This is coming from experience because no one even told me to take any of those things for myself. My poor husband was always having to run to the store for extra things.
  
  I would suggest bringing something to keep all the paperwork in. You will have lots and it’s so easy to just put them in one place so you aren’t worried about losing or forgetting them.

I have a friend and we have been friends for about 9 years. She and her husband are the Godparents of my children and have always been so amazing to them.
She has a baby who will be 1 this month. When her daughter was about 3 months she left her in the car and went into Walmart for a “minute”. She also went to a friends house and left her daughter in the car sleeping, she said hat she didn’t want to wake her up.
Her husband also told me that a few weeks ago after Church they were going home to change and she asked her husband if it would be ok to leave their daughter in the car while they went in and changed…
I am having a hard time being friends with someone like this. I truly feel uneasy and i worry about her daughters safety. When she was 6 months old she was left in her carseat on the table unbuckled and fell out.
Any ideal on how to handle this situation and what to do?
I also want to add that I have told her that it is not the right thing to do. She seems to be so relaxed about the whole thing.

I have my crib, mattress pads (2), bedding, boppy, dresser, socks(to many to count), a few hats, way to many clothes!!!, blankets (6), diaper bags (2), some shoes, car seat and stroller, bouncy seat, diapers (Size 1 and 2), several boxes of wipes, grooming kit with thermometers, butt-paste and Vaseline, way too much baby shampoos and lotions, baby laundry detergent, bathtub, tow ls(2), wash-clothes (6), bibs(10), receiving blankets (20), a “bobo” bunny, hand sanitizer, safety q-tips, bottles (9), dishwasher nipple holder, drying rack… and i think thats all am i missing anything you think helps out?

i went to the supermaket the other day and bought factor 30 sunblock for LO, but i got a normal peoples one and not the ‘specially formulated’ one for babies and kids.

BTW she can take the sun quite well (considering he dad has fair and freckly scottish skin, lol). i’m darker skinned and tan quite well without burning, so she seems a good mix of both. we always keep a hat on and make sure she has a shady spot to sit in. so whats the point in forking out the extra cash?
ahh, now, see, LO’s skin isn’t that sensitive. she hardly ever gets nappy rash (apart from when she’s teething bad) and i can get away with changing her nappy only a couple of times, (maybe 3 or 4 depending) per day as her skin can take it.

also i use and oxy-style stain remover on her nappies with no reaction from her little botty!
i use a special fabric softener as well though

she’s a tough little thing!

However past a certain weight, it is definitely preferable to use a buggy. Strollers are ideal for going on holidays as they are the lightest pushchairs available -so that’s especially good for public transport. If you’re mostly going to use a car, then a good idea is to go for a baby travel system which includes a detachable baby car seat to a pushchair base. For other baby car accessories, Hello Baby advises having a look at Sunshine Kids line of products -which are pretty functional.

Be prepared for all baby needs (critical point!)
So now that you can actually transport your baby, you obviously have to worry about how to keep him/ her happy. Without oversimplifying babies, I would sum up the problem in 4 words: food-potty-goodie-nap. So first, it is always helpful to have some of his favourite snacks and plenty of water or some milk at hand (perhaps involving a bottle insulator), together with some toys that particularly retain his attention and interest. As for the toiletry issue: of course nappies are not to be forgotten (in which case a baby changing mat could help) but from the age of 9-10 months, a travel potty is just *indispensable*. Nap time is important, so try not to go on too long a day out. Also different baby travel cots exist that are easily transportable and can provide your baby with a cosy place to sleep when on holidays.

Adapt your rhythm to your baby’s
If you’re going on a day out, remember that too many sounds and sights may be slightly overwhelming for your little toddler, hence it is good to adapt your rhythm to your kid’s.

Obviously I have all the gates and plug covers, drawer and cupboard locks…but baby is only just 6 months and just started crawling in the last 2 days..her 4 year old sister is constantly leaving teeny tiny toys around the floor and of course the baby is going straight for them…I pick up all the time but now and then I see something I missed…today it was beads and some kids jewelry…I have explained a million times to my 4 year old what could happen if baby gets any small toys… I have given her special boxes and banned her from beading in the living room but while I am doing something else she is leaving comics which the baby grabs and chews and worries me sick! What can I do short of banning all toys from the living room…I dont want my eldest to feel like I am pushing her out.

