller/pushchair just for this trip. They all say 6 months and up, is this vital to his safety? He can’t sit up on his own yet but can hold his head up. Please advise!

    • ANSWER:
Most of the travel strollers you are talking about do not have 5 point harnesses (waist, crotch, over shoulders) and that makes them a bit more dangerous for younger babies. That is why the 6 months and up warning. I have seen them, though and some of them even recline back a little. Most of these, even though they do recline a little, are definitely more upright and meant for children who can sit, even if supported. I would be leery about doing this with a baby so young. Maybe contact the rail company and explain the situation. I am sure they have run across this before. Good luck and safe journey!

  8. QUESTION:
    Drop rail safety on crib?
My 9.5 mth old has just started standing in his crib. He has one of those cribs with the drop down rail on the side for easy access of putting baby in and out. The only problem is that when he tries to pull up sometimes one side comes unhooked and drops a bit, if he were to get to the other side and do the same thing, he could have it drop low enough for him to fall out if he were to stand up.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Also the mattress is as low as it will go, and there is no way to lock the crib rail in place. Should I contact the manufacturer?

    • ANSWER:
Yes you should DEFINITELY contact the manufacturer TODAY. Your baby could take a dangerous spill. You should also go to consumerreports.org to see if there has already been a recall on your crib.
In the meantime, keep your baby in a pack n’ play.

Toys And Babies

The mind’s eye can never really picture a baby without a toy. Babies respond instinctively to their surroundings and toys become important as they stimulate the baby’s brain, thereby arousing interest and inquisitiveness. Moreover, the young age is when an individual learns the most and also the fastest. Everything around a baby is new to him/ her and yet within a few months, they grow an inherent awareness that helps them distinguish between objects, touches, sounds and colors. Therefore it is essential that kids be provided with the right kind of toys that will aid their learning processes.

In infancy, babies have a blurred vision, and cannot focus clearly on things at a distance. So their first memories are invariably associated with color. Red, white and black are among the first colors they can observe and distinguish between. An infant should therefore be given a lot of soft toys in bright colors. Rattles, wind chimes, cot toys, or brightly colored mobiles are also exciting for a kid as the noise and shape attracts them and engages their curiosity.

At a slightly older age, educational toys like wooden blocks of various colors and shapes teach children about colors, shapes and sizes. These toys teach a child interactive and interpretive skills at a very basic level. Cognitive skills also start getting developed when variations of these toys are given, for example, when a child has to sort the blocks according to color, or drop them in boxes depending on the size or shape.

Games like puzzles, jigsaws, beads, construction toys help promote the reasoning and analytical abilities in a child. Books with alphabets, numericals, or pictures are also great learning toys for children. They can observe the different objects in nature and relate them to the information in the books. This is probably one of the fastest learning processes in a child. Often there are books which allow a child to listen to the sounds made by animals, or even get a feel of their furs and hence distinguish one from the other.

Different furniture around the room can also be a learning toy for the child. For example, a baby will quickly observe and learn that meals are to be had at the dining table, while the sofas are places where one lounges. Similarly, the bath tub is a fascinating place for a toddler as he/ she subconsciously reacts to the interplay between the body and the water, and the ripples caused by the movements.

Child psychologists and researchers have established the deep connection between the child’s overall development and the learning toys and there is a constant effort to create unique learning toys that will enhance and nurture the development in babies.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What are the toxic-free brands of baby toys? Are brands such as Safety First and The First Years safe?
Are these brands free of pthalates? My baby is 7 months old and she needs some toys to stimulate her. Any suggestions. Safe toys, of course.

    • ANSWER:
No, most of the toys you will find at regular commercial toy stores do contain pthalates. The FDA and other regulatory agencies do now acknowledge any dangers in pthalates, parabens, dioxins, SLS, sodium polyacrylate, etc., so the manufacturers don’t see a need to change to more expensive materials. If you want non-toxic toys, shop at natural baby stores. Some good online stores are:

      www.cottonbabies.com
      www.wilddill.com
      www.melissaanddoug.com

  2. QUESTION:
What are all the safety symbols for baby toys? cud u send me a link of the symbols. and what do they mean?
I need this for my child deveopment coursework, and cant find it anywear :|

    • ANSWER:
      Here is one list http://www.askbaby.com/toy-safety.htm
I am not sure how standardized that one is.

