In order to ensure your child is safe indoors and outdoors you will need baby safety equipment. There is a massive choice of safety products available which makes shopping for them seem very difficult. Any experienced parent will tell you how wide the choice of products is. You can make things more simple though. There are ways that can help you to choose which ones you should invest in.
1) Speak with different parents whom you know, about baby safety equipment. Find out which ones they do and don’t recommend.
2) Have a pen and piece of paper at the ready for touring your home at a baby’s eye level! Basically what you will be doing is crawling at baby’s height so you can look around the house for potential dangers. This will give you a better idea of what products to invest in and make sure you write each product as a list on your paper.
Here are a few of the most common baby safety equipment:
1) Baby car seat: These are required by law. The time when your baby first leaves the hospital, is the time your little one will need to start using their baby car seat. You should always buy a car seat made by a brand name you can trust.
2) Child safety locks: They will stop your baby reaching into the cupboards and finding dangerous items and will stop your baby from emptying things out of the cupboards and making a mess. Young children really love to empty everything onto the floor! A few of the most commonly purchased child safety locks are; window locks, drawer locks, and cupboard locks. There are also other options such as toilet locks, fridge locks, and much more!
3) Baby stair gate: This safety product is a very good item to invest in. Fit them onto doorways to keep baby out of a room, or at either end of the stairs to stop baby from falling down the stairs. Top of stairs if baby is upstairs, and bottom of stairs if baby is downstairs.
There are other baby safety equipment and products you can buy for protecting your child. The ones mentioned above are just a few of the most popular. Talk to friends who are parents about which safety items they recommend, and read reviews on the products online.
QUESTION:
Buying child home safety equipment..?
I need to now start buying safety equipment for my home, like stair gates, plug socket protectors, fire guards etc.. which are all quite expensive. I was wondering if there is any help towards getting these as im a single parent on a very low income.
i was made redundant whilst on maternity leave and my husband died before baby was born. i have had the sure start maternity grant but the £500 was spent on a cot, clothes, nappies, pram etc..
if anyone knows of any schemes out there to help provide these will be great… else its walking around those charity shops in hope to find something..
*reply to proud* do you have children? if so you should understand that all these things add up.. a stair gate may only be £30 but you need 2 for top and bottom of the stairs.. fire guard..another £30+.. then u need plug, door and corner protectors, cabinet locks for under sinks etc.. all adds up. you may be fortunate enough to say it doesnt cost alot.. but having to save up for all these things means that only my baby eats that week
ANSWER:
In my area there is a project that’s council run and founded (I live in quite a deprived area), they actually contacted me and came to fit cupboard catches and stair gate etc. So if I were you I’d phone your local council and ask them as they provide these services in deprived areas because of the high infant mortality and accident rates.
Oh or failing that you could join Freecycle on yahoo groups and ask for free safety equipment or look out for it.
Good luck.

QUESTION:
MIL is buying my baby toys and clothes?
from garage sales and second hand stores. It’s our first baby, and I know she’s just trying to help us since we don’t have heaps of money, but how do I tell her to stop buying crap? She never asked what type of toys i’ll be allowing for my children, or how I plan to dress them.
I’d like to dress and raise my own child. She had her chance and it makes me sick when she’d rather give her grandchild used crap from someone else’s baby than spend a couple extra bucks to give the baby something new to wear or play with. She even bought used burp cloths?!
I told her that all I needed from a garage sale would be a gate for the stairs and other safety equipment, like corner guards and cabinet locks. She didn’t listen. She just went out and bought “clothes that looked unused”
Help?
I’m not spoiled, thank you, I just don’t like it when people are cheap with family members. I’d never give someone USED clothes for a baby shower gift. Who the hell does that? To me, that’s like giving someone your old clothes for their birthday!
ANSWER:
Ok let me just say my grandmother does the exact same thing and I know how you feel. Except fot the safety things. I’d rather have those bought new. I want my new baby to have new things.
My mother in law does try to give me my husbands old toys though. They also tried to give me his crib, and he is 25 years old.
As for your mother in law just tell her to give you the money instead or tell her exactly what you need from where. Or just go shopping with her and whenever she ask you if you like something at a garage sell tell her no. To everything.
QUESTION:
manufacturers equipment for children, is it nessecary?
Manufacturers are creating more and more equipment for parents to buy for their children. This equipment includes such items as car safety seats (essential to safety), playpens, walkers (essentially unsafe), baby gyms, baby monitors. These items vary in terms of how useful they are and how necessary they are. Equipment manufacturers would have parents believe that all equipment is both necessary and useful. In at least 300 words discuss whether pieces of equipment fill a need for infants or a desire for parents.