Also if she does leave a toy out don’t pick it up yourself, bring her in the room to pick it up and put it away. And when you feel that this isn’t working then show her what happens to toys she doesn’t put away. Put something aside and tell her this is where toys go when she doesn’t put them away like mommy asks and tell her she won’t get them back until she proves that she can put her other toys away or she can get them back in a certain time frame.   One suggestion though, as far as clothes go, bring with you a newborn outfit to the hospital just in case. I didn’t have one and had to ask my sister to get one! my baby was much smaller than I had expected and all the 0-3month clothing was huge on her! My favorite brand of clothes is carters and miniwear and koala baby (both from babies r us). Also best brand for breastmilk storage bags is lansinoh.

How to babyproof narrow kitchen drawers?
They are about 3 inches in height, and I cannot possible screw in any latch. Besides emptying them out, I still wonder if there is any way to install some lock that will keep them closed and prevent pinching baby’s fingers. Are there any instruments for drilling in such narrow spaces?
Also, do you think it will be safer to keep chemicals in top kitchen drawers locked with safety latch ( but the child still can climb on the counter to get there) or in the top closet shelf which is about 5 feet high from the floor and with no climbing place around?

  if the handles are wide enough for you to actually put your fingers behind to pull the drawer out you can stick a mixing spoon in the handle and “lock” several drawers at once. I ran out of cabinet locks and did this for my pots and pans cabinet for months. I ran a spoon through the handles and just left it there.
  
  put the chemicals in the top cabinet with a latch. My 2 year old would find a way to get in the closet and get them.

What do you do for a child who is just too smart?
My son is 13 months, and his is an evil genius. We put up a baby gate. Within a week he could get down. We put those baby locks on cupboard and drawers that you have to push down to open. He figured that out by the end of the day. And the velcro straps we put on the fridge? He managed to slide a broomhandle underneath and open it anyway! He knows how to pull out the electrical outlet covers, too. He even climbed onto the table! First he got onto the chair, then the table, and he was just sitting there, laughing, deviently. When I went to go grab him, he climbed down like a monkey. He knows how to undo his highchair.

I’m getting concerned. He has successfully defeated all safety measures I put up in my house. I mean, it’s great that he has such good motor skills, but what am i going to do? I’m getting very tired of picking up tupperware and towels, and finding those damn plug covers.

I try to engage him. Paint, blocks, books, outside, toy cars, educational DVDs ( I know, bad mommy) but as soon as I start doing something, like cooking, or folding clothes, or just going into another room to grab something, there he is, acting three times his age. What to do?

I tell him why, he says no.
At which point I take him to his room, and he uses his dresser as stairs. So I put him in his crib. ANd he climbs out of it. After that, he’s usually good as gold for a few hours. Its like he’s testing me to see if I will say the same thing every time.

  My kids were the same way. The way I saw it was that the safety latches and covers were there as a reminder for them not to touch, not something that they couldn’t get through it they tried. You need to teach him that it is not okay to take the outlet covers off or climb on the table or take down the baby gate. Give him a stern, “no touch” command whenever he touches something that is off limits. Remove him from the area and give him something else to do/play with. Make sure you keep your eye on him so you catch him before he gets into stuff, and tell him no. Also, try not to leave him unattended until he knows not to touch those things. Have him sit in front of you when you are folding laundry and play with a few towels. Take him with you when you have to go to another room to get something. Put him in his high chair with a snack or a toy while you are cooking dinner. Talk to him and sing to him while you cook.
  
  My 2yo could take off every door knob cover in the house, unlock the door and and be off into the wild world if he wanted too, but when he reaches up and sees the doorknob cover, it reminds him, “oh yeah, I’m not supposed to open that.”

