1St Year Of Your Baby's Development

Are you watching your child closely to make sure that they are developing as they should during the first year? Are they rolling over, trying to walk or talk when they should be? Is your baby ahead of schedule or late?  Your acquaintances and family will be looking for progress reports on your baby, so be ready.

It’s important to keep in mind that each child is unique, and develops at their own speed. However most babies do progress within time frames enough of the time, to give us an idea of when they should be doing what. It is always best to check with your pediatrician if you have any concerns about your baby’s development. The safest rule is to follow how your baby is progressing over time, instead of becoming concerned if they don’t follow a month by month graph. But here are some common guidelines you can go by:

Newborns: According to the American Academy of Pediatrics babies should be reacting to sounds by startling, blinking, crying or being calmed, by one week. They should be able to fix on your face, and begin to follow movement with their eyes. You will help them develop by talking, cuddling, playing and cooing with them.

Month 1:  Your baby will begin staying awake longer, and sleeping longer (three-5 hours per time). They might be a bit fussier at this stage. They will probably start to lift their heads as well. If they seem unhappy, you can help by cuddling and holding them.

Month 2-3: They may thrill you with a smile at this stage, and not one that is the result of gas! Now they can comprehend the world, and how they affect it by their behaviors. This is a cognitive growth related milestone. Your child will start to react to your stimuli, by cooing back to you.  Your child will begin to attempt lifting their heads and upper body. Give your child praise, sing and laugh with them.

Month 4-5: This is when your child may begin to coo more, reach for things and roll from their stomach to their back. This is when you should establish a bedtime routine for your baby.

Month 6:  By this time many babies are sitting up without assistance. They are beginning to increase their motor skills by grabbing things, and placing them in the mouth, or moving them from hand to hand. Your child may want to attempt drinking out of a cup at this point.

Month 7-9:  Things get going now. Your baby may attempt to form words (such as mama or dada), and will become much more verbal now. They will start to crawl and pull themselves up to an upright position. Your baby is continuing to develop| his fine motor skills. They may also have their ‘first’ tooth about months 8-nine. Reading and playing games with your baby is wonderful for helping their development at this stage.

Month 10-12: Your child may be walking by this stage, but do not worry if this doesn’t happen until about month fifteen. They will be trying to feed themselves with their hands, wave bye-bye, search for items, and begin speaking some words other than mama, and dada.

Have an awesome time with your baby during the 1st year. Use these guidelines, but keep in mind that no two babies are the same. With your help and encouragement, your baby will develop and learn skills at their own rate. If you are concerned, always consult with your pediatrician.

Let's Choose Together A Cot For Your Baby

You are looking forward to your baby’s arrival and ready to do the best you can to make your child’s environment safe and comfortable. As newborns spend most of their time sleeping thus your baby sleeping place should always be your first concern when designing you baby’s nursery.

While buying a baby cot
You should be careful while choosing a baby cot for your little one. Although all new baby cots available in the market should meet the current infant bedding safety standards it would be very provident if you devote your attention to this and check it by yourself.

If you have already decided to buy a definite baby cot it is important to make sure that every component of your cot is sturdy and firmly attached. Even if you are buying a new one and you believe that every detail works and the cot is equipped with the latest safety features it is preferable to check it personally.

Examine every detail of it: the bars, the mattress base, and the drop sides, as well as any other panels or pieces for stability. Avoid getting a baby cot with protruding knobs and other hardware that may catch your infant’s clothing. Some decorative features as knobs and cut-outs can look fancy and elegant but do not use any cot which features them because they might be a danger to your baby safety.

Sometimes minor defects can be discovered only when a bargain has been concluded. Don’t be reckless, shy or lazy, stand your ground and change the cot. It is advisable to review such an admissible situation beforehand.

A hand-me-down baby cot, is it safe?
It is not advisable to get a hand-me-down baby cot if you don’t know its history. Getting a second-hand cot can be practical in case if it is inspected thoroughly and every detail and fasteners are all right, especially make sure all the bars are secured and none are missing. Cot bars on the headboard, footboard or sides of the baby crib should not be over 2-1/8 apart. If the cot has been repainted make sure the paint used on the cot is lead-free otherwise you won’t be able to prevent future neurological complications.

What must be definitely new?
Speaking about baby mattresses it is important to mention that they should be definitely new. Because only new baby mattress can be firm enough, that is very good for a newborn because a new baby’s muscles are not fully developed yet and it is hard for the child to lift his or her head up after she or he has sunk into a soft and fluffy surface. In addition when your child is in bed on a firm cot mattress he or she can move and roll about more freely and easily, making him or her more comfy.

The baby mattress has to fit the cot snugly and close in order not to allow the wiggling baby get trapped between, and moreover there should be at least a height of 26″ that you can measure from the top of the cot mattress to the top of the cot rail in a raised position.

Baby Bath Time Safety

Bath time can be great fun for you and child. You can keep it fun by allowing your child to play with toys in the bath, such as squirters or toys that float like boats. Safety is the main priority when bathing a child, so make sure you always stay close to your child at all times especially if your child is under five years.

Water temperature is probably the most important part to remember, you certainly don’t want to scold your child so check with your elbow. Why your elbow you ask? Well remember that babies skin is very sensitive and not as tough as adult skin, so it reacts to temperatures differently. So if it feels nice on your elbow your baby will find that temperature perfect.