Here is a US/EU “official” list

  3. QUESTION:
How can I get parts for my Safety 1st baby toy?
The tractor that plays nursery rhyme songs and sits on top of the circular, Farm -themed, two-leveled baby seat and play center that was manufatured about three years ago stopped playing when my granddaughter threw up on it and I washed it under running water. My husband replaced the batteries, but it still won’t work.

    • ANSWER:
go to baby r rus a baby store full of baby stuff i go there.

  4. QUESTION:
Will you buy your baby toys from Mattel? After all they waited months to recall 21 million toys that harm kids
    read this.. http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20070912/ap_on_go_co/toy_safety

I have a problem with a company that gives US jobs away to a communist country that treats it’s emplyees like shi_. And then when it is brought to their attention that the toys that are made there can cause serious harm to US kids doesn’t do anything about it for months. All for the bottom line! That is sick!

How funny it is now how they beg us for their business. Will you buy Mattel toys for your children?

    • ANSWER:
I own a toy store and we don’t deal with Mattel, so the answer is no.

There are some brands we carry that are made in China, however. We have Thomas trains, some of which were recalled. But the manufacturer reacted quickly to recall them.

It’s tough to be a small manufacturer of toys these days. You can either have the toys made in the US or other country with ethical practices and raise the price. Or roll the dice with china and have low prices.

The real problem is that most consumers will do anything to save money on their kids’ toys.

It’s ironic that they won’t spend ten dollars more for a safe toy for their kid, but will spend tens of thousands of dollars extra to buy a monster truck to tote the kids around in.

  5. QUESTION:
What are the best baby toys for a 6month old? That can entertain her for more then 10min.?
I have two older children, that have a wide range of toys. Any type of chew type of toy. That lights up & plays instrumental would be nice.

She just wants to chew everything. And lover of lights & music.
I dont have any toy or know of any toys, with these 3 types of specifications.
    Also, Safety 1st -unbreakable material.

    • ANSWER:
My son loves his light show we bought him.. If we lie him down and put the light show on, he will just lay and watch it for over 15 mins and sometimes even falls asleep to it. It plays nursery rhymes too.

Here’s a link to the one my son has, I find it really useful as it also distracts him long enough for me to go and get a shower etc.

  6. QUESTION:
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes?
from garage sales and second hand stores. It’s our first baby, and I know she’s just trying to help us since we don’t have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i’ll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them.

I’d like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!

I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused” :(

    Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!

    • ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

  7. QUESTION:
What kind of toys would you like for your baby? (Green Moms)?
I have a small business decorating and selling baby clothes, bibs and blankets. I am looking to expand into toys and decorations. My products are green materials that are all hand made and focus on the baby’s health and safety. I made toy blocks and those sold well but, I’m looking for some green moms to tell me what they would like to buy/be willing to buy from a handmade store. Any and all advice would help.

I do fairly well with just the clothes but I personally don’t have children so I need help with expansion.

    • ANSWER:
why dont you recycle clothing and make dolls and teddies out of them? im my experience with handmade stuff, the quirkier they are the better they sell. classic childrens toys are big right now too, like skittles, skipping ropes, hopscotch mats etc..

  8. QUESTION:
    Raid bomb baby safety?
Is it safe to set off a raid flea bomb in the house when we are gone if we have a 7 month old baby? She crawls on the floor…would the “fog” set in her toys and in the carpets and whatnot? I am worried about her chewing on something that may have some sort of residue.

    • ANSWER:
the insecticides that are used in foggers have no residual, just a contact kill then is broken down exposed to the air , along with the amount of insecticide in the fogger, probably .5% or less, will make the makeup actually less toxin than a number of fast foods you may eat. Keep the toys 6 feet from the fogger due to they sometimes “burp” splatting oily residue on things

Where to Buy Baby Toys On ...

Baby Toys – Parents Guide

By Jenny Talorman

A mother or father must provide a toy or a plaything to their baby. This guide was made to aid parents in making choices for toys and to help your friends in purchasing the most suitable toy for the baby.