  @Charm…What about the cabinets with glass in them, or the drawers with knives, or the electrical sockets? You need to teach them that some things are off limits for their own safety. In my house we simply do not have enough high cabinets to put every single unsafe item out of reach. My kids know that even though they can get the latches open, they are not to do so.
  
  We do not have latches on the cabinets with the Tupperware of pots and pans, btw, only the unsafe items.

  It is simply not safe to have a child on the floor in the kitchen while you are cooking. What if you drop a knife, spill hot water, have a grease splatter? He needs to be in a high chair, for his safety, not as punishment.

A baby safety shower is in keeping with these old communitarian traditions.

It’s more than just fun and games, it’s really a learning experience for the whole community where all the activities revolve around baby and home safety.

Parents and caregivers certainly have a great time, but they also leave with a higher awareness of ways to keep their new babies safe at home.

The shower’s theme may focus on a variety of safety issues (see the Baby Safety Checklist below), including child-proofing one’s home, nutrition or health.

Also, you can arrange a baby safety shower for as many people as you can fit in your party space.

At bigger safety showers, all of the moms and dads in attendance — not just the couple being honored — can visit a variety of exhibits where safety-savvy parents illustrate home safety information with games, puzzles, songs, prizes, and other activities.

At smaller showers, it might work better to have one person lead the group in discussions and safety games.

BABY SAFETY CHECKLIST

The guidelines below were developed by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.

It’s important to remember that, while these standards are based on sound principles, certain parents may disagree with some of them.

For example, the bedroom guidelines state that a baby should never sleep in the same bed as an adult.

However, from the Attachment Parenting perspective, sleeping with one’s baby is considered an important aspect of bonding and is even believed to possibly lower the incidence of SIDS.

Therefore, I recommend using the following guidelines as just that, guidelines, which should be examined carefully in light of your own views and beliefs about baby care giving.

Always consult your pediatrician if in doubt of the best way to proceed.

In the bedroom:

Put your baby to sleep on her back in a crib with a firm, flat mattress and no soft bedding underneath her.

Follow this advice to reduce the risk of suffocation and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).

To prevent suffocation, never put babies to sleep on adult beds.

Make sure your baby’s crib is sturdy and has no loose or missing hardware.

This will prevent babies suffocating or strangling by becoming trapped between broken crib parts.

Never place your baby’s crib or furniture near window blind or curtain cords.

This will prevent babies from strangling on the loop of the cord.

To prevent falls, keep children away from windows.
In the bathroom:

Keep medicines and cleaning products in containers with safety caps and locked away from children.

This will prevent children from being poisoned.

Always check bath water temperature with your wrist or elbow before putting your baby in to bathe.

This will prevent burns to a baby’s delicate skin.

Never, ever, leave your child alone in the bathtub or near any water.

This will prevent children from drowning.

In addition, keep children away from all standing water, including water in toilets, 5-gallon buckets, and pools.
In the kitchen:

Don’t leave your baby alone in a highchair; always use all safety straps.

This will prevent injuries and deaths from the baby climbing out, falling, or sliding under the tray.

Be sure to use safety straps in strollers and baby swings.

Use your stove’s back burners and keep pot handles turned to the back of the stove.

This will prevent deaths and injuries from burns.

In addition, keep children away from tablecloths, so they can’t pull down hot foods or liquids on themselves.

Lock household cleaning products, knives, matches, and plastic bags away from children.

This will prevent poisonings, bleeding injuries, burns, and suffocation.
In other living areas:

Install smoke detectors on each floor of your home, especially near sleeping areas; change the batteries each year.

This will prevent deaths and injuries from fires.

Use safety gates to block stairways and safety plugs to cover electrical outlets.

This will prevent injuries from falls and electric shocks.

Keep all small objects, including tiny toys and balloons, away from young children.

This will prevent choking and possible death.

  If you’re talking highchairs, Peg Perego is great. If you’re talking a bouncy chair, which I think you are. Kids shouldn’t be in one after they learn to sit, it’s dangerous. Try putting him in his excersaucer, or if he doesn’t have one, that would be a good investment. Otherwise, put him in a play yard where he can’t escape from, but can move around safely

How to get mildew out of safety straps for a carseat?
I am having a baby in about 3 weeks and got the carseat out of storage. I noticed that it had a bit of mildew on the straps. It was likely put away without being cleaned by my husband. So I am wondering what will take out the mildew. The straps are a golden tan color and they are Graco. Thanks for any help!

