      I think at 8 months old that would be ok. I’d make sure they are not big stuffed animals though. Smaller/medium sized ones that don’t cover her face. Or does she have a favorite rattle or something hard like that?

      Check out craigslist!! I got a 5 in 1 for w/ the mattress!! It sells for 5 new w/o the mattress. Pretty much all the baby stuff on there is in great shape.

      In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.

      Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.

      Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

      Tip 1. Securing your child car safety seat Always install the seat tightly, using your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1″) of movement of the seat from side to side or forward. Each time you place your child in the car safety seat, give it a tug to make sure it is still secure

      car seats are all pretty much the same just different styles (decorations) and as for strollers i would suggest getting one that you can open with one hand or really easy to open and storage on the bottom… there has been a recall on alot of strollers with the sun hood injuring fingers so just make sure you look up the item before you buy to see if it has been recalled

  1. QUESTION:
    What baby gates do you use and would recommend?
    We have a large opening at the landing of our stairs (approximately 4 ft) and have been looking for a baby gate for that area. We also need two more standard size gates for other locations around our home. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
      My son is 14 months old and we have three very different gates up in our house. I’ve been happy with all of them. The first gate we got was Summer Infant # 07060, Sure & Secure Extra Tall Walk-Thru Gate. We bought this for our hallway. It is a large opening (45 inches) and I needed something with an opening to easily walk through. I also didn’t want this to be a permenant gate that screwed into the wall in case I needed to remove it temporarily. This gate did the trick. It’s pressure mounted. I’m very happy with the gate. We’ve had in installed now for about 6 months. Here are the pros and cons.

      Pros:
      pressure mounted
      extra tall
      easy to get in and out of once you get the hang of it
      fairly easy to install
      spring relase so it closes on its own
      My son has not been able to pull the gate down even though he tries to shake it.

      Cons:
      When my son shakes the gate he does move it slightly on the wall. Although as mentioned above he hasn’t been able to pull the gate down. So it does hold up good.
      It was a little tricky lining up the gate when installing it.
      You can’t tighten it too much or the gate won’t open and close.

      The second gate we purchased was for the bottom of our stairs. We also have a large opening at the landing so we needed an oddly configured gate. We went with the Configure Gate by Kidco. We’ve had this mounted now for about 4 months or so and I love this gate.

      Pros:
      Very Sturdy
      Easy to get in and out of
      My son can’t budge this gate
      Mounts to the wall
      Can angle it to fit odd openings

      Cons:
      Expensive
      Some steps in the directions are a little unclear. It wasn’t hard to install it just took a little longer than it should if the directions had been written better.

      The third gate we purchased was for the top of the stars. We went with the Evenflo® Secure Step Metal Gate. We’ve had this gate up for about 2-3 months now and haven’t had any problems. Although, my son isn’t upstairs for too long, so he hasn’t really tried to shake the gate yet. The gate seems like it’s very sturdy. My husband and I have tried to shake it and it doesn’t move. Of course, since it’s at the top of my stairs I’m always keeping an eye on my son just in case.

      Pros:
      Installed quickly
      Seems to be very sturdy
      Has an indicator on the gate – Red means the gate is not closed properly. Green means it’s locked properly.
      Easy to open once you get the hang of it

      Cons:
      The gate can be adjusted to various sizes. There are two screws to loosen, slide the gate to the appropriate length and then tighten again. I can tell you that for us hand tighening didn’t work. You were able to fairly easily slide the gate which rendors it useless since you can’t lock it. However, once I got out our adjustable wrench and lightened the screw with the tool. The gate length is now locked into place and hasn’t budged.

      I see from the reviews on Amazon for this gate that two other people had the same problem, I had with the knobs not tightening properly. As I said once we tightened them with an adjustable wrench, we didn’t have any further problems. But, you may not feel comfortable with this and may want to avoid this gate altogether.

      My favorite gate of the three by far is the Configure Gate. I hope this helps. Good luck.

    Does Sweden require a certification for importing baby gates?
    I’m interested in expanding my local business to include customers in Sweden and I’m wondering if they require a certificate or safety marking on importing retractable baby gates? I’ve been able to find a few things, one being an EN 9130 marking, but that’s about it. Thanks in advance for any and all help!

    • ANSWER:
      I’m pretty sure the product has to meet the EN 1930:2000 standard for children’s safety barriers, and that the product itself has to have the marking on it. Usually there should also be a CE mark on it.

