Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Any idea where i can buy cheap baby safety fire guard ?
Now with a crawling curious 9 month old, my fire place is a huge problem, any idea where sells cheap fireguards without having to go to mothercare ?

    • ANSWER:
If you are in the U.K, you may have heard of SureStart. If you join, their is a programme they run and you can get a stair gate a smoke alarm and a carbon monoxide detector all for £1 each. Good luck

  2. QUESTION:
Can i put my 6 month baby in a jr bed with an extra safety guard?
    please help

    • ANSWER:
Im sure that you could but from having a 7 month old I wouldn’t because it doesn’t seem as safe as the crib and what if the baby rolled and somehow got stuck and suffocated?

  3. QUESTION:
Does anyone know where to find a nice looking, aesthetically pleasing, child safety fire guard?
We have a really nice open cast iron fireplace but our little one is just starting to crawl and will soon be walking too, so we need to stop her crawling into the fire… there are loads of baby/child fire guards on sale in the UK but MAN are they all ugly! They are just cages – it makes your house look like a prison. The best one we’ve seen is from Mothercare that has a curve to it, but the actual bars are still cage-like.

Whereas with the normal (non child safety) fire guards / spark cages, there are hundreds of really attractive looking ones, with nice meshes, wiggly-bars, stained glass screens etc. But these don’t attach to the wall – the baby would just pull them over on top of her…

Are there any baby safe fire guards out there that look like normal ‘pretty’ fire guards?

    Thanks

    Ross

    • ANSWER:
It is really difficult to find something different from the ‘cage-like’ ones. I found one which is a plain mesh, it’s in the sources. Hope it helps. :)

  4. QUESTION:
I still don’t have a solution for baby proofing my windows?
So, I have been off and on thinking of a baby proof solution for my windows. I have a bit of time, maybe a few months before I really have to get serious about it. We live on the second story of a duplex.

They have screens but screens are not sufficient in safety. And we MUST have them open in the summer because we have no AC and it gets hot here.

We do not want to use the burglar bars on them. We feel they are a fire hazard because we only have one door going in and out of the house, if we are to block the windows with bars we could become trapped in an emergency.

I have not been able to find anything that will work.

We have several large and tall windows that are only about 1 1/2 to 2 feet off the floor. The largest ones span about 5-6 feet wide. The largest ones are in the living room. The smaller ones we are going to use the baby window guards. But they will not work on the ones that are about 6 feet wide. The windows are also very tall, we have vaulted ceilings and they go up to the top of the ceiling.

The windows have no ledges or ridge of any kind that I can use a baby gate in them and the baby proofing window guard is not long enough… They are close enough to the ground that when he is walking (which will be soon) he could reach them with no problem.

I thought about using mesh but will that hold well? How will I keep it on there? My son is a bruiser and very strong… If I were to try to put some mesh over the window I am certain he could rip them out.

I have heard about kids being killed falling out of windows and I just worry that they could be a hazzard.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than burglar bars? And I would use gates if I had a place to put them in to over the wondow but there is no ledge…

    Any ideas? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
Http://onestepahead.com has a plexiglass type guard that is meant for stair railings so kids cannot fall through. What if you put some of that across the bottom 2 feet or so of the big windows? You could put it up a few inches so you could crack the window. Look for the “no climb deck guard”.

  5. QUESTION:
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes?
from garage sales and second hand stores. It’s our first baby, and I know she’s just trying to help us since we don’t have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i’ll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them.

I’d like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!

I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused” :(

    Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!

    • ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

  6. QUESTION:
    Baby proofing the home?
What lenghts have you moms gone to when baby proofing the home?
I have the main things like a fire guard and covers for plug sockets, baby is not old enough to need safety gates yet but the little fingers are getting everywhere! She is getting super fast in her walker. My kitchen is a no go area!

    • ANSWER:
Watch out for any sharp corners or edges, like the corners of furniture or tables. Make sure all drawers and cupboards have safety catches so that they can only be opened by an adult. My house is pretty minimalistic right now, no ornemants or breakables anywhere. If you don`t want it touched, chewed, slobbered on or put down the toilet, then put it away for a couple of years! I keep any medicines and sharp knives in top cupboards just to be sure. Put stair gates up well before you think you will need them, or one day you will find out your little one can do much more than you think! It also helps get you in to the habit of closing them every time you go through, even when the kids are in bed. Its just a good habit to have because then you will do it automatically and never forget. Watch out for choking dangers, never leave anything small within reach. I had to get rid of a lot of my older sons smaller toys when my daughter came along. I put them in the bin because I thought if they are not in the house then there is no chance something will be given to her by accident by her brother. Never let them play with remotes (even though they love them) as the batteries may fall out and be chewed / swallowed. Be aware of places they could get their fingers stuck in, for example don`t let them poke their little fingers down the plug hole in the bath, my daughter loves to try that one – but they may not come out. Get a bath seat from 6 months to stop them jumping about and slipping in the bath. My daughter likes to put her fingers in the hole where the washing machine door latches to, so I have to make sure it is always closed. Obviously don´t leave hot drinks in little arms reach, and have a stairgate on the kitchen door so that when you are cooking anything the children are kept out of the kitchen. If you have pets never leave the pet & child together unattended, even though they may be lovely, they may not appreciate having their eyes poked out and ears pulled! As they get older watch out for places they can climb up onto and possibly fall down. My 12 months old climbs on the coffee table and walks across it, but does not realise she can not just walk straight off it! I think it will end up in the garage for a few months now! Sorry if this one sounds a bit obvious, but I have to say it due to something that happened to me. Never assume that a 5 point harness can keep a child into a high chair, even if it is done up as tight as possible. I put my daughter in the high chair to keep her away from the oven while I checked the dinner, assuming that there was no way she could get out. I was in the next room for no more than 60 seconds, and when I came back in she was sitting happily on the TRAY of the high chair. We have a hard tiled floor, and had she fallen I dread to think what would have happened. She was only 10 months old then. Luckily I managed to get to her in time. One more thing, also from experience – put wedges in doors to keep them open or closed when your child is crawling. It stops them from trapping their fingers, but also, my son took his thumb nail completely off by pushing a door over one of his hands, using his other hand. Also, keep the toilet seat down at all times – unless you want them splashing about in the water! Remove any toilet brushes, they are attracted to them too. Apart from that you`re fine lol
Don`t worry they grow up quickly!

  7. QUESTION:
    Buying child home safety equipment..?
I need to now start buying safety equipment for my home, like stair gates, plug socket protectors, fire guards etc.. which are all quite expensive. I was wondering if there is any help towards getting these as im a single parent on a very low income.

i was made redundant whilst on maternity leave and my husband died before baby was born. i have had the sure start maternity grant but the £500 was spent on a cot, clothes, nappies, pram etc..

if anyone knows of any schemes out there to help provide these will be great… else its walking around those charity shops in hope to find something..
*reply to proud* do you have children? if so you should understand that all these things add up.. a stair gate may only be £30 but you need 2 for top and bottom of the stairs.. fire guard..another £30+.. then u need plug, door and corner protectors, cabinet locks for under sinks etc.. all adds up. you may be fortunate enough to say it doesnt cost alot.. but having to save up for all these things means that only my baby eats that week

    • ANSWER:
In my area there is a project that’s council run and founded (I live in quite a deprived area), they actually contacted me and came to fit cupboard catches and stair gate etc. So if I were you I’d phone your local council and ask them as they provide these services in deprived areas because of the high infant mortality and accident rates.

Oh or failing that you could join Freecycle on yahoo groups and ask for free safety equipment or look out for it.

      Good luck.

  8. QUESTION:
this is for all women to read if you have a baby or not!?
Body: I guess it is the season………….for safety reminders.
Here’s the first for the season. Let’s all be careful out there!

    NEW FORM OF KIDNAPPING

Please take a minute to read this. This is very scary and
could happen to any of us.. Seems like every nice thing people do for one another can be perverted. A new twist on kidnapping from a very smart survivor:

About a month ago there was a woman standing by the mall
entrance passing out flyers to all the women going in. The woman had written the flyer herself to tell about an experience she had, so that she might warn other women. The previous day, this woman had finished shopping, went out to her car and discovered that she had a flat. She got the jack out of the trunk and began to change the flat. A nice man dressed in a business suit and carrying a briefcase walked up to her and said, “I noticed you’re changing a flat tire. Would you like me to take care of it for you?” The woman was Grateful for his offer and accepted his help.

They chatted amiably while the man changed the flat, and then put the flat tire and the jack in the trunk, shut it and dusted his
    hands off.

