5 tips to create a child proof home

Author: Diane Forster

Child proofing your home can seem like a daunting task for any parent. The truth is that child proofing can be as easy as you want to make it. We’ve put together a list of 5 of the most successful tips to make your home a safe place for your child.

The first child proofing tip on our list is to prepare well in advance, like all things child proofing is often left until an accident happens rather than being a preventative safety measure. In our opinion you should start thinking about child proofing before your child can crawl, after all once they become mobile your house will become their playground.

The second most valuable tip we can give is to purchase a child proofing starter kit as it contains the most commonly used child proofing equipment such as cupboard locks, toilet seat locks and drawer locks.

Number three on your child proofing tips list is to invest in a good quality stair gate. A stair gate is not just an essential piece of baby safety equipment but it is a god send for parents. You can place a stair gate on areas such kitchen doors to avoid having to fully child proof your kitchen.

Fourthly, see your house from the eyes of a child. Simple things that you think they would not get into or be interested in can often surprise you. Things like DVD players and remote controls can be a child’s next toy. Purchase any further necessary child safety products and keep things like remotes out of harms reach.

Finally tip number five is to buy a baby monitor, to put your mind at ease on those occasions that you cannot always be with your child, after all every parent deserves a break!

You can find everything you need to child proof your home in the Safetots online shop including child proofing starter packs, stair gates and baby monitors. You can even find a host of useful information and advice to help you along the way. Take a look now or contact a child proofing expert for more information.

Frequently Asked Questions

			QUESTION:
What age is acceptable to remove child safety gates on stairs?
My daughter is 3 years old and stays with her grandparents one night a month. They have a very tall staircase that has wood, no carpeting, and her room is upstairs, while they sleep downstairs. My mother thinks our daughter is old enough to not use the gate at the top of the stairs any longer, but my husband and I are concerned that she’s still a little wobbly (especially after just having woken up) and there is a danger there. I’ve looked online for any info but would like some feedback from others who might have a similar situation. The thought of her falling scares me to death. How do you know when a child is old enough not to need safety gates?

				ANSWER:
When she can go up and down the stairs consistently by herself without falling, she’s old enough to not use the gates. My niece is 3 and every time my sister thinks she no longer needs the gates, she ends up falling down the stairs.

			QUESTION:
I need to find a stair gate that is 34″ tall. Can’t afford to have one made Help!?
I finally convinced my husband to replace the iron stair railing with wood. We found a carpenter and bought a standard child stair safety gate that he was to install when the railing was done. Upon completion he informed me that the gate is too short, we need a 34″ tall gate. I can’t find one anywhere. I’m 8 mths pregnant with my 3rd child, I have a 3 and1 yr old, this is something I don’t want to deal with. Anyone knows where I can get one?

				ANSWER:
I’m not really sure why you need a 34″ tall gate, but why don’t you try the pet store, they sell doggy gates and they look just like baby gates. Or why don’t you install the gate a few inches off the ground so it is higher?
Is this about how it will be attached to the stairs? because I have an all oak staircase which I refuse to drill into, so instead I attached an extra piece of wood to the stairs using large heavy duty zip ties and then drilled the hardware into to that, which will be removed when gate is no longer needed.

			QUESTION:
Installing a gate for child safety at the top of the stairs is easy and no problem. What is available mid way
My worry is when the child falls from the top stair with stairs being so high with today’s 10 foot ceilings on the first floor. What can I do to help catch them in case of a fall to prevent injury or other.

				ANSWER:
baby gates are not very safe to place at the top of the stairs however if you place one in front of there bedroom and one at the stairs it will slow her down babys can climb over the gates my 16 month old did and surprised me place one at the bottom of the stairs and just keep and real close watch on baby

			QUESTION:
What can I do? My 5 year old has learned to open the child safety gates?
I have a 5 year old and a 22 month old…both girls…I have gates at the top and bottom of the stairs to stop the toddler from wandering and maybe falling downstairs at night (she sleeps in a toddler bed) This morning woke up and it was oddly quiet…that was because the 5 year old had woken up and quietly gone into the toddlers room…they had then sneaked downstairs together as the 5 year old has suddenly learned to open he very stiff safety gate! They had gotten themselves a tin of biscuits and sat down to watch tv! I reckon they had been there an hour or more before I woke up….my 5 year old used to be too nervous to do anything like this…but now her sister is bigger she seems to have gotten braver!

There was a terrible mess….and I am worried now…I sleep very heavily and I think it must have been about 5 AM that they got up….we usually get up at 6.30 am….I could set an alarm clock I suppose…but that would mean me rising before 5 am!

What do other Mothers do about early rising sneaky kids?

				ANSWER:
Hiya Daisy, as you know my two are a similar age to yours (although E turned 6 last week)

I have actually given up on baby gates. E just climbed over them and when he was a year old A started to climb over them too. (email me, I’ll send you a video clip!)

Initially, I switched the gate from the top of the stairs to the bedroom door (as if he did fall he wouldn’t tumble right the way down the stairs) and now I’ve removed them altogether. There really was no point.

As you don’t have the climbing issue I suggest you set down ground rules for your older girl. If she gets up early she must either stay and play in her room or if she goes downstairs, do so alone, close the gate behind her and NO biscuits.

Obviously when the younger child is a bit bigger and you are confident she is fine with stairs they can both go down together – you may even get a decent lie-in if they are entertaining each other

			QUESTION:
Safety Gates for children on indoor stairs in the house are recommended untill what age?

				ANSWER:
My son is 2 in April and we are still using the baby gates.

			QUESTION:
Can the same stair gate be used as a safety device for either children or pets?
I am currently researching stair gates for both myself and a friend– one of us needs a gate for pets and the other for children… wondering if the same type is safe for either use.

				ANSWER:
Yes they can be used for both pets and childen.

Dallas Day Care Field Trip Safety

Author: Leonard Gallion

Field trips are a great way for children to experience concepts outside of Dallas day care and child care institutions. In order for your child to take advantage of these types of opportunities safely, it is important for you to discuss the following issues with your current or potential child care provider.

Group Size

Find out what size group will be sent out during field trips. Dependant on the ages of the children and the destination, a licensing standard of up to one caregiver per 12 children are required.

Additionally, each group of children on the field trip should have an adult who is solely responsible for the children’s care. Each adult should have a list of children in their group, emergency contact information for each child, and a first-aid kit.

Transportation Information

Find out how the children will be transported on field trips. According to Texas state law, all children under 17 years of age need to wear a safety belt, and children under the age of four and/or less than 36 inches tall need to ride in an approved safety seat.

Program Standards on the Field Trip

Certain policies can be instrumental in field trip safety. Children should use a buddy system, be aware of a meeting place in the event of separation, and should wear name tags which include the program’s name and phone number. A cell phone should be on hand in the case of an emergency.

Roll call should be taken continuously. Before leaving the classroom, roll should be taken and repeated after loading the vehicle. Once the children have arrived at their destination, a head count should be taken. When they return to the vehicle, prior to departure, the presence of all children should be confirmed.

Once the children return to the center, a final head count should be taken as the children exit the vehicle and upon their return to the classroom. A caregiver should be appointed to check the vehicle to ensure all children have exited the vehicle and all personal items have been collected.

Volunteering on Field Trips

Ask your childcare providers whether parents may volunteer on field trips. If you are available and it is permissible, consider being a volunteer on field trips. You will be able to spend quality time with your child and get to know others at the facility. Additionally, you will provide an additional set of eyes, ears, and hands to assist the caregivers.

To see if there have been any valid complaints or information regarding a program, or if you would like more information regarding legal field trip procedures, call the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS), visit their website at www.dfps.state.tx.us, call 1-800-862-5252, or contact your local licensing office.

			QUESTION:
Can you recommend a really large indoor play yard or gate product for a crawling baby?
Our baby started crawling so we want to put him in a play area inside the house (living room) so he can’t get into stuff. Something like this, http://store.babycenter.com/product/safety+-+baby+care/safety/gates/superyard+xt.do?asc=false, but much bigger (so he has plenty of room to roam, play, and explore), and hopefully nicer-looking. I’d prefer something with mesh instead of bars. Also something free-standing like the one in the picture above; nothing that requires construction or drilling holes into a wall, please. Can someone please recommend a product? A make and model name and number would be great, a link would be even better. Thanks!

				ANSWER:
I had the super yard, it works to an extent, but your child will soom be hanging on to the edge and whining unless you are sitting in there with him. I suggest that you are better off biting the bullet and gating off the entrances to the entire living room or play area and baby proofing it now… Good luck!

			QUESTION:
From who or from where does Babee Tenda obtain our mailing addresses?
My wife and I got suckered into attend a a baby safety seminar which turned out to be a sleazy sales presentation for the BaBee Tenda line of baby products. I think it is reprehensible that a company resorts to this method to sell their product. The sales presentation is offered via invite received in the mail. The big question is, from where or who does BaBee Tenda receive our names and mailing address?

				ANSWER:
We got suckered into that 4 years ago. I found out that when you don’t check the tiny box at the bottom of the formula clubs and other baby item offers that says “do not share my information with partner companies” you get enough junk to fill your recycle bin. This time around I was sure to check the box and never got anything other than what I asked for.

			QUESTION:
Best brand of breast milk storage bags?
What kind of milk storage bags do you like? I have been using Lansinoh and they work fine, but I am running out and need to buy more. I was thinking of getting these “easy pour” ones http://store.babycenter.com/product/safety+-+baby+care/easy+pour+milk+storage+bags.do? – has anyone tried these? I think I tried Medela in the beginning and they leaked. I need to freeze them, so they need to be sturdy. Thanks for your thoughts!