QUESTION:
Would you take your 5 month old into a pool?
My niece is turning 4 this weekend and my sister is throwing her a pool party at their home. My son is only 5 months old and we’re leaning towards not taking him into the pool at all. The first reason being that he’s so young and most sun screens are not recommended for babies 6 months and younger. I know we could still use a wide-brimmed hat, swim shirt and trunks, but he’s very fair skinned and I just don’t want him getting too much sun. The second reason being there will be plenty of 4-7 year olds there and they don’t always pay attention to babies. Even though my husband or I would be holding him or at his side the entire time, I just worry. Plus, all the floating activity centers that I’ve found are for 9 months plus like this one: http://www.swimways.com/baby-spring-float-activity-center-w-canopy-p-29.aspx
So, would you take your 5 month old into a pool? If so, have you found any pool safety equipment for babies that young?
ANSWER:
I definitely would take a 5 month old swimming. Its great fun for them and great for getting them used to water. You dont have to take him in for long and if you are holding him hes going to be fine.
QUESTION:
Safety of swimming with sharks in aquariums?
I would like to know how safe is it to swim with sharks in aquariums? Many aquariums offer this activity but what kind of protective equipment do people get when they enter the pool? I have seen a promotional video of Sydney aquarium and these sharks are not baby nor miniature sharks as I would have thought. Someone told me they take their teeth out but that doesn`t sound right either.
For an example Grey Nurse Sharks and Seven Gill Sharks. With Certified guide included
ANSWER:
This activity would generally take place after the sharks have been fed. You would be outfitted in standard scuba gear. As a diver in a small to medium group, I’m told that you and your bubbles would be perceived as a singular ultra-large object by a shark–worth looking at, but nowhere near the first choice as a food source. BTW, sharks constantly lose teeth and get new ones in.
QUESTION:
Attachment Parents, what baby gear did you use?
Trying to figure out how much of this is just ‘fluff’. Sorry so much is listed. If its easier you can just copy/paste the list and delete out the entries you didn’t use. Also, if you have the time, please list reasons why you used or didn’t use certain items. THANK YOU!! You can also add to the list if you feel the need.

ANSWER:
I don’t know if I’m an attachment parent or not, but from the very little I know about AP I can safely say that I at least share similar views on most things.
These are things we use regularly, if not daily:
Infant car seat
Play yard (although not so much now that my son has outgrown the bassinet part and isn’t quite mobile enough to need it again yet)
Sling or wrap carrier (this has been absolutely invaluable to us, we wouldn’t want to live without at least one)
Diaper bag; admittedly a small one, and mostly just for daycare and day long trips
Crib, Bassinet; we used the bassinet for the first four months, after that he moved into the crib
Swing, Bouncer/bouncy seat; we only have a travel swing at home, but he does seem to enjoy the bouncy seat at daycare
Bottles and nipples, Bottle brush; I really wanted to breastfeed but was unable to, plus he needs to take a bottle at daycare while I’m at work
Hamper
Baby towel with hood, Baby washcloths, Infant bathtub; admittedly a regular towel would work just as well, but we got a bunch of hooded towels as gifts
Diaper pail; we use a reusable liner (cloth diapers)
Humidifier; this is really more for us than the baby, we’ve always had to use one during winter
Safety gates; currently being used mostly for the dogs, but I would consider these essential for any house once the baby is mobile
Pacifiers; we use these on and off, he goes through stages where he really likes them and stages where he won’t take them
Baby nail clippers; probably not essential, but I do find them easier to control than regular clippers
Changing table; a lot of people say it’s a waste of money, but I use mine every single day and it doubles as storage for diapers, wipes, burp rags, and blankets
Glider or rocker; again, not essential, but I LOVE mine and found it very worth the money (we bought it used for about )
Bibs; we didn’t use them much until we started solids, but now we go through several a day.
Birth announcements, Baby book or scrapbook, Coordinated crib bedding set, Mobile; these are all just fluff, but they are things I wanted and enjoy anyway. And my son really enjoys “talking” to his mobile. We also have a soft-bristled baby brush that we do use occasionally, but if we suddenly lost it I don’t think I’d worry about replacing it.
We don’t have a dresser because our nursery is just too small. Instead we either hang his clothes or put them in canvas baskets on shelves in the closet.
We do have a stroller that works with the car seat. But since we have the slings we generally find it easier to use that than fight with the stroller. The sling is more maneuverable (I can go anywhere with it) and takes up no space in the car. I do anticipate using it more when our son is older and when I have more than one child. But for now it’s just sitting in his closet.
