Babies in Motion – Make it safe!

Most of us just can not wait until our little ones start showing signs of recognition and movement.  At approximately six months or later babies start making their way to independence All children develop at their own pace and should not be compared to other children in their process of development.  It is important when babies start exploring, to make their areas safe and to encourage them.  Crawling can be an activity which helps babies with hand eye coordination, in developing a sense of balance, and space and depth perception.

 

Some babies start making crawling movements as early as six months and many start much later.   Rolling over, sitting up without support and walking holding on to furniture for support are all developmental milestones that most babies will reach in their own time.  Some babies seem to resist tummy time.  We can encourage tummy time by lying down with the baby and playing with unique baby toys and putting the toys just beyond their reach.  Sometimes babies decide to take things into their own hands and refuse to crawl in the typical fashion, and choose to scoot on their seats, or crawl on one knee or belly scoot.  No matter what the method of motion, it is important to make sure that they cannot get into a dangerous situation.  You can get baby safety gates for the top or bottom of stairways or for doorways both indoors and outdoors.  There are baby security gates for deck stairs which protect babies from a dangerous fall.

 

There is a term called Symmetric tonic neck reflex which tells the arms to work in opposition to the legs.  The babies learn to operate the upper and lower body independently of each other. This reflex usually begins between six and nine months and becomes less as babies learn to stand and walk.  The term Binocular vision defines looking into the distance and back at hands while crawling and helps babies integrate visual senses for a sense of balance, space and depth perception.

 

It is important to enjoy babies and to be aware of developmental changes so dangerous situations can be avoided and the growing independence is a positive both for babies and parents.
