Some toys which are marketed for a specific age range can even harm the development of children in that range. An infant’s environment should be made as hazard-free as practical.
Parents and others responsible for a child’s care must be safety experts. Toys with small pieces, such as these Lego, elements are required by law to have warnings about choking hazards in some countries. “Toy-caused” accidents, which occur due to a fault in the toy’s design, material content, construction or performance, are infrequent.
Since toys are among the first things a child considers his or her own, adults should encourage a youngster to assume responsibility by demonstrating how to use and care for toys. Not all toys are appropriate for all ages of children.
Playing with toys and behaviour:
Dexterity develops as he or she handles objects in play. One of the most important things a child do is play. Play is the essential joy of childhood and is also the way children learn about themselves, their environment and the people around them. Modern action figures, such as Action Man, are often marketed towards boys, whereas dolls are often marketed towards girls.
When children play with a broad variety of toys, the experiences help them to develop to their fullest potential. To be fun the toys should match the child’s maturity and challenge his or her skills. Children with access to a wide range of well-selected toys are more likely to be challenged and stimulated.
Toy factual information and History:
In Ancient Greece and Ancient Rome, children played with dolls made of wax or terra cotta, sticks, bows and arrows, and yo-yos. Toys can aid in the development of physical and mental skills which are necessary in later life. The oldest and, perhaps most common construction toy is a set of simple wooden blocks, which are often painted in bright colors and given to babies and toddlers.
The things that are built are sometimes used as toys once completed, but generally speaking, the object is to build things of one’s own design, and old models often are broken up and the pieces reused in new models. Sometimes intended as decorations, keepsakes, or collectables for older children and adults, most dolls are intended as toys for children, usually girls, to play with.

QUESTION:
What safety factors need to be considered when making a soft toy?
I wanna know what materials are best to be used when making a soft toy.
list of materials and what makes it a safety fire hazard?
less easy to burn?
ANSWER:
soft toys for children must be made of all new materials. If for sale. Most readily available fabrics are tested for their fire hazard levels. Fire retardent treatments in fabrics can cause other problems. Allergens, toxins etc.
Polyester melts, cotton burns with a low flame and low heat. Both good.
Never use pins without counting them so you know none are left in the toy. Make sure any buttons or embellishments are secured with linen button twist threads and follow manufacturers instructions on purchased joints and eyes. Any hair or yarn wigs should be secured carefully and for a young child, individually hand knotted yarn strand hair is safest to prevent choking. Polyester fibrefil is a good washable stuffing. So is laundered and shredded used stockings.

QUESTION:
China says U.S. also to blame for toy safety scares – Are we?
China hit back after Mattel’s massive toy recall on Monday, saying designers and importers should also take responsibility for product safety, but promised to punish its own manufacturers who flout standards.
The world’s largest toymaker recalled more than 18 million Chinese-made toys this month because of hazards from small magnets that can cause injury if swallowed, just two weeks after it recalled 1.5 million toys due to fears over lead paint.
◄ Why are there not stricter guidelines on these issues, hello – lead paint on children’s toys – those who put everything in their mouths? And will we really get our money back on all the toys we have purchased? ►
ANSWER:
there ARE guidelines and laws, that’s why they are being recalled. Everyone along the line has some responsibility. Manufacturers and consumers who CHOSE to purchase based on low price above everything else are partly responsible for naively believing that there was no downside to very cheap products. Stop thinking Wal-mart cheap and start thinking local quality.
According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, nearly 300 children under 4 years old die every month in the United States because of accidents – most of which can be prevented. Children injure themselves in a variety of ways including in play spaces, on doors and gates, in kitchen and cooking areas and on inappropriate toys or broken toys to name just a few.
Play space injuries can be avoided in a classroom by making sure toys are properly stored when not in use and the room arrangement is designed to include a variety of activity centers with adequate space for children to explore.
Many children are injured each year because of the careless use of doors and gates. To avoid these injuries, make sure that doors and gates are kept closed. Never leave an open door unattended, remind parents and teach children to open doors carefully and slowly to avoid injuring a child playing on the other side.
To prevent injuries in cooking areas, it is best to restrict access to adults only, few things are safe for young children in the kitchen area.
Toys play a major role in the early childhood setting. Children love toys. However, many children are injured each year by toys. There are four major factors affecting toy safety: toy selection, toy maintenance, toy storage, and supervision and interaction.
Some toys can pose a risk if precautions are not taken. Select good quality toys that promote safe play. Consider the children’s age, interests, and skill level when selecting toys. Follow age and safety recommendations on toy labels and read the label, as it contains important play guidelines.
Toys go through a lot of wear and tear in the early childhood setting. Proper maintenance of toys can prevent and reduce injuries. Inspect toys on a regular basis for damage or potential hazards and repair or discard damaged toys immediately.
Teach children to put toys away safely on shelves after playing. Proper storage will ensure that toys intended for older children will be stored separately from toys for younger children and reduce the number of injuries to children.
Supervising children while they play is essential to avoiding injuries. Never hesitate to stop reckless or improper play behavior. Always let the children know when their play is dangerous and demonstrate or discuss the proper play behavior.