QUESTION:
how to politely decline all this used baby stuff?
This is my first pregnancy, and it seems like everybody who has ever had a child in our social circle/family is attempting to unload this stuff on us. My MIL for example has an unfortunate habit of packing her car with items she found at garage sales and just unloading it in our foyer when she comes to visit. This is only going to get worse with the baby coming.
My husband and I are thinking that refusing gifts in any context is kind of impossible, but esp. in this context. You can’t tell your mom, that antique crib isn’t safe and lots of babies died with that type, because that implies that they are a.) old, and perhaps ignorant and b.) potentially bad parents – and “after all, I used that on you, and you lived.” Not that we’d ever keep such a thing or use it ourselves, but if they ask what happened to it when they come to visit, we’d have to admit we threw it out.
My husband and I prefer to choose and pay for our own baby items, esp. larger equipment such as car seats, cribs, strollers, etc. due to safety concerns by reviewing Consumer Reports. We’d rather spend as little as possible provided these items are safe, new and reliable, so that we don’t feel bad throwing stuff out when we’re done with it. I mean, the kid is going to vomit, pee and poo on the majority of these items, they’ll be garbage for sure with even one baby using them!
How do we tell people we don’t want any hand-me-downs? Or do we just explain we don’t want them, accept them when we get them anyway, put them in the trash as soon as the guest is gone, and when asked where it went the next time they come to visit, say…well, what exactly? We threw it out? We gave it to someone else?
Everybody thinks they are helping and we appreciate their kindness. But we already have too much junk we don’t use in this house as it is!
ANSWER:
I understand exactly how you feel and it isn’t in the slightest bit rude to feel that way! Lucky you and hubby are on the same page. I would just say that you and hubby have already picked out everything you want to get for your new baby and money isn’t an issue. Tell them you’ve been saving since you knew you were pregnant and you look forward to buying everything brand new. Say at this point you really don’t have any room left to store anything else and that you would also hate to except & hoard anything you don’t need because someone else could probably use it. There isn’t much more you can do, and if someone doesn’t like it than that will just have to be their problem. It’s frustrating enough trying to get ready for a new baby let alone trying to find places to store a bunch of other peoples stuff!
Good Luck!
Checklists are an excellent way to make sure that everything gets done while keeping stress to a minimum. Checklists can also help you allocate tasks to willing helpers, making the job that much easier. The essential components of hosting a baby shower include creating a guest list, ordering baby shower invitations, party decorations, and favors, organizing two or three games, deciding upon the food and beverages that will be served, and, above all else, ensuring that the mother-to-be will be happy with the results.
Guest List
Before other decisions can be made, the budget, date, and time must be determined, and the guest list created. Generally, the celebration is held six to eight weeks prior to the estimated birth date. Keep in mind that, as the delivery date nears, activities can become difficult for the expectant mother. It is a good idea to agree upon some sort of ‘secret signal’ between the guest of honor and the hostess that says, ‘I’ve had enough.’
Traditionally, guests were women, the point being to provide the new mother-to-be with knowledge, supplies, and furnishings she would need. Today’s event is more of a celebration and anyone can be invited, men included. Once the number of guests is determined, the fun begins!
Select A Theme And Location
Theme and location are selected once the guest list and budget are determined. Themes often feature Mother Goose rhymes, ABC’s, Dr. Seuss, teddy bears, or something more seasonal or unique to the family, such as a favorite sports team. Color schemes are no longer limited to the pinks and blues of before. Now, earth tones or pastels are popular. Online providers of birth announcements and invitations allow you to create one-of-a-kind cards that share this joyous news in unique colors, fonts, and styles.
What To Include On Birth Announcements and Invitations
Unique baby shower invitations set the tone for the party, making them a crucial part of the planning process. They include all the traditional information, such as day, date, time, and location. They also include the name and contact information of the hostess, in case guests have questions, and RSVP instructions. They also incorporate gift registry information and directions to the party venue.
Creating unique birth announcements and invitations allows family photographs of the couple, customized messages, and other special touches to be used that no one else can, all while looking stylish and coordinated. Matching thank you cards can also be ordered – an excellent idea with so many gifts on their way and so little time!
Set The Stage
Depending upon the venue, there are plenty of decorating options to choose from that will correlate with the theme set out in the baby shower invitations. Restaurants and other public buildings will have requirements of their own, making most decorations of the table top variety: diaper cakes, stuffed animals, and balloons are easy and affordable ways of making the party more festive.