				ANSWER:
I have to agree with Tanya – use bags that are made specifically for breast milk only – you know they are sterile, they are made FOR breast milk so they are the right thickness, they have the measurements mL/oz right on the bag. Also do NOT reuse them, they are not THAT expensive, I think rinsing them and reusing them could lead to problems and if you’re putting soap in there, you may not get all of it out which could cause your child to have diarrhea and could make the milk taste different.

Okay, so I’ve used Gerber and Lansinoh. I prefer the Lansinoh bags because they can be frozen flat, it makes them sooo easy to store and organize. I have a large supply of frozen milk and it was getting difficult and time consuming sorting through them trying to find the oldest bags first. So, now I freeze them flat, and I can stand them upright in a plastic bin in the freezer and they are already in order. The Lansinoh bags also have an easy pour spout, turn the bag side ways (flat part facing ceiling) and squeeze the two edges together and they make a nice pour spout. They are also very well priced – 50 qt. for .99 at our local Target.

			QUESTION:
What baby products are safe to use? Is there a list or guide available?
I am looking to give shower and baby gifts for a family member, and the mother is being very specific about safety. She does not want anything from China because of the recent recalls. I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any guidelines or lists somewhere that identifies safe products. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

				ANSWER:
There is no list that I am aware of but there are some products
available that are made in the USA and in Europe.
My favorite bath product for babies that is made in the USA is Noodle and Boo.
The best toys are made in Germany by Haba, Selecta, etc.
Also, clothes made in France and most of Europe will not have fire retardant in it(nasty stuff that gets soaked into your baby’s skin).
Some of the products are a little pricey, especially coming from Europe because their currency is very strong right now. I will list some websites below.

			QUESTION:
Are your baby products safe?
Have you looked at this web site? It rates the safety of various baby lotions, diaper creams, baby wipes, baby washes… I found out that none of our products are considered safe.

This web site rates the safety of many different brands of baby lotion, baby wipes, powders, diaper creams, etc. I just went in and found that of the nine products we have on hand, six were rated and had a hazard rating anywhere from 3 to 6. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics advises against using anything with a hazard rating higher than a 2. Needless to say, we will be making some changes starting today!

I noticed that many Mustela products seemed to rate really badly, with some listed as highly toxic and possibly cancer causing, etc. Many of the California Baby products were rated as safe. But Burts Bees did not fare as well as I had expected.

				ANSWER:
I have seen that webpage and I look at it occasionally. I think it’s helpful, although they tend towards being alarmist. Some of the ingredients they deem as unsafe–parabens, for example–have not been shown to be unsafe. Their rationale for categorizing some ingredients as unsafe seem scientifically questionable. It is still a good resource because it makes you aware of a lot of potentially harmful ingredients in everyday products, but I find that I have to do a lot of my own research to find out if their warnings are legit.

World Traffic Safety Symposium Awards Volvo for Child Booster Cushion System

Author: Glady Reign

Volvo Cars’ new booster cushion system is the automaker’s gateway to get the World Traffic Safety Symposium awards. The new system from the automaker is engineered to help protect children who have outgrown their toddler seats.

At the 2007 World Traffic Safety Symposium, a panel of judges from the Dept. of Transportation, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the Automobile Association of America Foundation for Traffic Safety, the National Road Safety Foundation, and the New York Police Department Traffic Safety Division awarded Volvo the first prize in the Automotive Manufacturer category for this innovative safety feature. The award stands among three other safety acknowledgements: Public Service, Media Activity and Aftermarket Product Design.

The Swedish automaker has contributed several safety milestones in the industry including the Volvo brake caliper, seat belts, and airbags among many others. The latest, so far, is the booster cushion system which is a combination of the tougher side body structure, load limiting seat belts, inflatable curtain and other reliable parts to deliver a distinctive engineering solution that ensures safety and comfy travel experience. Volvo’s innovation is the world’s first two-step integrated booster cushion. This is why it deserves to receive a prestigious international commendation.

“Our goal is to help protect occupants. This award acknowledges our efforts to help protect our smallest passengers, our children,” noted Thomas Broberg, the Senior Safety Advisor for the Volvo Car Corporation in Sweden. “This new seat, in conjunction with our refinements in side body structure and the inflatable curtain will have a significant reduction in child injuries.”

The seat belt positioning is one of the essential considerations when ensuring safety of children of different heights. Several studies have shown that proper positioning with the use of a booster cushion helps lessen abdominal injuries caused by the child slipping under the seat belt. Field data in several studies supports these findings and stresses the significance of booster seats. Studies point out that the booster be designed to hold the belt snugly across the pelvis or thighs during a frontal impact.

The overall effectiveness of booster seats is estimated as 31 percent as compared to utilizing only a seat belt and as high as 75 percent as compared to no restraint at all. Getting all children of appropriate age and size to use booster cushion delivers a potentially noteworthy safety benefit.

According to a study carried out by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 39.5 percent of the 664 children inspected in belt-positioning booster cushion were considered as critical misuse. The most common misuse was improper fitment of the shoulder belt followed by loose belt, improper fit of the lap belt and inappropriate age/fit.

“We took into account the child’s physical size and weight, seat belt misuse, child physiology, along with redesigning our vehicle side body structure and side impact inflatable curtain to come up with this new integrated two-step booster seat,” said Broberg. “There will be better fitment of our three-point seat belt, a wider age and weight range, and better attitude for the child who can now easily see outside with the added benefit of reducing driver distraction. Hopefully we will hear less often: ‘Are we there yet?’”

			QUESTION:
Need advice about food health/safety in Egypt – travelling with a child?
Next year I will be travelling to Egypt with my husband and 8 yr old daughter. I am totally paranoid and fearful about getting sick from either the food or the water. (A lady I work with just got back from a tour where she was the only one who didn’t get sick). Is it true that you can’t even shower with your mouth open? Is it a bad idea to bring a child on a tour?

				ANSWER:
Drink only bottled sealed mineral water. Brush your teeth with it.
Eat cooked food at a good restaurant or at your hotel. For salads and fruits eat only what is peeled.
Do not drink a very cold drink after a long time in the sun or when it is hot.
Squeeze a fresh lemon on your food when possible.
Concerning food there are no big name diseases, it is a matter of changing your eating habits and vulnerability due to traveling and changing your place. Eat with moderation, choose light food that is nearest to your regular meals. Boost your immunity system by taking vitamins.
When you order a cold drink ask for it without ice.

Use a good sun blocker, wear a hat, wear cotton clothes like a loose cotton skirt and cotton T shirts. Your hat should cover the back of your neck, carry a bottle of water and drink often, wear comfortable shoes with cotton socks.
That should do it. Enjoy your trip.

			QUESTION:
Do car seat in car bases offer extra safety for a child or are they purely for convenience?
My travel system didn’t come with the in car base but i’m happy to buy the base separately. Was just wondering if it adds any extra safety or is it purely to make it easier to just click the car seat in place

				ANSWER:
I have no statistics to offer, but I think that if nothing else using the infant seats with the base makes them safer because you are more likely to take your time and ensure the base is properly buckled in ONCE (or several times, as you need to move it) than you are to make sure that the car seat is buckled in properly each and every time. It is quite easy to get distracted- none of us are perfect- and we could put our children’s lives in danger if a small distraction caused them to not be properly buckled. Also, instead of just the seat belt holding the car seat in (in open slots), the seat belt holds the base through a closed pathway (mine also has a backup method to secure the seatbelt) AND the metal locks on the base hold the car seat in place.

Yes, it is convenient to use the base but I feel it also adds to teh safety of the car seat.

			QUESTION:
Does anyone know where to find a nice looking, aesthetically pleasing, child safety fire guard?
We have a really nice open cast iron fireplace but our little one is just starting to crawl and will soon be walking too, so we need to stop her crawling into the fire… there are loads of baby/child fire guards on sale in the UK but MAN are they all ugly! They are just cages – it makes your house look like a prison. The best one we’ve seen is from Mothercare that has a curve to it, but the actual bars are still cage-like.

Whereas with the normal (non child safety) fire guards / spark cages, there are hundreds of really attractive looking ones, with nice meshes, wiggly-bars, stained glass screens etc. But these don’t attach to the wall – the baby would just pull them over on top of her…

Are there any baby safe fire guards out there that look like normal ‘pretty’ fire guards?

				ANSWER:
It is really difficult to find something different from the ‘cage-like’ ones. I found one which is a plain mesh, it’s in the sources. Hope it helps.

			QUESTION:
I still don’t have a solution for baby proofing my windows?
So, I have been off and on thinking of a baby proof solution for my windows. I have a bit of time, maybe a few months before I really have to get serious about it. We live on the second story of a duplex.

They have screens but screens are not sufficient in safety. And we MUST have them open in the summer because we have no AC and it gets hot here.

We do not want to use the burglar bars on them. We feel they are a fire hazard because we only have one door going in and out of the house, if we are to block the windows with bars we could become trapped in an emergency.

I have not been able to find anything that will work.

We have several large and tall windows that are only about 1 1/2 to 2 feet off the floor. The largest ones span about 5-6 feet wide. The largest ones are in the living room. The smaller ones we are going to use the baby window guards. But they will not work on the ones that are about 6 feet wide. The windows are also very tall, we have vaulted ceilings and they go up to the top of the ceiling.

