Baby Strollers – a Safe Carriage for Babies

Author: Jayson Pablo

A baby stroller or a buggy is a popular baby transport. It is generally used to carry a child of up to 3 years of age. In a stroller, the child sits in a manner that she or he does not faces the pusher. A perambulator or pram is used to carry new born babies. It has the infant lying down in it, facing the pusher. Prams were first used in the UK during the Victorian period. Later, a suspension mechanism was added to the baby carriage that made ride smooth both for the child and the parents.

A baby stroller is comparatively smaller in size and also costs less than a pram. A more compact form of buggy, called Pushchair was released in the UK during early 1980s. The carriage became an instant hit among the Britishers as it was made of a collapsible aluminum frame. A variety of strollers are also available in the markets that are used to carry twin babies or two babies of similar age.

Travel systems are the latest evolution of baby strollers. They typically consist of a chassis with a detachable carrycot or baby seat. It can be conveniently switched between a pram and a pushchair as per needs. Its baby seat allows undisturbed movement of the baby on to a car seat. It thus considerably reduces the chances of inadvertently waking up a sleeping baby while one moves her or him to a car seat. The United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UN ECE) has categorized car seats into five mass groups. While the Group 0 seat can carry children of up to 10 kg, the Group 1 seats can carry children weighing 9 to 18 kg.

The latest versions of baby strollers are light weight and come equipped with swivel wheels for easy maneuvering. A number of retailers in the UK also sell buggies that can be customized according to the needs of the baby and the parents. Current strollers feature a number of baby safety designs like sun rider canopies, easy step-in rear stadium style seating and drink holders.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. QUESTION:
What baby products are safe to use? Is there a list or guide available?
I am looking to give shower and baby gifts for a family member, and the mother is being very specific about safety. She does not want anything from China because of the recent recalls. I am wondering if anyone knows if there are any guidelines or lists somewhere that identifies safe products. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • ANSWER:
There is no list that I am aware of but there are some products
available that are made in the USA and in Europe.
My favorite bath product for babies that is made in the USA is Noodle and Boo.
The best toys are made in Germany by Haba, Selecta, etc.
Also, clothes made in France and most of Europe will not have fire retardant in it(nasty stuff that gets soaked into your baby’s skin).
Some of the products are a little pricey, especially coming from Europe because their currency is very strong right now. I will list some websites below.

  2. QUESTION:
How do you know what baby products are safe?
I’m expecting my first baby (in 5 days!) and already have everything we need. But there are a few products we got as gifts (or i bought without thinking about it). We got the Little Noses survival kit that comes with saline drops and oral gel…has anyone used these products or know anything about them?
Also what items would you suggest and what items would you not suggest and why?

    • ANSWER:
Congratulations and I hope you have a very safe and memorable birth experience. I think it is great that you are taking the time to think about what you allow to come into contact with your child.

Unfortunately, there are many ingredients in products (baby, skincare, etc.) that contain chemicals that are not healthy. It is prudent to be careful.

If you have a question, don’t hesitate to jump on the internet and research the ingredients. You can look at the sites below.

One discusses the benefits of natural baby products and the other is a database that breaks down what is in over 42,000 products in the marketplace.

  3. QUESTION:
safe hair styling products for baby?
I have a 6 month old who is getting her first pictures done in a few weeks time. She has a head full of dark unruly curls. I don’t want her pictures to have these crazy curls going everywhere, but something that looks a bit more put together.

So, does anyone know of any baby safe hair products? I’ve read other places that a little gel or hairspray isn’t so bad, but to go with natural products…Any thoughts?

    • ANSWER:
There are no products out there that are safe for babies to use because it is not safe. Only tear free shampoos and detanglers. She is a baby, her hair is still growing and shaping into a style. Just comb her hair and put a ribbon or hair clips in her hair.

  4. QUESTION:
Safe baby products and bottles without phelates?
any suggestions…i know i can get glass bottles and burts bees stuff..but the smell is so strong any suggestions? thanks
i might have spelled that wrong
thanks! that makes me feel better…i will check them out

    • ANSWER:
id recommend the Playtex nursers. You can put in the liners instead of using a plastic bottle. Walmart is now making organic products to use for babies, as well as Babies r us. Its worth a try to take a look at either of those places for natural baby items.

  5. QUESTION:
Is “Green-Works” cleaner safe to use on baby products?
It says its all natural…Just wondering if its safe to use on baby products (Highchair, bathtub, toys, etc…) also, what do you mommies use to clean your babies items?

    • ANSWER:
i’m sure they are fine… i use dish soap to clean toys and high chair, and bathroom cleaning products for the tub. i’ve used natural products… i mean i use them on baby items if that’s what i’m using at home .. they are fine. just like any other cleaning product, just make sure to rinse with plenty of water.

  6. QUESTION:
    Are your baby products safe?
Have you looked at this web site? It rates the safety of various baby lotions, diaper creams, baby wipes, baby washes… I found out that none of our products are considered safe.

This web site rates the safety of many different brands of baby lotion, baby wipes, powders, diaper creams, etc. I just went in and found that of the nine products we have on hand, six were rated and had a hazard rating anywhere from 3 to 6. The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics advises against using anything with a hazard rating higher than a 2. Needless to say, we will be making some changes starting today!