If the party will be held in a private home, the decorations can be more lavish and playful: a clothesline strung across the room, decked out with infant clothes and cloth diapers, or streamers that match the color scheme of the baby shower invitations. Tableware can also carry on the color scheme. Ideally, many of the decorations will be able to serve double duty as gifts for the new infant.
Favors And Games
As soon as guests receive baby shower invitations, they will begin wondering what sort of games and activities will be planned. They can be riotously funny team events that challenge one partner to feed the other while blindfolded, to see who can diaper a doll the fastest, or infant-related charades. Other activities may include creating a memento of good wishes and parenting advice from guests. There are also fun sit-down activities such as baby bingo, nursery rhyme Jeopardy, and the ever-popular mystery baby food tasting game! Edible favors are always appreciated. Live plants, gift certificates, and bath oils have become more popular than the more traditional trinkets that, more often than not, find themselves tossed out.
Food And Beverages
Depending upon the guest list and the time of day, the menu can be a nice collection of appetizers, sandwiches, a dessert menu, or, if time and money permit, a sit-down meal. Generally speaking, alcohol is not served at a shower. Instead, sparkling juices, punch, or other healthy choices are offered. Finger foods are always an excellent choice for a party, as they allow guests to mingle and participate in activities.
Using the baby shower invitations as a hub to the planning process results in decorations, activities, and favors that are all tied together. The baby announcements, when that time comes, will reconnect shower guests to the wonderful event they shared with one another in celebration of the new bundle of joy!

Keeping your baby safe is one of the biggest concerns for all parents.
There are many things we take for granted, but are hazards to your baby.
Your home is not ready for the baby until you do some things to make it safe, especially if they are beginning to crawl or walk.
Don’t find out what is dangerous the hard way.
Here are some tips to remember.
This list is incomplete as each home is different, but hopefully, these tips will get you started in the right direction.
Your Purse: Babies love to play with the things found in a purse, whether yours or a guests.
Some of these things can be very dangerous to your baby, like medications, nail files, pens, cosmetics and other small objects.
Cleaning your home: Of course, you should make sure all cleaning products are out of reach of the baby when they are stored, but also keep this in mind as you are using them.
It’s very easy to get busy cleaning and turn your back, just long enough for them to get into something dangerous.
Use the sink instead of a mop bucket.
Your baby can drown in a small amount of water, not to mention what is in the water may be harmful to them.
Furniture: Make sure none of your furniture lamps, or decorations are easily tipped over.
Keep their high chair away from walls and other surfaces they can use for leverage to push it, possibly tipping it over.
No furniture that has chipping or peeling paint should be allowed in the house with your baby.
Check out the rooms of your house often and remember to check them from your baby’s point of view.
Get down on the floor to look for possible hazards.
A lot of Moms, especially those who breastfeed, like to have their baby sleep in the bed with them.
There are some safety tips to keep in mind when doing this as well.
Don’t put them into an adult bed alone to sleep.
They can crawl to an edge and fall off.
They can become trapped between the headboard and the bed or the wall.
They can also suffocate in soft bedding.
Babies should be put to sleep on their back, not on their stomach.
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome may have something to do with placing babies on their stomachs to sleep, according to the ”Back To Sleep Campaign”.
Don’t use pillows, comforters, and thick quilts or blankets for babies under 1 year old.
They stand a chance of suffocating themselves.
Securely fitting crib sheets are the safe way to go.
Make sure your baby cannot fall out of bed.
Bed railing is a useful item to have or having your bed with one side to the wall.
The baby should sleep between the mother and the bed rail, not between two parents.
Make sure your bed has a firm surface.
Never let your baby sleep on a featherbed, beanbag, waterbed, deep mattress, or other too-soft surface.
If you are under the influence of alcohol or medication that makes you groggy, do not put your baby to sleep in your bed.
If you are groggy, you pose a danger to your baby.
Too many pillows, blankets, or stuffed animals can increase your baby’s risk of strangulation or suffocation.
Never fall asleep on a couch, sofa, or overstuffed chair with your baby.
They can get wedged between the cushions and suffocate.
Don’t stuff too many bodies into a bed with a small baby.
If you share sleep with more than one child, adequate space is necessary for both comfort and safety.

QUESTION:
Safety tips for baby while staying w/dog owner for the holidays?
We will be staying with a family member for three weeks over the end-of-year holidays. We have a 6-month-old baby who will (of course) be with us. Recently this family member has demonstrated irresponsible dog-owning behavior, which resulted in a family friend being “nipped” at a party. I have spoken with this individual and communicated my concerns. What else can we do to help ensure everyone’s safety? The baby is not yet mobile (i.e. not yet crawling or walking).