The windows have no ledges or ridge of any kind that I can use a baby gate in them and the baby proofing window guard is not long enough… They are close enough to the ground that when he is walking (which will be soon) he could reach them with no problem.

I thought about using mesh but will that hold well? How will I keep it on there? My son is a bruiser and very strong… If I were to try to put some mesh over the window I am certain he could rip them out.

I have heard about kids being killed falling out of windows and I just worry that they could be a hazzard.

Does anyone have any suggestions other than burglar bars? And I would use gates if I had a place to put them in to over the wondow but there is no ledge…

Any ideas? Thanks!

				ANSWER:
Http://onestepahead.com has a plexiglass type guard that is meant for stair railings so kids cannot fall through. What if you put some of that across the bottom 2 feet or so of the big windows? You could put it up a few inches so you could crack the window. Look for the “no climb deck guard”.

She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!

I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused”

Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!

				ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.

My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.

As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.

			QUESTION:
Baby proofing the home?
What lenghts have you moms gone to when baby proofing the home?
I have the main things like a fire guard and covers for plug sockets, baby is not old enough to need safety gates yet but the little fingers are getting everywhere! She is getting super fast in her walker. My kitchen is a no go area!

				ANSWER:
Watch out for any sharp corners or edges, like the corners of furniture or tables. Make sure all drawers and cupboards have safety catches so that they can only be opened by an adult. My house is pretty minimalistic right now, no ornemants or breakables anywhere. If you don`t want it touched, chewed, slobbered on or put down the toilet, then put it away for a couple of years! I keep any medicines and sharp knives in top cupboards just to be sure. Put stair gates up well before you think you will need them, or one day you will find out your little one can do much more than you think! It also helps get you in to the habit of closing them every time you go through, even when the kids are in bed. Its just a good habit to have because then you will do it automatically and never forget. Watch out for choking dangers, never leave anything small within reach. I had to get rid of a lot of my older sons smaller toys when my daughter came along. I put them in the bin because I thought if they are not in the house then there is no chance something will be given to her by accident by her brother. Never let them play with remotes (even though they love them) as the batteries may fall out and be chewed / swallowed. Be aware of places they could get their fingers stuck in, for example don`t let them poke their little fingers down the plug hole in the bath, my daughter loves to try that one – but they may not come out. Get a bath seat from 6 months to stop them jumping about and slipping in the bath. My daughter likes to put her fingers in the hole where the washing machine door latches to, so I have to make sure it is always closed. Obviously don´t leave hot drinks in little arms reach, and have a stairgate on the kitchen door so that when you are cooking anything the children are kept out of the kitchen. If you have pets never leave the pet & child together unattended, even though they may be lovely, they may not appreciate having their eyes poked out and ears pulled! As they get older watch out for places they can climb up onto and possibly fall down. My 12 months old climbs on the coffee table and walks across it, but does not realise she can not just walk straight off it! I think it will end up in the garage for a few months now! Sorry if this one sounds a bit obvious, but I have to say it due to something that happened to me. Never assume that a 5 point harness can keep a child into a high chair, even if it is done up as tight as possible. I put my daughter in the high chair to keep her away from the oven while I checked the dinner, assuming that there was no way she could get out. I was in the next room for no more than 60 seconds, and when I came back in she was sitting happily on the TRAY of the high chair. We have a hard tiled floor, and had she fallen I dread to think what would have happened. She was only 10 months old then. Luckily I managed to get to her in time. One more thing, also from experience – put wedges in doors to keep them open or closed when your child is crawling. It stops them from trapping their fingers, but also, my son took his thumb nail completely off by pushing a door over one of his hands, using his other hand. Also, keep the toilet seat down at all times – unless you want them splashing about in the water! Remove any toilet brushes, they are attracted to them too. Apart from that you`re fine lol
Don`t worry they grow up quickly!

			QUESTION:
Buying child home safety equipment..?
I need to now start buying safety equipment for my home, like stair gates, plug socket protectors, fire guards etc.. which are all quite expensive. I was wondering if there is any help towards getting these as im a single parent on a very low income.

i was made redundant whilst on maternity leave and my husband died before baby was born. i have had the sure start maternity grant but the £500 was spent on a cot, clothes, nappies, pram etc..

if anyone knows of any schemes out there to help provide these will be great… else its walking around those charity shops in hope to find something..
*reply to proud* do you have children? if so you should understand that all these things add up.. a stair gate may only be £30 but you need 2 for top and bottom of the stairs.. fire guard..another £30+.. then u need plug, door and corner protectors, cabinet locks for under sinks etc.. all adds up. you may be fortunate enough to say it doesnt cost alot.. but having to save up for all these things means that only my baby eats that week

				ANSWER:
In my area there is a project that’s council run and founded (I live in quite a deprived area), they actually contacted me and came to fit cupboard catches and stair gate etc. So if I were you I’d phone your local council and ask them as they provide these services in deprived areas because of the high infant mortality and accident rates.

Oh or failing that you could join Freecycle on yahoo groups and ask for free safety equipment or look out for it.

Good luck.

			QUESTION:
this is for all women to read if you have a baby or not!?
Body: I guess it is the season………….for safety reminders.
Here’s the first for the season. Let’s all be careful out there!

NEW FORM OF KIDNAPPING

Please take a minute to read this. This is very scary and
could happen to any of us.. Seems like every nice thing people do for one another can be perverted. A new twist on kidnapping from a very smart survivor:

About a month ago there was a woman standing by the mall
entrance passing out flyers to all the women going in. The woman had written the flyer herself to tell about an experience she had, so that she might warn other women. The previous day, this woman had finished shopping, went out to her car and discovered that she had a flat. She got the jack out of the trunk and began to change the flat. A nice man dressed in a business suit and carrying a briefcase walked up to her and said, “I noticed you’re changing a flat tire. Would you like me to take care of it for you?” The woman was Grateful for his offer and accepted his help.

They chatted amiably while the man changed the flat, and then put the flat tire and the jack in the trunk, shut it and dusted his
hands off.

The woman thanked him profusely, and as she was about to get in her car, the man told her that he left his car around on the
other side of the mall, and asked if she would mind giving him a lift to his car. She was a little surprised and she asked him why his car was on other side. He explained that he had seen an old friend in the mall that he hadn’t seen for some time and they had a bite to eat, visited for a while, and he got turned around in the mall and left through the wrong exit, and now he was running late.. The woman hated to tell him “no” because he had just rescued her from having to change her flat tire all by herself, but she felt uneasy. (Trust that gut feeling!)
Then she remembered seeing the man put his briefcase in her trunk before shutting it and before he asked her for a ride to his car.

She told him that she’d be happy to drive him around to his car, But she just remembered one last thing she needed to buy.
(Smart woman!!)

She said she would only be a few minutes; he could sit down in her car and wait for her; she would be as quick as she could be. She hurried into the mall, and told a security guard what had
happened, the guard came out to her car with her, but the man had left. They opened the trunk, took out his locked briefcase and took it down to the police station.
The police opened it (ostensibly to look for ID so they could
return it to the man). What they found was rope, duct tape, and knives. When the police checked her “flat” tire, there was
nothing wrong with it; the air had simply been let out. It was obvious what the man’s intention was, and obvious that he had carefully thought it out in advance. The woman was blessed to have escaped harm. (Amen? Thank you, God!)

How much worse it would have been if she had children with her and had them wait in the car while the man fixed the tire, or if she had a baby strapped into a car seat? Or if she’d gone against her judgment and given him a lift?

I’d like you to forward this to all the women you know. It may save a life.

A candle is not dimmed by lighting another candle. I was
going to send this to the ladies only; but guys, if you love your
mothers, wives, sisters, daughters, etc., you may want to pass it on to them, as well.
Send this to any woman you know that may need to be reminded that The world we live in has a lot of crazies in it. Better to be safe than sorry.

PLEASE BE SAFE AND NOT SORRY!!
JUST A WARNING TO ALWAYS BE ALERT AND USE YOUR HEAD!!!

Benefits of Air Purifiers for New Born Babies

Author: George Sandler

Are you a new parent? If not, are you expecting to become on in the future? If this is so when that moment comes, your life will literally change for ever and ever.

Like many mothers and fathers, there’s a reasonable chance that you would do pretty much anything to promise the health and safety of your new baby.

When doing this, were you aware what an air purifier can do for you and also your child? There is a reasonable probability that you’ve heard of air purifiers before. If you’ve not, they are machines, which are electronic. The aim of these machines is to help clean the air within. This is generally done with filters and collection grids.

These filters and collection grids have an inclination to trap bacteria and air particles, stopping them from circulating around in your house. Naturally, clean air is vital for all, however it is particularly crucial for babies. That is’s the reason why it’s really important that you do everything in your power to keep the air in your house, or at a minimum the air within your child’s room clean and pure.

If you’re a smoker or a pet owner, the most suitable option could be to quit smoking or lose your pets, but if that isn’t a choice an air purifier may do.

When it comes to buying an air purifier, particularly if you need it to have benefits to your kid, you’ve got a assortment of different options. Air purifiers tend to come in 2 main styles. Individual room air purifiers have a propensity to wash the air in a specific quantity of space, sometimes anywhere from 2 hundred to 5 hundred sq. Feet. Dependent on the dimensions of the room in query, certain air purifiers could be able to wash the air inside one or 2 rooms. As you will presume, whole house air purifiers are air purifiers that clean the air within a total house. This is done when the air purifier is hooked up to a home’s cooling and heating system.