      In 2003, the Swedish Consumer Agency (Konsumentverket) tested 9 different baby gate products available on the market at the time and found that only one actually met the EN 1930:2000 standard, called Kiddyguard, from Lascal. Despicable! The products that didn’t meet the standards were all subject to mandatory recall/withdrawal from the market.

      I suggest you contact the Swedish Consumer Agency for further info – contact details are on their web site. The link below is for the English version of their site. I’ve also supplied a link to the above report, although it’s in Swedish only.

    What are the best/inexpensive baby gates for the top and bottom of stairs?
    I need a total of 4 baby gates and from what I have looked at they are so expensive. I need 2 for the top of the stairs and 2 for the bottom of the stairs. Any suggestions please!

    • ANSWER:
      My cousin took an ordinary wooden baby gate (something current) and modified it himself with wood to attach it directly to the wall for the top of the stairs. He made something better than what you can buy.

      For reasons I don’t understand, I have not seen a baby gate at a garage sale in many years, so I can’t suggest that you go there.

    How many baby gates do you use for your stairs?
    So I’m moving Monday and our new house is 2 story and I need to buy baby gates do you put on at the top and bottom of the staircase at your house or just the top….. or bottom and bring it up when you come upstairs It just seems like a hassel… What do you do?

    • ANSWER:
      Well, it depends on your situation. For example, I live on a second floor, and stairs are inside of our apartment. We only have a gate at the top of the stairs, since the front door is at the bottom of the stairs. But if you have a two story house, and you hang out on both levels, you should usually have gates both at the top and the bottom. Carrying gates up and down the stairs would be a hassle. If you can afford the price and are okay with drilling holes, the walk through gates would be the best. They’re easiest to operate. I know they have those pressure mounted as well, but I don’t know how reliable they are.

    Does your young toddler throw all his/her toys over the baby gates into other rooms?
    Every night I put all his toys away and every day he takes them and throws them over the baby gates, like into the kitchen or whatever. He enjoys throwing them over the gates more than actually playing with them.

    Does your young toddler do this? Mine is 15 months.
    When do they actually start playing with the toys rather than just throwing them???
    HA! Our entry way is the same I have to kick toys out of the way for people to come in.

    And our kitchen is full of toys, I have to wade through them all to get in there because he throws them all in there.

    • ANSWER:
      From my past experience, I remember my son’s Doctor telling me it’s normal for them to throw starting at age one. It’s actually considered part of their development of cause and affect. “What happens when I throw this stuff” “What sound will it make”, “Where will it go”, etc. My son did it from 12 months to about 18 months. At 18 months is when you have to start telling him that toys are not for throwing, but for playing, and slowly he will understand, but you have to enforce it. Not like it will stop him completely, but he will slow down and start playing. My son is 3 1/2 and knows he’s not allowed to throw toys, unless it’s a ball and it has to be outside. Of course he still will throw something here and there, just to be a kid!!! Hope this helps! Good Luck!

      Wow, I love the plethora of answers you received on this one LMAO.

      Is there any way you can lock them “better”? Maybe put tape around the lock/snaps? Is there another kind of baby gate that your daughter can’t unlock? Maybe you could put some kind of fabric (an old sock/shirt) around the lock and tie it? I don’t know…I am just throwing some ideas out there lol.

    • ANSWER:
      The wooden kind that attach to the wall with hinges are best. Pressure gates, or ones made of plastic in my opinion are way too flimsy.

    When (at what age) are baby gates on the stairs no longer necessary?
    We have a 20 month old daughter and are moving to a new home that has two sets of stairs (wood treads only-no carpet). We have been looking at baby gates for the top of the stairs and have noticed that most of them say to remove them at age two. Should we bother with gates? Our daughter climbs up stairs easily and is just a little unsteady going down. Should I just teach her to go down on her bottom? I want her safe above all but also hate to drill holes in our custom built railings and new walls if it is unneccesary. We also have children ages 6, 5, and 3 years old and I worry about them climbing the gates as well. Thanks for any and all advice!

      I think the main reason they say to remove them at 2 is because the kid can (and will) learn to climb over the gates, causing more of a safety issue. I think she sounds like she is ready to not have them. maybe have her practice a little bit on going down.

Baby Cribs Safety — Better Safe Than Sorry

It is a sad fact but one we have to come to grips with, not all baby cribs are safe.

Baby cribs are supposed to keep your baby safe during sleep but did you know that when badly constructed or improperly assembled a baby crib can be a serious hazard to your child?