I noticed that many Mustela products seemed to rate really badly, with some listed as highly toxic and possibly cancer causing, etc. Many of the California Baby products were rated as safe. But Burts Bees did not fare as well as I had expected.

    • ANSWER:
I have seen that webpage and I look at it occasionally. I think it’s helpful, although they tend towards being alarmist. Some of the ingredients they deem as unsafe–parabens, for example–have not been shown to be unsafe. Their rationale for categorizing some ingredients as unsafe seem scientifically questionable. It is still a good resource because it makes you aware of a lot of potentially harmful ingredients in everyday products, but I find that I have to do a lot of my own research to find out if their warnings are legit.

  7. QUESTION:
I am 5 weeks pregnant and work with industrial cleaning products. Is my baby safe?
I clean offices and schools for a living and use a lot of chemicals. Although I wear gloves at all times, is my baby still at risk?

    • ANSWER:
A mask is a good idea, and gloves. But just to be safe do ask your doctor. There is a Dr expert on The Bump who answers questions if you want to do that while you’re waiting to hear back from your doctor. Here’s a link: http://community.thenestbaby.com/cs/ks/blogs/2ndtrimester/pages/expert-dr-ashley-roman.aspx

  8. QUESTION:
do you use the SKIN DEEP cosmetic safety database to find out how safe the baby products you buy are?
my friend told me about it and i was wondering whether i could trust the information on the website. http://www.cosmeticsdatabase.com/browse.php?maincat=babycare

    • ANSWER:
ummm YES why mothers do not read the ingredients on bath products I will never know! SLS, parabens etc.

If you cannot pronounce it, it is not good!

Warm water is ALL a baby needs to be cleaned with, olive or coconut is all they need for moisturizer.

Reasons It Is Smart For Parents To Use A Child Safety Alarm

Author: Jeff Schuman

Do you want to use a child safety alarm to help protect your children, but are not sure this is wise? Then it is important for you to know the essential reasons you would definitely be smart for doing this.

There are many vital reasons, but below are the ones that you have to be aware of the most. When it comes to the safety of your kids, this will let you make the wise decision.

1. Helps to prevent you from losing them if they wander off – Children of all ages are known for wandering off. They don’t know that there could be danger for them.

They are just curious about things in life and want to explore. By having an alarm, you will be able to keep them from wandering off and getting lost.

2. Helps to stop them from being taken – No parent wants to think of their kids being taken by anyone, but unfortunately it does happen. With an alarm, you will have a way to locate your child before anyone can get away with them.

This may also help to catch whoever the person is trying to take them since you will attract the attention of others around you.

3. Helps you locate them much easier – Now the alarm will not stop the above two things from happening, but it will make it so much easier to locate your child if they do happen. Not being able to find them, especially in a crowded area is a parent’s worst nightmare.

You can prevent this nightmare from continuing for a long period of time by having an alarm to locate them easily. Things could be really bad without an alarm to help you find them, if either of these two situations ever does occur with your kids.

These are the reasons that all parents need to keep in mind when trying to decide to use these alarms. You have to remember that your kid’s safety comes first and using these to protect them is smart.

It is smart for you to find the right one to use, for any parent that still plans on using these alarms. They can be found in different shapes and sizes. Find the right one to use will help make sure that it is going to be effective for protecting your kids.

Now that you know the main reasons that all parents should use these alarms, you need to decide if you are going to use them. Remember that your child’s safety comes before everything, so make your decision carefully so you can be confident the right choice is made.

    • ANSWER:
The links inside the door are jammed together. If you can, spray some wd-40 in as far as you can to try to loosen it up. If that doesn’t work someone will have to take the door panel off and find the bind.

I have tried turning off the main power, but that didn’t work. I can not reach the plug. any suggestions. my clothes are going to mold fast if I leave it in there too long.

  3. QUESTION:
how do you lock child safety door locks on rear doors on mazda3?
    2006 mazda 3 four door

    • ANSWER:
Most vehicles have a switch on the side of the door. Open the back door and look at the side. There should be either a switch that is obvious or a label or sticker instructing you how to do it.

  4. QUESTION:
    Child safety door lock?
My 3 year old figured out if she slams the door over and over when its open or hits the handle with something hard the safety lock will pop off. No I am terrified because she can get the lock off and she has figured out how to climb up the front door and unlock the pad lock. She is also able to get into our pantry, the bathrooms and my room mates room. Anyone have any ideas on a better way to keep her from opening the doors.
I don’t own my home and can’t put any new locks or make any holes.
My child isn’t out of control if kids just needed to be put in the corner or spanked every time they opened a door they wouldn’t make the special locks for them. My child isn’t a bad kid she just loves to play with my room mate and is aloud in there sometimes so she isn’t doing it to be bad!