When doing this, you will be wanting to keep a substantial number of things under consideration. Perhaps, the most imperative thing to bear in mind is the general cost of owning an air purifier. A considerable number of air purifiers are filter-less, but only some of them are ; basically most need a filter. In numerous cases, you will find that these filters need to be replaced, once in a while. It is critical that you check the cost of all spare parts, including the filters. It is the only possible way to make certain that you’re actually getting a fair deal.

As well as checking the final price of an air purifier, you’ll also need to check your uses. If you would just like to have the air in your child’s room be clean and fresh, you’ll be able to purchase just about any air purifier that is’s now on the market. What you are depending on using your air purifier for is important ; it’s the key to meaking your purchase worth it.

			QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?

				ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.

Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.

A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

			QUESTION:
Too young to have a baby?
First off, let me make it clear that I am NOT planning on having a child right away (it will probably be at least five more years before I start trying); this question is solely out of curiosity! That said, let me explain my situation a bit. Here’s what you need to know:

I am 20 years old. My boyfriend is 23 (closer to 24) years old.

He and I have been in a wonderful, steady relationship for two years. We get along well, and very, very rarely argue. We’re very compatible, and absolutely in love.

We plan to get married soon after graduating from college.

We live together in an apartment with our kitty. We’ve lived together for about nine months, and we love it.

We both attend school full time at the University of Washington.

I am an Early Childhood and Family Studies major, and a philosophy minor. I also have a background in psychology.

I plan to work as a professional nanny until I have my own child, at which point I would like to be a stay-at-home mom if money allows. This will likely be a feasible option, as the career my boyfriend is planning on getting into pays roughly ,000 to 0,000 a year.

I have worked as a nanny for over three years, for children of ALL ages (from birth to thirteen), and I love every age range. This has given me lots of experience taking care of children (yes, including diaper changes and tantrums) and I love every minute of it. I’m very good with kids.

I also read up about childcare and child development CONSTANTLY. I’m even subscribed to several parenting magazines. I know all about childcare, health and safety, the best baby products, milestones (and how to help a baby reach them), styles of parenting (I most closely identify with attachment parenting), birth, breastfeeding, emotional development – the list goes on and on and on.

We both really want one child. We have baby names picked out, we know exactly what we want the nursery to look like, we know which baby products we want, we know which values we want to pass on to our child, etc., etc., etc. We even have ideas for traditions we want to pass on or start as a family.

My boyfriend and I are NOT really into “partying.” We’re not the typical college students who like to drink and go clubbing – we’re not into doing the things people typically mean when they say “take this time to be young.” We like hanging out at home and just being together, and we enjoy dreaming of and planning our future. We’re extremely responsible, financially and otherwise (we’ve never been late on a single bill, if we use credit cards we pay them COMPLETELY off at the end of every month, we save money for the future, etc.). We’re intelligent and educated. We’re laid-back, low-key, and stable. And we have a lot of love to give!

I want a baby more than anything in the world – I wake up thinking about it most days. I can’t wait to be a mom and I love my future baby already. But I know that part of loving my baby is giving it the best life possible – which, for me, means waiting a few years until we’re both done with school, we’re married, we have a 2+ bedroom house, we have more money to spend, etc.

HOWEVER, I think about being a mom all the time, and I always wonder what it would be like in my current situation. This has left me extremely curious as to what people would think if I had a child. This is where you come in! Please answer the following questions:

1) If you DID know my situation (if you just skipped down to this question, please read what I wrote above to learn more about my situation), what would you think of my boyfriend and I having a baby? Would you think we were too young? Too inexperienced? Too irresponsible?

2) If you did NOT know my situation, what would you think? (Imagine you just saw a two people, who appeared to be about 20 and 23/24, with a baby. You knew nothing else about them.) Too young? Too inexperienced? Too irresponsible?

3) How long do you think we should wait to have a baby? What would you do if you were in our situation?

4) Do you think we will make good parents when the time comes?

5) Any other comments you’d like to make? I’d love to hear what you think!

I know this was a very long question, so thank you for bearing with me. I’m dying to know what people think. Please do answer! I’d really appreciate it. :] Thanks!
There are a few things I’d like to clarify, since people have been mentioning them:

1) I DO plan to wait until we’re both finished with school.

2) I DO plan to wait until we’re married. And, yes, we DO plan to get married.

3) I HAVE talked about it with my boyfriend, and we ARE on the same page about everything.

4) I know about the litter box thing, and my boyfriend would do the scooping when I got pregnant. (Actually, by the time I get pregnant, I hope to have my cat using the toilet – we almost had him trained already!) My cat is a purebred, healthy indoor cat with no diseases or health issues, so hopefully that wouldn’t be an issue.
5) Believe me, I do NOT only want the child when he or she is a baby! The only reason I kept using the term “baby” is because I was referring to a time relatively soon after birth (i.e. when I have the child, or when you hypothetically see a young couple with a newborn). I’m very excited for all ages and stages! I can’t wait to see my child grow up.

				ANSWER:
Hey!

I am 20 in two weeks and I too can’t wait to have a baby. But I am counting down the days until I am old enough and financially stable to have one.

1. Considering your situation you sound like you would be a great mother. I mean, there are 35 year olds who are still not mature enough to have babies but still do.

2. 20/24 is not an uncommon age to have a baby. It is actually a good time to have a baby. The only reason it is really ‘out of fashion’ is because people usually do not have money by then or are still young and like to party. If you were 17, I would be saying something completely different.

3. Personally I want to have a baby when I am around 25. Because by then I would have saved enough to have my own house, finished my degree and have worked a few years to build up some money. That is the only thing really holding me back, money. And the fact that non of my friends have babies and I would really like my children to be brought up with other children around them.

4. Sounds like you would make a lovely mother. You have more knowledge about kids than most mothers. Not every mother has studied child care, though some seriously should have to complete some kind of parenting course before they can be parents.

5. Waiting for that day to come is hard. The way I see it, every day that I work, every day that I study, is a step closer to having everything set up the way I want it for by baby. I would hate to have one now and not be able to have the nursery the way I want, or all the toys and books I want to get for my baby. Or the freedom and stability to be a stay at home mum. So it is better in the long run, if I wait.

Good luck

			QUESTION:
Mashup education, experience, and skills at 24. What should I do if establishing a school is my eventual goal?
In college I have studied business management, European politics, advertising, philosophy (four of these one year each), and performing arts communication (am in junior year, will be graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication next year). I failed my first four attempts at college not because of laziness or Iack of commitment; but because I made some ignorant choices in my personal lives that required a lot of cleanup, wrecked my relationship with my family, and compromised my mental health. In between I took a year off to take care of myself and make amends at home, got back into college, and gradually pursue the dream again.

The dream has been in my heart practically all my life: I want to set up the first performing arts high school in my country that provides hard working, talented teenagers the opportunity to test the waters of professional showmanship within the safety of a responsible educational institute before they’ll have to make up their minds if this is what they want to pursue in tertiary education (e.g. conservatoires or performing arts college) or for life. At some point in my life, I want this dream to actually come true, but I don’t know yet where to start.

I’m 24 and have been in college since 16 after accelerating two grades in high school, so my first go at university was a rushed decision. However, I always knew that I would want to own my own business one day (i.e. the school) and that I will need to know how to raise capital, sell the product (school programs), lead people, and sustain a long living organisation.

Out of my five studies, the one that has the biggest impact on me was probably advertising, which helped me understand how brand development, corporate culture, corporate identity, publicity and image work as part of a company’s marketing strategy. I did well in advertising but had to leave to take care of my personal issues. Initially I chose it was because I was too chicken to audition for music school (I had stopped playing music for about 3 years then, I’d probably flunk anyway), but it’s creative and based on the business principles I have encountered in a previous study.

My current study, PA, has been the most stable, but the program sucks. The campus is originally a PR school that happens to be attended by a number of local celebrities; so they made a communication program tailor made for students intending to pursue a career in showbiz. We ended up getting raw public relations material with odd classes like anthropology, law, and telecommunication technology, with two supplementary art classes per semester.

I don’t mind the academic subjects, but am alarmed at the lack of theory basis, technique drilling, and emphasis of dedicated showmanship in these classes. We don’t even get to choose what kind of performing arts we intend to specialise in, we just get some singing classes and some acting classes but they’re basically just throwing the baby in the bath water. So I can sing a bit, act a bit, dance a bit, write scripts, direct, and produce a production satisfactorily, but I can do none of these at a professional level.

The reason why I didn’t take education major was because I’m not interested in being a classroom teacher. My goal is to raise the capital to start this school, establish a particular brand of education with a distinctive corporate culture, and lead and train the decision makers to run the business responsibly. However, considering that I will need to know the principles of setting up curricula and methods of approaching students to bring out the best of them, I am willing to consider pursuing a master’s degree in education.

When it comes to work experience, I have had many jobs but not been able to keep them. My longest job was selling skin care products and recruiting people for an MLM company; I lasted 2 years but can’t call that a career. Other than that I have worked mostly doing on and off translation projects, and briefly worked in a clothing shop and as an MC for concerts and corporate events. Now that my musical skills have died, my remaining best gifts remaining would be languages (I’m trilingual), public speaking, fusion cooking, leadership, strategizing, and writing… but I have no formal training in any of these and (except for languages and writing) have barely used them in professional settings. I’ve considered to start working in TV broadcast or an advertising consultancy… they can always use some creative entertainment and I need to make money anyway, but so far my attempts to get into the industry have not been successful. Furthermore, at this point I just can’t see it yet drawing me closer to my later goal of founding a performing arts school. I just don’t want to make another bad decision I’d regret later in life.