The woman thanked him profusely, and as she was about to get in her car, the man told her that he left his car around on the
other side of the mall, and asked if she would mind giving him a lift to his car. She was a little surprised and she asked him why his car was on other side. He explained that he had seen an old friend in the mall that he hadn’t seen for some time and they had a bite to eat, visited for a while, and he got turned around in the mall and left through the wrong exit, and now he was running late.. The woman hated to tell him “no” because he had just rescued her from having to change her flat tire all by herself, but she felt uneasy. (Trust that gut feeling!)
Then she remembered seeing the man put his briefcase in her trunk before shutting it and before he asked her for a ride to his car.

She told him that she’d be happy to drive him around to his car, But she just remembered one last thing she needed to buy.
    (Smart woman!!)

She said she would only be a few minutes; he could sit down in her car and wait for her; she would be as quick as she could be. She hurried into the mall, and told a security guard what had
happened, the guard came out to her car with her, but the man had left. They opened the trunk, took out his locked briefcase and took it down to the police station.
The police opened it (ostensibly to look for ID so they could
return it to the man). What they found was rope, duct tape, and knives. When the police checked her “flat” tire, there was
nothing wrong with it; the air had simply been let out. It was obvious what the man’s intention was, and obvious that he had carefully thought it out in advance. The woman was blessed to have escaped harm. (Amen? Thank you, God!)

How much worse it would have been if she had children with her and had them wait in the car while the man fixed the tire, or if she had a baby strapped into a car seat? Or if she’d gone against her judgment and given him a lift?

I’d like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life.

A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. I was
going to send this to the ladies only; but guys, if you love your
mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it on to them, as well.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that The world we live in has a lot of crazies in it. Better to be safe than sorry.

PLEASE BE SAFE AND NOT SORRY!!
JUST A WARNING TO ALWAYS BE ALERT AND USE YOUR HEAD!!!

How To Create Unique And Safe Baby Room For Your Child Safety?

Author: Neelima Reddy

After the arrival of new baby, it is very much exciting for the whole family. This is one of the most fun and joyful event in the family’s life.

After the arrival of your newborn there are some associated tasks and responsibilities that you need to learn for your child safety. Preparing a room for your child safety is also very much important out of all the tasks in the preparation of the baby’s arrival.

Parents often want to offer a best room for their child safety. Most of the couples would probably start planning of their child safety the moment they found that the wife is pregnant.

Some of the basic things that you need to do for your child safety:

So, you are now busy in preparing the things for your child safety. Preparing the baby room is one of the most important tasks that you need to consider with child safety.

You must need to know that what the basic things that provide child safety. You need to create a room that is worth living for your child.

You are confused with what things you have to buy and what things you have to install in your baby room? Here are the things you have to install in your baby’s room for your child safety.

The Mattress:

The mattress is a sleeping accessory worthy of scrutiny. The ideal mattress for your child safety should be perfect in size to fit snugly inside the crib. The mattress must fit tightly all round the crib for safety reasons.

If there is a space between the edges of the mattress and the side of the crib, there is a possibility for your child’s arms to get trapped in the space.

Hence, your baby could get suffocated if his or her head got caught. Therefore you have to purchase the mattress that fits tightly inside the crib and this gives perfect child safety.

The crib:

The crib is the most important thing that you should buy or create for your child safety. This is the basic thing where your baby sleeps. [Choosing Baby Cribs]

Your newborn will spend most of the time in his/her crib. So, the crib should be chosen and prepared meticulously that allows child safety.

Most of the mothers will get a question that is how to choose a crib that provides child safety environment?

a€¢ This is just a simple thing. You just remember one thing when choosing the baby’s crib, think child safety first. Child safety is highly recommended here.
a€¢ So, make sure that slats in the crib are no more than 2 to 3/8 inches apart. For your child safety, this is the standard measure for the crib’s slats.
a€¢ Check that you can manipulate the drop side easily with just one hand as there are some instances that you will need to hold your baby on your other arm.
a€¢ Ignore those cribs that feature corner posts that tend to extend above the rail. If you purchase this kind of crib, there is a possibility that the clothing of your baby may get hung on them especially when he starts moving on his own.

The Bumper Pad:

The bumper pad should also be taken into consideration as this also plays a very important role in your child safety. Basically it takes the role of protector.

It gives child safety by protecting your child from direct contact with the hard slats on the crib. Moreover, it can be a fun point to apply whatever decorating style you have got in mind.

However, it is vital to maintain the standard measure of the bumper pad in order for it to fully perform its role. The bumper pad must have at least six straps to grip it in place. The straps should be closed with snaps as this offers more child safety with those that are tied to the crib.

In addition, it is a constraint for the bumper pad to fit tightly around inside the crib. Similar to the mattress, the bumper pad should be fixed without leaving open spaces for the baby to bang head or block in between the side of the crib and the bumper.

You can purchase, or make your own bumper pad if you wish for your baby room. While choosing a bumper pad you have to consider the following things which give child safety:

a€¢ However, select a bumper pad that has its own fabric and firm foam.
a€¢ Select one that will coordinate with the pattern of your crib.
a€¢ By the way, discourage the use of the bumper pad when your baby is capable of reaching a standing position.
a€¢ Note that the pad can be his or her stepping stone to crawl out of the crib. So watch out for this purpose.

Swaddling blankets:

Swaddling is an effective child safety tip. Swaddling is the art of wrapping your baby with blankets to comfort and protect him or her from adverse temperatures. It gives child safety zone by avoiding sudden infant deaths.

Baby’s bath tub:

A bath tub in your baby room is another essential item for your child safety.

A small plastic child safety bath tub can provide a comfortable bath environment for your little one. Therefore, try to buy one that may fit the bathing needs of your baby.

Moreover, you can find a lot of both tubs and it’s up to you to decide which one you prefer for your child safety. Make sure that before using the tub it is completely clean. Be careful and never leave your baby alone in the bath tub. [Tips for Safe Infant Bath]

The changing table:

Changing table is not that much important for the baby room as the baby can be changed on any surface. It can be of great help to mothers and guardians. It can be a back saver for everybody as it places the baby at a comfortable height.

You can dress him or her, or change the diapers comfortably. It makes the clothing and diaper changes easier and faster. It also helps to keep everything handy and at your easy access.

While choosing a child safety changing table for your baby room, make sure that it has a comfortable restraining belt to keep your baby while you wipe and change his or her diaper.

Also, ensure that it should have a safety railing around the top and should be strong. Prior to using it, it is best to test it to make sure that it doesn’t bob.

And, at the time when you change your baby’s clothing or diaper, keep an eye at all times on your child. Never leave the baby alone on a changing table even for a split second.

A nightlight:

A nightlight is a requirement for a safe baby room. For safety don’t enter into your baby room at night to feed her not being able to see in the dark.

The nightlight offers you the possibility to see where and what you are stepping at so you don’t get bumped or tripped into things inside your baby room.

It is important, however, to ensure that the nightlight is out of your baby’s reach for your child safety. If you have placed it at floor level, that might attract crawling babies to sockets.

So, you have to avoid that and instead you can install a dimmer switch for the lighting fixture of the baby room. You can also use a lamp.

There are a lot of other requisites that your baby room needs to have. It may include the layette, a baby sling, books, baby clothes, and health care items for child safety.

But, other than these material things, every nursery needs caring adults, not just parents, who will be a part of the baby’s life.

How to decorate room for your child safety?

Finally you have got all the essential items for your baby room. The next thing to do now is to decorate the room for your child safety. Make the room like a heavenly place for your child safety.

To decorate a room, it needs careful planning, attention, time and effort. Hence, be ready to apply all of these when decorating your baby room.

Follow the below mentioned tips when decorating the nursery for your most precious one:

1. Think and plan for a child safety room that may last through childhood

Here you have to note only one main idea, that is, to think that your baby will grow old. With this idea, while planning for a baby room, you should not give the room too much of a baby feel.

The colors that you have chosen, like pink or blue might not great for grown ups, as it might seem like it is for babies. Therefore, maintain a color that might be great for both babies and preschoolers.

You have to choose furniture and wall treatments that can suit every age and gender. You can use accessories to give the room a baby feel, but don’t over do it.

It is also important to ensure that there is a comfortable place for a bed as this may be of great use once your baby grows out of the crib.

2. Avoid wall-to-wall carpeting

When decorating your baby room, it is best for you to choose either cork floor or area rugs on a wood.

If you use area rush rugs, they can be replaced easily than carpeting in case they get dirty and the cork or hard floors are easier to clean up. They don’t even hide allergy-annoying things like dust and dirt.

3. Watch out for the best lightning in the baby room

When it comes to lightning, a nightlight is not only the thing of focus here. A nightlight can help you from bumping and tripping on things inside the nursery every time you visit the baby room at night to feed your baby.