Baby toys are the baby’s 1st best friend. Yet, what type of toy will you be giving to your baby? There are a lot of toys to pick from. Prior to scanning store isles while buying toys for the baby, keep in mind to purchase toys which can’t be broken easily. A broken toy or doll could be dangerous as the parts will allow the baby to imagine that its food and may attempt to swallow it. This isn’t very good if he should swallow something from a broken toy or doll.

Month 0 to 1

The infant possesses senses that are limited and toys that offer stimulation could be helpful. The baby possesses vision that is extremely limited, so toys that have strong contrasting movement and colours are appropriate. A cot mobile brightens up the room and offers stimulation. Plain activity gyms on the floor additionally offer stimulation. Rattles always are accepted by babies.

Month 1 to 3

The baby is developing quickly and will begin to lift his or her head and discover that his or her world is different! Some play mats and activity gyms offer reaching shapes that baby could begin to “hit”. Rattles that are connected to some foot socks are additionally good for kicks on the mat. This kind of toy encourages the hand to eye coordination development and motor skills. The utilization of some texture is vital and toys that have several sounds and materials are loved.

Month 3 to 6

This includes an exciting period as the baby will become more curious about his or her environment and his or her mouth! The baby will enjoy picking up tiny toys and turning them over in his or her hand

  3. QUESTION:
pregnant needs baby ideas. ladies?! please help!?
I am 5 months pregnant and I am going crazy getting things ready for the baby. The baby was not planned but we are still excited for its arrival. The problem is that I am so stressed out that I don’t even know what I need!

My husband made me a list of what I need but it does not seem like much. This is what is on his list:
    sippie cups
    utensils
    plates
    formula
    diapers
    clothes
    toys
    crib
    diaper bag
    mobile
    monitor
    bottles
    highchair
    safety gates
    pacifiers
    Am I missing anything?

How much do baby supplies cost all together? I just moved in a new house with my husband about 8 months ago and I am worried I might have trouble getting enough money for the baby.

Any suggestions would be great. Thanks.

    • ANSWER:
sippie cups – not till about 9 mos old
utensils- ? You will need some little spoons after the babies a few months old
Plates- for whom, adults eat from plates
Formula – only if you don’t breastfeed, which I highly recommend. It’s economical, it’s healthier, you lose the weight faster, etc. etc.
      Diapers
Clothes- just onesies, jammies and socks are necessities
toys- not many for a newborn, you can pick them up slowly and second hand toys many times have almost no wear
crib-get it second hand from craigslist or classifieds
Diaper bag- any large shoulder bag will do
Mobile – fun to have but definitely not a necessity
Monitor- nice to have but definitely not a necessity (get it second hand)
Bottles- only a couple if you breast feed
Highchair- not until the baby can sit up
Safety gates- not until the baby is mobile at five or six months
Pacifiers- maybe, if baby doesn’t suck his/her thumb
Am I missing anything-yes first I’ll list necessities then I’ll list the things that are just nice to have.
      **car seat
*infant tub- if you’re not a pro it’s difficult to bathe a newborn without one, I like the one that fits in the kitchen sink.
*blankets, about six receiving blankets and at least two regular baby blankets depending on your climate.
*burping cloths or substitute a pkg. of cloth diapers
*you’ll need several sets of comfy pajama type clothing, babies dirty they’re clothing often so how many changes of clothing you have will decide how often you are washing clothes
*2 sheets for whatever bed the baby sleeps in
*Toiletries such as diaper cream, baby wash/shampoo (I love the lavender one), baby powder, baby lotion

Things that are nice to have
*portable crib/bassinette- I like the one that’s an all in one portable crib/bassinette and changing table, You can set it up in your room for when the baby’s a new born and everything will be at your fingertips in the middle of the night.
      * Carrying sling or pack
      * One set of hand covers
      * Stroller, possibly one that works with your infant car seat
*waterproof cloth mats, to lay under them so that you don’t have to change their sheets as often

I’m sure I can think of other helpful things, I have six children you are more than welcome to email me. Also remember, many very nice things are available second hand at a tremendous savings.
      Congratulations!

  4. QUESTION:
Extremely tight budget–what baby items MUST I buy new?
DH and I were NOT intending to get pregnant right now, since money is extremely tight, but that’s life, eh? Anyway, I have a lavish (ha!) budget of 0.00 over the next six months to buy baby supplies.