A prospective employer once told me that I know what I want, but currently do not have what it takes to get what I want. He’s right, but my life has only just begun and I can do someth
I can do something to change that if I could just map out where I want to go, learn, work, and consistently dedicate myself to it. I don’t believe that my dream is impossible, but it will require breaking down into realistic baby steps I can rationally work on now, and constantly following up and revising strategies to get there.

What I’m wondering is… how do people get into the education business? What did successful private school founders do when they were young? What kind of people did they hang around, and what kind of books did they read? Why did they have a passion for setting up this school? With the kind of education, work experience, and skills I have, what are some valuable things I can use to get closer to the dream? What kind of skills, experience, and further education will I have to pursue? And since I

				ANSWER:
Base on your dream, you need to have passion in education. Without passion it’s difficult to success. You have a goal to achieve, but you don’t know how…that is normal. Because you don’t have to map out everything till you success. What you need to do is take action step by step. Remember Wright Brother who invented airplane. They have dream to fly but in the beginning they don’t know how. but they keep try and try till they success. So I think if you want to get involve in education business you need to join education company and learn how they run the business.

				ANSWER:
Out of personal experience, I would say to wait until you are married. Parenting is tough, and in my case single parenting is worse. Lots of couples break up after 6 or 10 years. Just wait until you are fully committed. There’s no rush and enjoy being by yourselves, your career and school life, just your personal life period. Because once a baby is involved, it not just about you anymore.

4) To cathrl69: I’m really only asking out of curiosity. I just think about it a lot, and I wonder what people would think. It’s just a way for me to gain a little perspective in my life. As for your comment about me planning my parenting style, etc., I do see your point, and I agree to some extent. However, I just see it as my ideal. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with planning my goals as a parent – I realize that every child is different and things don’t always work out as planned, but I’ve learned a lot about the advantages of certain parenting styles (etc.), and I think it’s a great idea to keep those in mind – why not at least try for what seems best to me? Thanks for answering! :]
6) To cathrl69 again: I forgot to address your comment about money. We certainly don’t spend money we don’t have! In fact, we rarely use credit cards, and if we do, we pay the entire bill off at the end of each month – we only use them to build our credit scores! We’re very financially responsible – and frugal, too. I just mentioned his future career to add a little detail about my hopes to be a stay-at-home mom. I mentioned that it might not be possible, but that I hope it will.

				ANSWER:
1) If you DID know my situation (if you just skipped down to this question, please read what I wrote above to learn more about my situation), what would you think of my boyfriend and I having a baby? Would you think we were too young? Too inexperienced? Too irresponsible?

I would tell you to wait ( I know that you said you were going to). I have been there in the exact same situation. We were the same responsible people. The thing is the the future you have planned out so perfectly doesn’t always work like that. I had to leave school and work while pregnant because I had morning sickness so bad that I couldn’t get out of bed. My bf (now husband) had to leave to support us. Then I got pregnant again three months after my son was born (while on birth control). It took forever to get on our feet and even now its still a struggle. I stay at home and my husband has a really good job (which is lucky in todays job market) and I am also a full time student and although I never partied ( and still don’t really like to) I missed a lot of experiences that I wished I got to do. You are too young to realize all the things that you will miss when you have kids.

2) If you did NOT know my situation, what would you think? (Imagine you just saw a two people, who appeared to be about 20 and 23/24, with a baby. You knew nothing else about them.) Too young? Too inexperienced? Too irresponsible? Lol, I would probably ask if they wanted to have a playdate : )

3) How long do you think we should wait to have a baby? What would you do if you were in our situation?
I would wait 2-3 years. Really that is what I would have done.

4) Do you think we will make good parents when the time comes? I am sure you will.

5) Any other comments you’d like to make? I’d love to hear what you think! Remember that you can’t plan the future out in perfect detail because it doesn’t always work out that way with kids. Last week my son fractured his jawbone falling off a piece of playground equipment and we had to pay 0 out of pocket because the insurance wont cover it. That doesn’t include the two follow up visits and the repair of his chipped tooth. You want to wait until you are in the position to not have to worry so much about that or in the position if you want to take your child to the zoo or go out to dinner that you will be able to. As college students that just wont happen and it makes you feel horrible.

I hope this helps.

Baby Proofing Kitchens

Author: Mark Preston

Every parent wants to protect their children and many go to extreme lengths in order to make their home “baby-proof”. Kitchens are quite often the most difficult part of the home to baby proof as there are just so many things in the room that could pose potential hazards to children and babies.

The main issue here for many parents, especially those with their first child, is that babies tend to learn very quickly within their first year of life. Because of this, it can seem that one minute there is a tiny baby squirming around on the floor and now there is a little toddler crawling all over the home.

Kitchens pose many threats to children as previously mentioned. For instance, the cooker is one of the main appliances in the home that can cause a danger. Of course it is obvious that when turned on the oven can cause nasty burns to anyone that accidentally touches it in the wrong place. However, when a baby comes across it, it may seem like something extremely interesting ready to be investigated! This is quite often why, if the correct measures are not taken to protect babies in kitchens, there can be quite a number of nasty accidents.

Many home stores and supermarkets sell a lot of different items that allow people to proof their homes in order to protect their children from any accidents. One of the largest selling products at the moment is drawer clips. These clips work by blocking the drawer and only allowing it to open halfway with a catch that any adult can use to open it fully. By using these, babies and children would not be able to open the drawers in lounges and kitchens and therefore avoid any potential hazards such as knives and other sharp items.

Some people’s do pose more of a threat than others; however this can be kept under control easily with the correct measures put into place. Things such as the aforementioned drawer clips and stoppers and other items that can be purchased such as baby gates etc. are a great help for people that are looking to start baby proofing kitchens and any other rooms in their home. It is vitally important to anyone to keep their kitchens safe and things such as the stairways that can cause a threat to their children when wandering around and exploring!

			QUESTION:
how can i baby-proof cabinets that were built in the 70′s?
i have a 13 month old and he gets into everything so we’re trying to baby proof. but our house was built some time ago, and the cabinets just slide left to riight and are wooden. they have little holes to open them with but thats pretty much it. i’m not sure how to keep this closed to what child proofing tool could be used here. ALSO our living room has a huge gap, and i cant seem to find a baby gate long enough to stretch, its probably 10+ feet wide. please any ideas??

				ANSWER:
Well, first of all, the first answer was kind of mean

I think you should get some velcro and use it on the back of the “sliders” to stop it from sliding easily. Or you could get some eye hooks (like the ones some people use on screen doors).

As far as the gates, we have the same problem and I think we are going to get those really long ones. I don’t think we have many options!

Here is what I’m talking about for both …

			QUESTION:
Where can I find the best safety latches for baby proofing cabinet doors?
I bought the Wal-Mart brand and they are not very practical. I am looking for ones that are easy to install

				ANSWER:
I live in earthquake turf and we use them to keep glass and other objects from flying out of cupboards during quakes. I’ve used several different types, but have found the easiest ones to both install and operate are the ones that Lowes sells. They also aren’t as unsightly as many of the other ones and the plastic they are made out of doesn’t snap with “adult” strength pressure.

			QUESTION:
I need a replacement skeleton key for my IKEA cabinet (baby proofing)?
Hi all,
I have an IKEA TV unit with 2 glass doors and have lost the key to lock it. The TV unit is 5-6 yrs old but they still sell it at IKEA. It’s not a real key; I think it’s a skeleton key that many IKEA glass cabinets use. I have 3 glass cabinets from them, and I think I either lost or threw away all of them (thinking I’d never have a baby).

I am babyproofing my home and my 9 mo. old is slamming the door shut and I am afraid of a big accident if I don’t solve this soon. I contacted IKEA and they said they can’t help me AT ALL, no replacement parts and a big ‘sorry’ – we’re useless. I looked on ebay and just can’t find it anywhere.

Can anyone give me a clue what to do? Besides by a new t.v. unit? I have to open the cabinet to access my dvd player etc..otherwise I’d keep it duct-taped or something

Thanks!
I talked with IKEA already and they can’t help me at all. Please give other suggestions, thanks.

			QUESTION:
How to open a baby proofed cabinet?
I don’t live in the house, I’m just watching the kids, but I cfan’t get the cabinet open. I’m sure it’s baby proofed because the 18 month old used to get into it all the time, but for the life of me I can’t figure out how to open the cabinet and I really don’t want to break it. Help please .

				ANSWER:
There are some types of babyproofing devices where you open the door partway and you can see a little plastic latch. If you just push down on it, you should be able to open the door.

There are other types where there is a magnetic key (usually kept on the fridge – it should look vaguely like a mushroom or knob) that you have to hold against the door and rotate to disengage the childproof lock. The lock should be on the top corner of the cabinet opposite the hinges.

			QUESTION:
When do I need to start baby proofing my house and how do I know what all needs to be done?
My daughter is nearly 4 months old. When should I start baby proofing my house and what all should I do?? I need help! I know about the plugs for the outlets, and things to keep cabinets closed but what else should I do? We have stairs so I will need a gate for that.

Thanks moms!

				ANSWER:
I recently was wondering this same thing. I found this article that helped me out a lot.

1. Make sure that all outlets, especially those which can be reached by a baby or a toddler have outlet covers to prevent electrocution.