It is also necessary for you to take note of the light in the baby room in the daytime. You have to notice the angles of sunlight in your baby room at day time.

The idea here is, for your child safety, doesn’t place the crib in a spot where there is a direct sunlight in the morning. You also have to notice the place of the crib at night because there is the focus of streetlights at night time.

4. Adequate storage space is best

In your baby room, you probably need more storage space that you think. So, make a plan to build a room with enough space for you to store away baby’s accessories once the child gets older.

Adequate space allows your child to walk and crawl easily and gives child safety.

Your child will require bigger clothes, then shoes, and other accessories he needs for his age. As your child grows the number of toys may even increase. So you must expect that as your baby grows, his stuff grows too.

5. Create a room for you in the nursery

Possibly a time comes for every mother or father to spend a number of nights in the nursery with their baby. The situations may be rocking the baby to sleep or reading him or her stories later on.

So, it is important for every nursery to include a rocking chair or simply a comfortable chair where you and your child can spend some bonding hours.

How to turn your baby room into a child safety zone?

There are a lot of things that you can consider to make your baby room truly worth living for child safety. Just like you, your baby will also needs a room that is safe from whatever environmental harms.

Child safety is the main rule to consider. So, before transferring your baby from your room to his or her room, make sure that everything in place is safe.

Here are some tips to turn your baby room into a child safety zone:

a€¢ Make sure that the crib you have installed for your baby has a firm mattress and doesn’t include decorative patterns. Also watch out for corner posts.
a€¢ Check and make sure that the crib slats are narrow. Never ever leave any space for the head of your baby to get wedged between these slats.
a€¢ Ensure that the changing table has a preventive strap and three raised sides.
a€¢ Avoid the things like comforters, pillows and soft stuffed animals from the crib, because these things might suffocate your baby, especially when your baby is in between the age of 4-6 months old.
a€¢ Once your child started reaching for things, it is best to take down all decorations or toys you have placed in or strung across the crib, from rail to rail for your child safety.
a€¢ It is best for you not to buy a toy box that features a heavy hinged lid. There is a possibility that these things might fall on your baby especially when he reaches to obtain a toy.
a€¢ Use a soft rug for the floor. This will give child safety by preventing your child from injuries and pain from those unavoidable falls.

When planning for child safety room, it is best to have an idea on how to decorate the room, what are the needed things for your child safety and how to maintain a safe place for your baby.

This process involves a lot of effort and time to be invested. The best way to succeed is to be conscious of what you want and need to make the baby room a pleasing place to be comfortable and provides child safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
can baby go over crib railing?
my 6 month old can already pull himself up in a standing position in his crib. i’ve already taken off his bumpers so he won’t b able to use them as steps. lately i’ve notice him bouncing while holding on to the rails (which btw is already at neck level) would he be strong enough to pull himself over the rails? this has been scaring me for days. any other advice on crib safety for his age wld be most welcome. thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
If is only bouncing, not jumping, you’re ok for now. Besides the bumper, make sure you have removed all other toys from the crib. Mobiles, toys, stuffed animals and pillows all can be used to step on or pull themselves up. Also make sure you have the mattress set at the lowest level. The crib being a neck level seems a little high, but he may be tall for his age, since he is ahead of the game in standing and bouncing.

Once he begins jumping and climbing, then you would need to move him to another bed. If he’s under one when you move him, it may be best just to put the mattress on the floor the first few months as he gets used to it. That way if he gets active he’s only got a 4-6″ fall. Once he’s used to sleeping in a “big boy” bed, you can transition him to a toddler or regular bed with a guard rail.

      Hope this helps,

      Alan

  2. QUESTION:
I’m looking for a crib safety net, to keep baby from getting arms/legs stuck in rails. Any suggestions?
All I am able to find is the crib tents but I don’t want a tent just the inside net to keep my daughters hands and feet from poking through the crib rails. I saw it once before on target.com but am unable to locate it now. Need help finding something like this to protect her.

    • ANSWER:
Check out www.onestepahead.com . They have a nice line of “breathable bumpers.”

** after checking again the ones at www.onestepahead.com are the same as the ones from Toys r Us, made by BreathableBaby, but One Step Ahead has them in several different colors and TRU only has sage and pink. (same price both places)

  3. QUESTION:
    Baby safety on a balcony…??
We recently moved into a condo on the second floor. The balcony has rails that are wide and unsafe for our 7 month old who is learning to crawl. We would never let him out by himself but, we still want it to be safe. Someone suggested getting chicken fence and putting it up w/ twist ties… Any other suggestions? Whats safe that he won’t be able to crawl up onto or pull down or even bite on and hurt himself?

    • ANSWER:
Go to onestepahead.com. The have all sorts of products that may be able to help you. They carry deck guards and other items. It is listed under the safety heading.

  4. QUESTION:
Is there a safety risk in elevating my baby’s mattress?
I am a mom of a 3 week old baby. The last few days, she has not been wanting to sleep flat on her back. She sleeps fine in her swing and her crib but she’s really fussy at night when she’s on her back. Also, during the day when she’s napping or just laying on her back, she cries until I pick her up. Is there a safety risk in elevating her crib mattress? The springboard allows for the mattress to be elevated quite easily without any chance of it slipping or falling. I’m just wondering if there’s a risk of her suffocating or smacking her head against the side rails. Thank you so much!
    PS – She is breastfed.

    • ANSWER:
No there isn’t my twins were in the NICU for over a month and that’s how they kept them in the incubators… They said it was better for them since they were preemies and could barely let go of thier gas…. It’s better for their breathing and for acid and such… If it’s good for the hospital… It should be ok to do… just don’t over do it.

  5. QUESTION:
will you be buying a Toddler bed for your baby?
we have a cot/crib and a normal sized single bed.
I think our son should be able to go from cot straight to the big bed (with a rail for safety) when he’s older.
but i see on yahoo a lot of mums use toddler beds????

  6. QUESTION:
I’m 13 and I want to take a VIA rail train from Montreal to Kingston can someone assure my safety?
My parents are worried about me being stolen off the train because they think I’m still a baby. Is there someone (stewardess ETC) that could make sure I have a safe travel?

    • ANSWER:
      The short answer is, no.

That being said, nothing is a sure thing, and I am afraid that you have gotten yourself into an issue that pure statistics will not settle.

Your parents are undoubtedly aware that there are some crazies out in the world, and no amount of data on train safety is going to sway them from that position.

The only way I can see you making that train trip is if they are assured that someone they trust will be there along with you the whole way, willing to be responsible for your safe passage.

Maybe if you could scare up some relative or even arrange for you to travel with a “buddy”, I think many of their fears could be allayed.

Good luck – train travel is “the bomb” (figuratively speaking, of course).

  7. QUESTION:
Can my 11 week old baby travel in a stroller?
I am making a long journey down to visit family this week and have just been informed by the rail company that my pram cannot go on the train! I cannot carry my son in a carrier as I have a bad back so am thinking about buying a cheap stroller/pushchair just for this trip. They all say 6 months and up, is this vital to his safety? He can’t sit up on his own yet but can hold his head up. Please advise!

    • ANSWER:
Most of the travel strollers you are talking about do not have 5 point harnesses (waist, crotch, over shoulders) and that makes them a bit more dangerous for younger babies. That is why the 6 months and up warning. I have seen them, though and some of them even recline back a little. Most of these, even though they do recline a little, are definitely more upright and meant for children who can sit, even if supported. I would be leery about doing this with a baby so young. Maybe contact the rail company and explain the situation. I am sure they have run across this before. Good luck and safe journey!

  8. QUESTION:
    Drop rail safety on crib?
My 9.5 mth old has just started standing in his crib. He has one of those cribs with the drop down rail on the side for easy access of putting baby in and out. The only problem is that when he tries to pull up sometimes one side comes unhooked and drops a bit, if he were to get to the other side and do the same thing, he could have it drop low enough for him to fall out if he were to stand up.
Has anyone else had this problem?

Also the mattress is as low as it will go, and there is no way to lock the crib rail in place. Should I contact the manufacturer?

    • ANSWER:
Yes you should DEFINITELY contact the manufacturer TODAY. Your baby could take a dangerous spill. You should also go to consumerreports.org to see if there has already been a recall on your crib.
In the meantime, keep your baby in a pack n’ play.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I find a baby safety helmet?
Does anyone know where I can get a baby helmet. My son is 3 1/2 months old and rolling over and will be crawling soon. We have mostly ceramic tile in my house and I’m afraid he will bump his head soon and for when he starts crawling.