We have a 2007 Hummer H3 and the Rear Seats do not have child safety locks. Is there a way to modify the door to only open from the outside? Or is there a product I can buy (not tape) that would work to block or cover the lock and handle?
Please advise. Thanks in advance for the help.

I have a 1995 isuzu rodeo that came equipped with the child safety locks on the back door. The problem is I cannot open the back doors from inside or outside the vehicle no matter what state the locks on the other doors are in. Does anybody know how to disable or bypass this feature?

QUESTION:
A child safety outlet cap broke in the outlet and I can’t use the outlet anymore. How do I clear it?
We just purchased a new home, and I was going to install the carbon monoxide detector in the hallway when I noticed that the outlets can’t be used because both outlets had prongs of a child safety cap break inside the outlet. They are really deep in there. Is there anyway I can fix this so I can use the outlet again? This is the ideal place to put the carbon monoxide detector. Thanks for any advice or ideas!
ANSWER:
Yes quite easily. First, make certain all electricity to that outlet is off!!!! There is a tool to test this where you only have to touch part of the outlet and not the inside. See a hardware store for this. (If you don’t want to do this, just shut off the main breaker. There will be no electricity to any part of the house at all!) Then using tweezers, gently work the pieces out of the holes. If the pieces are too far in, remove the outlet and replace it. The wiring part is very simple. Just copy the wiring method from the old one to the new one. Turn the electricity back on.
QUESTION:

On my minivan, the inside (door frame) latch came loose from the mechanicals on the inside of the door. no matter what the setting was on the selector it would not change the latch because it came loose. I had to take the door panel off and pop a connecting rod back into place…
QUESTION:
I have a provisional patent for a new child safety device Is it safe to start pitching my product to companys?
A patent attorney family member offered to do a patent search, even write up a Utility for my child safety device, but I’m broke right now and can’t pay the filing fee. This invention is totally new, there is nothing like it on the market right now. How do you think I will be taken with only a provisional? Will companies even take me seriously? If they are interested is there a chance they would help pay for patenting fees? I have no idea how this process typically works. Any help would be great.
ANSWER:
Hi,
I’ve come across many people who think patents protect them – they don’t. Just look around you – how long was it before MP3 players came on the market after the Apple iPod, for example?
Before you spend a lot of money on a patent you need to do some hard research on how your idea/product can make money. You can do your own (free) patent searches on line and I’d be amazed if you don’t find something similar to your idea. If you look for a partner to provide funds (e.g. Angel investor) for product development, they are going to be much more interested in how much the product will make, how big the market for it is, etc. The “fact” that there’s nothing like this idea of yours on the market is a warning bell! If it is so useful, why isn’t it on the market? I’ve had many “inventors” come to me with ideas that are fine on paper (e.g. new engine with few moving parts) but they underestimate the costs involved to bring it to market as well as the limited advantages it brings over existing products.
You can often discuss the market for your product without providing details, simply be refering to what you perceive as the advantages, and not how it would be done. You can ask “What would you pay for a product that protected your child from … whatever” or “If such and such could be done, would you use a product like that?”
Summer Safety At Home, Lake Or Cottage For Your Kids
By Kerry A. Francis
Summer is a great time for children to be outside exploring and playing. Help them safe on their adventures by teaching them about electrical and natural gas safety.
If you are enjoying a breezy day flying a kite together, make sure that you are in a large open area, far away from overhead hydro power lines. Never use metallic wires as a kite string. Metallic balloons and model airplanes should be kept away from overhead lines.
There is no denying that children are climbers but teach them to stay away from the fences that surround electrical substations. The fences are there to keep people away from the dangerous high voltage equipment inside a local community power substation. .
Speaking of climbing, children should never ever climb on trees that are close to utility power lines. Nor should they climb utility poles. The only people allowed to climb should be the trained power utility employees. And if your child ever finds a poor animal stuck up on top of a power or utility power, be sure that they know not to rescue it themselves but to call the help line at the local power or Phone Company.