    • ANSWER:
I use these in my home. I had these done by professional child proofers but it just involves a screw into your door jamb so it isn’t complicated. My kids couldn’t reach these even if they stand on a chair! I also like them because they aren’t tricky, just slide back and forth.

      http://www.amazon.com/Child-Proof-Deluxe-Door-Lock/dp/B0014WN86Q

edit: sorry those devices won’t work for you, but they only make one small screw hole you could easily spackle over and no one would ever notice. Also, I have a 3 year old and if she opened the front door by herself without my permission. I would discipline her by putting her in the chair or taking away (temporarily) a favorite toy/priveledge. That is a real danger to her. Trust me, if you do it every time, they’ll get the picture! Good luck!

  5. QUESTION:
Can you open a Child Safety locked back door FROM THE INSIDE?
I’m trying this for a fan-fiction; it’s one of those quick details that’ll probably never come up again, but it’s been bugging me for a week.
This character flashes back to his childhood. He gets kidnapped, and has no time to prepare, so it’s not like he brings a lock-pick set or anything. Anywho, he’s shoved into the back seat of this car, and the doors are locked with child safety locks (or for more of a challenge, I’ll accept input on police cars, whose back doors aren’t supposed to open AT ALL from the inside, or so the movies have it….)
….How does he get out? Can he get at the lock from the inside so that he can escape, and more important, how does he do it before the kidnappers realize what he’s doing? (No, they’re not bumbling idiots, I just want him to be really good at what he does.)
Or must I to cheat on that scene, and when (end of flashback) he’s asked how he got out , he responds only with “Very carefully”?
I may have other quick-shot fiction questions in the future.

    • ANSWER:
no you cant open it from the inside

  6. QUESTION:

I have a 1999 Mitsubishi Galant….I know how to do the windows, there is a button by the window controls, but if you are in the back seat of the car you are essentially locked in – how do I fix that?

    • ANSWER:
Open the back door. From the outside. Look for the lever and move it to the “B” position. See http://new.volvocars.com/ownersdocs/1998/1998_SV70/98sv70_045.htm and scroll down, I know that isn’t your car, but they all look about the same and are in about the same position, so you’ll know what to look for.

A patent attorney family member offered to do a patent search, even write up a Utility for my child safety device, but I’m broke right now and can’t pay the filing fee. This invention is totally new, there is nothing like it on the market right now. How do you think I will be taken with only a provisional? Will companies even take me seriously? If they are interested is there a chance they would help pay for patenting fees? I have no idea how this process typically works. Any help would be great.

    • ANSWER:
      Hi,
I’ve come across many people who think patents protect them – they don’t. Just look around you – how long was it before MP3 players came on the market after the Apple iPod, for example?

Before you spend a lot of money on a patent you need to do some hard research on how your idea/product can make money. You can do your own (free) patent searches on line and I’d be amazed if you don’t find something similar to your idea. If you look for a partner to provide funds (e.g. Angel investor) for product development, they are going to be much more interested in how much the product will make, how big the market for it is, etc. The “fact” that there’s nothing like this idea of yours on the market is a warning bell! If it is so useful, why isn’t it on the market? I’ve had many “inventors” come to me with ideas that are fine on paper (e.g. new engine with few moving parts) but they underestimate the costs involved to bring it to market as well as the limited advantages it brings over existing products.

You can often discuss the market for your product without providing details, simply be refering to what you perceive as the advantages, and not how it would be done. You can ask “What would you pay for a product that protected your child from … whatever” or “If such and such could be done, would you use a product like that?”

  2. QUESTION:
Where can I buy a child safety device that will prevent my toddler from trying to pull the TV down?
We have an entertainment armoire cabinet and even though it’s anchored to the wall, I can’t find a child safety device that will mount the TV in the shelf as well so she can’t pull it down and potentially injure herself. Thank you!!!!

    • ANSWER:
I looked everywhere (Home Depot, Lowes, online) & this is all I could find:

      http://www.onestepahead.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=261756&parentCategoryId=85183&categoryId=85216&subCategoryId=86200

It works amazingly well – I even left a review, I was so pleased. The key is to get as many kits needed for the weight of your tv. Don’t forget to anchor your dressers as well. My 4 year old “wanted to see what was in the top drawer” when I caught her pulling herself up w/ the bottom drawer out! Thank goodness we had those already installed.

      Hope it works for you!

  3. QUESTION:

  8. QUESTION:
Is there a motorcycle safety belt or some other safety device used to connect a young child to the driver?
My little girl cannot reach the footpegs (by 8-10 inches) and she is pestering me to take her for a ride ever since she got a helmet for her 5th birthday. I would love to, but safety comes first. I have asked a Michigan State Police Officer about laws govorning child passengers on motorcycles and he informed me that there is no age limit, and the only law he was familiar with was that for a passenger to ride on a motorcycle, the bike has to have 2 things – a rear seat and rear footpegs.

    • ANSWER:
I take my kids out for little rides. We go slow around town.

And I am sure you are smart enough to dress her properly! Geez, people are freaking out! Don’t they take there kids for bicycle rides? That can be just as dangerous with traffic around.

The law in Alberta is no passenger in front of you. (I think) And I think that would be unsafe for control of the bike.