No matter how expensive the baby crib is parents should use caution when choosing a crib for the nursery, and should follow instructions to the letter.

One of the biggest mistakes some people make is they “assume” that all cribs are safe, but whether you are using a brand new baby crib that you just bought a couple of months ago from a reputable store or recycling the one that you used for your older kids, or a second hand one from a garage sale it is important that you closely inspect the crib for hazardous possibilities as they may be lurking in places that you would not even consider remotely dangerous!

Here are some tips that can help keep your child safe in a baby crib.

Close inspection

When buying a baby crib or when you are about to use one, make sure that everything is in place and there are no broken or bent parts.

Sharp edges, missing joints and small removable parts in baby cribs can also be dangerous as they can be choking hazards.

Side edges and protrusions can also become strangulation hazards as blankets, necklaces and shirts can be caught.

Never buy or use cribs that have these flaws.

Follow the instructions

Never believe that for one-minute you know everything about baby cribs just because you have used one before.

And no matter how much knowledge you think you have, it is still imperative that you read the manual and instruction guide.

In addition to providing the step-by-step guide on how to set-up the baby crib from the box, the manual will also contain some tips on how to properly care for your crib and to avoid accidents while using it.

Non-toxic finishes

The baby cribs finish should be made with non-toxic materials that are recommended for young children.

As babies’ body systems, especially the immune systems are still developing, it is important that they be protected from chemicals and toxins in the environment.

When buying a used baby crib, make sure that the finish is sound and not flaking or peeling, also if it looks like it has been refinished you may want to find a different crib as it would be impossible to know for sure whether it was refinished with a child safe non-toxic material.

Drop sides

Keep the crib uncluttered

Remember that the more things inside the baby crib, the greater the chances of an accident, I’m sure you’re generally aware that anything can be a potential choking and strangulation hazard.

To help avoid this, keep the baby crib to a bare minimum, only placing things that are absolutely necessary like a pillow and a blanket.

Toys inside the crib are okay if your baby is awake and playing under supervision, but always remember to remove them when sleeping.

Parents are also advised to avoid placing dangling toys on the side of the crib as loose straps may capture your baby and create a strangulation hazard.

Check for alerts and call-backs

The Consumer Product Safety Commission lists safety tips, alerts and call-back warnings on baby cribs on their website at www.cpsc.gov and should be followed.

His “night night” is polyester but feels similar to chenille so I may be able to make the switch easily if chenille is okay.       I use the Babesafe cover too!!

      Chenille is not 100% cotton.

      Use a super-sized 100% cotton bath towel. It took me a while to figure that one out!

      I just wanted to make sure you understand that the cotton blanket goes between the mattress cover and the mattress sheet. Babies shouldn’t sleep with blankets in their cribs.

    Newborn: Where does baby sleep when you bring him home??
    Im due January 4th and confused about where to have the newborn sleep. I have a baby safety class in 2 weeks, but am getting the babies room ready now so would like to know what I need ready.

    I have a crib and a pack n play that has a basinette. I assembled the basinette and the hooded part kept coming un-velcroed. It’s dissapointing.

    But anyways, where should the newborn sleep & for how long? When is it safe for baby to sleep in crib?

    • ANSWER:
      Newborns can sleep in a crib as soon as they come home. However, many parents (myself included) find it more convenient to have the baby in a bassinette close to their bed for the first few weeks or months. This way you don’t have too far to travel for middle-of-the-night feedings. This worked well with my daughter as I was able to fall asleep faster. Some small babies may also feel overexposed by being in a big crib all by themselves. Since our daughter was premature, we decided that a smaller bassinette would be more intimate and probably help her sleep better.

      If you do decide that a basinette is best for you, I would recommend that you not use a travel bassinette. Rather, look at borrowing or purchasing a used “moses basket” or other bassinette (see the attached links to babiesrus). You may prefer to have your baby sleep in a crib if you are a very light sleeper. Otherwise, you’ll be waking up with every single sniffle, sneeze, and grunt (which babies do a lot of).

    Where should a newborn baby sleep?
    I wanted to get your opinion on where the baby should sleep, and why.

    I feel like the baby should sleep in his/her room, with a baby monitor, so he/she grows accustom to it. Sure, it probably is a pain to get up and walk down the hall a few times a night. But doesn’t it promote better sleeping habits?