Padmount power transformers look like nice short metal filing cabinets on a cement slab to kids. Another fun toy to be a climbing play structure to many children. These padmounted power transformer boxes are locked to prevent people from coming into contact with the very dangerous and deadly high voltage equipment on the inside of the locked box. If you do spot a broken or compromised lock or a padmounted transformer with its door open stay away from it and report it immediately to the power utility and your local police.
And what is summer without water and swimming in the hot and humid weather. Whether it is at your own backyard, condo or apartment swimming pool, the lake or cottage camp or even the home bathtub, the dangers of water and electricity are all and always the same. Keep electric appliances, cords and toys away from any sort of water.
Similarly if cleaning be very careful of flammable cleaning solvents. Not only can these solvents cause intoxication from the fumes with kids but as well a spark or an open flame from a match can ignite the flammable fluids and even their vapor. Even the spark from an innocent light switch can ignite the vapor of a flammable cleaning fluid vapor. And never for convenience or just laziness on a long weekend, at the cottage, have lake or home used flammable gasoline as a cleaning fluid.
If a summer trip or outing takes you in the area of a power station , power dam or waterway always teach children about the dangers of swimming and boating in the vicinity of dam and to obey all warning signs , rules and regulations. Always stay away and clear of hydroelectric dams and power stations unless of course there are clearly indicated walkways and observation points.
Teaching children safety tips can help keep your children as well as their friends safe for their entire lives.
QUESTION:
Crime – More risk to personal safety at home than on the street?
Hi I have got an essay question asking me to discuss whether personal safety is more at risk at home than on the streets.
Would like to get other peoples opinion/answers, would be very grateful
ANSWER:
You need to define personal safety more. With out a doubt, more serious crime is done by people who know each other (domestic violence) than by strangers as there is motive. On the other hand you have to look at other safety issues at home too like internet safety, cyber bullying, cyber stalking, personal information being used, fraud, bank account stealing. This is all done in the home by people we let into our homes through the internet. You must take that into consideration too!
QUESTION:
Who is liable for fire safety at home?
A relative of mine who lives in a property owned by me is ‘reckless’ at times with her cigarettes. There have been instances of slight fire damage, God knows how a major incident hasn’t developed yet. Am I liable if an incident develops, as I know ‘what she is like’?
ANSWER:
The occupier is responsible for that sort of thing.
The owner/landlord is responsible for ensuring that appliances etc are legal and safe.
If there was a fire and it was caused by their carelessness then although it would be your insurance which would initially pay you (or your insurance) could then claim from them.
QUESTION:
Have you seen any older people hurt at their home due to poor home safety?
I’m making a movie about dangers at home that cause older people harm.
Please let me know what you have seen, what was done to correct the problem.
ANSWER:
It is not as simple as poor home safety. It is a combination of diminished abilities such as strenght, eyesight, judgment and reflexes combined with the environment. Add to this the inability to properly maintain the environment and you have all the elements of a fall waiting to happen. In terms of the physical environment you can make sure that the lighting is good, the walkways are clear and there is adequate space, there are no slippery floors or unsecured rugs. Think about the daily activities that are performed by the person and assess how they are actually performing them. I have seen many many older adults fall at home due to this combination of events Ive mentioned. What to do? Evaluate the home, the walkways, the bedroom, kitchen, bathroom. Observe how the person negotiates these areas and modify them if you have to. Also evaluate whether they may need some assistance in the home, such as someone to help with meals and cleaning or cooking, maybe someone to remind them with medications or even just drinking enough fluids. Other things are walkers, canes wheelchairs, thick carpeting in fall prone areas. I could go on and on but its late, hope Ive helped!
QUESTION:
How do I use electricity safety at home?
Please tell me 5 important rules for me to follow. Be as specific as you can. Thanks