I think it would not be safe to harness them to you. I have told all of mine (age 5 to 9) that if the bike is falling over, to get away from it so it doesn’t land on top of them. I don’t worry about them falling off though. They hook there fingers through my belt loops in the front of me.

It would be safer if her feet reached the pegs. But I think as long as she had somewhere to firmly place them, for stability.

Remember to tell her that if she rides it, she has to help clean it! (but they usually like this anyway!)

    .Diaper bag (already packed :])

Am I forgetting anything? I thinks that’s everything..

    Thanks :]
Oh yeah the baby carrier, I almost forgot! Thanks :]

    • ANSWER:
I agree with everything Arlene G said. It sounds like you have pretty much everything covered for the baby so don’t forget about yourself. This is coming from experience because no one even told me to take any of those things for myself. My poor husband was always having to run to the store for extra things.

I would suggest bringing something to keep all the paperwork in. You will have lots and it’s so easy to just put them in one place so you aren’t worried about losing or forgetting them.

Also have some healthy snacks for when the baby comes home because I know I wasn’t able to eat for more than 5 mins at a time :) . Escpecially because she had colic.

You might want to get some baby gas drops just in case.

And this is a personal choice but I now have a wrap for the baby and wish I had looked into them sooner so maybe you could check out those. But other than that it seems as if you are all set. Congratulations!

  4. QUESTION:
What would you recommend for bathing a 6 month old?
He no longer fit on his tub, I got one of those safety first chairs,(this one: http://shop.parents.com/product/bath-safety/5553/safety-first-tubside-bath-seat.html) but what I hate is that you have to fill the whole bath tub and it wastes too much water, also it is kinda uncomfortable, hard, cold and the baby can only sit up.

What else is there and what are other alternatives?

    thanks in advance…

    • ANSWER:
we have this and I like it.

      http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3331853&CAWELAID=295754954

it’s pretty big, it’s recommended until age 2, and it’s soft. we did have my son in the regular tub from birth (on a big bath sponge) but he began hating it around 6 months. try the regular tub and then if that doesn’t work or if you don’t feel comfortable, try a blow up tub.

  5. QUESTION:
    Bathing an older baby?
My daughters 7.5 months old and has outgrown her baby bath tubs so at Christmas I went and bought her the munchkin inflatable duck tub

    http://www.munchkin.com/products/detail.html?section=prodCategories&ID=10000&pID=168

It has been great, but now that she knows how to pull up she has taken to trying to use the inflatable sides to stand up which of course can’t support her weight and she ends up nearly hitting her head on the side of the bath tub

So I’ve herd great comments about the safety first Tubside bath seat

    http://www.toysrus.ca/product/index.jsp?productId=2857180&cp=2582924.2582927.2582927&parentPage=family

So I bought it today and read the instructions and it said it wasn’t suitable for a baby who could pull up, I figured it wouldn’t be that big of a deal and came to use it……only to find out my stupid bathtub edge is too big and the retractable arm won’t sit on the edge of my bath tub (so back to walmart I go tommorrow to return it)

So now I hear about these bath tub rings I come to look them up at stores in my area and you can’t buy them anymore. I’m guessing to too many neglectful parents and too many deaths because of them

    http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41VK4FG295L._SL500_AA280_.jpg

So anyways I have found some used ones in the area and just wondering if they have the same precaution of if a baby can pull itself up they can’t use it anymore

Also what have you done if you didn’t use the rings or baths? I tried to bath her with nothing and she was slipping and sliding everywhere and I even have slip grooves built into my bath tub…should I get the suction cup ones from the store to reduce the slippage?

Just wondering what other people have done, and it’s not an option to let my daughter stand to get bathed as I don’t want it to become a habit for when she is older and become a slip hazard! I’ve fallen backwards in the bathtub and hit the back of my head on the faucet when I was 3 and from what I’ve herd from my mother it wasn’t a fun experiance

I do have a detachable shower head which has been great and fun lol

    • ANSWER:
Lilah is 8 months and I was using her infant tub until about a month ago. Now when I give her a bath in the evening, I just get in with her and kind of set her between my legs so she doesn’t slip over. She loves it. She plays with her Rubber duckies while I bathe her all whilst managing to splash water all over the place! lol….I find it much easier than the infant tub. Plus it’s a nice bonding time =)…..

I have yet to purchase a mat, but it’s something I am going to do soon….I think it would help alot.

  7. QUESTION:
    retailers recall Simplicity bassinets ?
WASHINGTON – Eleven more retailers have recalled Simplicity bassinets, bringing the total to 17 that have decided to recall the infant beds, which are linked to the deaths of two babies

The Consumer Product Safety Commission said Wednesday that 11 additional retailers are pulling from their shelves the “close-sleeper/bedside sleeper” bassinets because the products pose a strangulation hazard. Those retailers include AAFES, Amazon.com LLC, Bed Bath and Beyond/BuyBuyBaby, Burlington Coat Factory, Chelsea & Scott LTD (OneStepAhead), CSN Stores, Fingerhut Direct Marketing, Kohl’s Department Stores, ShopKo Stores Inc., Sweet Pea Decor, and six stores of USA Baby.