    • ANSWER:
i saw one on a website recently, i’ll try to find it for you

  2. QUESTION:
    BABY SAFETY STATEMENT!!?
I looked out my front window this afternoon and I saw a woman riding her bike wearing a baby sling….with a BABY IN IT, no helmet!!!! I just want to make sure noone else out there is doing it…The baby will get HURT!!!! anyone else seen anything crazy like this before??

If I had gotten the window open quicker or been outside I would have said something!!!

    • ANSWER:
Some people just don’t think before they do things. A couple weeks ago when I was on my way to the store I saw a guy riding a bike with a toddler (probably about 2) on his shoulders!! So here he is riding his bike, and he’s trusting that this little boy is going to be able to hold on to his head tight enough that he won’t fall off. (by the way neither of them were wearing helmets)

  3. QUESTION:
Cycle seats for small children/babies + helmets?
I have had a child seat fitted to the back of my bike for my 11month old son, it is a standard upright seat that looks a little like a child car seat, comes up about 3″ above his head and has a 3 point harness. The problem is when you put on the safety helmet – which adds about 2 inches behind his head, his head is pushed forward so he spends the whole time looking at his knees and gets very upset. Does anyone know of any flat back helmets or other options?

    • ANSWER:
I know exactly what you mean.

Most better quality seats address this by modifying the shell to allow helmet clearance which is one reason I always recommend that my customers don’t buy a cheap seat.

What you CAN do is get a 1″ thick piece of neoprene foam… don’t get regular polystyrene… and place it between the seat shell and the padding. It may take a bit of artful trimming to get it to fit cleanly and touch only the back.

Also, make sure the munchkins helmet is fitted correctly. Front of the helmet must cover the forehead- if he is looking straight ahead the helmet should be parallel to the ground… it shouldn’t be fitted to the crown of the head.

      Good luck!

  4. QUESTION:
    Bicycle safety?
I recently bought a bicycle with the rear child seat attached. I bought it used at a thrift store so it didnt have safety instructions for the seat.

How old does the child have to be before they can ride in it? My 7 month old sits up perfectly by herself and is very strong. But I cant find a safety helmet for anyone under age 3. I have tried walmart and toys’r'us.

Can I put my daughter in the seat? Do they make safety helmets for young babies? If so, where can I find one?

    Thanks for any help!

    • ANSWER:
I believe all bike seats and bike trailers require a child to be at least 1 year. There are helmets available for toddlers, but I believe they also say for 1 year and older. Our local hospital does fittings and helmet sales but only for children over 1 year.

    1. A lot of people think that there is some kind of positive to falling and hurting yourself and learning. Babies aren’t that analytical. If a kid skateboarding falls and hits his head. I don’t think he’s a better skateboarder after falling. He might put a helmet on though.
    2. A babies head doesn’t solidify until age two, at age 1 there brains are most susceptible to injury. Just medical Fact..
    3. Most of us would be just fine not wearing a seat belt, Should I stop wearing mine because of that fact?
    4. Babies have been wearing helmets for Hundreds of years..They where called pudding caps http://images.google.ca/imgres?imgurl=ht…
    5. The helmet cost will drop to .99 if mass produced.

    • ANSWER:
I am expecting my first child later this year, and I have no interest in buying it. I do see that some parents would buy it. It just looks very bulky. I think it would help if it wasnt so bulky but also protected the baby. You should also try to work with babysrus or other baby stores to sell. Best of luck

  6. QUESTION:
Tell me your funny story about child’s safety products?
I am so sick of seeing all the “must have safety products for babies and kids”. I’ll start- stupid helmets for healthy kids learning to walk, and ridiculous knee pads for babies learning to crawl!!!
I am a mother- now I’m wondering what kind of lawsuits lead to these products? It’s overwhelming walking through the “safety aisle” at BabiesRus!

    • ANSWER:
What’s your point….Do you have kids then it’s nothing stupid about putting those inquires out there

Back years ago they didn’t have all these green lights and that’s when every body file to suit in court,so That’s a reason for this

      Hope this helps!!

  7. QUESTION:
Legal? Baby/toddler getting rides on quads & motorcycles? If not, what consequences?
I saw a neighbor today riding their toddler about 1 1/2 years old on a quad the mother made the father put the baby in a back pack type of baby holder so the baby was atleast attatched to dad, but neither had helmets, ofcourse baby didnt, they dont make them that small. I have seen the dad riding the baby around before on his mini motorcycle, with out a carrier, or a helmets, just holding the baby with one hand and steering with the other. Is this legal? Would the dad, and or mom be arrested if they police saw this? Would the baby be taken by cps, for child endangerment? I just dont see how this could be good for such a small child. At first the child was screaming, and the mom was yelling for the dad to stop that the baby was scared, the dad kept going. The toddler stopped crying, but it wasnt laughing and having a ball, the child was mostly grabbing onto the dads shirt really tight, and kinda not making any emotions.

I believe that the dad was doing this for his own pleasure, with no regards to the baby’s safety, and no regards to whether or not the baby was enjoying himself, and no regards to the mother who was begging him not to take the child for a ride, and yelling for the dad to slow down.

When I was about 2 years old my father used to take me on motorcycle rides around our neighborhood, he would strap me around him with his belt. My mom hated it, I can remember. I do remember enjoying it, being with my dad.

Is this legal? If not, what kind of trouble can parents get into? What would likely happen if authorities witnessed this happening? Thanks to all who answer, and God bless everyone.
We are in Northern California, USA.

I dont want to turn them in, just maybe have a talk with them and let them know if its illegal that they could get in trouble.

    • ANSWER:
In today’s world this would be considered Child Endangerment…

Child endangerment occurs when an adult caregiver or parent places a child in a dangerous or inappropriate situation. While not technically the same as child abuse since it does not involve directly causing harm, child endangerment carries stiff penalties up to and including prison time.

Few crimes engender feelings of revulsion in American citizens like those involving children. Being accused of this crime can have long lasting affects on one’s future, even if the accused is innocent.

It is common for a parent or a caregiver to have no intention of committing this crime. Carelessness, negligence or recklessness may lead to a child endangerment charge.

  8. QUESTION:

Also I do not want to turn these parents in, I only want to know if this is illegal, and what the possible consequences could/ would be, so that I can talk with the parents and let them know, before the child gets hurt, or they get into a lot of trouble. I want to know facts, not be judgmental, if after the talk it continues I will then take a different approach.

    • ANSWER:
The law varies by state, but in Indianapolis, a man was charged with a felony for carrying a 2 year old on a motorcycle. The child was riding on the gas tank.

Choosing The Safest Baby Crib

Author: Christina Taylor

It is said that baby items should be purchased after the birth of the baby; however newbie parents try to pay for a baby crib and a number of essential garments prior to this major event. Searching for a safe baby crib might turn into a genuinely intense and serious task. In this circumstance none of the secure aspect should be overlooked. This information on crib security will look at the safety aspects of baby cribs to provide you the essential guidelines on how to select the safest baby crib for your newborn.

Make Sure It Meets the Safety Standard

In accordance with the Consumer Products Safety Commission every baby crib which is created these days must measure up to these standards. Even the most affordable baby crib should meet the minimum safety standards required by several associations. There is also an additional voluntary safety standards imposed by the American Society for Testing and Materials that needs to be met by baby crib manufacturers. Baby cribs that were certified by the Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association denote that the products have met the necessary standards that they have imposed, and that parents can be assured that these items are safe for their babies.

Study shows that merely one baby from out of four new babies obtain a new crib. All the rest are contented with a second hand baby cribs or have already owned old ones used by their previous child. The fact is that the greater part of you, do this to save your family’s finances, purchasing such low-priced baby furniture. This is actually a practical means and a number of those second-hand cribs anyway are in a fine state and can provide comfort for your baby. But a number of parents are also geared up to fight against it. There are still mishaps where babies can get hurt or even cause a baby’s death especially when parents fail to check the durability of the crib. This is basically the reason why some parents insist on purchasing a new crib, to make sure that your baby is guaranteed safe. It is however important that the new crib was able to meet all the required safety standards to ensure the baby’s safety.

Unfortunately, there are still parents who prefer second-hand baby cribs as they cost less which is one of its biggest advantages. Now what should parents do if buying a new crib is way out of their budget? You must ensure that the second-hand crib you chose is able to meet present safety standards imposed by certain associations. The first step is to check if the kind of second-hand crib you’ve been eyeing out has been recalled from the market. You can do this by visiting several websites that provide listings of products that have been recalled. Supposing it has not been recalled, check if the brand of the baby crib meets the crib safety standards. After this research you can now be certain that the baby crib you chose is definitely a safe item for your little one.

  3. QUESTION:
What are essential/best baby items to have as a new parent? What’s junk? What’s invaluable? Hints? Tips?
(Sorry this is so long! Many thanks in advance to those who reply!)