2. All windows should have window guards, windows stops and safety netting to make sure that your child would not be falling out of them. However, do make sure that older children and adults could easily remove these baby safety equipment to use the window as an emergency exit when needed.

3. Make sure that all of the bedrooms and the kitchen have smoke detectors installed in them.

4. Use door locks and doorknob covers to keep babies, toddlers and children out of the dangerous areas or rooms in the house such as your office, garage and bathrooms. You can use hook-and-eye latches or slide locks high on doors, to be sure that they would be out o f your child’s reach

I could only fit so much on this page. Here is the link to read more.

			QUESTION:
Can you give me some baby proofing tips?
Since my daughter is 9 months old and will be walking soon – hubby and I need to baby proof-

On my list I have:

fix mini blind cords
put locks on cabinets and drawers
gate for the kitchen

I already have covers over the electric sockets

…

What do you do with your medications- just keep them up high? I always read that you should keep them in a locked medicine cabinet-but I’ve never seen one.

Any baby proofing tips?

Thanks in advance!

Judi

				ANSWER:
I run a home daycare and am required to keep all my medicine locked up. I don’t have a locked medicine cabinet I just use a plastic tool box with a lock on it. If I didn’t have to I probably wouldn’t bother keeping it locked just as long as its up high where a child couldn’t reach it it is fine.
The only other thing you may need in the future for child proofing would be door handle covers, but you won’t need them for another year or two.

			QUESTION:
Baby-proofing!?
Last week, my six month old got up on his hands and knees and rocked back and forth for the first time, so I am finally getting around to baby-proofing the house. I have the outlet covers, door knob covers and power strip covers (which seemed like a great idea, but do not fit the powerstrip that I have behind my TV http://www.amazon.com/Mommys-Helper-Power-Strip-Safety/dp/B000056JJF ) I need to get some kind of cabinet locks, but I am not sure which kind work best. What other items do you recommend?
Yes, OBVIOUSLY I supervise my child well. I used to know a family with a little girl who had serious brain damage because she was shocked by an electrical outlet. So I just want to do everything I can to avoid an accident, including supervision AND baby-proofing.

				ANSWER:
you would want something for the door to prevent it from shutting so that little fingers do not get pinched. You can get it amazon or babies r us.

You also want to anchor cabinets to the wall because little ones like using the drawers as stepping stools and then the whole thing will come tumbling down on them.

For cabinets with pull our drawers there are a lot to choose from. It’s really just up to you what you want. No need to get fancy. Pretty much all of those, you would need to screw on. As far as cabinet doors that swing open, there are a lot to choose from also depending on your cabinet hardware.

I suggest to leave 1 or 2 drawers and not put baby proofing locks. Place things there that you don’t mind your little one playing with – like plastic containers and certain pots and pans. Your baby will love the freedom when he grows up that he is allowed to open a drawer.

Also, I do want to add that because babies have different temperaments, how far you need to baby proof is dependent on that. Some babies you say “stop. don’t play with that” and they listen and then there are others that you have to say that 100 times and they still will keep playing with it. And it doesn’t mean that you’re not supervising them, it just means that they are highly curious.

I happen to have one of those child. My son is now 3 years old and boy, was he highly active and highly curious. I’m a stay at home mom. I have baby gates, my cabinets are baby proofed, etc.

			QUESTION:
Moms….Baby proofing tips?
We are about to baby proof, Liam is trying his best to crawl. I know of the normal baby proofing like covering the outlets, proofing cabinets and drawers, etc… But what are some things that you wished you baby proofed or you didn’t know you needed to baby proof. What are some things your babies got into that surprised you?
Thanks for any tips!!!
I don’t feel infants should be kept away from everything. I reason I am asking this is because my friend’s husband twin sister was killed because a tv feel on her. I know children are curious and I know not to leave him unattended but things happen and I just wanted some tips.

				ANSWER:
Some things that we Baby proofed- and recommend baby proofing is:

Fire Place

Outlets- As you mentioned

Tuck away phone cords/wires as best as you can

Make sure the floor is vaccumed daily- Cause when there crawling they seem to find everything…LOL

Put a Gate up in the kitchen so he cant crawl in there- Unless you want to baby proof cabinets and such.

We also moved the Coffee Table because once our Daughter started to crawl she would hit her head on it and we decided it was best if it went for a while…

Hope Ive helped!!!!!!!

Baby Strollers Car Seats Decorating The Nursery

Author: Gordon Bengston

Just as having your first child is something that will change your life, likewise making up everything for the infant from the initial day of his or her life is a challenge that takes time and energy. At first you might not be able to determine what you intend to do for the child that would be truly unusual. You will probably want a distinct room for the childyoungster, keep them in every luxury possible and decorate the room in such a way that no other youngster will have such a room. I know, that it is your son or daughter and to you nobody is more special than your son or daughter. Consequently it becomes a very unhappy aspect for you when you’re in a circumstance where cash is not that plentiful but you also want to do the best for your son or daughter. For this reason we have come up with the a€œdecorate the baby’s room when your finances are tighta€ plan that will assist you fulfill your needs.

The first matter that you will need to do is select a fashion in which you want to decorate the room. If you are aware of the sex of your child then it is easy enough, nevertheless, if you are expecting some surprise then there are numerous other options to choose from. To decorate the baby’s room when your funds are small you can pick from a wide range of topics for your baby. You can transform the nursery into a forest or a lake or a sun filled meadow even though one of the big consequences that you face is space because you just won’t know what furniture you will need to buy. But I would say: buy only those objects that are wholly necessary for the son or daughter like a bed, a cradle, and a stroller etc., and do not purchase a huge cupboard or objects that the child cannot use.

Ensure that the areas are designed in keeping with the theme that you have chosen for your baby. If you continue in this fashion then you will find that decorating the nursery even with a tiny amount of money can be fascinating. To me, the paint color in the room and the furnishings are the best area and the only one which highlights the ultimate effect.

To add the winding up touch you can incorporate mirrors and lamps, rugs with letters and numbers on them etc., so that along with play your son or daughter can learn early on. Many of these objects are also seen in a sales event so if you look then you will for certain get what you want. The final essential matter that I want to talk about is to get the father of the son or daughter engaged at any cost because he should be part of what feels to be a father. When you can produce a infant then you must recognize how to look after them. Of course it will be a learning experience for him so do take him along and do not trouble yourself about the decoration of the nursery even if your budget is low.

You can even go with Walmart online, b/c online they have several car seats taht aren’t offered in stores for cheaper than at other places. Amazon and eBay are ok, too, as long as the seat is brand new, with tags attached to the harness.
sign up with ebates.com for discount at babyuniverse, and check out fatwallet’s site, they offer discounts at different stores, too. Most of the places above offer free shipping as well. And depending upon your child’s current age and size, if your’e in the market for a Britax convertible seat, they’re on sale right now. QUESTION:
Where should the baby safety car seat be located, middle or sides of the car, when facing front?

				ANSWER:
The middle is safest by far… but having said that, you can put the baby in any position you wish so long as there is an anchor point to attach the seat to.

When i had one baby she went in the middle forward facing but on the side when rearfacing due to issues with the size of the car.

When i had two kids the baby was on the side the whole time as well as the older child who was also in a car seat still.

When i had three kids the newborn capsule went on the side as its hard to get it in the car when its in the middle, but when he went forward facing he went in the middle, with the two older ones in car seats on the sides

			QUESTION:
Baby Car Seat Safety – older vehicles? install teather latch?
I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van

I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada

				ANSWER:
In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.

Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.

Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

			QUESTION:
where do you find reviews on the safety of car seats and other baby products?

				ANSWER:
Hi! Here is a link to Consumer Reports Infant car seat products.. you don’t need to be a member for this part

http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/baby-toddler/car-seats/infant-car-seat-ratings/ratings-overview.htm

For other baby products, I google the name of the product + safety test.

Also, check the reviews on Amazon, Target, Babies R Us… they aren’t “official” but they’ll give you a good idea about how the product functions and if other moms like it.

				ANSWER:
Tip 1. Securing your child car safety seat Always install the seat tightly, using your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1″) of movement of the seat from side to side or forward. Each time you place your child in the car safety seat, give it a tug to make sure it is still secure

Tip 2. Using tether straps with forward-facing car seats
The tether strap for a forward-facing child car safety seat must be used. The tether strap is located on the rear of the child car safety seat and has a hook. The hook is designed to attach the strap to the tether anchorage on the vehicle as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Ensure the tether is only secured to the designated anchorage point(s) in the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.

Tip 3. Using Universal Anchorage System (UAS) / LATCH
All new Canadian vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2002 come with lower universal anchorage points. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual before using the UAS system/LATCH to determine where the anchorage points are located and ensure that the correct method is used as advised by the car seat manufacturer.

Tip 5. Using harness slots
Your child car safety seat’s harness straps must be positioned correctly by ensuring they pass through the correct slots.

Rear-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or below the child’s shoulders.
Forward-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or above the child’s shoulders.

Tip 6. Securing your child in the harness
Ensure that the harness system is snug enough on your child’s chest to allow only one finger width between the strap and the child’s collarbone.

Tip 7. Positioning your harness straps
Ensure that harness straps lie flat and they do not twist or fold. Harnesses need to be straightened out each time the child is secured in the seat.

Tip 8. Adjusting chest clips
Properly adjust the chest clips on the harness. They should lie flat against the chest and be positioned at armpit level.

Tip 9. Installing away from active air bags
Always install child car safety seats away from active air bags. The safest place is in the back seat of a passenger car, sport utility vehicle or light truck and either the second or third row in a mini-van.