ANSWER:
Wow, do what you can to get out of the visit. Nice as dogs are, this dog has already demonstrated what he can do.
If you have to go, make sure you don’t leave the baby’s side for a second as long as the dog is around.
QUESTION:
Experienced tips for crafty baby safety?
My 10 month old daughter is resourceful. She’s into everything, obsessed with electrical outlets, glass objects and anything with a “no” attached to it. Really– I have a 5 year old son and he’s very smart in my opinion, but he has never been a child who was “into everything.” However, she is fast and persistent. I’m having to really step up my game to keep her safe.
We stopped buying the tough electrical covers like the “Double Tough” and even the two handed ones when my son was a baby because we could so easily redirect him from dangerous areas. My daughter can remove the simple plug covers in the blink of an eye. She is crawling fast and starting to cruise. I need to be ahead of her!
What are your favorite outlet covers and why and what safety tips have you found valuable?
Thank you!
ANSWER:
I bought safety 1st covers for the outlets. My baby is into everything as well. I just have to keep a close eye on him. I also have designated areas that are clear of anything but toys for him to play with. I have dozens of toys all over these areas to keep him entertained. Other than that I’m always watching. He’s horrible about eating the tiniest thing. I dont know how he finds the stuff. i could have just swept and mopped but he finds it. I know when to check his mouth because he gets real quiet. lol I have the luxury of only having the one kid so its easier for me to watch him but I guess I don’t know any different because he’s the only one I have and he’s always been quick and resourceful. He climbs the entire flight of stairs in about 15 seconds. I don’t always have the gate up because the dog needs to get in and out so I can’t turn my back for a second.

QUESTION:
What are some crucial safety rules and overall tips/guidelines to do when babysitting a baby?
I have babysat before but I never have babysat an infant before. I know the simple things like put your arm behind the neck for support, but i still want to be as safe as possible. PLEASE HELP!
ANSWER:
If you haven’t already, I would take a local babysitter class and get certified in infant/child CPR. Hopefully you will never need it, but it is good to know and be prepared. Also, the parents you are babysitting for will appreciate it! With a small infant, you are right, the head and neck need support and gentle maneuvering. Keep an eye on the floor for choking hazards or things they are not supposed to be playing with. ALWAYS monitor bath times and never leave an infant or child alone for even a second. I think the babysitting class is a good idea. Check out your local recreation department calendar. They probably have a class this summer you could take.
QUESTION:
What are the best SAFETY tips from keeping my toddler safe from STRANGERS?
Of course I Never leave my baby alone, but I was wondering if there are some good safety tips for preventing kidnapping, etc.
ANSWER:
For younger babies WEAR your baby when you are in public instead of putting the car seat in the shopping cart. In Walmart I always see at least one baby in a shopping cart with mom at least 10 feet away. I’ve seen babies in their car seats in the shopping cart in public restrooms while mom is using the bathroom; it would have been so easy for me to grab the carrier and walk off with the baby. No one would ever have known. A few walks ago I saw this near the customer service desk where a baby was in the shopping cart about 10 feet away from mom. She was talking to the customer service personell and tons of people were walking past. I turned to my husband and told him pretty loudly and distinctly that if anyone wanted to kidnap a baby that was there chance. We got a shopping cart and looked back and mom had moved the baby closer to her.
For a toddler that can understand safety teach them to keep you in their site at all times, and make sure you know where they are. When you’re in public don’t let them walk with out holding on to you or the shopping cart. Also consider getting a harness. Dogs are smart enough to find their owners if they get separated, kids aren’t, which means that I would rather see toddlers leashed in public than dogs.
For older toddlers who can talk, every time you go into a new store find one of the employees and spend a couple of minutes teaching your toddler about how to know good people in the store. Most employees will work well with you. You can teach your child that if they ever lose you in Walmart, they can find one of the people thath as a blue shirt, tan pants, and one of the name tags that look like this. Do it once and they will retain a lot of it.
Also if you and your toddler don’t mind too much, you can wear your toddler when you are out in crowded places. Most wraps and asian baby carriers safely support up to 35 pounds.
You need to be aware of your surroundings and stay alert in situations that are easy for kidnappings.
QUESTION:
I am taking 2 babies to Oahu next year, from Australia. Any safety tips, or health issues Ishould prepare for?
One baby will be 12 months, the other 18 months. Are there any specific dangers or health risks or hotel safety I should be aware of In Honolulu?