2. Use only equipment that is designed to work with water (waterproof devices, ground fault interruption) near water.
3. Do not attempt to overload any portion of your home’s electrical system (outlets, wiring, circuit protection).
4. Do not attempt to modify incompatible equipment so that it may be used (such as bending back ground pins to use a grounded connector with an ungrounded connector).
5. Use only equipment that has been certified by a reliable consumer safety organization, such as Underwriters Laboratories.

QUESTION:
Is Mercer St (Jersey City) good area to live in? How would you rank it in Safety/ walking home at night?
i am talking about mercer st and varick st. intersection.
ANSWER:
None of Jersey City is all that safe. I remember staying at my Great Grandma’s house on carlton avenue and walking to St. Nicholas and asking my mom why she had that bottle in her hand(pepper spray). That was when I was about 6or 7, which is like 15/16 years ago so it’s probably gotten worse but the area your talking about might be better.
QUESTION:
Which is more effective for safety at home (surveillance camera, dog or alarm)?
Pick one and why.
ANSWER:
Dogs, while initiallly intimidating, are easily dealt with. They are vulnerable to most of the same measures used against humans- bludgeoning, knife attacks, and silent weapons. In addition, dogs can be disabled by a host of ultrasonic devices, antidog (repellent) chemicals, and b*tch scent.
Electronic sensors are daunting, but still have weaknesses that can be exploited. wires can be cut or rerouted. Energy sources can be destroyed. A general blackout of the area will render many security features useless.
Every security system, no matter how sophisticated, can be overcome given sufficient time. Even computers, for all their uses, are only as smart as the people who program them. Likewise, you must remember that security devices are only as good as the people who install, maintain, and answer them. No matter how good a sensor is at picking up an intruder, in the end it still comes down to a human being sent to investigate the machine’s cry for help.
So know this: The most effective home safety system is you. As fierce as guard dogs are, and as sophisticated and technologically advanced as computer monitors and sensors are, none can think. All three of these can be good as a warning, but in the end, it is what you do that matters.
So many decisions to make and just 9 months to make it through, putting the perfect nursery with your baby you must be creative and be informed. There is something to be worried; people have put together a nursery for thousands of years. It is not something to wait until the last minute to do either. Heaven forbid that in the last month of pregnancy, you have to climb up and down stairs with buckets of paint on your hands. There are many different sources online for the final source for your baby nursery. Second-hand store, catalog, online retailers, supermarket chains and department stores. Hopefully this article should give you a little of both.
Think about what color you paint or wallpaper the room, you know the sex of the baby yet? If not try and go for neutral colors like yellow or white which can be estimated from the two sexes. Sometimes pink is not very well go down to 3-year-old boy. If you know the sex of the baby – color away! What ever color you want!
2. Baby Kindergarten – Language
What room do you use? Would be secured baby? Before the baby is walking around the room and see if there are points where the baby could be hurt themselves, and proof that baby. Look plugs and sharp corners in particular. Also, think about this when purchasing furniture for the baby. It would make sense that whatever sells furniture baby will proof advance but it is always good to check. Best of tutus I regret to say anything.
How long will the baby be in this room? If only for a while you really want to change everything in bright pink with fairy stencils? If long think about how much money you later, when the baby is old enough and wants to decorate their room themselves. It’s going to be expensive to remove the blue wall paper?
4. Baby Kindergarten – The Crib
A crib is the most important part of nursery baby. Make sure you invest some money in it and bought a crib that is high quality. It is recommended that you afirm layer as a very soft with a lot of games and upset stocked up pillows may increase the likelihood of sudden cot death.
5. Baby Nursery – You!
We all know that the sleepless nights and crying babies are the core of being a new parent. Why not add something in your nursery? How about a small radio you can listen while comforting the baby or how about a rocking chair to help you put your baby to sleep. Do not forget to pamper yourself a little! It is also a good idea to talk with your friends if they had children. Parents who have children that have been developed by the baby stuff, are always trying to get rid of. Perhaps we could have some clothes or a stroller. You also have good ideas about what worked well in nursery baby and what not.

I don’t need info about Consumer Complaints Courts. I am looking for a body or an NGO working for product safety, which evaluates a product before it is used and not after “a complaint has been filed”.

You must act with due care before buying anything or getting services.
You may believe in ISI or agmark etc.
Prevention is better than cure.
No such NGO is there. If you find any such NGO, that might have been funded by one MNC.

What are some sun safety products that australians can use?
i have to do this assignment for school and i really need help on it. sources would be appreciated because i need to include a bibliography.
thank you!
ANSWER:
There are lots of products. Things you can do to minimise your chances of getting over exposed to the sun include:
Wear sunglasses with UV protection
Wear a hat and a long sleeved shirt (remember that if you can see through the clothing the sun will also get through)
Take extra precautions between 10am and 3pm when the sun’s rays are most damaging
*
Apply sun-screen with sun protection factor (SPF) of 15+ or more and don’t forget to reapply sunscreen every few hours, or more frequently if you are swimming, sweating or toweling off.
Sunscreens
The best sunscreens have a sun protection factor of 15+ or more. There are a number of sunscreens on the market in Australia that go up to SPF 50.
So it’s places where you can get any of these products. Some sites to look at include:

ANSWER:

QUESTION:
How concerned are you about the safety of products made in China in light of the China milk scandal?
With nearly 53,000 infants downed by melamine-contaminated dairy products, China’s milk scandal could very well be just the tip of the iceberg. Philippine Health Secretary Francisco Duque III announced that all milk products from China will be tested, and banned if found contaminated with melamine. But how guaranteed are we that other China-made products are safe and reliable? Share your thoughts and tell the community what you think.
ANSWER:
Extremely concerned would be an understatement. It’s a known fact that not all products in the market have passed quality standards for safety and health issues, and we can’t ignore that a large number of them come from China, which according to many critics and agencies have a really low standard of monitoring their safety and quality- all in the pursuit of profit. Now, in my case, being in a country that has known lapses in some government agencies and corruption is pretty high – not to mention the fact the majority of the population believe that foreign goods are better- this leads to all sorts of god-know-what type of substandard products come in. Also, the fact that there has been no high profile case involving foods or products that have entered the country where those responsible have been caught and brought to justice… let us not forget the issue of low quality chinese products coming into the country and are all over Divisoria. Such is that I feel we have become the dumping ground of any substandard product that was banned in other parts of the world. And when (and believe me when I say when!) a scandal relating to a banned substandard product enters the country and our kids or adults start dying- finger pointing, senate inquiries, state witnesses and every politician jumping on the band wagon, all of this will be swept away by the next “high profile” news. For those who can afford quality, good for them. But sadly, many of us cannot- and the breeding ground for low quality stuff that are dangerous is magnified. We just have to trust our own judgement when buying products made from China or for that matter anywhere else. Knowing the origin of a certain product and its tract record is already a winning combination to avoid the same fate of those babies. But seriously, compromising quality of milk for babies?!? Little ones who have no way of choosing their path yet? All for profit? That’s really low.