  While you *can* clean the straps off to a degree… you are not supposed to immerse them in liquid because it can weaken them and put your child at risk. With mildew… I really wouldn’t be happy with just a surface cleaning.
  
  If the seat itself is not expired you can contact Graco with the model number and other info and purchase a new set of straps. That would really be your best option for maximum safety at minimal cost.

I’m trying to stop my little one from opening doors, and drawers. I have the brand safety first, using their cabinet

  I believe I have the same kind of cabinet locks and you are supposed to screw them in. The adhesive tape on them is so they stay in place while you screw them into the cabinet.
  
  If you have cabinet doors with the handle together, I suggest just getting the slide locks. They had them that looked like a U shape and you just slid the end on and then pushed buttons on the top and bottom to slide them off. I cant find them anymore though BUT now they have these ones that look like a diamond and 2 zip tie looking things that you loop through the center diamond piece… they are mommy proof too though LOL! I bought both of these at walmart.
  
  For the doors, they have door knob covers at walmart too. OR you can buy a gate and not let him or her in the kitchen and close the bathroom door…

  safety straps are compulsory by law for precisely the reasons shown in that article. I was told they are compulsory on ALL strollers, not just the ones sold since the law came into effect. I don’t know if you remember the incident where the baby drowned because a stroller rolled down a hill into a body of water, but that was the incident that pushed the tether strap law through.
  
  However that doesn’t stop lazy parents from not using them and it doesn’t stop stupid parents from cutting them off, and it is those parents who will end up with the dead babies.

Can you use a forward-facing car-seat without the safety tether strap thing ?
Our second car is an old pick-up with one long bench seat, simple cab. There are no anchors of any type for baby seats. We are still installing her convertible face-backwards because I read in the manual that you should never do it in the forward-facing position without the safety strap.

  check the manufacturer’s website. if they dont have them on the site to buy u may have 2 call the customer service number an see if there is any way to buy a replacement strap. If you bought this swing new I would disassemble it an take it back to the store. if you no longer have the reciept go out an buy a new one of the same thing an put the one that did not have the strap back in the box an then take it back. The store is not losing out on money an they will not be short on inventory as they will just send the defective one back to the manufacturer an get a credit for it. Hope this helps!!!

I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van

I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada

  In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.
  
  Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.
  
  Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

my husband is 22 & he has been good friends with this guy who is 19, for about 5 yrs. his friend just started working where my hubby does, the same shift, so he told my hubby, “hey i’ll drive since i have to come by your house to go to work.” so my husband said great, yesterday was the first time, now his friend lives with his girl friend (who is 17, and just had a baby 8 months ago) and her parents,

so my hubby comes home this morning and he was like their baby’s car seat is facing forward and it moves whenever he goes around a curve, i’m like what? so he said that the car seat literally raises up on one side when he goes around the curb. picture leaning on a motorcycle. and slides along the seat a little.

now i know they are young, but their daughter is 8 months old, and only weighs 14 lbs (she was a preemie) so i know it’s not suppose to be turned around facing forward yet & the fact that it moves, and moves that much. i was like did you say anything, he said i asked him about it and he said her parents put it in the car for them

okay now i’m just a nosy, very opinionated mom, and i can and will bite my tongue on stuff that is none of my business, but this is my business because if anything happens (like they wreck and that little girl dies) it’s on me cause i know better and i didn’t do anything about it, now i have no idea how in the instructions her parents missed the part about it being turned rear facing till 1 year old or a certain weight, nor do i know how they missed the part about it not having to be tight, but my husband said is leans and slides along the seat, so not safe

this is the carseat they have, i know, we gave it to them for the baby shower, and it only goes up to 32 lbs, and is meant for rear facing.
our police station installs car seats in our town, it’s where all the moms donate their old carseats to so they can give them to families that can’t afford a new one so their babies are safe in a carseat that is fairly new and still in the safe guidelines
i know i just want to shake her and say you’re a mom now, grow up and take care of your baby right. and put her safety first.