ANSWER:
If you will be renting a car, both children will need to be in safety seats, that is the law. I don’t know if car rental companies provide them for an extra fee or not, so look into that.
H1N1 is very much a consideration. (over 200 confirmed cases). If possible, make sure everyone has been vaccinated, and remember the practice good hygiene and prevention methods.
QUESTION:
Crawling baby…and 4 year old..any safety tips?
Obviously I have all the gates and plug covers, drawer and cupboard locks…but baby is only just 6 months and just started crawling in the last 2 days..her 4 year old sister is constantly leaving teeny tiny toys around the floor and of course the baby is going straight for them…I pick up all the time but now and then I see something I missed…today it was beads and some kids jewelry…I have explained a million times to my 4 year old what could happen if baby gets any small toys… I have given her special boxes and banned her from beading in the living room but while I am doing something else she is leaving comics which the baby grabs and chews and worries me sick! What can I do short of banning all toys from the living room…I dont want my eldest to feel like I am pushing her out.
ANSWER:
My opinion, with a baby life is going to change for everyone and I don’t think it’s bad (I don’t feel that you would be pushing her out) to set new boundaries. Your four year old needs to experience changes and she needs to learn how to deal with them and readjust. It’s just a life experience that we all need to learn, because it’s something we will all face. I think that you should talk to her and tell over and over again. Keep reminding her, even before she leaves the toys out. Tell her while she is playingthat when she is done she needs to put the toy/s away. Use positive reinforcement, when she does it, even if you have to tell her to put it away, make sure you let her know what a good girl she is and how much she helped mommy. Also if she does leave a toy out don’t pick it up yourself, bring her in the room to pick it up and put it away. And when you feel that this isn’t working then show her what happens to toys she doesn’t put away. Put something aside and tell her this is where toys go when she doesn’t put them away like mommy asks and tell her she won’t get them back until she proves that she can put her other toys away or she can get them back in a certain time frame. Good luck.

Knowing what baby care products you should be looking for can be a troublesome and stressful experience for any new parent. Baby safety is very important, and the anticipation of the responsibility that being a new parent necessarily involves is usually coupled with being inundated with brochures, leaflets and books listing countless dozens of essential products that you will need to purchase and install.
A very important consideration for your new baby is the question of temperature. It is easy for small children to get very cold, particularly in their hands and feet, so make sure that you have plenty of baby clothes, rompers or sleepers, and items to cover the little extremities such as mittens and booties. It is important to make sure that your new baby’s head is always covered, as a good deal of heat can be lost through the head, and for this reason a bonnet or hat is important. This is particularly true if your child is born during the winter months.
There has been much written about how to ensure that your baby is safe whilst sleeping in their cot or Moses basket. Make sure they sleep on their side or on their back and that you do not use pillows, duvets or loose toys, as these can easily cover the face of your baby, resulting in possible breathing difficulties. Keep in mind that cribs and cots must meet federal and ASTM standards, so if you purchase yours from one of the top manufacturers you can be sure that these are met.
It is also important to make sure that your baby is sleeping in a room which is of an appropriate temperature. There are a range of baby thermometers available which clearly indicate the optimum temperature for your baby’s nursery. If the room is quite warm then it is important not to use polyester sheets, and to remove any plastic wrapping that may be around the mattress. Make sure that you have plenty of baby blankets, and warm slick suits or rompers, in case the temperature drops too low.
There are a tremendous number of baby safety devices available to help protect your baby from the various dangers that an average family home presents. From baby gates to door stoppers, from electrical output plugs to fireguards – the sheer number and variety can be overwhelming. But in thinking about baby care products it is easy to forget that many of these items might be better described as toddler care products. It will be several months before your baby stands any chance of being able to get anywhere near any of these household dangers.
For this reason it is usually advisable for new parents to focus on those products that are actually going to be needed in the first few days and weeks of your new baby arriving. Baths and bottles are of particular importance. As a mother, whether you have decided to breast-feed or bottle feed it is sound advice to have bottles and baby milk formula ready just in case.
You will also need to make sure that you have a way of sterilizing the bottles, and it may well be advisable to practice sterilizing and making up the bottles of milk. Make sure that your bottles are glass: Canada has banned the use of plastic bottles due the possible content of Bisphenol A (BPA) in polycarbonate bottles, and many environmental organizations are suggesting that other countries should do the same due to its possible adverse effect on the endocrine system, responsible for the regulation of hormones in the body.