QUESTION:
Where should the baby safety car seat be located, middle or sides of the car, when facing front?
ANSWER:
The middle is safest by far… but having said that, you can put the baby in any position you wish so long as there is an anchor point to attach the seat to.
When i had one baby she went in the middle forward facing but on the side when rearfacing due to issues with the size of the car.
When i had two kids the baby was on the side the whole time as well as the older child who was also in a car seat still.
When i had three kids the newborn capsule went on the side as its hard to get it in the car when its in the middle, but when he went forward facing he went in the middle, with the two older ones in car seats on the sides

ANSWER:
Tip 1. Securing your child car safety seat Always install the seat tightly, using your body weight to tighten and fasten the seatbelt. There should be no more than 2.5 cm (1″) of movement of the seat from side to side or forward. Each time you place your child in the car safety seat, give it a tug to make sure it is still secure
Tip 2. Using tether straps with forward-facing car seats
The tether strap for a forward-facing child car safety seat must be used. The tether strap is located on the rear of the child car safety seat and has a hook. The hook is designed to attach the strap to the tether anchorage on the vehicle as specified by the vehicle manufacturer. Ensure the tether is only secured to the designated anchorage point(s) in the vehicle as specified by the manufacturer.
Tip 3. Using Universal Anchorage System (UAS) / LATCH
All new Canadian vehicles manufactured on or after September 1, 2002 come with lower universal anchorage points. Consult the vehicle owner’s manual before using the UAS system/LATCH to determine where the anchorage points are located and ensure that the correct method is used as advised by the car seat manufacturer.
Tip 5. Using harness slots
Your child car safety seat’s harness straps must be positioned correctly by ensuring they pass through the correct slots.
Rear-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or below the child’s shoulders.
Forward-facing child car safety seat harness straps should sit at or above the child’s shoulders.
Tip 6. Securing your child in the harness
Ensure that the harness system is snug enough on your child’s chest to allow only one finger width between the strap and the child’s collarbone.
Tip 7. Positioning your harness straps
Ensure that harness straps lie flat and they do not twist or fold. Harnesses need to be straightened out each time the child is secured in the seat.
Tip 8. Adjusting chest clips
Properly adjust the chest clips on the harness. They should lie flat against the chest and be positioned at armpit level.
Tip 9. Installing away from active air bags
Always install child car safety seats away from active air bags. The safest place is in the back seat of a passenger car, sport utility vehicle or light truck and either the second or third row in a mini-van.
Tip 10. Installing your rear-facing child car safety seat on a proper angle
Most child car safety seats have a recline position that must be used when in the rear-facing position for an infant (up to 9kg or 20lbs). Check your child car safety seat owner’s manual for instructions. For rear-facing seats, if necessary, use a tightly rolled towel or a foam bar (pool noodle) under the base of the child car safety seat to adjust the angle to 45 degrees. A forward-facing child car safety seat should be in the upright position. Make sure that when the seat is turned from rear-facing to forward-facing, the recline feature is adjusted to the upright position.

QUESTION:
Baby Car Seat Safety – older vehicles? install teather latch?
I know that vehicles made after 2002 have an anchor for the carseat teather strap….but my vehicle is a 1990 Chrysler Van
I read somewhere online that dealerships install the anchor latch free of charge….is that true or how much would it cost? Im in Canada
ANSWER:
In Canada, it is a law to have your carseats tethered. Yes, GM will install one tether anchor at no charge…and there is no charge for the hardware. You need to contact your local dealership and they will install it for you. Since it is required in Canada, they MAY be able to install more at no charge.
Is it a Chrysler Town and Country? You can have TA’s installed outboard, but not in the center and you can have them at all seating locations in the 3rd row. The part number is 05017529AA. That part no. is for all of the seating locations.
Refer to Technical Service Bulletin 23-08-00 Revision A for details. It is only with certain older models.
QUESTION:
two boosters and a baby car seat in a medium sized car?
I need to fit three kids car seats into my peugeot 307 (two boosters and a baby seat). The problem is that their combined width is greater than the width of the back seat.I have looked around, but most seats seem to be of similiar width.Does anyone know of a slimline range of safety seats?
I really don’t want to buy a new car to solve this temporary problem
its not really the seat part which causes the problem, more the styling wings, arms and cup holders which makes the whole thing too wide to fit across a normal car seat. The only solution seems to buy a van like people carrier which are wider than a standard car. There must be a better solution
ANSWER:
John Lewis and Halfords both have good ranges and offer sound adcvice.