  I agree… but I think you need to just sit down and be frank with her.. tell her that her baby is not safe in that car seat and you are very concerned for her safety…tell her as a young mom you can understand the oversight (obciously you’d be lying here… pleny of young moms know the right way) and offer to show her how to do it correctly and mention if they ever got pulled over they would be cited for not having that child rear facing.
  
  If she refuses then call CPS.. seriously. It’s moms like her that give young moms a bad name.

All right…
I’m not close to any person in particular outside my safety net, which is compromised of family members only.
My SO and I are having a baby party as opposed to a shower because I hate the idea of being in a room full of females… I don’t really relate. So, testosterone will be in attendence. My fisrt question is, etiquette aside, is it wrong for my SIL and his mom to cohost so we have equal representation?

Moving on to the morbid details of choosing a guardian and back-up guardian should the horrible happen, what if my SO and I are completely disagreeing on who should raise our offspring should we both meet an untimely fate? I hate to think about it, but I’m one of those “always be prepared” kind of people.

  In answer to your first question: it is totally appropriate and probably welcome to have both sides of the family represented.
  
  As to the second question: Maybe you could each pick a guardian and then if something should happen to you whomever is in a better situation to take care of your child gets custody. You can add this provision to your will.   Get down on the floor and look at your house through the eyes of a baby! Get safety devices for plugs and doors, make sure anything they can grab won’t topple and that there isn’t anything sharp or pokey about and anything they might stick in their mouth or is breakable is moved.
  As they get older and more active you can’t hide or move everything and new things become ‘dangerous’ like climbing on chairs or the toilet or pressing the buttons on the cooker! The power of ‘NO! DON’T touch!’ comes into play then! My daughter used to tantrum over these no-go things but I found saying ‘no no no, don’t touch!’ in a low tone whilst wagging my finger works best as she is destracted from the object and loves to mimick me back, wagging her finger!

  It’s impossible to fully childproof your house, but look at anything that they would get into that they shouldn’t..
  
  -cabinets within reach
  -furniture that is lightweight (there’s childproofing so it doesn’t fall!)
  -refrigerator strap (my boys loved getting in there)
  -gates to seclude them (don’t use pressure mounts for upstairs)
  -window locks! (they start young- my 1 year old can open them)
  -plug outlets! (best to get the big kind- the plug covers are easily figured out at 2)
  -stove lock and covers (definitely a must!)

In order for us to ensure their safety when they sleep, we might want to look into purchasing a bed rail for our children. This will finally allow us to sleep without worrying about baby rolling off the bed.

What you might want to consider in purchasing a bed rail for your baby is the size of the bed. You would also have to decide which designs they will like since there are a variety of bed rails out in the market today.

There are some that are designed like hotdog pillows that add comfort to your child’s sleep. They are soft and fluffy and they have straps that allow you to attach them to your child’s bed. Some of them are inflatable even so you can bring it with you if you’re going to have a sleep-over at a family or friend’s house.   There are toddler beds which come with a built up bit along the side to prevent them falling out or you can buy a clip on side fairly cheaply. My daughter has not long ago changed over and has only fallen out 3 times. She doesnt have any rail to stop her falling out but I put her down right over the other side of the matress to try and stop her from falling out. She also has wooden floorboards so I put a line of 3 pillows running the length of the bed then put a folded duvet next to them.

Baby’s trying to climb out of his crib?
My 10-month old is trying to climb out of his crib. I found him today, halfway to the top already. When I walked in, he lost his grip and fell backwards on his butt. There is nothing in the crib he can use as a ‘step’. He just holds on to the top and climbs it like a mountaineer. Any day now, he’s gonna figure this thing out and fall on his head.
I need advice: My mother reckons I should move him to a proper bed and attach those safety rails you can find (at least he won’t fall that hard). I think he’s a little too small, and a little too active for a proper bed yet.