My inlaws offered to buy a new carseat with all the current safety features. I can get a lightly used crib that complies with current safety recommmendations from a friend for free. I can sew well and am more than willing to make sleepers, receiving blankets and the like, if I can’t get hand-me-downs.

Would love to know what other low-budget mothers have done for baby supplies. What are the ABSOLUTE essentials? Is there anything, other than a carseat, that MUST be purchased new?

I have no problems at all with second hand stuff, as long as it’s safe and serviceable, and I don’t care in the least about logos, brand-names, or matchy-matchy baby stuff.

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations on your pregnancy, even if it was a surprise! New babies need very little beyond your love and care, so 0 is plenty. We’re told that our babies need a lot of stuff, but most of it isn’t necessary at all.

Plan on breastfeeding – that will save you at least 00 over your baby’s first year of life (more if your baby needs hypoallergenic formula, and if you factor in increased laundry and health care costs when formula feeding). Most women are able to breastfeed with no challenges. It’s a great idea to call your local La Leche League while you’re pregnant, so you can learn about the normal course of breastfeeding and have resources for help if needed (and it’s free!).

When your baby gets a bit older, consider making your own baby foods. Much cheaper and healthier for baby. You can probably find a book at your local library with ideas for home-made baby foods.

Consider cloth diapering. You can buy used prefold diapers and good-quality wraps which will last you throughout your baby’s diaper-wearing days. You can make your own baby wipes with baby wash cloths (or sew your own). There are lots of ideas at cloth diapering sites for saving money on diapering. You don’t necessarily need a changing table; you can put a pad down on baby’s crib and use that, or get a changing pad that fits on the top of a dresser. And instead of a diaper bag, you can use a regular backpack or a tote bag.

Don’t spend too much on baby clothing. Your baby will grow fast and won’t need much at first. Check out thrift stores for almost-new baby clothes, or ask for hand-me-downs.

The one item I used every day was my sling. We almost never used a stroller (and used it to carry the diaper bag more often than the baby), but the sling was so useful. And a baby in a sling doesn’t need a bouncy chair or a swing – mom’s body is a much nicer place for baby to be.

  5. QUESTION:
    Baby and Parent Questions?
    1. What are 15 products you need for a child? (from a few months old to 3 years old)

    2. What are 10 safety precautions that should be done in order to child proof your home?

    3. What qualities make an effective parent? If you were to have a baby right now would you be an effective parent? (don’t think about the money and supplies needed to raise your child)

    • ANSWER:
Sounds like a homework question to me…

  6. QUESTION:
    Am I missing anything?
I’m nine weeks pregnant, and I already went shopping for baby stuff, in yellow because I don’t know the sex. Is there anything you can think of that I could be missing? I’m not going to shop for clothes until I know the sex, though.

    What I have bought:
    Size 1 Pampers
Cherry wood crib that forms into a daybed, then toddler bed
    Mattress
6 – 5 oz. baby bottles and extra nipples
    Stage one toys and movies
    Baby books
    Infant car seat
    Stroller
    Changing Station
    Baby hangers
    Dresser
    High Chair
    Bouncer
    Crib sheets and blankets
    Reciving Blankets
    Nursery Decor
    Stuffed animals
    Infant swing
    Bibs
    Burp-up Towels
    Bottle scrub brush
    Einstein Play Gym
    Baby Moniter
    Breast Pump and supplies
    Safety gates
    Safety Cabinet locks
    Electric socket covers
    Doctor suggested Medicines
    Bathing Materials
    Grooming Materials
    Baby bath seat
    Glider
Okay so I need a Bumbo seat, a Jumperoo, Newborn diapers, bigger bottles, a Boppy, a CD player and classical music and bible bedtime stories! Anything else?
    Oh, Vaseline! Great idea!
I am planning to breastfeed, but I have to have bottles for when I go out to feed it with pumped breast milk.

    • ANSWER:
There’s a good chance you won’t need newborn size diapers, they will give you some in the hospital and there’s a good chance that by the time you are through those your wee one will be in size 1.
You will want a baby thermometer, a nasal aspirator, and infant acetaminophen (Tylenol). Those are things you will want to have on hand. I needed mine the week after I brought my little one home.