QUESTION:
Can you buy the silvercross baby car seat capsules in Australia? Do they meet the Australian safety standards?
As we get into the warmer months, and schools finish up, it’s more likely that you’ll pile into the family auto and head off on a vacation or just a weekend road trip. Here are some things you need to know and do to help keep everyone safe.
1. Make sure your automobile is in tip-top condition. That means checking the tires, battery, fluids, belts, and air conditioner. This is especially true if you’ll be driving in a warmer climate, and/or towing something like a boat or trailer that could put added strain on your vehicle.
2. Make sure you are in tip-top condition. That means getting a good night’s sleep. Driver drowsiness is reportedly the cause of thousands of accidents yearly, so be well rested before setting off on that excursion. Better yet, share the driving duties every few hours with another adult.
3. Pack your emergency kit. You never know when calamity will interrupt your road trip, so it’s best to be prepared. You’ll want to have items such as food and water, flashlight, blankets, first-aid kit, tools, jumper cables, flares, and a cell phone, to name the essentials.
4. Check those child-safety seats. It’s been reported that up to 80 percent of child-safety seats are improperly installed! That could lead to serious injury for your small children in the event of a collision or even a hard stop. To avoid this, have your child-safety seats checked by a professional for proper installation.
5. Check the backseat. While we’re looking at the backseat and talking about hard stops, check to see what else is back there. Loose items can become projectiles in the event of a hard-braking situation, so make sure to store items under the seats or in the trunk. Also, just as you would do in your home, make sure there are no choking hazards (loose change, knobs and buttons that might come loose, etc.) that small children might get their hands on.
6. Hold down the weight. Similar to the previous tip, heavier items (strollers, suitcases, etc.) should also be properly stored and secured in the trunk or in a cargo area, where they won’t cause an injury if they come loose.
7. Be safe in the sun. Even when riding in the car, you and your children can be exposed to the sun. So be sure to equip everyone with sunglasses and sunblock. For smaller children, you may even want a sun bonnet and/or a sunshade on the windows. If it’s a warm day, remember, too, that when you come back to the vehicle, if it’s been parked in the sun, the seats can be hot enough to burn a child’s skin. And, of course, never ever leave your children alone in the car.

How do I keep myself and child safe if we cant become residents of New Jersey for 6 months?
Right now I have lived with my mom for 2mths and I need to make sure that the father of my child doesnt come here to take her away from me. The courts here are saying there is nothing to do except to put it off for 6mths but I need help now… What state is going to help me be safe with her????
ANSWER:
Don’t think the travel section is the best place to find an answer to that. If the courts are involved, you’d want to discuss this with your lawyer. If he has a history of violence against you and your child, you may be able to get an order of protection.
QUESTION:
How can I prove to my mom ooVoo is child safe?
I asked my mom if I could have ooVoo, and she said it’s not safe for eleven year olds. Literally, all but one of my friends use it, so how can I prove it’s child safe?
ANSWER:
Show her all of the security, safety, and privacy features of it. Ask if you can download it just to show her that it is safe, then tell her that she can say, you can keep it, or delete it after she sees it first-hand on your computer. If these tips don’t work in the end, just accept the fact that she says no, she only says no because she cares about you.

QUESTION:
Are there any pet/child safe methods of keeping cockroaches out of my home?
I have a seroius cockroach phobia and I live alone with my four Yorkie terriers and a small bird. I’ve done research on varoius types of home insecticides and have found none that are safe for use around children and animals. Please help!
ANSWER:
I researched this problem a few years back, my old apt had roaches (eeeew). Try this, it works:
Roaches HATE catnip. Get a bag of catnip, and soak it in hot water for a little bit (like making tea). Strain it, and then get an old spray bottle (from something used prior that is non-harmful to pets, of course, or a new one). Spray the ‘tea’ by the door, under the fridge, by anywhere that you think they enter. It completely worked for me, and they never came back!
PS the longer the catnip steeps, the better, but don’t pour all of the mixture into the spray bottle, as the leaves of the catnip will clog it – you can also keep the ‘tea’ in the fridge and use a paper towel to apply it where you need it.
QUESTION:
Can anyone give me tips to keep my child safe on horseback?
We are lucky enough to have a kind neighbor with her own horse who is teaching my 8-year-old daughter to ride for next to nothing. She loves it and I think it is good for her in so many ways. Exercise, she’s outside for hours, it helps her feel competent, etc. She’s catching on very fast (I promise, I’m not the only one who thinks so). I want to get her the best helmet I can afford, because even though she’s riding a docile, 26-year-old gelding and has him convinced she is the BOSS, stuff happens. Does safe and comfortable have to mean expensive? I have also heard a few stories about adults with back problems from riding when they were children. Does anyone know how to avoid this, short of making her give it up? She’s even happier there than on the ice! We are only able to do this about twice a month right now, and I’m hoping that will help her back, but of course eventually she will either stop or be doing it more often. Thanks
Thanks, Shadouse, for the advice about the goggles. I hadn’t heard of that and I hope I don’t sound too silly, but why? Is it just to keep the dust out of her eyes? I assume they come unbreakable in case of a fall.
ANSWER:
I’ve been riding since I was three years old, and riding all my life every single day. I have no problems with my body, but even if I did I’d still ride horses If riding horses is a passion for your daughter, then try to offer as much as you can. Yes, I’d suggest getting her a helmet just because she’s so young and things do happen. I agree, I think it is a myth about people having back problems from riding. What I have heard is that older people get bow-legged, but this is like older people who ride every single day all day, especially jockeys on race horses.
If you’re a little worried about your daughter having any physical problems from riding horses, have her do some stretches before she gets on, especially leg stretches. This helps her loosen up, relax, and helps prevent her pulling muscles and other health issues. Oh and goggles? this truly isn’t necessary I’ve never in all my life seen anyone who rides horses where goggles (except jockeys) lol it sounds kinda funny, your neighbor might look at you weird if you put goggles on her. They actually might get in the way with her concentration or affect her vision, and I don’t think they help in any way. But I guess it’s up to you.
I hope your daughter does well! She’s so lucky to have an incredible oppurtunity like that. Riding horses will not only keep her fit, but it teaches her lessons in life. I’m serious, horses are amazing creatures that will touch your soul. Good luck!