When it comes to transport, car seats are of critical importance and you will have to purchase this before you get baby home. If there is one baby care product that must purchase new it is this. This is not the time to take a chance on second hand goods, the history of which you do not know, and any child car seat could have been previously damaged without your knowledge. Also make sure to check the expiration date – yes, they have one – and that the seat is facing to the rear until your child is over one year old and at least 20 ponds, when he or she can be switched to a forward facing seat.
It is impossible to know for certain which baby care products your own baby will take to best. As long as you have purchased a good quality crib or cot, with appropriate sheets and blankets, a huge number of nappies and changes of clothes for the first few days and are confident in using the baby milk bottles and sterilizers, then the chances are that you will thoroughly enjoy the first few days of having your new baby, although in your sleep deprived state it is unlikely that you will
remember this!
It is often difficult for new parents to understand what baby care products they should purchase for their new addition to the family. The problem is not the range available, but knowledge of all the hazards presented to babies, and how to protect them from the risks these hazards present. Baby safety is specific to new babies that cannot help themselves should they be in trouble.
Go online and check out the latest information on recent recalls of dangerous baby products that has been provided by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).

QUESTION:
I need to buy max-cosi (baby safety products) in Groningen. Can you give me adresses, I don’t speak Dutch.?
Maxi-Cosi products
Maxi cosi baby safety products
ANSWER:
The easiest (although not necessarily the cheapest!) is to go to your local branch of Prenatal. They have branches in many towns and most cities. Then there are also larger stores as well which are excellent and well stocked. My local warehouse stock is Aalsmeer and I spent many an hour there when my two were a bit younger (now they are 1 and 3 years old so I don’t go so often)
Anyway you are in luck! In Groningen there is a in-town branch and a warehouse branch as well. http://www.prenetal.nl/Filiaalwijzer
Here is the address and opening times for the in-town one http://www.prenatal.nl/Winkels/ShopDetails.aspx?storeID=29 and here for the warehouse http://www.prenetal.nl/Winkels/ShopDetails.aspx?storeID=78 Like I said, go to the larger one if you can as it will be much better stocked with products
They also have an online shop http://www.prenatal.nl/Shop_Homepage but of course this is in Dutch
Otherwise I also used Baby Dump in comparison for things like car seats, buggies etc although they do not have a branch in Groningen but only in – Grou (FRIESLAND) and Zwinderen (GRONINGEN-DRENTHE) http://www.baby-dump.nl/index.php?page=ves
So checking the NL website of Maxi Cosi then there is a page where you can type in your postcode or city and it brings up all the stockists in the area.
- Go to http://www.maxi-cosi.com/maxicosi/dealers.aspx
- On the right-hand side in the field next to “of Plaats” (or Place) type in “Groningen”.
- Press “zoek” (search) and all the shops will come up with the addresses, map and websites if applicable
If you are still stuck then feel free to Email me (click on my profile and you need to enable your Email option on your profile as well if you haven’t already done so)
If you are looking for second hand (and there are a lot of second hand items because it is a common brand here) then you can look on Marktplaats, but it is completely in Dutch though….. http://www.marktplaats.nl/
EDIT – do take care with lists from the yellow pages as there are no guarantees that all the stores stock Maxi Cosi stuff e.g. Wijsneus doesn’t.

It is indeed a cherishing moment for parents to see their babies crawling or walking. However, these new developments add new responsibilities to the parents’ shoulders. There are many places in the house where you would not like the baby to visit. To make it possible, you can take help of baby safety gates that are difficult for little ones to operate. Here are some ways in which these baby safety products are useful for parents.
Preventing Staircase Accidents
Falling from staircase is among the most common reasons for injuries that babies obtain at home. You can install safety gates at the top of the staircase, in case the nursery is at the first floor. At the same time, you need to install the safety gate at the bottom of the staircase to prevent the baby from climbing the stairs.
Preventing Fire Accidents
A baby safety gate is of great help if you have fireplace at home. You can prevent the baby from reaching the fireplace by installing a gate near the fireplace. This is of use especially when you are not around. One such gate is also of use to prevent the baby from entering the kitchen. It is important that baby should not access the items in the kitchen that are not safe for him.
Other Safety Uses
Baby safety gates can also restrict the baby from accessing the bathroom in your absence. The slippery surface of the bathroom may become the cause for serious baby injuries. These baby safety products can be installed at the entrance of the room where you may store important documents. This prevents the baby from access and damaging them. Finally, you may install a gate at the entrance of the nursery if you wish the baby to be in his room when you are busy somewhere else.