I would wait though, there’s a good chance you will get many of those things as gifts.

There are some things on your list that you won’t need:

Baby hangers – trust me, you won’t use them longer then a few days.
Stuffed animals – they are a hazard in cribs and your baby won’t even notice them until they are much older

Some of the things you will not need until MUCH later (play gym, toys and movies, safety gates, cabinet locks, outlet covers, bath seat, Bumbo (we have one that we didn’t even use, I would wait to get that until you feel you NEED it, many babies won’t even use one), high chair), but if you have the space to store it then it can’t hurt.

I am not trying to bring you down or anything, but just trying to give you a realistic idea of what you need (and don’t need).

      Good luck :)

  7. QUESTION:
Can someone with legal experience regarding the new Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act answer this?
I am a Work-At-Home-Mom. I make custom baby carriers and sell them. Each of my carriers is one-of-a-kind. I buy my fabric from nationally trusted retailers such as JoAnn Fabrics, etc. I do not buy loads of fabric since I make them on an order-by-order basis (so I can customize for my buyer). How is the CPSIA going to affect me in particular? I am not the one importing the fabric or thread. Shouldn’t my supplies be tested before I buy them? Also, even if they are tested, I usually only buy fabric remnants instead of whole reels. It would be ridiculous for me to ask for certificates for 1 yard of fabric. I feel like this whole thing is going to put me, and a whole bunch of others like me, out of business. How can I possibly afford to have each and every one of my baby carriers tested for lead?

    BACKGROUND INFO:
Congress passed a law in August 2008 called the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act (CPSIA). This law came about because of the numerous recalls of children’s toys in the past two years and specifically the issue of lead in the toys. While I applaud the attempt at making children’s products safer, the law as stands, will actually remove many of the products that we have turned to in place of those made in China.

As of February 10th, 2009, ALL children’s products sold in the United States will need to be certified to be lead free and many products will need additional testing. To be certified, the final product sold needs to have each component on it tested for lead. This sounds wonderful when you think of all of the “Made in China” children’s products that are out there and all of the children’s items that are mass produced (mostly imported). HOWEVER, think of the handcrafted items sold within the US. Think of any children’s item that is a ready made item that has been personalized with a child’s name (it would need to be retested because it is the final sold product that needs to be certified). Think of the children’s items that are sold at craft shows, garage sales, ebay, consignment shops and fundraisers. As of February 10th, it will be illegal to sell any children’s products without certification, no matter when it was produced. Collectible vintage toys and trains? A “banned substance”. You will not be able to donate items for charity because they are a “banned substance” since they are not certified. This applies not only to toys, but all products such as books, shoes, clothing, school supplies, sporting equipment, jewelry, etc. that are possibly intended for children 12 and under.

    • ANSWER:
Write to your congress person and your states senators. Ask them to sponsor a bill exempting domestic craft products from testing provided that the components are lead free.

Then contact everyone you know and know of involved in making and selling domestic craft products and ask them to do the same thing.

If enough people write enough members of congress corrective action will be taken.

      Hope this helps

Guide to Baby Toy Safety

Author: Trevor Ginn

A few simple Top Tips will keep baby safe and provide confidence to Mum & Dad that baby’s toys are safe.

These days’ manufacturers must work to very rigorous requirements and regulations to ensure that child’s toys are safe. Gone are the days of toxic paint and other materials which can cause harm.
Toys are also graded by age with small parts being excluded from baby products.

There are, however, still dangers but these can be easily managed by parents if they are aware of the risks:
Always take great care with heirloom toys which could have toxic paint or metal pins. Eyes and other parts may be removable. It is best to keep such toys out of sight and unused.

Check each toy for damage, sharp edges and any loose parts. Try the good tug test to verify that all parts are secure.

Never give a child under 4 years old any item which could cause choking. As a guide, consider any object which could fit into a 35mm film container as a potential choking hazard. Marbles, magnets, lipstick tops, pen tops are all attractive to children but can be deadly.

Ensure that toys, e.g. balls, are not left around so as to present a tripping hazard for parents. To this end, try to encourage baby to play with one toy at a time. Withdrawing and re-introducing toys can be fun for baby.