The agency first announced on Aug. 28 that Wal-Mart Stores Inc., Toys “R” Us Inc., Kmart Corp., Big Lots, Target, J.C. Penney have recalled the products. The recall affects nearly 900,000 bassinets.

In recalling the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 convertible bassinets, the retailers have agreed to provide a refund or store credit to consumers who return the product to the store where they purchased it, CPSC said.

A 6-month-old girl from Shawnee, Kan., was strangled on Aug. 21 when she became trapped between the bassinet’s metal bars. In September 2007, a 4-month-old girl from Noel, Mo., became trapped in the bassinet’s metal bars and died.

The Simplicity bassinets have metal bars spaced farther apart than federal standards allow. Julie Vallese, a CPSC spokeswoman, said consumers can tell if their Simplicity bassinet is recalled if it has removable fabric that is fastened by Velcro.

SFCA Inc., the company that purchased the assets of Reading, Pa.-based Simplicity Inc. earlier this year, has refused to recall the products. SFCA maintains that it is not responsible for products previously manufactured by Simplicity.

  8. QUESTION:
im doing a speech on why the FDA should regulate personal care prouducts and i need more information help!?!?
so this is wht i have so far:
Do you think that major businesses would avoid putting there customers in dangers way, when they would make lots of money even by doing so? I don’t! For example, just look at are tobacco companies. Every year many people die from using there products. Yet they continue to sell and produce there products because there making millions from it. Did you know that your cosmetics and personal care products aren’t even regulated by the FDA before they are sold to you? The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health discovered that 884 out of the 2,983 chemicals available to be used in cosmetics alone have been reported as toxic substances to the government. If the FDA doesn’t start regulating these products then just think about it that’s millions of people everyday that are putting themselves in danger of serious harmful conditions. There are statistics and sceneries that prove that cosmetics are a danger to the pubic. And proof that the FDA dose not regulate cosmetics nor do they make very many efforts to warn you or the dangers.
One of the main reasons the FDA should regulate personal care products is the FDA website directly quotes that: “Cosmetic products and ingredients are not subject to pre market approval authority, with exception of color additives. However, FDA may pursue enforcement action against violative products or against firms or individuals who violate the law.” The FDA also states that: “Cosmetic firms are responsible for sustaining the safety of their products and ingredients before marketing failure to adequately substantiate the safety of a cosmetic product or its ingredients prior to marketing causes the product to misbranded unless the following warning statement appears conspicuously on the principal display panel of the products label: warning –the safety of this product has not been determined.” Their for because the FDA dose not regulate cosmetics and other personal care products just by using the products you are putting yourself in danger of cancer, genetic damage, and other serious conditions. Cosmetics include: baby powder, bubble bath, toothpaste, deodorants, shaving cream, hair tonics, hairsprays, colognes, sun tan lotions, mouth washes, baby shampoo, hand lotions, shampoo, conditioner, hair dyes, moisturizing cream, and many other products. Americans think these products are safe. But this confidence is too unjustified. Our public wants and demands higher standards of protection. This protection has been established for drugs, medical devices, and food additives but not for cosmetics. The Cosmetic industries want people to believe that no effective regulation of cosmetics is necessary at state or federal level. The FDA doesn’t even do much, to protect or warn women when it comes to the danger of using femine hygiene products. Not only have that but the legislation prohibited states from taking action as well.
Cosmetics are under-regulated and too often hazardous. Here are just a couple examples of people that found this out the hard way: A 59 year old woman almost died from a allergic reaction she had to hair dye. Another woman of age47 had her cornea destroyed by a mascara wand. A 6 year old girl and her mother used air product that resulted in second degree burns on her ears and neck! As result of using a inflammable hair treatmfgbfgytjjjyjyjtjhhnnnhjnjhjjjmmmmjkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk……..zzs very scarred. Other examples of injures that cosmetics can result in are: pain and tissue damage, sores, eye infection, cancer, blindness, eye problems such as; rash, redness, swelling, and inflammation. And the list goes on and on. For every one million cosmetics products purchased there are 200 more visits to a doctor to treat cosmetic-caused illnesses.
A study for consumer product safety commission in 1987 found that in 1 year alone, cosmetic products result in 47,000 emergency room visits. Between 1985 and 1987 more then 150,000 cosmetic related injures occurred. One third of chemicals used in cosmetics are toxic. More then 125 ingredients that are in cosmetics are suspected to be the cause of cancer. 20 cosmetic ingredients may affect the nervous system; this includes headaches, drowsiness, and convulsions. Birth defects are suspected to be cause by another 20 cosmetic ingredients. The GAO concluded that: “cosmetics are being marketed in the united states which may pose a serious hazard to the public.”
I believe that the cosmetic companies should be regulated by the FDA. To make
The likeliness of a person becoming injured less. And reduce the number of visits to the emergency room because of cosmetic related injures.

i need a 10 minute long speech for my speech and debate class and this isnt long enough i know i need to deosite all my statistics(which r in one paragraph right now) but i ineed more information….everywhere i look its the same old stuff so can someone please help me get a few more paragaphs and stuff so i can be

Safety Gates For Toddlers

Home Safety for Toddlers and Small Children

Author: Mia Thompson

If you have toddlers in your home, then safety is obviously a big concern. They are big enough and mobile enough to go just about anywhere but they little to no understanding of how dangerous some things might be. So, you know that you need to toddler-proof your home but how do you go about it?