We are at week 34 awaiting the arrival of our Babygirl. Gifts and hand-me-downs are starting to come in that we’re marking off the “need to get” list (per Babies R Us).

We still have lots we need to get, so I wanted to ask for your opinions. For all those moms and dads out there, I have attached, below, the Babies R Us “Parents Checklist.” What is necessary? What is not? What is invaluable? What did you get on a whim and are eternally grateful for having? What turned out to be nothing but junk? What brands are the best (i.e., I hear that Boudreaux’s “Butt Paste” is the best there is)?

I’m starting to scout out Craigslist and eBay for deals (who the heck knew breast pumps were unbelievably expensive??? At least I can get new, in box items from eBay and save a few if I watch like a hawk!). If any of you have insights that you would share, we would be very grateful. Thanks!

Important Safety Measures When Buying a Baby Crib

By Janet R.

Having a baby at home is definitely a blessing. However, there are many things you need to consider and provide for your baby. Baby supplies are very important items that you and your baby will be using in everyday living. You need clothes, feeding bottles and supplies, wipes, furniture and many others. This seem to be an overwhelming when you soon realize that you have to deal with everything you need for such a small person. Indeed, preparing for these items can cost a lot for the parents. However, there are affordable choices if you are really on a tight budget. You can go to many places that sell second hand baby items, or you can even purchase them from garage sales. Many of these items will still be in good shape, though, you can find other great deal also.

Many parents today are looking for less expensive items for their little ones. These essentials may probably found anywhere, except maybe with diapers and wipes, but the rest can be sold secondhand. Although secondhand products are far more cheaper than brand news, it is always best to baby crib that hasn’t been used. Remember, your baby will spend a lot of time in his or her crib.

Safety Standards

1. The safety standards of baby furniture, particularly cribs, have changed over the years. This means, if you have an older crib then it may not meet today’s safety standards. For instance, the crib rail need to meet today’s measurement requirements. In case the rails are too far from each other, the child may get his head stuck between the bars. Also, there should be enough space between the top of the rail and the top of the crib mattress, this is to avoid the child from climbing over the railing and falling out.

2. A crib should have a bumper to prevent the baby from getting hurt on the rails. It should be made of soft fabric to protect your child. Whether your child is rolling over the bumps, his or her head won’t get hurt that bad. It also prevent your child from getting his or her head stuck between the bars. Even though it is designed to protect your child, you still need to make sure it is secured to the crib properly to avoid suffocation. Otherwise, if the bumper is too loose the child might get entangled by it and suffocate his or herself.

3. Today, there are lots of cribs that were sold with bedding, making them crib bedding set. These sets usually come with matching blankets and pillows to match the bumper and crib sheet. However, these items can pose a risk of suffocation for your little one. The same as the bumper, your child might become entangled in the blanket and may get it wrapped around his or head or other body parts and cause an injury or suffocation. Pillows may also cause hurt to your baby’s neck, or a pillow may cause suffocation also if it ends up on your baby’s face.

So, for those who would like to welcome the upcoming newborn child with crib bedding set, following safety standards won’t hurt you. Make sure of checking first the structure of the crib and its materials. If you want, you can also purchase other baby items to include in your crib set like baby toy, few clothing, bottles, baby books as well as few surprises for the new parents.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Anybody have a fairly new/used baby crib w/safety standards?
I need it for my grandson when he comes for a visit to cape cod during the summer.

    • ANSWER:
If no one on her can help try www.freecycle.org It is a communtiy of people in any specific area that are giving away free stuff. Most is very nice condition. You can go on and post what you are looking for or search what others have posted to give away. You will be emailed through yahoo when people post new things. Good luck to you.

  2. QUESTION:
Does the Graco Sarah baby crib meet JPTM and ASTM safety standards?
This crib is sold by Target online only, so I can’t check it in the store to see the “seals of approval”. The JPTM website does not have it on their approved list, but Target.com says it is JPTM approved.

    • ANSWER:
According to the Babycenter website, it is JPMA, ASTM, and CPSC safety certified. Here’s the link: http://store.babycenter.com/product/code/16866.do?scid=SSE:GOO&ci_src=14110944&ci_sku=217772
I have not heard of JPTM.

  3. QUESTION:
Does a simmons 1980′s baby crib model # 110384248 meet today safety standards or have any recalls?

    • ANSWER:

  4. QUESTION:
How much should I sell a gently used crib and mattress for?
I have a Da Vinci Emily Convertible Crib – 3yrs old, good condition with a few bite marks on the railings. Meets safety standards. I am also including a Sealy Baby Posturepedic mattress. The retail value of the crib is 9.00 and the mattress is . How much should I sell it for?

    • ANSWER:
0 or so…start high you can always go down…

  5. QUESTION:
Baby keeps getting legs stuck between crib rails. Suggestions?
My daughter is 13 months old, and she keeps getting her legs stuck between crib rails. I mean really stuck – it’s difficult for me to wiggle them out, and there’s definitely no way she could get them out herself. She’s been doing this several times a day for two weeks now. I keep thinking she’ll learn from experience and stop sticking her legs between the bars, but she hasn’t stopped yet. She really doesn’t seem to be doing it deliberately to get attention – it’s clearly painful, and she screams when it happens. She’s quite a good sleeper and is usually happy to go into her crib. I think she’s just playing around with her feet, and her legs get wedged in.

We bought a new, good-quality crib when she was born, so the slats meet safety standards for spacing, etc. We can’t use bumpers anymore because she’s a great climber and would step on them to climb out. Any suggestions?

    • ANSWER:
Breathable bumpers. They will not support her weight when she climbs and will also prevent her from getting her legs stuck. They aren’t as pretty as regular bumpers but they aren’t bad either! I purchased mine online at Target, but I think a lot of places have them.

  6. QUESTION:
    Where is Ikea furniture made?
I know it is a Swedish company but my concern lies with the baby and children’s furniture and the safety standards used to make them. Generally, cribs made in the US and Canada are safe. So, the cribs that Ikea is selling in the US, what country’s standards were used?

    • ANSWER:
Not sure, but I will say this: My cousin bought Ikea furniture, and she said that while it was very decorative, she felt that it wasn’t safe for very YOUNG kids. Older kids, according to her, would fare pretty well, but kids under 4…..I’d recommend a crib made somewhere you trust, and by a company you trust in. If it happens to be an American or Canadian country, so be it…wish I could be of more help, but I am pleased to see that you are taking your child(ren)’s safety seriously. More often than not, people only worry about aesthetics and not safety.

  7. QUESTION:
Why do people choose to have kids when…?
Why do people have kids when they can’t afford the basics that will be needed. I know and have heard of so many people that have had babies and don’t have a crib, playpen or bassinet…the baby sleeps in the second hand 12 year old car seat (that doesn’t meet todays safety standards).

Why are these people having a baby if they don’t have enough money to ensure they have safe equipment and more to the point the equipment in the first place?

That and why are non-working people on welfare having babies when they aren’t even supporting themselves?
The babies spine does not develop properly if they sleep in a car seat.

There is a reason most of these things are standard when having kids.

Love doesn’t put food on the table, financial stability does.
My 2nd child was unplanned but we still managed to provide for him, as it is our job as a parent. Do other people think their kids don’t need a proper place to sleep or a car seat/stroller that meets safety standards?
    Again let me add:
love doesn’t save a babies life in a car accident, a proper car seat that meet safey standards does

love doesn’t make the babies back develop properly, a good safe place to sleep does that.

love doesn’t make clothes for children, financial stability does that

    food on the table….

    roof over their head…

books and toys to play with…

not all of this is needed to live but honestly do you only want your child to “Survive” or would you rather they “live” and enjoy life?
I didn’t suggest abortion and don’t appreciate the accusation.

It’s called protection for starters, read up on it. There are hundreds of couples that are ready and financially secure and want kids but can’t have any. There is a magical third option option and that is Adoption…

that or get a job…even on minimum wage you can afford the basics. And I said nothing about a “big house”.
I’m mostly referring to the parents that choose to have a baby despite their situation. I understand sometimes things do happen after the choice to have a baby.
Momto2boys what you describe is parents who have already had children that are suffering hardships and in both cases they remained strong, took on the task before them and still provided what was needed.

I was mostly asking about those that choose to have/keep a baby when they know they have no means to support the baby or choose not to.

I got pregnant at a young age but I got my little guy in daycare, finished high school, and god a decent paying job ( over minimum wage). There are plenty of excuses like being young or even tough economic times but if I can do is at age 17 so can everyone else. Now I own a house am engaged to the love of my life and my kids have everything they need and most things that they want (aside from daily candy)

In most cases these people can provide if they only try, they don’t try. They sit on welfare and choose not to work, not to provide…or they work a job and don’t spend the money on babies needs and make excuses…

    • ANSWER:
Bad choices lead to other bad choices. I have to admit, there are some people I see raising kids and ask why they didn’t have to pass some sort of exam before they had them. It’s a cycle.