These basic tips will provide a safer environment for baby but remember that close supervision is always needed as, for instance, children can insert objects into their ears and up their noses and pencils can be dangerous if put into mouth and the child trips.

Frequently Asked Questions

    • ANSWER:

Some good online stores are:

      www.wilddill.com
      www.melissaanddoug.com

  3. QUESTION:

  4. QUESTION:
What is the toy brand for a popular baby around the Northern Europe region?
    I have the baby now.

I am looking for the educational toy and the toy for the baby.

Could you give the popular brand and the commodity around the Northern Europe region?

When the evaluation of the design, safety, and the function of the region is high, I very often hear it.

    • ANSWER:
      Educational Toys Planet

  7. QUESTION:
For people who already have had a baby :] Do I have everything I need?
My baby boy is due in May, here’s a list of what I have so far, am I missing anything?

.Clothes (onsies, sleepers, socks, mittens, sweaters, pants, hats, soft shoes)
    .Blankets, bath towels, wash cloths
.Baby products (oil, wipes, lotion, soap, powder, cream, q tips etc.)
    .Carseat
    .Stroller
    .Diaper bag (already packed :])
    .Crib (sheets, mobile, positioner…)
    .Changing table
    .Bouncer
    .Swing
    .Jumper
    .Car mirror and shades
.Baby safety set (nail clippers, thermometer, baby medicine…)
    .Baby book and photo albums
    .Bassinet
    .Baby bathtub
    .Toy chest (full of toys)
    .Bottles and breast pump

Things I haven’t bought yet and are pretty sure I am going to are:
    .High chair
    .Gates for his playroom
    .Pillow for breastfeeding
.Contents for overnight bag for the hospital, I have the bag with a few things in it…but not everything yet.

Am I forgetting anything? I thinks that’s everything..

    Thanks :]
Oh yeah the baby carrier, I almost forgot! Thanks :]

    • ANSWER:
I agree with everything Arlene G said. It sounds like you have pretty much everything covered for the baby so don’t forget about yourself. This is coming from experience because no one even told me to take any of those things for myself. My poor husband was always having to run to the store for extra things.

I would suggest bringing something to keep all the paperwork in. You will have lots and it’s so easy to just put them in one place so you aren’t worried about losing or forgetting them.

Also have some healthy snacks for when the baby comes home because I know I wasn’t able to eat for more than 5 mins at a time :) . Escpecially because she had colic.

You might want to get some baby gas drops just in case.

And this is a personal choice but I now have a wrap for the baby and wish I had looked into them sooner so maybe you could check out those. But other than that it seems as if you are all set. Congratulations!

  8. QUESTION:
Does anyone have the Baby Walker (Dinosaur themed) by Safety 1st?
If so, I just wanted to know how to change the batteries out of the little purple dinosaur toy that is attached to it. Thanks a lot!

    • ANSWER:

      http://www.safety1st.com/docs/productsheet/588_9-25-2006_25610.pdf

Didnt see too much about batteries but they have a toll free number and a website on there

My assumption is that the toys may have individual batteries built into them. They may not be big batteries, perhaps smaller ones (watch battery size) i would check out the detachable toys and see if they have a place where you can unscrew them. If not you can probably take a flat butter knife and pop off the bottom on the dinosaur

Walker For Babies – Safe Baby Walker Alternatives and Critical Information

Author: Will Morrison

Research shows that about 80% to 90% of parents use a walker for babies. They have been used since the 1800′s there is some debate about whether or not they help babies walk faster. One thing is for sure, using them is a easy way for parents to let babies entertain themselves.

Many of the accidents associated with baby walkers are from falling down stairs. Canada even banned them because of this.

However, since Canada’s ban, manufacturers are using better safety guidelines and the number of accidents annually have decreased significantly.

Despite increased safety of traditional walkers, many parents are looking for baby walker alternatives. There are a couple of options available; stationary activity centers and parent assisted walkers are the most popular.

Stationary Centers

These activity centers do not move so there isn’t any danger of falling down stairs. They have toys and activities placed around them as well as snack trays and cup holders.

Most have the baby placed in the center of the station but some have a walker attachment that is tethered to the station; allowing the baby to walk around the station to get to the toys.