A great place to start is by placing ‘baby gates’ at the top and bottom of the stair case to prevent injuries. Be sure that you purchase a gate that is sturdy and can be easily fastened to the wall, railing or some other solid surface on or near the stairs. Even with a baby gate, never leave a toddler unattended near the stairs.

Next on the list to put child safety latches on all cupboard and cabinet doors the child could possibly reach. Remember, toddlers can climb! Pa extra attention the cabinets under the kitchen or bathroom sink or anyplace you store medicine, cleaning supplies, garden chemicals or poisons. In the garage or storage shed, store all weed killers and chemicals in a locked cabinet and place the key in a location where your child cannot find it.

When it comes to toddler safety, prevention is the best method. Store your child’s books and toys at their level so they do not have to climb to get to their favorite game or stuffed animal. If your child has a lamp, fan or other electrical appliance in his/her room, tuck cords safely behind furniture so the child cannot pull anything down on himself.

Avoid choking hazards by keeping young children away from small objects, pieces of toys, and small pieces of board games. Read manufacturer instructions for all toys and follow their guidelines. Buy only those toys and games that are appropriate for a child of a particular age. Place plastic safety plugs in electrical outlets so the child cannot stick his fingers in the outlet.

One aspect of home safety that is often overlooked is mildew and mold. Mildew and mold can cause serious illness and injury in adults and toddlers alike. Mold or mildew can be the cause of allergies and asthma in small children. Install a dehumidifier in any damp areas to mitigate the moisture in the air.

    I’m not too good with measurements, but my guess is about three to four feet. I WOULD use the tape measure, but I think the little nugget took off with it somewhere. >>;
I already searched the web, so telling me places like eBay won’t help.
    Thanks in advance.
    Aha! It’s pretty hard to dig through concrete. And if he did, I wouldn’t be worried about him getting to the bedrooms anymore. Right after that happened, I’d lock him in a strong cage. >>;
I don’t want an overly strong three year old running around. D:
I don’t think the mesh gate will work. I’m sure he’ll find a way to climb over it.
And for the dog gate idea, that could work!
I’ll look into it. Do you happen to know any sites yourself?

  3. QUESTION:
Looking for affordable Window gates or safety bars for Windows?
I have tried the internet, so far all I can find are the steel bar inserts and each one is 50 bucks. I want like 4 of them and thats too pricey. Has anyone else found window gates or bars for cheaper and where from? I want them for my toddlers. They are getting too close to the windows. We dont have tall upstairs ones but theres a few that are a good 6 or more feet off the ground

    • ANSWER:
You’ve got some OLD windows. You can try hardware stores like Lowe’s or Home Depo or Rural King. Other then that you may have to opt for the expensive gates.
My husband says that there are window locks for the windows and a special pad lock that you have to open with a key. I’m not sure where to get those though or if they still have them. Google them if you can.

  4. QUESTION:
Is It Safe To Leave My Toddlers Play Desk In Her Room At Night?
My daughter is nearly 2 years of age and i have recently moved her into her own room with a safety gate.
She has a desk in her room for which today she was climbing on and i have become a little worried of the idea she might use it to move to the door and climb over the safety gate.
My partner says i am over reacting; but seems this is highly possible, i am not sure that i am? Any advise please? Many thanks in advance.

    • ANSWER:
      teach her not to climb

Remember you can child proof your house but not the world. She needs to be taught what is safe & what isn’t. So if you removed the desk from her room and other things she can’t climb on then what is going to do the moment she sees thing she can climb on? CLIMB

My son was a climber. We made sure his dresser in his room was secure to the wall but that is it. When he would want to try to climb things we would firmly tell him no, tell him it wasn’t safe & so on. If he did climb on something he wasn’t suppose to like grandma’s bar stools & he fell a bit we’d say “No climbing. You will get a boo boo.” This would get the message across.

Make sure her room is safe with out let covers & making sure furniture like dressers, toy boxes & so on won’t fall over on her. But that is it.

Show her how to sit in a chair for her desk. Show how it is used to color & draw. If you see her tying to climb on it again just tell her no. Showing her how to use the desk will also explain why isn’t for climbing.

We also made a rule where you only climbed outside. Like it is ok to climb on the swing set or play land thing. It is ok to climb onto a see saw or jungle gym. But it is not ok to climb on things inside. Does that sense?

Teach her she isn’t to climb over the gate. No touching the gate either. I’m curious at why you have a safety gate on her door?? Do you just not want her to come out of her room at naptime or bedtime? You can teach her taught. Right now all the gate is to her is road block. All she knows is she can’t go past it. But does she know why? You can easily teach a child to say in their room when you want them to & yes even at 2 you can do that.

I wrote an article about “Room time” which includes that you can read it here –

  5. QUESTION:
4yr old will not go/stay in bed ~ Any ideas?
My 4 year old is constantly getting out of bed – he can be totally exhausted yet his determination to stay awake seems to out do his need to sleep!!!

