How to Calm a Crying Baby

Why do babies cry? Well, it is a fact of life that all babies, no matter how peaceful or angelic, cry. For new parents especially this may be reallng rise to all type of emotions;|For perents who have never had a child before this can be very stressful} inadequacy, fear, despair, worry, stress and even hatred and anger. , to irritate you or because it is playing up., some times it may come accross this way. Your baby simply needs to tell you something – because you baby cant talk this is the only way to communicate.

A normal, healthy baby will usually cry for one of the following reasons: hungry, too hot, too cold, wet/dirty nappy (diaper) or tired. The most common cry is for feeding, normally a waaah, waaah that increases in volume and distress and can only be quietened by food. It is very easy to confuse this cry with the one for tiredness or overtiredness and quite often a mother will resort to feeding rather than getting the baby to sleep, which only increases you baby’s anguish. If a correct feeding routine has been established then you can normally tell between the two; also check for things like rooting, where the baby curls it’s tongue searching for food – this is a sure sign of hunger. When a baby is tired they will thrash their head and rub their eyes.

Then check for heat or cold – a simple touch to your baby is enough to tell you or use a nursery thermometer.

If your baby is crying for any of these reasons then the cause is simply remedied. If they are crying for other reasons, especially teething, then there are other things that you can do that will help calm them. A gentle, rhythmic pat on the back at the same time recalls the sound of their mother’s heart beat. Both of these things will quiet your baby quickly and without much fuss – if you need an extra boost, gently blow on your baby’s neck; this will calm both of you. Remember, if your baby has awoken, the less stimulus they get, the better, so this is an ideal way of easing them back to sleep.

White noise is said to resemble the body sounds heard in the womb and again, is a comfort for a distressed child. The towel will have picked up your scent and will reassure your baby that you are near – this does work, I used it on both of my children.

So when your baby cries the best thing to do is think before reacting. Take a step back and see if you can understand what they are telling you, rather than jumping in with food or a nappy. Most times you can stop your baby crying before it reaches a crescendo. However, all babies are different; some will cry for no obvious reason and you will not be able to stop them. If you find yourself becoming tense with a crying child put them down somewhere safe (like the cot) and step away from them until you are calmer. Better that you let them cry for a few minutes whilst you regain your cool.

Crying is part and parcel of parenthood and all babies differ in the degree of crying and how quickly they will calm.

Your not alone all perents have to handle these frustrations of a crying baby and often thought it was a fault of the perents makeing. With the birth of my second child I found I was more confident with listening to my baby and understanding what he wanted.

Sleep Patterns – How to Help Your Baby Sleep Well

If you baby is not napping well during her first few months of life, you may want to try to cut back on the time she is awake by 15 minute increments.  If she is getting over stimulated, then she will fight sleep and be difficult to get to nap.  The way to prevent this is to watch her “sleepy” cues to make sure that you put her down when she is beginning to get sleepy.

Some parents believe that letting their child cry will harm him or her.  Fifteen or twenty minutes of crying will not harm your child physically or mentally.  Babies will learn to self-soothe and fall asleep by themselves, but only if you let her.  It is very important that babies learn to fall asleep by themselves so that they can self-soothe if they awake in the middle of the night.  Otherwise, you may have a child that will not sleep through the night for years.

Regular sleep patterns are intermeshed with regular eating patterns, so let us look at the stages of a baby’s life:

  • Newborn:  Your newborn will sleep anywhere from 16 to 20 hours a day, including the naps that he takes between feedings.  When your baby has been fed, let him stay awake for a short while and then put him down before he becomes over stimulated.
  • Two months:  At two months and older, your child should be allowed to try to self-soothe during their naptimes and bedtime.  Crying is normal when you put your baby down, but it is okay.  If he cries for longer than 10-15 minutes, then go in and check on him.  Don’t get him up, but pat his bottom or lightly rub his back until he calms down.
  • 3-6 months:  At around 3-6 months, your baby will stop taking one of his naps.  Usually it is the third nap or late afternoon nap that they do not need as much.  He may be a little fussy and may want to take a little nap, but you need to try to keep him up if you want him to go to bed at a decent time and sleep soundly through the night.
  • 16+ months:  When your child is between 16-20 months, they usually quit taking the morning nap in favor of a longer nap in the afternoons.  Babies this age usually sleep between 10-12 hours a night and take a 2-3 hour afternoon nap.