And what is up with people saying their babies don’t need a bed to sleep in? Isn’t that like the first thing you buy when you find out you’re having a baby?

  8. QUESTION:
trouble with the family… what should i do?
i am 5 months pregnant and i have a cousin, who’s children i have been very involved with, who is SMOTHERING ME! she is very excited about my baby and she wants to buy everything and it’s driving me nuts. i know i should be greatful but we have very different lifestyles and taste. i try to be an eco concious consumer, i have researched cribs and carseats, for safety reasons, and i am careful about the chemicals in my food, etc. not to the point of crazy, but i try to be well informed. she is a mindless consumer of everything! she buys cheap junk because it’s cheap, and she sends yohoo(or however it’s spelled) in her kids lunches. she is the kind of person who tosses thier trash out the window of her car. i love her dearly but when it comes to my child i want things that are built to last and more than meet safety standards. i’m not opposed to saving a little money and going with a less expensive item. but not if the item is junk. beyond that we ahve very different taste when it comes to style. this is my first child and i feel like she is sucking all of the fun out of preparing for the baby by insisting that she (and the rest of the family) take care of stuff. i have tried to let her know that i already ahve things in mind, and the reason i ahve chosen those things, but she doesn’t get it. what else can i do?

    • ANSWER:
I agree with you. Sure, you can save a few bucks here and there, but if it means putting your family at risk, forget it. If I were in your position, I would tell my cousin that she doesn’t have to do anything because it is MY KID that we are talking about. Let her feed the children Yoohoo (that’s how it’s spelled), but don’t let her interfere with your parenting.

      Hope I helped!

Baby Crib Safety — Frequently Asked Questions

Author: MY FIRST ROOM

The crib is where your baby will spend a lot of their time and you want to be sure they are safe.

Below are some of the questions (with the answers) that are asked about crib safety.

Topics such as mattress position, how to place your baby in the crib, and general safety standards are discussed, as are other issues.

If you need further information you can search the Internet and visit baby furniture stores.

Q. Are there safety standards for baby cribs?

Yes there are some very exact standards for your baby’s crib.

In 1974 it was made law that cribs should no longer be painted with lead based paint.

It was discovered that the ingestion of lead (from any source) could cause learning disabilities and other difficulties in young children.

The slats of the crib must be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart, this is to prevent your baby from getting his body or head stuck between the bars causing injury or strangulation.

The side bar should be 26 inches above the mattress when it is in its lowest position.

If your child is more than an inch taller than the sidebar it is time to move him into a regular bed.

Q. Are there some hazards in my baby’s crib that I need to be aware of?

Your mattress must fit snugly in the crib;  an ill-fitting mattress could cause your baby to slip between the mattress and the side bar causing suffocation.

The mattress height should be able to be adjusted into at least three different levels.

When your baby becomes more mobile you will want to put the mattress in the lowest position to prevent your baby from climbing or falling out.

The slats should be tight, loose slats could pinch little fingers.

Do not put the crib near a window to prevent your baby from possibly falling out or becoming tangled in Venetian blind cords.

Q. What are some historical facts about the crib?

Here is a short chronological time line of crib facts:

  • 1973 – The standard for crib slats was to be no more than 2 3/8th inches apart to prevent your baby from slipping through or getting their head stuck.

Also, double latches for drop-down sidebars were to become the norm.

  • 1976 – The standard for cutouts in the crib end panels are presented.

The end panels must not have any decorative cutout designs.

Children were getting their limbs or heads caught causing serious injury or death.

  • 1978 – Cribs must now be painted with non-toxic finish.

  • 1981 – Two models of cribs with cutouts are recalled.

  • 1988 – A voluntary standard addresses mattress support hardware, failure of glued or bolted connections, drop-side latch failure and loosened teething rails.

  • 1990 – No corner posts or projections can be more than 1/16th of an inch above the drop-side.

  • 1998 – California and Washington mandate that hotel cribs must meet the same standards set for full-size cribs

  • 1998 – Portable cribs must now meet the same standards as full-sized cribs.

Q. How can I tell when my baby is ready for a regular bed?

When your child stands more than a couple of inches taller than the sidebar with the mattress in the lowest position.

If your child is climbing out of the crib, for his safety put him in a regular bed.

Q. How should I put my baby to sleep in his crib?

Place your baby on his back or on his side for sleeping.

Use one piece sleepers rather than blankets.

Your baby could slip under the blanket and possibly suffocate.

Remove all pillows and toys as well, in order to prevent suffocation.

Q. Is it safe to cover my baby with a blanket?

A blanket sleeper will keep your baby sufficiently warm while sleeping.

If you absolutely need to use a blanket, tuck it in around the bottom of the mattress.

Place your baby with his feet toward the end-panel and the blanket should go no higher than his/her chest.

Q. Is a mesh sided crib safe to use for my baby?

Yes, a mesh crib is safe provided the mesh is less than 1/4 inch in size, smaller than a tiny button on baby’s clothes.

The should be rips, tears, or loose threads.

If staples are used to attach the mesh they must not be exposed and the mesh must be securely attached to the top rail and the floor plate.

Q. Can I safely use bumper pads in my baby’s crib?

While bumper pads are not necessary, they can safely be used.

They must be very close the edge of the mattress and properly secured.

The bumpers must be flat and not puffy, as your baby could get stuck between the bumper and the mattress and suffocate.

Q. What can I do to keep my baby’s crib safe?

In order to keep your baby’s a safe place, you should make sure to all connections are secure and that there are no broken or missing parts.

Regularly, check the teething rail for splits or cracks.

Make sure the mattress spring support and your crib will withstand your baby’s increasing mobility.

The mattress itself should have no splits, tears, or holes.

Q. How can I tell when it’s time to lower the mattress?

When your baby becomes more active, when s/he begins to pull himself to a standing position or when he sits up alone it will be time to lower the mattress to prevent your little one from either climbing out or falling out.

Q. Can I hang a mobile over my baby’s crib?

Mobiles and crib gyms can be used to entertain your baby but when your child is able to get on to their hands and knees or pull themselves up.

This will prevent your baby from becoming entangled in them.

In Conclusion

Making sure your baby’s crib is safe, is an ongoing to task.

Proper positioning of the mattress, making sure all connections are secure and that there are no loose slats that could pinch little fingers will help to keep your baby’s crib a safe place for him to be.

Be sure to place him in the crib on his back or side and dress him in a sleeper rather than using a blanket.

Keeping these tips in mind will help keep your baby safe and give you some peace of mind.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
How do you teach a baby cat some basic safety?
How do you teach a 3-mth-old baby cat not to jump out the windows asnd the balcony?

    • ANSWER:
You don’t. This is not a person, it’s an animal. Put a screen on the window. You should have one anyway to keep the bugs out.

As for the balcony, put some mesh netting all the way around, or some lattice.

  2. QUESTION:
How do I put safety bars up on a HUGE window?
My baby girl is in a room now and I’ve been looking for bars for the window, both to keep people out and to keep her in. I like some out there, but they only extend to 48inches wide while the window in her room is a whopping 60 inches wide! Am I doomed to outside bars that would make fire-escape much more difficult? Or is there another option?

    • ANSWER:
What you could do is to buy a steel building grid from your building supplier. They are wired across and up,like a brick pattern. They come in many sizes. You could put up brackets to hold the grid in,say in each corner of the window. You can cut the steel to fit your window. The other way would be to use a wood trellis.

  3. QUESTION:
what are some safe window coverings for a baby’s room?
i want something that is a flat panel when down, something i can paint or put a decal on for decoration (or that comes decorative–like scenery or something)

i was thinking a roller shade? though roman shades look better, i’m worred about their safety…

    any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
I think a roller shade would be fine. There’s no cords or anything for your baby to choke on or get hung up in. I had roller shades in my room as a baby. Also, they would be very easy to decorate! Plus they make the room really dark for daytime naps. Just make sure they are secured very well up top so your little one can’t pull them down off of the wall.

EDIT: Just curious, what is the theme of the room?

  5. QUESTION:
ive just found a spiders web on my bedroom window with about 100 baby spiders in it, what would you do?
they all huddle together for safety when i go near so they must feel fear, i hate the thought of them being in my bedroom but i just cant under any circumstances kill them, the mother spider is a big un so probably all the babies will be too, or should i say the mother was a big un, its dead now i think the babies ate it.