Tip 10. Installing your rear-facing child car safety seat on a proper angle

Most child car safety seats have a recline position that must be used when in the rear-facing position for an infant (up to 9kg or 20lbs). Check your child car safety seat owner’s manual for instructions. For rear-facing seats, if necessary, use a tightly rolled towel or a foam bar (pool noodle) under the base of the child car safety seat to adjust the angle to 45 degrees. A forward-facing child car safety seat should be in the upright position. Make sure that when the seat is turned from rear-facing to forward-facing, the recline feature is adjusted to the upright position.

			QUESTION:
Baby Car Seats Crash Test Information?
Newborn and Baby
Consumer Reports Magazine Crash test worries

In its February 2007 issue, Consumer Reports magazine reported on crash tests it performed to test the safety of car seats. The results were not encouraging.

Most of the infant car seats tested by Consumer Reports “failed disastrously” in crashes at speeds as low as 56 km/h. The seats came off their bases or twisted in place, the report said. In one case, a test dummy was hurled more than nine metres.

Of the 12 car seats tested, Consumer Reports said it could recommend only two, and it urged a U.S. federal recall of the poorest performing seat, the Evenflo Discovery, which is not sold in Canada.

All the car seats passed U.S. standards — but Consumer Reports argues those standards should be raised.

To be sold in Canada and the United States, an infant seat must perform adequately in a 48 km/h frontal crash, and Consumer Reports found that all but the Discovery did so. But it noted that the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) conducts its crash tests for new cars at higher speeds — 56 km/h for frontal crashes and 61 km/h for side crashes — so the magazine tested the seats at those speeds.

“It’s unconscionable that infant seats, which are designed to protect the most vulnerable children, aren’t routinely tested the same as new cars,” said Consumer Reports’ Don Mays, a product safety director.

The only seats that passed all the tests were the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS — expanded polystyrene foam — both selling for about US. Consumer Reports urged parents shopping for seats to buy one of those two, but it also noted that “any child car seat is better than no seat at all.”

It also said some seats performed better when attached by vehicle safety belts than when attached with the LATCH system. The system, which stands for Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children, includes belts that hook the base of a car seat to metal anchors in the vehicle.

Consumer Report Article
On January 4, 2007, Consumer Reports published a safety alert in the U.S. claiming that most infant car seats failed their new front- and side-crash evaluation tests. The report also claims that of 12 seats tested, only two performed well: the Baby Trend Flex-Loc and the Graco SnugRide with EPS (i.e., expanded polystyrene). Only six of the twelve infant car seat models chosen by Consumer Reports for this testing are officially certified for and marketed in Canada. They are: the Graco SnugRide; the Peg-Perego Primo Viaggio SIP; the Evenflo Embrace V; the Graco SafeSeat; the Safety 1st Designer 22; and the Combi Centre ST.
Transport Canada wants to reassure the Canadian travelling public that the Department’s collision investigations and data analyses do not support the results obtained by Consumer Reports. When car seats are used correctly, they perform effectively in motor vehicle collisions and child occupants are afforded optimum protection.

The Department takes the safety of children travelling in vehicles very seriously and is continually working to improve crash protection for children through research, development and enforcement of safety regulations, participation in various national and international committees that work on policy development, and public awareness campaigns.

two boosters and a baby car seat in a medium sized car?
I need to fit three kids car seats into my peugeot 307 (two boosters and a baby seat). The problem is that their combined width is greater than the width of the back seat.I have looked around, but most seats seem to be of similiar width.Does anyone know of a slimline range of safety seats?
I really don’t want to buy a new car to solve this temporary problem
its not really the seat part which causes the problem, more the styling wings, arms and cup holders which makes the whole thing too wide to fit across a normal car seat. The only solution seems to buy a van like people carrier which are wider than a standard car. There must be a better solution

Baby High Chair Features

Author: Ray Subs

The baby high chairs of today are equipped with more features than the more traditional models. Where high chairs were once made exclusively of wood, the newer models are now made of tough plastics that are made to withstand years of use and that contain many useful features.

Safety is the most important consideration when purchasing a baby high chair. While babies generally don’t need high chairs until they are able to east solid foods, which is usually at about six months of age, some parents choose to buy them sooner. One advantage of doing this is to have a place for baby to rest while one or more family members are in the ding room or kitchen. Another reason is so that babies can be present during all the action of family meals.

When purchasing a baby high chair, you will find many features from which to choose. You can buy a simple high chair with a locking tray and safety belt designed to keep baby buckled in and safe at all times, or may even wish to choose a model that contains features such as height adjustment and wheels.

If you eat some of your meals in the kitchen and others in the ding room, wheels will be very useful and will make the chair much easier to transport. Height adjustment is useful as baby grows.

Stability is another very important feature. You want to know your baby high chair won’t turn over with baby in it. For this purpose, a wide base and low center of gravity are crucial. When actually choosing the chair, give each model a good shake and imagine how it might stand up to a wiggling baby. Another consideration is whether or not it can easily be reached under when it is necessary to pick up cereal, carrots and other flung favorites.

Also, check wheels and locking mechanisms. A wheeled high chair should have strong locks on the wheels to prevent accidents from occurring and to keep you from chasing the chair across the room when baby gets excited.

Compare the features of all high chairs you consider. Know those you desire before shopping so you will be able to make an accurate comparison. Don’t choose a chair just because of its cost. Remember, there is no price on the safety of your baby.

			QUESTION:
At what age can a child use a booster seat (without a safety belt) and stop using the high chair?
We’re expecting another baby, and I’m hoping we won’t have to fit another high chair in our apartment! By the time Baby 2 is old enough to start solids, our firstborn will be 22 months old. What has been your experience?

				ANSWER:
I think at that age your little one will be fine in a booster. My daughter was 2 in one. Also if you think about it, your new baby won’t need a high chair right away anyways, so your first one will be able to use it probably till after 2 years old (depending on when you start solids). We just used a bouncy seat in the beginning.

			QUESTION:
If I say “Drive Baby Drive” does that mean to take off you seat belt and drive 150 miles per hour?
Because when I hear this “drill baby drill” comments…..it doesn’t mean disregard all laws and safety regulations while looking for oil and trying to become more independent from foreign oil. BP screwed up on their own and didn’t have anything to do with the Bush admin.. If it did, Didn’t Obama have ample time to fix it. Do liberals remember how high gas prices were and how much you were complaining? That’s why we were drilling.

				ANSWER:
To the oil industry, yes!

BP disregarded all safety regulations and it’s been revealed through committee hearings and interviews with workers from the rig.

Drill Baby Drill meant that it was safe to go 5,000 down in the water, clearly it was not. Bush appointees from MMS never bothered to read the BP drilling proposal – it included a dead man and phone numbers that did not work.

The best way to drill a primary well is to drill a relief well at the same time.

Now we know what wasn’t discussed at Dick Cheney’s secret meeting with the oil industry – safety and containment.

			QUESTION:
why arent baby capsules in the U.S. made to be secured properly?
in Australia where the baby safety capsule (seat) was invented for carrying babies in cars, the capsule is secured not only by the regular seat belt or lap sash but also by a strap connected to the top of the device & secured to the rear deck of the car or hook in the rear ceiling of suv’s. this makes for a very secure restraint. but here in the U.S., when my son was born i found that all that is required is is the LATCH system that only uses a strap that secures the base of the capsule. i found this to be very difficult to secure properly & the thing can still be moved however slightly in an upward tilting movement. why have we adopted & then changed a pefectly good system to make it less secure.
by the way, the local police department & the nurse at the hospital assured me the capsule was fitted correctly & securely.

				ANSWER:
A rear facing infant seat is designed to wobble in an accident. In a bad crash, the seat can close up like a clamshell. This absorbs some of the force of the accident. Check out the NHTSA (National Highway and Traffic Safety Administration) website for more on car seats. Don’t worry about the slight movement. As long as the seat doesn’t move more than an inch at the base where it’s secured, it is safe.

			Baby fall off from rocker?
My 8 months baby fell off from baby rocker, cried for sometimes then fell asleep. I read that when there is concussion, they will feel sleepy, but I am not sure the sleepiness is due to concussion or tired because he just had a cry?

I had always been careful not to let baby fall as he is crawling now. Nevertheless thing still happen. I put him on rocker with safety belt tied, then went away a while to get house chores done, then I heard a loud thud and he was already flat on the ceramic floor with face facing upwards. This had never happen before. I do not know exactly know he fell, and not sure did he hit his head. QUESTION:
What is a baby basket on a plane?
One of the airlines I’m considering for a long flight to Europe offers baby baskets. This is a description from their website:

Baby basket

The baby basket is fastened to the wall of the aircraft or placed on the floor in the legroom during the flight. The child can sleep and lie down in the basket during the flight with the cover zipped up. During take-off, landing and turbulence, the infant sits on the lap of an adult with a separate safety belt fastened. The adult is allowed to have only one infant sitting on his/her lap. The maximum inner length of the baby basket is 70 cm and the infant using the basket may not weigh more than 11 kg or 24 lbs.

Have you ever used one? Where are they on the plane and how does that actually work? The airline doesn’t mention extra charge; did you have to pay for it though?
thanks

				ANSWER:
I saw one of these on my trip to Japan about 2 years ago. It is just a small bassinet type thing. The couple that was using it sat in the first row in our cabin and were able to fasten it to the wall right in front of them. It takes up some leg room for sure but is probably better than having to hold the baby for a solid 10 hours or however long the flight is.