      In your room.. in a bassinet or a co-sleeper. My son hated his bassinet so we got him the Snuggle Nest adult bed co-sleeper that is placed right inside your bed.. he loved it and slept there until he was 3 months. He had no problem transitioning into his crib either. He likes his crib. I am not into the Pack N Play choice for a place to sleep at night.. it is meant to be packing for playing or for a quick nap, not to be used as a bed. It’s uncomfortable in my opinion.       he just lays next to me between me and the wall. he never sleeps in the middle cuz my husband is the hardest sleeper ever! he actually falls asleep in the pack and play initially for bed, but once he wakes up i bring him to bed with me. i just wear a tank top to bed every night. i always have tho so nothin has really changed there except for now i gotta wear a bra to bed to guard from the leaking lol

    • ANSWER:
      I used it throughout my pregnancy but I wasn’t as strict with following the schedule as it called for. It’s hard to know if my son was affected or if it’s just his nature (he is our first so we have nothing to compare to) but he is a well-natured, happy little boy. He just turned 1 last week. He rolled over at 3 months, crawled at 6, cruised at 7-1/2. He hasn’t started walking yet but I think that is because he’s smart enough to know that he’ll get there faster crawling (he’s VERY fast). He weaned himself of his middle of the night feedings and started sleeping through the night at the same time at 6 months. Now he goes to sleep with no problem and sleeps almost 12 hours a night. Rarely cries “just because”.
      Again, hard to know if it was because of the Baby Plus or just great genes :) but I would/will do it again.

    Question regarding safety issue of putting our baby to sleep on her stomach?
    Okay, so I know it’s safest to put your baby to sleep on their back, but my daughter has been sleeping on her stomach since she was 3 months old, she refuses to sleep on her back and if I put her on her back when she’s asleep she immediately rolls over to her stomach. Is this a problem seeing as she’s been doing it for a while now. She turned 7 months on the 11th and she just started sleeping in her crib again, she had been sleeping with us in our bed since she was 3 weeks old. I’m just worried about SIDS. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
    Yeah she rolls over on her own has been doing that for quite some time now. She crawls, moves her head just fine, and she also pulls herself to stand.

    She’s been excellent at holding her head up, pretty much since the day she was born.

      My son only slept on his stomach too, and I didn’t worry too much because I observed his sleeping and he had a strong neck and always moved his head if he needed to. Every parent is different. You can only do what is best for you and baby, just be sure to observe as she sleeps one night so you can learn her movements. They change quit often so just make sure to check on her :)

    Is it safe to have a toddler and our new baby sleep in the same room?
    We only have two bedrooms. My daughter is currently 25 months old and I just found out I’m pregnant with child #2 (Yay!).

    We will be switching my daughter over to the daybed in that room. I worry (and wonder how others have dealt with) have a baby in a crib in the same room as a toddler. Is there any safety contraptions that could keep her from getting to the new born?

      I had a 2 year old and a new baby, but I didnt put the wee one in the room straight away.
      Have the baby in your room for at least the first few months and that will give you an insight into how the older sibling interacts with her new brother/sister.
      You will just need to teach her not to go near the crib when baby is sleeping.
      But everything will probably be fine

      Just don’t put the new baby in straight away as that won’t be fair to your daughter, you will only end up with the two of them up during the night feeds

      Yes, we have shared our bed with each of our 4 kids for the first 2-3 years of their lives. We all enjoyed the experience very much. Contrary to what people often think, the child doesn’t have a hard time going into his/her own bed after. My kids never came to our room at night to ask to sleep with us. I believe that when you make a baby feel secure and don’t try to force them into independance prematurely, they will naturally become independant in their own time. It’s a very special way of bonding with your baby, cuddling and nursing your baby. And when you sleep with your baby, you don’t have to wake up and sit on a chair to feed your baby. You just turn onto your side and give your breast and fall back asleep!

      You can put the baby in a car seat and then put the seatbelt over it. This is the safest procedure for a baby.

      My cousin’s daughter was out of her high chair by age 2. She has her own little table and chair where she feeds herself. If you don’t mind feeding your child in your lap, you might consider returning what you bought and getting a toddler chair instead.

    I have 14 month old twins, and I will admit- I have considered investing in a pair of them. The boys are at the point where they can walk very well, and would rather walk in the stores or wherever we go, but they are also at the point where they want to run in all directions and get into everything.

    I can see the appeal, and can’t help but think that it might make things easier when we go out. But at the same time, I just don’t like the idea of having my child in one.. Outing would be simple if I had only one baby to worry about, but I have two who don’t yet understand the need to stay right with me and hold my hand. I also don’t have the capability of running in two different directions…

      My twins are 14 months too and I have a pair of twin reigns. They are the ones that you can put around either or 1 of your wrists or they have a belt you can attach the reigns to so you are hands free.