    • ANSWER:
gently scoop them into a jar and put them outside

  6. QUESTION:
how do i get rid of rear Child safety windows?
the windows dont even get half way down.
    which i think is dumb.
if i dont want a baby falling out i would just lock the windows in place.

    • ANSWER:
It is actually to keep children from sticking their hands out the window; it is not to keep babies from falling out the window.

If you do not like it, you can get another car. It is not something that you can remove from an existing car.

  7. QUESTION:
This man wont leave me alone cut the screen to my window can i break my lease due to safety of me and my child?
This man lives on the third floor of my building. He knows my car and when my boyfriend takes the car to work he comes and knocks on my door but i don’t answer, Yesterday my window screen was cut but was fixed by the office. I have a 6 week old baby and fear for my life. this guy follows me around ive told him before to leave me alone. The cops have been called but they refuse to do anything about it. My office has been informed but they also refuse to do anything about it. Can i break my lease legally due to safety reason?

    • ANSWER:
YES! If there is a clause in your contract called the “Right of Peaceful Enjoyment” clause or worded somewhat within another clause.

Also, depending in what state you live in you may automatically get this right.

A lawyer can help you. Go see the legal aid people in your locale.

Start filing police reports to prove your claim that you do not have peaceful enjoyment of your premises.

Also go find a lawyer who sues stalkers. If you get lucky you might get a shark lawyer who will successfully sue everyone, police included, for monetary damages to you for violating you and your child’s right to safety and to peaceful enjoyment and maybe a whole slew of other rights.

I really didn’t mean to go overboard with that last paragraph. I just wanted to make clear you have lots of rights and lots of recourses available to you, but you will likely need a good, knowlegable attorney.

      Best Wishes

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Where can I find the best safety latches for baby proofing cabinet doors?
I bought the Wal-Mart brand and they are not very practical. I am looking for ones that are easy to install

    • ANSWER:
I live in earthquake turf and we use them to keep glass and other objects from flying out of cupboards during quakes. I’ve used several different types, but have found the easiest ones to both install and operate are the ones that Lowes sells. They also aren’t as unsightly as many of the other ones and the plastic they are made out of doesn’t snap with “adult” strength pressure.

  2. QUESTION:
Baby Car Seat Safety – older vehicles? install teather latch?
I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van

I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada

    • ANSWER:
In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.

Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.

Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

  3. QUESTION:
Do you use safety latches on kitchen cupboards or teach baby not to touch them?
my son is one and has learnt how to open the cupboards and draws, just wondering if you bought the safetly latches or just taught your baby not to do it

by the way, he cant get into anything ‘dangerous’ – i’ve made sure of that, just the tupperware and pan cupboards but i dont want to have to clean all them up everyday

    • ANSWER:
We don’t use latches, however for cupboards with the nobs close together we do just use an elastic band around them so he can’t open them. When our son was younger we did have a gate up to the kitchen, now he’s 27 months and we’ve moved to a house with two doorways to the kitchen and only one gate, so whenever he’s in the kitchen if he tries anything we just tell him, no, danger, and he steps away. I was told to say danger rather than hot, or just no, and it seems to be working great. But he’s still curious and gets into things everynow and then.

  4. QUESTION:
Which brand is the best to use for baby safety?
I’m trying to stop my little one from opening doors, and drawers. I have the brand safety first, using their cabinet
& drawer latches, and the ones with the tension release strap, but i find the sticky stuff holding them in place, just fails…everytime. I sick of wasting money on a product that doesn’t work. What can I use to stop my child opening drawers, cupboards, shower doors……if you know something that definately works let me know..

    • ANSWER:
I believe I have the same kind of cabinet locks and you are supposed to screw them in. The adhesive tape on them is so they stay in place while you screw them into the cabinet.

If you have cabinet doors with the handle together, I suggest just getting the slide locks. They had them that looked like a U shape and you just slid the end on and then pushed buttons on the top and bottom to slide them off. I cant find them anymore though :( BUT now they have these ones that look like a diamond and 2 zip tie looking things that you loop through the center diamond piece… they are mommy proof too though LOL! I bought both of these at walmart.

For the doors, they have door knob covers at walmart too. OR you can buy a gate and not let him or her in the kitchen and close the bathroom door…

  5. QUESTION:
I need ideas for baby safety on screen doors.?
My son is 18 months old and we have a latch that keeps the door shut, but now he is tall enough to reach the door handle (it isnt a knob it is a handle that goes across about 2 inches) Well we have been keeping the big door open because it is summer. I need some ideas on how I can keep the screen door shut, if there is a latch or something on the market when I can stop him from opening the screen door all the way. Thank you!

    • ANSWER:
You can buy a little gate that hitches onto the door! Im sure they sell them like at Walmart!

  6. QUESTION:
What is the best car seat for safety reasons, and that will last a long time (grow with baby)?
Just turned one year, 24lbs, around 31-32″ tall??? Money is no object but my car only has seat belts no latches.
Must be easy to install and take out due to two different vehicles it will go in, and able to fit in small cars like a 99 kia sportage.

    • ANSWER:

  7. QUESTION:
I need a seatbelt sown smaller! Is It Illegal? for baby capsule?
    hi there

i have a baby capsule and it has a seatbelt that goes around the unit and clicks into the safety latch. the belt is too long and i cant get it tight enough to hold the capsule still….

if i was to take it to a apolstry place or somewhere they could use industrial grade stiching and sow it smaller, is it illegal???

    what to do?

    • ANSWER:
Yes, they should be able to do it with no problem. The belt isn’t holding back an adult, so normal stitching like what is done on the belt ends is more than sufficient.

Why you asked this in the aircraft section, I have no idea.

  8. QUESTION:
Buy a used car that does not have LATCH installed?
The model car I am seriously considering buying (1995 model) does not have the latest LATCH safety bars/latches in it, as far as I know for the models produced that year. This particular car did not get that feature until a few years later than 1995. However, this is the only car I can afford right now :( I have a 20 month old toddler whose booster car seat HAS to be used with a LATCH system. Is there any safe way to purchase/use this car? Can LATCH be installed later?? (I know that’s not likely!!) What are my options here? I am going to read back through my carseat manual, but in the meantime anyone else find a solution for this problem?? I am REALLY big on safety for my baby’s carseat, that’s why I am looking to see if we can possibly work with this car, or not. Thanks so much for your experience with this prob!
OK people, NOOO, my child is not in an ACTUAL booster, she is in a carseat!!! I guess I put booster because she’s not in an INFANT seat. Geezus can I just get an answer for the question please?? In my question I stated I AM REALLY PICKY ON SAFETY do you really think my child is in a booster??!
She is in a REAR FACING CARSEAT. Geez.

    • ANSWER:
A booster for a baby? THAT IS NOT SAFE. Baby needs to be ina convertible, many easily use the car seat belts for installation. We have seats that are installed using the seat belts, and not LATCH. We have ‘three across’, the middle one needs the seat belt install. It is just as safe if installed correctly. But at your child’s age, baby should be in a 5-point harness rear-facing. A booster is useless for a child this young. If money is tight, WalMart and BigLots sell 5 pt harness convertible seats that RF in a harness to 30 pounds, FF to 40 pounds. These seats are safer than a booster. Best seats FF in a harness to 65 pounds.

The Safety Of Crib Baby Bumpers And Baby Crib Furniture

Author: Ryan Dube

A very common safety concern when parents consider how to set up their baby crib furniture bedding is whether or not to use crib baby bumpers.

When it comes to this style of bedding for baby crib furniture, a 2005 study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding crib baby bumpers found that over 20 years, from 1985 to 2005, twenty-seven children aged one month to two years suffocated or were strangled by crib baby bumper pads or bumper pad ties. Aside from deaths, the study also found that there were a total of twenty-five injuries caused by bumpers or their ties.

What the study doesn’t make clear are the circumstances of those injuries or deaths caused by crib baby bumpers, and whether they might have been related to how the child was positioned for sleep, their general strength or whether they suffered from underlying medical conditions. Considering that twenty seven deaths over twenty years indicates one or two incidents a year, the possibility that other factors could have been involved in these cases is strong.

Most parents today now understand that there are many safety concerns regarding older baby crib furniture, such as slots that are too large and might allow the baby’s head to slip through, resulting in serious injury or death. However, when it comes to finding bedding for baby crib furniture, the safety concerns of the “professionals” sometimes seem a bit overboard. Newer baby crib furniture is manufactured with ultimate safety in mind, with slots that are now too small for a baby’s head to pass through.