He has every reason you can think of – wants to go to the toilet, he needs more cuddles, wants a drink of water, his teddy fell out of bed, he has a sore toe etc etc This can go on for 2 or more hours from when it is bed time (7.30pm)!! It disturbs the other children trying to get to sleep and drives me nuts!

His routine prior to bed include – toilet, brush teeth, drink water, story time, cuddles.
I have tried sitting with him, I have tried rubbing his back, I have tried getting cross LOL

I “indulge” him 3 times – after that I take his hand and walk him back to his bed, all I say is “time for bed”. Now (even after all this) he is waking in the night (3am last night) and coming into my bed!!

Seriously considering getting a ‘Toddler Safety Gate’ for his bedroom door so that he can’t get out (but can still call me if he needs me!) What do you think?? Ideas??
    Thanks

    • ANSWER:
my friend had this problem — she put a baby gate on the door so he couldn’t get out — he fell asleep trying to crawl under the small gap at the bottom a few nights — but after a couple weeks it cured him. he slept in his bed threw the night after that and they haven’t had any problems since.

  6. QUESTION:
What do you do for toddler stair safety? Do you have a gate?
We of course watch our son but people keep telling me to get a gate for the top of the stairs… Can you make any recommendations? Thanks!

    • ANSWER:
We have a gate at the top (summer extra tall walk through gate from babies r us) and a gate at the bottom. The one at the bottom is just a regular one with the handle that expands, but the one at the top is one that gets installed in the wall. Our daughter is 8 months old and can’t quite walk yet but it only takes a second for them to fall down.

  7. QUESTION:
Is it safe for my son to move to a toddler bed?
My son is almost 17 months old and climbed out of his crib for the first time last night. He continued to climb out 4 more times immediately after that. The next night I left the side of his crib down do decrease the chance of him getting hurt. I put a safety gate in the hallway so if he did get up he could only come to my room. That didn’t work though because I woke up @ 3am to him saying Mama from the other side of the gate. He can obviously climb anything. If I put him in his toddler bed, how do i keep him safe from the rest of the house if he gets out of bed while I’m sleeping? Any suggestions on how to resolve these problems?

    • ANSWER:
Move him to a toddler bed and tell him you expect him to stay in it at night. (whether he does or not is another story. In your hallway you could put up two gates (one above the other) so he can’t get over them. It sounds silly but you don’t want a kid that young roaming the house.

  8. QUESTION:
Need help with 1 yr. old crawling out of crib?
My son not only climbed out of the crib but we even bought the mesh tent for the top and he got out of that as well. He is 16 months old and quiet as a mouse. We have a toddler bed but I am scared he will wake up and sneak around and get into something. He also gets over safety gates and there are other children in the house who forget to close bathroom doors, pick up choking hazards, etc. Any ideas?

    • ANSWER:
I would put him in his toddler bed, and teach him not to get up.Tell him if he needs you to call you, but until he learns, double gate the door, one on top of the other.

Baby Car Seats – Which One Does Your Child Need

Author: Craig Thornburrow

Baby car seats are very important to the safety of your child while he/she is travelling in a vehicle.  All newer car seats meet all the safety regulations that have been established nationally.  The correct installation and the correct seat can be the difference between injury and no injury should you become involved in a crash.  Many fire departments and police departments offer clinics to teach you how to correctly install your seats and to ensure that they are correctly installed.  All types of car seats should be installed in the backseat.  The front seat is deadly if your car has a passenger airbag.  There are several types of car seats available – infant car seats, convertible car seats, forward facing toddler seats, and booster seats.

Infant car seats are seats that are designed for infants usually from 5 pounds up to between 22 and 30 pounds (depending on the model).  These seats should always be rear facing as this is the safest position for your baby.  Many infant car seats have bases that latch into the vehicle which allows the actual seat to act as a carrier and to snap in and out of the base.  This will keep you from having to “install” the seat every time you get into the vehicle.  Your infant should remain in the rear facing position until he/she is one year old and 20 pounds.  Both criteria should be met before placing your child in a forward facing seat.

Convertible car seats are car seats that work in both the rear facing and forward facing positions.   This type of car seat is installed in the vehicle in a rear facing position fully reclined until the baby reaches one year and 20 pounds.  At that time, the car seat can be turned around and installed in a forward facing position.  These car seats have a five point harness (or a T-shield or a tray shield) and can be used for children up to age 4 and 40 pounds (some models allow for a heavier 4 year old and go up to 80 pounds).  Many models offer the ability to remove the 5 point harness and install the seat as a belt positioning booster seat.

A forward facing toddler seat is a car seat that is designed for children age 1 to age 4 ranging in weight from 20 pounds to 40 pounds or more depending on the model.  This is the next step in car seats after the infant car seat.  Many of these types of seats also convert into a booster seat.

Booster seats are designed to ensure the seatbelts in your vehicle fit your child.  The seats are for children from age 4 and 40 pounds.  There are high back and backless styles available.  Any toddler or convertible car seat is going to convert to a high back.  A backless style sits in the seat under the child and raises the child to the appropriate height for the belt. It is imperative that your child sits in a baby car seat, make sure you are using the right one.