      I have to admit though, that although they are great for keeping them out of the road and close to me etc, taking them bot out on my own even with the reigns is completely off limits for now!

      They end up getting tangled up and still trying to go in different directions so it’s difficult to go out on my own with them both without them being in the pram. Taking 1 is fine but both together is a complete nightmare! lol I suppose in time they will understand more and realise that they will have to behave whilst out with mammy on her own, but for now the words no and stop just go over their heads so maybe in a few more months I’ll give it a go on my own with them but for now unless someone else is with me, I put them in the pram and only let them have a run around up the park on the fields so that they cant come to any harm and neither can i! x

    My baby loves to stand and practice walking i have a bad back and wondered if the moonwalk harness might be really great? Anyone tried it? There’s also a similar model called the Walking Wings, but more expensive. I found the moonwalk model on ebay for a low price that’s why i’m leaning towards the moonwalk, but either way, anyone tried this type of thing?

    • ANSWER:
      the Walking Wings look like you can stand straight up where as the moonwalk looks like you will still have to bend and at an odd angle to.
      I say spend the extra money.

      I have a bad back to and the moonwalk looks like it would just make the problem worse.

    how to adjust safety 1st harness on car seat (PLEASE HELP)?
    I have the Safety 1st ProPack Travel System – Clemson care seat and stroller. Today I wanted to adjust the harness to the 2nd point for my baby. It has five points. but I cant remember how to put the buckles in the back of the car seat correct. I just cant remember. I cant fine the manual either. please help.

    It’s a baby harness and I have one. Before my daughter started walking I was like, “No way am I going to have my daughter on a leash!!” Well now she’s walking and I had to buy one. My view has completely changed on this product because I know that with this product my daughter is always within a few feet of me and can never just run off. Children at the age of 18-24 months run off all the time whether parents are watching them or not and I think this is a great product now. What do you think? Give me your OPINION and tell me why or why not! Thank You!

    • ANSWER:
      I never used one with my boys, but with my 2nd, who was no busy and inquisitive, I really considered it. Before children I thought it was so wrong to put my child on a dog leash. But you know what, it gives your child the opportunity to move about which keeps them happier than being strapped into a stroller, they get to work their lil muscles, and like you said, you’ll know exactly where they are.

      When it’s come to parenting I’ve learned a lot of lessons, but the major one is, “Who cares what others think if it works for me and is keeping my children safe”.

      I’d rather see your lil one a leash in a store than on the back of a milk carton!!!

    Question about flying with young baby
    My husband and I would like to go to Edinburgh in September for a few days. We want to bring our son who will be 5 months at the time of flying. I am getting a bit worried about his safety as both airlines ryanair and aer arann do not allow car seats on their flights. I would like to get some advice from parents who have brought an infant on a flight on how they managed. Has anyone used the crelling safety harness?

    • ANSWER:
      Ok – don’t panic – it’s dead easy! I live in London and my mum lives in Aberdeen. I flew solo with my daughter from a couple of months old loads of times and never had any problems. You don’t need to bring a car seat. Bring your pram and tell them at check in that you want to bring it to the gate. They’ll give you a luggage tag to put on it. You’ll have to take baby out of the pram so the pram can go through the x-ray scanner so try not to take one that’s too heavy if you can. Remember you’re only allowed one piece of hand luggage each so don’t stuff the pram full of stuff if you can’t get it into your bag. They’ll let you bring the pram right up to where you get on the plane and then they’ll put it in the hold. Not sure if you’re breastfeeding or not but you’re only allowed 150ml of liquid through security. You can always buy those little boxes of ready mixed SMA from Boots or similar once you’re through security.

      Once on the plane (great thing about having kids is you always get to go first!) they will give you an orange belt. You simply put your own seatbelt on as normal and attach the orange belt to yours and strap baby onto your tummy (a bit like one of those papoose things). If you are hiring a car in Edinburgh make sure you tell the car hire people that you need a car seat for a 5 month old and it should cost about £12 or so on top of the hire charge.

      Bring a dummy or something for him to suck in case he gets bad ears during take off and landing. You’ll probably find that if he’s the kind of baby that sleeps in the car, he’ll sleep during the flight. If he cries and screams, don’t feel embarrassed – everyone knows that kids do that and it’s not their fault!