QUESTION:
How child safe are pools if a 5 ft gate is installed around it?
We are purchasing a home with a pool and I am putting in a premier child proof gate around it, 5 ft tall. Has anyone had or heard of any problems if there is a gate around the pool?
ANSWER:
I personally haven’t heard of any incidents with a proper safety fence installed around the pool (I assume you’re speaking of the safety mesh pool fencing here… or some variation of it, perhaps?) But, accidents still can happen. The best approach is several layers of protection. Don’t rely on the pool fence alone. Other things to consider would be a pool alarm (the type that goes off at the pool and in the house when a large object falls into the water), gate alarms, or even safety covers. (Generally used on inground pools.)
Also, as I’m sure you know, there is no substitute for responsible adult awareness. Keep an eye on young children when they’re in the backyard, especailly in or near the pool area.
Organic baby shoes will protect baby’s little feet, while allowing them to breathe and develop naturally. These shoes are all hand stitched, and constructed without any of the toxic chemicals which can be hazardous to babies who like to put their cute little toes inside their mouths.
Organic cotton is much softer, and more comfortable for baby’s little feet. Baby shoes made from organic cotton smell cleaner and contain no chemicals that may harm baby or trigger allergies.
Give you baby the best of your love by protecting them from harmful products and containments. Organic cotton is grown, and harvested in a green and environmentally safe manner. When you choose green and organic products, you are providing the best for your baby because there are zero toxic chemicals used in their construction.
Creating an environmentally friendly lifestyle for you and your family is a wonderful way to teach your children sustainable skills which they will carry with them throughout the rest of their lives. You will be the proud parent of a bio aware baby, by developing this important knowledge early in the life of your child about eco-friendly, organic, recycled and healthy products.
Easy to fit newborn baby shoes are available in sizes starting from infancy, so you will be able to have your baby wear the best products from the moment they are born. Organic baby shoes will be baby’s first step to learning how to live green. You are lucky that you are having your baby now, because you will be able to choose the best organic products for your child.
As a parent, you have already discovered your baby has extremely sensitive skin along with a still developing and delicate immune system. Parents need to use special care when it comes to selecting items for baby. The way to ensure that baby will not have allergic reactions and rashes from chemical products that come in contact with baby’s skin is to use less commercially made products and to adopt a natural approach to the dressing of your little ones. If you are an eco-minded parent then it is more likely that you will be passing on these concepts to your children.
Your baby’s clothing and shoes should be made from organic and natural fabrics because they will eliminate your baby’s expose to any type of harmful dyes and chemicals that could cause problems for your child. By having your baby wear organic baby shoes you will be taking the right steps towards a green lifestyle. Our children depend on us to take care of them. We also need to take care of the planet by protecting the environment. When we are being environmentally conscious of how we impact the world, we are doing our part to protect our children’s future.
A very common safety concern when parents consider how to set up their baby crib furniture bedding is whether or not to use crib baby bumpers.
When it comes to this style of bedding for baby crib furniture, a 2005 study by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission regarding crib baby bumpers found that over 20 years, from 1985 to 2005, twenty-seven children aged one month to two years suffocated or were strangled by crib baby bumper pads or bumper pad ties. Aside from deaths, the study also found that there were a total of twenty-five injuries caused by bumpers or their ties.
What the study doesn’t make clear are the circumstances of those injuries or deaths caused by crib baby bumpers, and whether they might have been related to how the child was positioned for sleep, their general strength or whether they suffered from underlying medical conditions. Considering that twenty seven deaths over twenty years indicates one or two incidents a year, the possibility that other factors could have been involved in these cases is strong.
Most parents today now understand that there are many safety concerns regarding older baby crib furniture, such as slots that are too large and might allow the baby’s head to slip through, resulting in serious injury or death. However, when it comes to finding bedding for baby crib furniture, the safety concerns of the “professionals” sometimes seem a bit overboard. Newer baby crib furniture is manufactured with ultimate safety in mind, with slots that are now too small for a baby’s head to pass through.
The study, which analyzed three U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission databases for deaths related to crib bumper and crib-related injuries from 1985 to 2005, found that 27 children from 1 month to 2 years old died from suffocation or strangulation related to bumper pads or their ties. The study also found 25 nonfatal injuries attributed to bumpers. Crib baby bumpers also come in styles that have certain features with safety in mind as well. Most have ties that are on the outside of the crib that get tied onto the baby crib furniture post, and the only case where you wouldn’t want to use a crib baby bumper is where the child is so frail and weak that they can not even roll themselves around inside the crib. New parents have enough to worry about, and crib baby bumper safety should not be one.