I knew this was bound to happen, but I didn’t expect it for a while yet.
I thought about letting him sleep only on a mattress on the floor, but he’s way too active for that… he’ll never sleep (or go to sleep 5 hours after I put him to bed).   It’s a good idea to move him out of the crib before he falls out and gets hurt. I just took apart the crib and moved it out of the room all together. Then I put my son’s crib mattress on the floor so if he rolled off he wouldn’t get hurt. Once my son stayed on his crib mattress without rolling off I moved him to a twin mattress on the floor, then I added the box spring. Finally I put it up on the bed frame. Doing it in stages was an easy transition for my son and I saved money by not buying a toddler bed.

Which baby bed rail do you prefer? My daughter is now rolling like crazy all over my bed and I bought two but returned them because I did not like it. Any suggestions?

  Oh my gosh, I was trying to think back & remember and I THINK this is the first time I have seen a picture of your daughter…or maybe just a recent one. She is beyond BEAUTIFUL, I bet you are one proud mommy! I miss that baby age .

DIY – Child-safe Water Feature Increases Home Value

One way to catch a prospective buyer’s attention to your listing is to mention the water feature that is installed in your back yard. We all love them, especially when they are already set up and running. There are many reasons why a water feature draws everyone’s attention, including the hypnotic effect of watching the never ending motion of water; it is said that the sound of running water is relaxing.

Many people are hesitant to install a pond into their yard. Often they, or their children, have young tots that could fall into the pond and drown. However, there is another solution, if you can forego the goldfish, which is safe even for young children.

The sound of running water and the idea of a water feature in your yard can be satisfied by assembling a pebble fountain in your back yard. This will take a simple reservoir, a small pump which comes with container and lid (or find your own) and pebbles! The quickest way to go about this is to buy a DIY water feature pack and you will have everything you need.

If you want to gather everything together yourself, you will need a pump, tubing, a power adapter, electricity supply, and some kind of lining or container. The container can be anything waterproof and large enough: an old sink, a garden pot (no holes in the bottom), a metal bucket or a trough etc. If you have doubts about the container retaining its waterproof qualities, you can line it with plastic.

The size of the pump you choose will dictate the height that the fountain will reach; for this you may need to consult a sales consultant at the store.

However, the easiest way to do this is to buy a self circulating fountain that you can put in a pot, cover the top with wire mesh that you can pile pebbles onto and sort of build large and small boulders around your water pot. You will need to hide the wire with some of these boulders, and you may wish to ‘sink’ the waterproof container into the garden.

Assuming that you have a spot already dug out for your pebble feature, you can position the pot/vessel and set the pump down in the bottom of it. (You can keep the feature above ground, but it may be more difficult to keep it looking natural.)

Trail the cord out of the pot and connect it to the power supply. This wire will dictate your design of pebbles to some extent, as you will need to keep it ‘hidden’. If you drill a hole to let the wire go through, make sure it is above the water line and also completely sealed. If you have to do this it is safer to consult an electrician.

If you are an adamant DIY person, then ‘glue’ a quirky shaped pebble over the top of the pot to hide the wire. You can build all the pebbles up afterwards, and make this look more natural.

Pebbles can be bought, though you may find it a relaxing pasttime to collect some of your own from the beach or riverside. If the pebbles do not look clean, they will have to be washed, to avoid too much sediment getting near your pump.

You could consider whether to put a plastic liner around the pot that slopes downwards into the pot, to drain rebellious water into your pot, as the wind can blow the water too far away from the reservoir. This means that you can run out of water – or at least run out of the water in your reservoir. Since the pump needs this water to work, it is imperative that you keep it well supplied.

The addition of some plants (potted or otherwise) will enhance your water feature and expand the area of it. You can then use the extra area to add seating with a couple of tall potted shrubs behind the chairs, and you have a charming ambience in your back yard. Just make sure you switch on the pump if prospective buyers visit the house.