I need a seatbelt sown smaller! Is It Illegal? for baby capsule?
hi there

i have a baby capsule and it has a seatbelt that goes around the unit and clicks into the safety latch. the belt is too long and i cant get it tight enough to hold the capsule still….

Yes, they should be able to do it with no problem. The belt isn’t holding back an adult, so normal stitching like what is done on the belt ends is more than sufficient.

			QUESTION:
Do you wear your seat belt?
Do you wear your seat belt? If so, please explain.
If you don’t, please explain why and take a look at this.

I wear my seat belt everywhere I go. I’m part of my high school’s SADD/MADD program. We work to pass laws and educate people about seat belt safety. In one particular mock car roll, a dummy father, mother, and kid were put into a car. The machine stimulated a roll over at about 15 mph. With the seat belts on, the dummies were not harmed. When the instructor took the seat belts off, the ending was wicked gross. The dummies flew around in the car, ending with the baby in the trunk and the parents in the back seat. Then, the windows were opened. The dummies were thrown from the car.

Seat belts do save lives. Don’t care what you say, it’s 100% TRUE.

Seat belts focus on areas of the body, like your hips and shoulders.
When put on correctly, they prevent you from smashing forward and being thrown from your seat, during an accident.

Seat belts weren’t made to be comfortable. Get over it.

Now, please tell me: Do you wear your seat belt? How come?

				ANSWER:
Your statistics are all correct. The chances of surviving in an accident increase dramatically if you are wearing a seat belt. How about this. You go off a bridge and drop 75 and hit nose first into the water do you want to have a seat belt on? Yes!!! The first thing your car does when it hits the water is…. Anyone, Bueler, Bueler? It stops. Your body is still going say 50 mph. You hit the steering wheel and are knocked out and drown. If you have on your belt at least you have a fighting chance to get out of car.
Never drive without them.
90% of all traffic accidents happen within 25 miles of home and at speed less than 40 mph. So… Move.

Baby Slings And Your Baby's Safety

Author: Nail Yener

Positional asphyxia or suffocation tends to happen to babies when their chin is tightly pressed against their chest. This position restricts airflow which can then cause suffocation. This often happens when the baby is put on a sling that is why parents or anyone who uses baby slings should take the necessary precaution when using baby slings. Before you head out the door, you have to check that your baby’s airway is clear and that there is no obstruction. Observe your baby’s regular breathing, even when he or she is sleeping in your sling.

Here are other safety measures that you need to take before you put your baby in a sling:

Baby slings are often made of sturdy materials to support the weight of your baby. But you should never be too complacent. You have to constantly check your baby sling for any sign of wear or damage before you put your baby in it. If you see any tear or damage and you get dubious as to whether you are still going to use it, don’t. Never put your child’s safety at risk.

Before you get started in wearing your baby sling, read the enclosed manual or instructions. If your carrier comes with an instructional video, watch it before trying out the sling. Whenever possible, you can ask the sales clerk to demonstrate how to properly wear the baby sling so that you’ll not be left clueless on how you should wear it.

If you will board a moving vehicle, remove your baby from your sling. These contraptions are not approved as safety seats and therefore should not be worn as alternate to baby carriers used for vehicles.

When you are around or near any mechanical equipment, take extra caution. The tail of your baby sling could get caught on the machine.

When you are wearing your sling, do not get too near open flames. The fabric that is often used in baby slings is not flame resistant as they are often made from materials that are comfortable for babies. This also goes to say that you should never wear baby slings when you are cooking or when you are holding hot beverage in your hand.

Never engage yourself in very rigorous activity when you are wearing your baby sling. You should not run, bike, jog or hike when you are wearing your baby in a sling. If you plan to bring your baby during these activities, try to use strollers or backpack baby carriers instead. Your baby will be safer that way.

			QUESTION:
important info re: infantino brand slings!!!?
(CBS) The popularity of baby slings has been on the rise over the past four years.

But, reports “Early Show” Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen, the Consumer Product Safety Commission says two slings are considered so dangerous they’re being pulled from the market, and parents are being told to stop using them.

Earlier this month, “The Early Show” broke the news that federal regulators were warning of possible suffocation hazards posed by baby slings — which parents put around their necks and carry their babies in.

Now, the CPSC has announced the voluntary recall of one million slings made by Infantino.

The Sling Rider and the Wendy Bellissimo are being pulled because they pose a suffocation risk, Koeppen says.

Asked by Koeppen how quickly a child could suffocate in “one these slings,” CPSC Chairman Inez Tenenbaum responded, “In a matter of minutes.”

Tenenbaum says three children died in Infantino slings last year alone.

“You might have your baby in a sling next to you and not notice that the baby has gone into (a) position (in which he or she) cannot breathe” until it’s too late, Tenenbaum added.

That, notes Koeppen, is exactly what happened to seven-day-old Derrik Fowler during a shopping trip with his mother, Lisa Cochran.

She’d been carrying her newborn in a sling made by Infantino. “By the time I got to the car and pulled him out of the sling to put him in his car seat, he was no longer of normal color,” Cochran recalls.

Infants younger than four months are at greatest risk in slings, Koeppen points out, because their weak neck muscles mean they have no head control. An infant can curl into a “C”-shape, with the chin falling into the chest — restricting the baby’s airway.

There are no federal or voluntary safety standards for infant slings.

In a statement, Infantino says, “Safety is our No. 1 concern,” adding it “has also been working closely with the CPSC and other agencies … to develop safety standards for baby slings.”

But, observes Koeppen, that’s of little consolation to mothers such as Cochran, who says, “As a first-time mom, I had no clue I could walk into a store and pick something off the shelf that wasn’t safe.”

Consumers are being advised to stop using the recalled Infantino baby slings immediately and contact the company for a free replacement product.

To get it, take the tags off your recalled sling and send the tags to Infantiono, Koeppen says, adding, “There are three different products that you could get in return. You have a choice. There is a shopping cart carrier. There is a different type of baby carrier. There’s also an activity gym that you can receive for free.”

As for baby slings not included in the recall, Koeppen repeated parent sholdn’t use them if their infant is less than four months old.

The CPSC, Koeppen says, is also looking at all baby slings, investigating them — the ones that are on the market currently — and will be working toward mandatory federal safety standards.

				ANSWER:
What I find amazing is the fact that they were saying this 2 years ago and it took this long for the companies to get in trouble with it and have to recall them. When I looked into infant carriers for my daughter in 2008 they had this information out THEN.

There are so many other warnings that people ignore right now. Don’t use a car seat on a shopping cart. Don’t use a car seat as anything BUT a car seat (don’t use it on strollers, don’t use it as a feeding chair, a rocker…) and don’t let the baby sleep in it. Lay newborn – 4 month olds flat in their stroller (and make sure the stroller can lay flat.)

Meanwhile I’m just waiting for someone to look at my baby Ergo carrier and say “You know, they say those are dangerous” because they’ll think sling = any baby carrying device.

			QUESTION:
Should the government legislate the size and shape of a hot dog?
Yes this is a serious question believe it or not.

******************************************************************
Pediatricians call for a choke-proof hot dog

Nutritionists have long warned of the perils of hot dogs: fat, sodium and preservatives to name a few.

Now, the American Academy of Pediatrics wants foods like hot dogs to come with a warning label — not because of their nutritional risks but because they pose a choking hazard to babies and children.

Better yet, the academy would like to see foods such as hot dogs “redesigned” so their size, shape and texture make them less likely to lodge in a youngster’s throat. More than 10,000 children under 14 go to the emergency room each year after choking on food, and up to 77 die, says the new policy statement, published online today in Pediatrics. About 17% of food-related asphyxiations are caused by hot dogs.

“If you were to take the best engineers in the world and try to design the perfect plug for a child’s airway, it would be a hot dog,” says statement author Gary Smith, director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Nationwide Children’s Hospital in Columbus, Ohio. “I’m a pediatric emergency doctor, and to try to get them out once they’re wedged in, it’s almost impossible.”

The Consumer Product Safety Commission requires labels on toys with small parts alerting people not to give them to kids under 3. Yet there are no required warnings on food, though more than half of non-fatal choking episodes involve food, Smith says.

“No parents can watch all of their kids 100% of the time,” Smith says. “The best way to protect kids is to design these risks out of existence.”

Though Smith says he doesn’t know exactly how someone would redesign a hot dog, he’s certain that some savvy inventor will find a way.

Janet Riley, president of the National Hot Dog & Sausage Council, supports the academy’s call to better educate parents and caregivers about choking prevention. “Ensuring the safety of the foods we service to children is critically important for us,” Riley says.

But Riley questions whether warning labels are needed. She notes that more than half of hot dogs sold in stores already have choking-prevention tips on their packages, advising parents to cut them into small pieces. “As a mother who has fed toddlers cylindrical foods like grapes, bananas, hot dogs and carrots, I ‘redesigned’ them in my kitchen by cutting them with a paring knife until my children were old enough to manage on their own,” Riley says.

The Food and Drug Administration, which has authority to recall products it considers “unfit for food,” plans to review the new statement, spokeswoman Rita Chappelle says.

Given the health risks of obesity, pediatrician Alan Greene, author of Feeding Baby Green, says, “The last thing we need is to redesign candy and junk food with cool shapes, so we can give them to kids even younger.”

				ANSWER:
No if parents taught their kids to chew, and when they are real little cut them up everything would be okay. Government is treading on the sacred food with this, stay away from Apple Pie and hot dogs as they already got Chevy