QUESTION:
Is it easy to install baby safety gates?
I am moving into a house at the end of the month and it has 2 stairwells. So I would need to install 4 baby safety gates for my 15 month old’s protection. Are they easy to install or should I get someone to do it?
ANSWER:
It’s not difficult at all for a DIY, with even the most modest tools. The issue might extend a bit farther however. In your case spend for the best. Certainly dollar amounts should never be equated to child safety. While I have installed some for other than family members; it is a MAJOR liability issue. Certainly as a DIY your concerns are as valid; but in your case also is it valid for a contractor to not strictly want to take on the safety of YOUR child…after the fact; and possibly for years.
Instructions are pretty clear with any quality product; and should be followed. Not only do you want the gate secured in a locking system; TOP AND BOTTOM; but also one with some fabrication that disallows climbing over; and/.or secured protrusions; etc.
A tenacious child will continue to seek out ways to overcome a gate; and obviously any child young enough to NOT GET IT; should be pretty constantly monitored anyway.

QUESTION:
Baby safety?
My baby is 8 months old. She rolls over, seats up on her own also. In the morning she wakes up and just rolls over and sometimes cries. I thought if i can put little stuffed animals in her bed, so when she wakes up she can play with them;instead of her getting bored and crying for me to pick her up, eventhou she is feed and clean. Is that safe??
ANSWER:
I think at 8 months old that would be ok. I’d make sure they are not big stuffed animals though. Smaller/medium sized ones that don’t cover her face. Or does she have a favorite rattle or something hard like that?
QUESTION:
Can i put my 6 month baby in a jr bed with an extra safety guard?

Im sure that you could but from having a 7 month old I wouldn’t because it doesn’t seem as safe as the crib and what if the baby rolled and somehow got stuck and suffocated?
QUESTION:
Safety tips for baby while staying w/dog owner for the holidays?
We will be staying with a family member for three weeks over the end-of-year holidays. We have a 6-month-old baby who will (of course) be with us. Recently this family member has demonstrated irresponsible dog-owning behavior, which resulted in a family friend being “nipped” at a party. I have spoken with this individual and communicated my concerns. What else can we do to help ensure everyone’s safety? The baby is not yet mobile (i.e. not yet crawling or walking).
ANSWER:
Wow, do what you can to get out of the visit. Nice as dogs are, this dog has already demonstrated what he can do.
If you have to go, make sure you don’t leave the baby’s side for a second as long as the dog is around.

QUESTION:
What are the required and safety things I need to take for my 6 months baby to swim in the sea with me ??
I am planning to start swimming with my 6 mons baby in the sea with me. I need your kind assistance and experience to tell me what do I need to prepare for her, what are the safety stuff…..etc.
Thanks a bunch
ANSWER:
Never go alone with her. Always have another adult, at least on the beach if not in the water with you. Don’t go out too far and don’t take her in if she’s been fed within the last hour.
QUESTION:
looking for a chair for baby of 9 months with safety straps.Only the one he has at the moment tilts forward?
he keeps trying to stand up in his chair, and actually went completely forward the other day, luckily I was in the room with him when it happen. although he did hit his face on the floor but nothing too serious, but could of been. I have been looking everywhere for a baby chair from 9 months upwards with safety straps as he is not walking yet,and not sturdy enough to balance himself. The chair he has at the moment is for birth to infant FP.Can anyone help
ANSWER:
If you’re talking highchairs, Peg Perego is great. If you’re talking a bouncy chair, which I think you are. Kids shouldn’t be in one after they learn to sit, it’s dangerous. Try putting him in his excersaucer, or if he doesn’t have one, that would be a good investment. Otherwise, put him in a play yard where he can’t escape from, but can move around safely