The study, which analyzed three U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission databases for deaths related to crib bumper and crib-related injuries from 1985 to 2005, found that 27 children from 1 month to 2 years old died from suffocation or strangulation related to bumper pads or their ties. The study also found 25 nonfatal injuries attributed to bumpers. Crib baby bumpers also come in styles that have certain features with safety in mind as well. Most have ties that are on the outside of the crib that get tied onto the baby crib furniture post, and the only case where you wouldn’t want to use a crib baby bumper is where the child is so frail and weak that they can not even roll themselves around inside the crib. New parents have enough to worry about, and crib baby bumper safety should not be one.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

    • ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

  2. QUESTION:
    Baby safety?
My baby is 8 months old. She rolls over, seats up on her own also. In the morning she wakes up and just rolls over and sometimes cries. I thought if i can put little stuffed animals in her bed, so when she wakes up she can play with them;instead of her getting bored and crying for me to pick her up, eventhou she is feed and clean. Is that safe??

    • ANSWER:
I think at 8 months old that would be ok. I’d make sure they are not big stuffed animals though. Smaller/medium sized ones that don’t cover her face. Or does she have a favorite rattle or something hard like that?

  4. QUESTION:
Safety tips for baby while staying w/dog owner for the holidays?
We will be staying with a family member for three weeks over the end-of-year holidays. We have a 6-month-old baby who will (of course) be with us. Recently this family member has demonstrated irresponsible dog-owning behavior, which resulted in a family friend being “nipped” at a party. I have spoken with this individual and communicated my concerns. What else can we do to help ensure everyone’s safety? The baby is not yet mobile (i.e. not yet crawling or walking).

    • ANSWER:
Wow, do what you can to get out of the visit. Nice as dogs are, this dog has already demonstrated what he can do.
If you have to go, make sure you don’t leave the baby’s side for a second as long as the dog is around.

  5. QUESTION:
Been picked up by airport bus with a 5 month old baby will it have a safety seat for the baby?

    • ANSWER:
no… you have to hold on to the baby…..

  6. QUESTION:
What are the required and safety things I need to take for my 6 months baby to swim in the sea with me ??
I am planning to start swimming with my 6 mons baby in the sea with me. I need your kind assistance and experience to tell me what do I need to prepare for her, what are the safety stuff…..etc.

    Thanks a bunch

    • ANSWER:
Never go alone with her. Always have another adult, at least on the beach if not in the water with you. Don’t go out too far and don’t take her in if she’s been fed within the last hour.

  7. QUESTION:
looking for a chair for baby of 9 months with safety straps.Only the one he has at the moment tilts forward?
he keeps trying to stand up in his chair, and actually went completely forward the other day, luckily I was in the room with him when it happen. although he did hit his face on the floor but nothing too serious, but could of been. I have been looking everywhere for a baby chair from 9 months upwards with safety straps as he is not walking yet,and not sturdy enough to balance himself. The chair he has at the moment is for birth to infant FP.Can anyone help

    • ANSWER:
If you’re talking highchairs, Peg Perego is great. If you’re talking a bouncy chair, which I think you are. Kids shouldn’t be in one after they learn to sit, it’s dangerous. Try putting him in his excersaucer, or if he doesn’t have one, that would be a good investment. Otherwise, put him in a play yard where he can’t escape from, but can move around safely

  8. QUESTION:
Where can I find a baby safety helmet?

How to Pick the Right Baby Furniture

Author: Mickey Pro

Getting children’s furniture can be overwhelming and a little surprising- there are just so many good baby furnishings to choose from. Most mothers and fathers these days don’t possess unlimited funding to spend on baby furniture, and if you have never had a child, it can be really tricky to decide on which baby furniture is necessary, useful or possibly, a waste of time. Even just before giving birth, you would probably have your baby space already set up to welcome the latest member of your household. Child bearing is a lovely experience that can be made far more special especially when it comes to picking baby furniture and decorating your very own baby space. As soon as you have planned your nursery layout theme, then it is high time that you pick the appropriate baby furniture to go with it. Here are some of the most necessary baby furniture items that your nursery should have. A Good Crib. Investing in a excellent baby crib that will last you for ages is something worthwhile. There are plenty of convertible baby cribs obtainable in the market these days that could last for a decade or much more. Convertible baby cribs can be transformed into toddler beds and daybeds as your baby gets older sparing you need to buy a new bed room set. Basically, as your child learns to move on hands and knees from one side to the other, it may be time to modify your mattress. Get a mattress that will snuggly fit into the sides. As the primary centerpiece in your baby space, ensure you don’t only go for cribs with aesthetic value, but take into account its safety features as well. Investing in a convertible crib will indeed save you money in the long run. It may cost more initially, but it’s better than acquiring beds over and over again. Baby dressers. Obtaining a strong and long lasting dresser is a life time investment that can be used by your child even when he is in his adolescent and college years. Select multifaceted dressers that can last you for ages and find something that complements your nursery’s interior too. You can often play safe with colors by selecting dressers in natural finishes or neutral hues. Rockers. A good rocker is without a doubt a baby furniture ‘must have’ especially when your infant has problems sleeping. Rockers and gliders are considered lifetime investments that can be used originally in your baby space and then later on, possibly in your TV space or leisure den.

  4. QUESTION:
Where can I find safety information on baby gear?
I am 22 weeks pregnant and have been searching for baby stuff–furniture, strollers, etc.–so we can make up a registry. Up to this point I’ve just been reading other people’s reviews of the items, but I keep reading reviews where the parent mentions that the item meets safety standards (no recalls, etc). Does anybody know where I can find the safety information? My husband and I don’t have much money so we’re buying less expensive items, and I want to make sure I’m not sacrificing safety in the name of my budget.

Any help would be greatly appreciated; I don’t even know where to start searching!

    • ANSWER:
I would go to the consumer website information because if you go to the product web site of course they are going to tell you that there product is the best

  5. QUESTION:
Do you think baby furniture from a resale shop is Ok?
Ok so I am on a really tight budget. And have a long way until my child is born. However I don’t have money for brand new baby furniture.
We are sharing a room with my boyfriend which is already crammed.

So do you think baby furniture from a resale shop is Ok?
I’m talking swing, crib, bouncer, etc.
I have a travel system picked out already just for safety purposes.
Thanks guys you are helping a lot.
Especially with the matress I hadn’t thought about that.
And the car seat I am expecting to get at a baby shower if not that we will buy straight from the store!

    • ANSWER:

  6. QUESTION:
How much did you spend on getting ready for baby?
New-ish parents: How much did you spend on gathering all the needs (and “extras”) for your first baby–including nursery decor and furniture, clothing, stroller, playpen, safety fittings etc.? What was given to you (i.e. hand-me-downs or shower gifts) and what did you have to save up to purchase yourself?
    Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
As a mother of 5 and grandmother of 4 I can tell you that we tend to spend way too much on items that are used for such a short time. I suggest looking for some items at resale shops or other places that sell used items. Borrow whatever you can from a friend. After buying an expensive swing I discovered that that baby didn’t even like the swing. Don’t go overboard on the clothes. There are so many cute outfits out there, but they outgrow them so fast. Ask friends and family to pool their money to buy you that special crib or stroller you want. buy combination items such as a crib that will convert to a twin bed, a playpen that you can use as a second or travel crib. But don’t go into debt to get these items. Your baby will never know the difference and you will enjoy your baby more if you aren’t worrying about how to pay for all the “extras” you thought you had to have.

    • ANSWER:
Well you could reuse some of the stuff from your oldest child, like crib, high chair and carseat- if you bought your carseat new for your child they’re goo for 5 yrs…

But to answer your question: The crib is fine-I personally like wooden colour cribs- or dark browns..

As for the carseat-you shouldnt get an infant carseat that’s not the same brand as your stroller-they wont fit.
As for the Safety First Stroller I dont like them. I think they’re OK, but they’re cheap and cheaply made. I would suggest getting a regular Graco stroller…

      http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2813887

      The high chair is OK… they’re all OK… it’s a matter of taste…

As for the paci-well the one you’re showing is the very common Nuk.. which is a very good brand so it’s up to you….

I particularly like the Nuby brand

      http://www.nuby.platformtwo.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=blogcategory&id=35&Itemid=52&lang=en

      because the shield is soft…
As for the sippy cups… I would go for the Nuby brand! They’re amazing! No valve, no leaks, just perfect!

      I think I’ve covered everything!

      Good Luck!

  8. QUESTION:
Is it safe to paint a babies crib?
Having a baby soon, started looking at baby furniture, not really in to the wood or metal frames which are black or white, thought about getting one with a little more color to it, but of course those cost a lot more, I’m wondering if it’s safe to buy a crib and paint it myself, I’m pretty good at painting things, I did a couple bike frames, but of course that’s completely different and the concern is about the babies safety, so is this a safe thing to do? If so what kind of paint would be best to use, thanks.