  2. QUESTION:
where do you find reviews on the safety of car seats and other baby products?

    • ANSWER:
Hi! Here is a link to Consumer Reports Infant car seat products.. you don’t need to be a member for this part

      http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/baby-toddler/car-seats/infant-car-seat-ratings/ratings-overview.htm

For other baby products, I google the name of the product + safety test.

Also, check the reviews on Amazon, Target, Babies R Us… they aren’t “official” but they’ll give you a good idea about how the product functions and if other moms like it.

  3. QUESTION:
Where should the baby safety car seat be located, middle or sides of the car, when facing front?

    • ANSWER:
The middle is safest by far… but having said that, you can put the baby in any position you wish so long as there is an anchor point to attach the seat to.

When i had one baby she went in the middle forward facing but on the side when rearfacing due to issues with the size of the car.

When i had two kids the baby was on the side the whole time as well as the older child who was also in a car seat still.

When i had three kids the newborn capsule went on the side as its hard to get it in the car when its in the middle, but when he went forward facing he went in the middle, with the two older ones in car seats on the sides

  4. QUESTION:
Where can I rent/hire a baby car seat in Madrid? Are there taxis that offer that service?

Being an advid traveller, i prefer to bring my own, i then know what condition the car seat in. every time i rent one it never seems to be in great condition.
most airlines allow you to transport the car seat for free, and not counted as a piece of luggage

  5. QUESTION:
Hey moms and dads! Bumbo baby seat? Safety and usability question?
    Hi!

I was considering the Bumbo baby seat for our 3 month old to use as she will need it in the upcoming months. Reading about the item, it states its great for the baby to learn to sit and it supports them ergonomically. It also says that its great to use for young babies learning to eat solids, to feed them in. BUT it also says, not recommended to be used on a chair, table or any other hard surface. It specifically states for “floor use only”. What? How am I supposed to feed my baby on the floor?

This question is for all you out there that purchased a Bumbo. How do you use it and what do you think? I’m a bit confused on this conflicting information, and I want to be safe. Thanks all in advance!

    • ANSWER:
I loved my bumbo! So did my son, he loved to be up and looking at everything around him and I could sit on the floor and get work done while he would just sit and watch and play. As far as the feeding, I would either sit on the floor and feed him or I would use my regular high chair. Buy it, try it, if you don’t like it, return it!!

      Best of luck!

    • ANSWER:
Tip 1. Securing your child car safety seat Always install the seat tightly, using your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1″) of movement of the seat from side to side or forward. Each time you place your child in the car safety seat, give it a tug to make sure it is still secure

Tip 2. Using tether straps with forward-facing car seats
The tether strap for a forward-facing child car safety seat must be used. The tether strap is located on the rear of the child car safety seat and has a hook. The hook is designed to attach the strap to the tether anchorage on the vehicle as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Ensure the tether is only secured to the designated anchorage point(s) in the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.

Tip 3. Using Universal Anchorage System (UAS) / LATCH
All new Canadian vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2002 come with lower universal anchorage points. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual before using the UAS system/LATCH to determine where the anchorage points are located and ensure that the correct method is used as advised by the car seat manufacturer.

      Tip 5. Using harness slots
Your child car safety seat’s harness straps must be positioned correctly by ensuring they pass through the correct slots.

Rear-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or below the child’s shoulders.
Forward-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or above the child’s shoulders.

Tip 6. Securing your child in the harness
Ensure that the harness system is snug enough on your child’s chest to allow only one finger width between the strap and the child’s collarbone.

Tip 7. Positioning your harness straps
Ensure that harness straps lie flat and they do not twist or fold. Harnesses need to be straightened out each time the child is secured in the seat.

      Tip 8. Adjusting chest clips
Properly adjust the chest clips on the harness. They should lie flat against the chest and be positioned at armpit level.

Tip 9. Installing away from active air bags
Always install child car safety seats away from active air bags. The safest place is in the back seat of a passenger car, sport utility vehicle or light truck and either the second or third row in a mini-van.

Tip 10. Installing your rear-facing child car safety seat on a proper angle

Most child car safety seats have a recline position that must be used when in the rear-facing position for an infant (up to 9kg or 20lbs). Check your child car safety seat owner’s manual for instructions. For rear-facing seats, if necessary, use a tightly rolled towel or a foam bar (pool noodle) under the base of the child car safety seat to adjust the angle to 45 degrees. A forward-facing child car safety seat should be in the upright position. Make sure that when the seat is turned from rear-facing to forward-facing, the recline feature is adjusted to the upright position.

  8. QUESTION:
Baby Car Seat Safety – older vehicles? install teather latch?
I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van

I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada

    • ANSWER:
In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.

Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.

Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.

Child Car Safety Seats – Your Options

By Ciara McGrath

Before you take your new baby home in your car you will need to buy a suitable car safety seat.

Seats for new born infants must be rear facing for safety. This is because a baby younger than about 12 months old does not have neck muscles that are strong enough to support the head. When a car stops suddenly the back rest of a rear facing child seat is designed to support your baby