Ground Rules about Naps

1. You decide when the nap starts and ends, not the baby.

2. When your baby is older than 4 months old, she will wake up crying if she hasn’t slept enough.  She might have a dirty diaper, be in a position that is not comfortable, or cold/hot. Fix the problem and encourage her to go back to sleep.  Babies that have enough rest wake up happy, talking, and in a good mood.

Graco Baby Monitors Reviews

Graco Baby Monitors have become very popular to parents nowadays. This is because the digital baby monitor by this manufacturer comes with an exclusive vibrating feature. It vibrates whenever the baby calls for the parents.

Imagine this: the parent can be anywhere in the house doing chores and then he or she will be notified whenever the child needs him or her. This is the very purpose of Graco Baby Monitors.

The vibration alert is 100% digital and it senses the movements of the baby in the room. It can also provide the parent with the clarity and the range that most parents are looking for in baby monitors.

The Graco Baby Monitors allow the parents to keep an eye on their babies every time, thanks to the monitor.

The baby monitor reaches up to 600 feet. The parents can easily watch their babies from across their room.

The 1.9 inch digital color screens are also big enough for the parents to see their babies. But then there are also some compact and small screens that are very portable which the parents can take anywhere.

The Graco Baby Monitors come with swivel cameras that have rechargeable batteries and an indicator light whenever the batteries have to be changed.

Parents need not worry about not seeing their babies in the dark because the night camera can provide the baby and the parent two things.

For the baby, the night camera has a light that can lull the baby to sleep and as for the parent, the night light allows the parents to see whatever is going on in the room even when the lights are turned off.

Parents who want to check up on their babies without turning the lights on can use the features of the Graco Baby Monitors that allow them to do so.

Other features of Graco Baby Monitors include the digital zoom that lets the parent see the baby up close. The power saving screen is used to prolong the batteries.

It may be rechargeable but if the batteries are often charged, these might affect the longevity of the entire thing. At least with rechargeable batteries, time and money of the parents can be saved.

Parents love the portability of the Graco Baby Monitors. The handle allows them to carry this from one room to another.

The belt clip makes it easy for them to just put the transmission radio to anywhere in their wardrobe and check up on their baby from time to time.

How To Get Your Baby to Sleep

As adults we all have our nightly routines to help us sleep. Some of us enjoy a long, hot soak in the tub, others read before going to sleep, have a cup of cocoa and a snack or spend time enjoying a hobby. It’s routine and it tells our bodies to prepare for sleep. Your baby can also benefit from a nightly routine. Just as your routine sends silent signals to your body so will an established routine for your baby.

Keep It Simple

The first thing to keep in mind when preparing a nighttime routine for your little one is to keep it simple. If it gets too long and drug out then it can have the opposite effect of what you want.

Bath time for Baby

Warm baths help everyone relax and a baby is no different. Incorporating a nightly bath into your baby’s evening schedule is not only relaxing but a fun way to spend time with him. There are herbal baby baths that you can purchase that induce sleep and relaxation.

Snuggle Time Together

After you bath the baby and he has been fed then make it snuggle time. A rocker is perfect for this. You might read a book to your baby before cuddling him in a soft blanket. No baby is to young to be read to by mom or dad. If you plan on rocking the baby to sleep make sure he is sound asleep before laying him down. Playing soft music while rocking your baby can help create a quiet sleep atmosphere as well. You might want to consider having soft lullaby music playing in the baby’s room for when he is put into bed.

Give Your Baby a Massage

Massages are so relaxing and gentle massage techniques can work on your baby too. Research some basic massage methods for infants and then practice on your little one. Gentle is the key here. He may object at first but you may find it’s both yours and his favorite time of evening.

Keep At It

Once you have decided on a good routine for you and your baby stick with it. It can take a week or more before you can determine what needs changed. Routine and structure is wonderful for babies and establishing a nightly routine can make your baby’s bedtime less hassle and more pleasant for both of you.