  My son and I play stop and go while we are at the store, and it is wonderful. I push the cart and he runs down the aisle ahead of me, and when he gets far enough I yell STOP! and he stops short. I get a little closer to him and say okay, GO! then he runs again. Every time I say stop, he stops and he has to wait for me to say go before he can go. It’s been SO helpful when we are in a busy store, because if he gets away from me, I yell STOP and he waits for me to catch up to him, then I can remind him to stay with me. It is also useful on walks or playing in the yard or whatever – I don’t have to argue with him about why he has to stop, he just does it. As far as playgrounds, just make sure you don’t have your child on equipment that is too advanced for him. There is usually an age recommendation on the playground equipment somewhere, but just use your judgment. You know what your kid can and can’t do. Playing outside, make him wear shoes all the time and teach him not to eat any fruits or berries or leaves or mushrooms or anything he might find outside. I don’t have any tips on school because we aren’t there yet.

  I researched this problem a few years back, my old apt had roaches (eeeew). Try this, it works:
  Roaches HATE catnip. Get a bag of catnip, and soak it in hot water for a little bit (like making tea). Strain it, and then get an old spray bottle (from something used prior that is non-harmful to pets, of course, or a new one). Spray the ‘tea’ by the door, under the fridge, by anywhere that you think they enter. It completely worked for me, and they never came back!
  
  PS the longer the catnip steeps, the better, but don’t pour all of the mixture into the spray bottle, as the leaves of the catnip will clog it – you can also keep the ‘tea’ in the fridge and use a paper towel to apply it where you need it.

thank you everybody! and i am the child, just so ya know. im 11. and we heard blow smoke in the ear. it helps the pain, because of the warmth. but it didnt do much besides that.

  Yes! Buy a bottle of garlic oil capsules. Take one and roll it around in your hand for a minute to melt the jelly-like oil. Pierce the end of it with a sterile needle, and squeeze the oil into the ear. Work it down good, and put a cotton plug in the ear. Garlic is a natural antibiotic. I’ve done this with my own 2 year old who had so many ear infections, she had to take antibiotics for 2 months straight once. The garlic oil method cured the ear infection in 2 days (done every 4 hours) Her pediatrician confirmed that it was gone too.
  
  The sweet oil is good, but I’ve had better results with garlic oil. If you want sweet oil, it’s at Wal-Mart in the wound care section. It’s a 2 ounce bottle, and the label says “Humco Sweet Oil N. F.” The bottle is brown, and the lable is a lilac color.
  
  Edit note: Honey, tobacco smoke can CAUSE ear infections in kids. It is not safe to blow it in the ears.

When one has young children (under the age of three), one obviously ends up spending a good deal of time at home & it’s difficult to get to the gym. However, most treadmills and exercise bikes have moving parts that are dangerous for small, curious toddlers. Is there home exercise equipment out there that is child-safe, or ways to better child-proof home exercise equipment you already have?
- ANSWER:
  I would suggest keeping the exercise equipment in a seperate room, that is mostly off limits (such as a master bedroom, spare room, or basement) and using it at a time when you do not need to monitor your child– e.g. when it is napping. Or, alternatively, you could workout while s/he is in a playpen. It is good for you to realize that exercise equipment has many small moveable parts and are not safe for a baby.
  
  That being said, I am sure those big exercise balls would be harmless and maybe even fun for a toddler! Yoga and aerobics are also good alternatives that do not require equipment– just a DVD!

but is the safe distance for a child from home to school and for person to work place?

  I’m confused on this question. Safe distance to walk? Safe distance to ride? When I was in 7th grade I had a 1 1/2 hr or more school bus ride each day. To me that’s too much. Not because it is unsafe but because by the time I got to school was stressed and exhausted and hen I git home in winter it was getting dark so I’d say no more than 45 min to an hour and walking not much over a mile and a half – in the US under normal circumstances. Other places I know kids walk a lot further. Then again safe is relative. Is there a highway to cross, do other kids walk together, is i a neighborhood that is safe for kids to walk at all, As to work I have driven over an hour and know places like Atlanta where commutes take lots longer because of miles not traffic. It would have to be a mighty special job for me to drive much over 1 1/4 hrs at this point. Hope this helps.