Parent-Assisted Baby Walkers

These are basically a harness that holds the baby, but without a base or wheels. There are straps that the parents hold between them while baby walks along.

There aren’t any toys or anything but the baby can focus on walking and the parents can get involved. Additionally, the baby’s muscles develop faster because they have to do more work.

  6. QUESTION:
What is the best baby gate for top of stairs?
I just bought the Safety 1st Perfect fit, it’s wall mounted on top of my stairs and I don’t trust it. Also every time you open it you have to readjust it loosing its one hand open feature. Please share your experience.
    Thank you!
@barfly: So I should teach my 9m old (and walking) not to fall down the stairs and yet make sure the cabinets are locked? Sorry, a gate is a must. Anybody with kids have any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
I have Dreambaby gates and love them. They’re metal and come in black or white. I have the standard size at the top of the stairs, and the extra-tall ones blocking access to the bottom of the stairs in the hallway. It takes a while to mount them properly, but the instructions are good and they’re strudy once mounted. They also swing closed automatically in both directions, though the click in kind of loud so I usually close them gently by hand. I ordered them online. They were more expensive than many gates, but totally worth it. You can open the gate easily with one hand.

You need to measure the space exactly, then buy any extensions you may need. The bottom and top of the space may be slightly different widths if you have a baseboard, but the mounting cups can screw out to different lengths. The more they’re screwed out, the less secure it is (thus the importance of getting extensions, if needed, rather than screwing out the mounting cups to the maximum). I wouldn’t trust any gate enough to lean against it at the top of the stairs, but ours has held firm every time we’ve bumped into it by accident, and it’s steady when my 13 month old daughter tries to shake the bars.

  7. QUESTION:
Please help! Am I being unreasonable about baby safety?
Hi, im 22 and i first time mum to be living in Germany, and my question is: do you think its unreasonable to disallow your newborn child into a house that is not baby safe?

My husbands parents are kind of expecting to be able to have the baby for afternoons in their own house (rather then coming down to our granny flat down stairs to see the baby). However at the present point i am really concerned about the lack of general health and safety in their house, its a hayfever haven! There are hundreds of bottles of chemicals just lying around the place, even in areas where they prepare food. Not to mention the dangerous objects laying around the baby could get hold of, the dirty cat food bowls that sit around for weeks before being washed, the cartons of fresh milk that sit out all day in the warm, the cat hair that is never vacuumed from the sofa, dust sits everywhere in the lounge room; my hands burn just from touching their laundry or bathroom from the amount of chemicals used in them. And their cooking standards (ie not mixing raw meats ETC.) still shock me!

Don’t get me wrong, im no way an uptight, ritualistic, clean freak, and i realize that people from different countries do things different (I’m originally from Australia), BUT i do expect a little bit cleanliness around the house and chemicals (if one must use them) at least put away in a safe place if there is a baby around.

And I dont want to stop my husbands parents from having the baby, but the health and safety of the house makes me really anxious, and would rather not unnecessarily expose the baby to chemicals.

I was a nanny for quite a while before i was pregnant so im not completely naive as his parents like to think i am, but im really afraid to say something. Maybe im over reacting completely…? Either way none of the houses i worked in as a nanny, or my mother own house ever operated like this one. Should i say something?

Any opinions on this would be really appreciated. Many thanks and im sorry this got so long! :o )

    • ANSWER:
Momma knows best. That saying exists for a reason. From what you described I wouldn’t let a child of any age over there. It doesn’t sound safe.
Maybe just tell them you’d like for them to come visit you and your child but also be upfront as to why you aren’t comfortable in their home. A simple “we just don’t feel comfortable having the baby there because of allergies and so many chemicals being exposed and around.” If all else fails, push it off on the doctor and say that the doctor said that the baby needs to stay in their own environment due to allergies. Who is going to argue with you if you tell them “the doctor said”.

If confronting it head on isn’t something you feel you can handle then offer to come over WITHOUT the baby and help them kid proof their home and explain that you aren’t comfortable with your child being in a home that isn’t child proofed for safety issues that they probably don’t realize with a young baby/child and could you come to help them child proof.

  8. QUESTION:
At what age…? Baby safety questions – Help!?
Do you quit letting your child use the pacifier?

Do you switch to a toddler bed?
From a toddler bed to a traditional bed?