Baby safety gates are useful as they are available in huge variety to meet different sets of requirements. They are made of different materials, may be hardware or pressure mounted and are available in different heights. This enables the parents to choose a good baby safety product.
QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?
ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.
Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.
A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

Kayla is lucky to be alive after a 30kg large screen TV crushed her little body. Kayla’s accident is a warning to all parents with large televisions and small children. Learn the essential baby home safety tips for large screen TV’s to keep your baby safe.
In the state of Victoria, Australia, (population 5,427,700) the rate of injury to children from falling TV’s which resulted in hospitalization of the child, has risen from 37 in 2000 to 101 in 2009. Leg and foot injuries are among the most common injury to children under 5 years, followed by head, face and neck injuries, and unfortunately one child has died from a falling television.
Kayla’s mother heard a loud crash come from the room where little 4 year old Kayla had been watching TV. The 30 kg large screen TV which had been sitting on top of a chest of drawers had fallen more than a metre onto Kayla’s body with only her feet visible below the large television.
Kayla suffered a large cut to the side of her head and had blood coming out of her mouth, ear and nose and was also not breathing for a short period of time. Kayla’s mother held her little girl as she thought she was dying.
In a critical condition, Kayla was taken to hospital, doctors were unsure if she would survive. Kayla’s mother said “I never imagined in my wildest dreams a television could do so much damage.” Neurosurgeons operated on Kayla’s damaged brain lining and part of her skull was removed to allow room for her brain to swell. She was in an induced coma for 6 days hovering between life and death, with her mother at her side.
After Six weeks, Kayla is making a remarkable recovery with further surgery scheduled on her skull to replace the piece that was removed. Doctors hope she will make a full recovery but expect it will take a long time and she may be left with subtle deficits.
Kayla’s story highlights the dangers of large screen TV’s to little children, when babyproofing your home the television is often overlooked, but obviously as parents we need to include large screen TV’s on our baby home safety checklist.
Baby home safety guide for large screen TV’s: 7 steps you must know
Match the stand or cabinet to the size of the TV – it should have a wide, deep and sturdy base.
If you are not using a TV stand, place the TV as far back as possible on a low, stable surface.
Use wall brackets and straps to anchor the TV to a wall – A length of lightweigt chain is ideal to attach to the back of the TV and then anchor to a fixture on the wall, make sure the wall fixture e.g. a strong hook, is attached to a wall stud.
Keep TV cords behind the furniture where children cannot reach them.
Do not use TV cabinets with drawers immediately under the TV, as this is more likely to overturn when a loaded drawer is opened, your child may even use the drawer as a step for extra height.
Do not place the remote control and other items attractive to children on top of the TV where they may try to reach them.
Never place the TV on unstable furniture such as a chest of drawers, speakers or a trolly.

QUESTION:
Baby safety?
I was wondering what sort of room, bath and temperature thermometers you have all used for your babies. For the temperature i’ve seen ones you can use across their forehead, but then there all these expensive ones to use in their mouth or ears etc. so i havent got a clue which one to get and if the forehead ones are even accurate? then there are the basic room thermometers that you stick on the wall, and then ive seen ones like the grobag egg etc. and same for the bath ones. i feel that if i got the basic cheap ones, i would be a bad mum for not buying the best to make sure my baby is completely safe when shes born. i already feel guilty, but then i dont want to waste money on the expensive stuff when the basic stuff is just as good? what do you think i should do??
31 weeks & 6 days.
Thank you everyone, its a relief to hear the expensive stuff isnt as essential as i thought! I think its because my boyfriends sister who just had her baby bought all the expensive things so i assumed its what i should get too. I will stick with the basic ones, and get an ear thermometer. thanks again.
ANSWER:
You don’t need all the expensive stuff, your mam didn’t have all this stuff & her mam & her mam & her mam, you get the picture. The cheep ones will be ok.
Have a look around you local car boot, you should be able to get almost every thing you need at a fraction of the high street cost, & it’s not all used stuff, Babys grow very quickly so lots of babys out grow clothes before they are ever worn, brand named stuff too.

You can even go with Walmart online, b/c online they have several car seats taht aren’t offered in stores for cheaper than at other places. Amazon and eBay are ok, too, as long as the seat is brand new, with tags attached to the harness.
sign up with ebates.com for discount at babyuniverse, and check out fatwallet’s site, they offer discounts at different stores, too. Most of the places above offer free shipping as well. And depending upon your child’s current age and size, if your’e in the market for a Britax convertible seat, they’re on sale right now. Britax only allows 2 sales a year, so its a big deal.