Do you allow your child a pillow?

    Do you quit covering outlets?

Do you quit using baby monitors when they are asleep?

Do you quit using baby gates around stairs?

I’m curious as to what your family has done – or what the experts say.
    Thanks!
Do you quit letting your child use the pacifier?
My oldest quit at 18 months – but he was an easy child (and I was pregnant w/brother and didn’t want any confusion over what was a baby item and what wasn’t) – My youngest is 2 and still has it at nap/night, but never any other time. I’d like to break him of it, but it is hard (both boys sleep in the same room – space issue)

Do you switch to a toddler bed?
Oldest @ 2.5 so baby brother could have the crib. Youngest, at around 20 months – was ready…

From a toddler bed to a traditional bed?
    When we have the finances/space…

Do you allow your child a pillow?
When they start to sleep in a toddler bed!

    Do you quit covering outlets?
We still have ours covered. Our oldest is 4, and still attempts to mess with them occasionally…

Do you quit using baby monitors when they are asleep?
We still use them – hubby is dependent…

Do you quit using baby gates around stairs?
We still use it (ages 4 & 2)…
Thanks to everybody who answered. I wanted to get peoples opinions on when some of these safety measures aren’t needed anymore.

I do strongly agree that the BIGGEST factors in determining whether a particular safety feature is needed or not is family situations and child’s personalities. Because there is no right/wrong answer on this – I am going to have a tough time picking best!

    Once again, thank you :-)

    • ANSWER:
Pacifier ends at age 1 for my daughter-Its a pet peeve of mine seeing toddlers running around with pacis.

My Crib’s safety suggestions suggest switching from the Crib to the Toddler bed at 15 months. Then at 50 lbs it suggests switching it to the regular bed.

A baby under the age of 1 for sure does not need a pillow-I would say when switching the Crib to a Toddler bed, then add a pillow.

Baby monitors aren’t really needed unless you are planning on being on the opposite side of the house a lot.

Best Baby Closet Organizer Styles

Are you looking to buy a baby closet organizer?  This item is inevitable and it helps you keep baby’s room attractive and neat always.  Perhaps you have a small closet, but your baby has many clothes and supplies. Keeping this kind of a closet smart is absolutely challenging. To avoid it, buy special organizers made specifically to fit above the closet bar and extends to the floor. These are okay because they supply shelves and drawers just below the hanging bar. As a result, you could hang your child’s clothing above using hangers.

Hangers are perfect organizers because you can simply suspend them on the closet rods. The cubbies or shelves just beneath the bar differ a lot. Some have extra space for keeping baby footwear, toys, and other accessories. If your baby is little and your budget is low, try these special organizers. As your child grows, he or she will require extra clothes and accessories. For that reason, you have to plan to buy a bigger closet later on or to discard some items as your baby outgrows them.

If you are ready to spend extra bucks, buy a closet not necessarily made to support baby needs. This will most likely have two bars for hanging clothes and underneath, it will feature shelves and cubes for storing baby accessories. You will require additional hangers for use in this baby closet organizer. The two hanging bars only have a capacity to hold many clothes, such as dresses, pants, sweaters, jackets and so on. This closet is relatively bulky compared to one described above. All the same, it is more reliable, as it could help parents manage all baby stuff in one place.

In fact, your child may not need any other closet through out his or her childhood and teenage years. If you require this style, a customized style could suit your needs better. You will simply get an organizational system that complements your kids’ needs. If you decide to stick to a small baby closet organizer, consider buying other storage options, such as baskets or suitcases. You could use them to store fashion clothes and accessories that your baby cannot wear any longer. Shelves or drawers require proper management, and all you require are dividers. These will help you make use of the available space intelligently.

Use dividers to create space for baby booties, bibs, hats, vests, toiletries, diapers, nightwear, and so on. Doing it would make your job as a mom easier as you can always tell where you have kept a given item. Without doubt, you will find a baby closet organizer very essential every time he or she is wet. You can change a baby conveniently if you know where in the closet to find clean clothes and diapers.  Clutter could cause many problems to babies, as they cannot get the attention they need quickly. If you have a new baby coming, start considering buying a closet and organizer. These do not only bring order, but also proper care and storage of clothing.