There are risks to bathing a child. The two main risks you have to worry about are scalds which we covered in the first part of this article. If you prefer you could always check the temperature of a bath with a thermometer.

The second one only really applies to newborns or very young children and that is drowning. Newborns are at more risk as they are “Top Heavy” and constantly need their head supporting. We don’t want to put you off bathing your child, we just want to make you aware of the dangers. They key thing to do is take your time bathing a child and the try not to be distracted.

So remember our top tips for safe bathing are:

1. Always supervise children of all ages at bath time.

2. Check the water temperature using your elbow or use a thermometer.

3. Get everything you need ready, and place it nearby to make it easy to reach so that you never have to leave your child once they are in the bath.

4. Make sure you rinse the bath out once you have finished to keep it clean.

5. Make sure you or your partner remain with your child throughout the whole time. Don’t let anything distract you. If you do find you need to do something, or have forgotten get something, make sure someone is able to take over.

6. Distractions can be trouble so if you think you could be distracted turning your mobile phone off or taking your landline off the hook will help. If you are bathing your child and the door bell goes or the phone does ring, ignore it! But if you do have to go and answer the phone or the door for any reason, take your child out of the bath, wrap your child in a warm towel and take your child with you.

7. Check the water temperature before putting your child in the bath, using your elbow or a thermometer.

8. You can always add more water to the baby bath, check the bath water constantly and add more hot or cold accordingly. To get the bath to the perfect temperature we recommend running the hot and cold water together, at the same speed. This will make the bath 50% hot and 50% cold. If you need to increase the temperature, add more warm water. If you do need to add more hot water fill a jug up and add it gradually, as this reduces the risk of your child getting burnt when you add water directly from the taps.

9. A great tip to remember when using a baby bath is to fill the baby bath up to belly button height (roughly 8 cm) which is plenty for a child who can sit un- supported.

10. Make sure both taps are turned off tight and if you have mixer tap, for safety, point them to the cold setting. If your child manages to turn the mixer on, he or she will just get a cold shock, rather than a hot scald.

11. Keep a watchful eye at all times on your child, even if you are using a bath seat or cradle. They are not guaranteed to keep your child safe unsupervised.

12. Remember to empty and wash the bath out when you have finished to keep it clean, especially if your child has an accident.

We hope you have found these baby bath safety tips useful, and it has made you aware of some hazards you may have not thought of. Baby bath time can be a great way to bond with your child, and both of you should enjoy it.

Helping Your Baby Develop His Visual Sense

More than 75% of all the baby learns will come as a result of his visual experiences.  Infants are attracted to bright colors.  Seeing color is a part of his early learning.  Visual perception develops in a sequence that is still not completely understood.  Apparently babies see only dark and light at first, then vague shapes in black and white and shades of gray. Not until the baby has learned to recognize people and objects with sight alone will he begin to develop his capacity to see color.  Some pediatricians feel that most toddlers are unable to distinguish individual colors until after they are 2 ½ years old.  Even though the small child may not see color and is really attracted to strong contrasts or movement, the experiences he has with bright colors are still important.

If the child is between the ages of two months and 2 ½ years, experiences with color are an important part of his visual development.  Along with providing the baby with a variety of touching experiences, a parent should add slow movement and brightly colored objects to his day-to-day teaching regime.  Just as numerous experiences with hearing stories and looking at pictures even before he can talk assist in preparing the child for reading, so do experiences with color begin the development of his visual discrimination.  Brightly colored   mobiles moving slowly overhead and brilliant red rattles and colorful appliques seen against neutral backgrounds are the kinds o visual experiences the baby ought to be having daily.

Experiences with color will be a need of the child into adulthood, but the sort of color environment described above will no longer be needed when the child starts to distinguish one color from another.  From that point on color experiences will become much more specific. For an array of brightly colored items from toys, to baby blankets, hooded towels, baby bibs, and infant clothing go to www.babyblanketbabe.com

Babies With Thrush And Diaper Rash

There are different signs and symptoms that let a parent know when their child has a diaper rash. It can be a chronic issue that is very uncomfortable and sometimes painful. It should be treated properly and not left ignored. Diaper rash itself can also be a symptom of another underlying problem that your baby may have. Thrush is a form of a yeast infection just like other rashes are. Some rashes are caused by Candida albicans which is a type of yeast. If your baby does have thrush, it is not uncommon that they will also have a rash from their diaper.

There are side effects that thrush causes that will help you determine if your baby has it or not. The symptoms look different from a rash caused by a diaper. Thrush only occurs in the mouth and there will by small white patches on the roof of the mouth, the sides, and on their tongue. Most parents say that it looks like there is milk stuck on their baby’s mouth. Usually newborns develop this type of rash and it’ll occur up to four to six weeks after birth.

Unlike other rashes, thrush can go untreated. It usually doesn’t cause a lot of pain or irritation. If your child does appear to be uncomfortable, you may need to treat it with an antifungal like you do with other rashes such as diaper rash. If there is discomfort, it will usually only be when they are feeding. The rash should clear up within a couple of weeks on its own. If it doesn’t, you may need to consult your doctor about the rash.

Unlike a diaper rash, there is nothing that can be done to prevent thrush from occurring. A rash caused from diapers can be prevented and treated with diaper ointment. Thrush is not as severe as some other types of rashes that cannot be left untreated. If your child does develop thrush, it is more important for you to treat the diaper rash that may also appear because of the Candida albicans. If you are breastfeeding, you also need to watch for thrush to appear on your own body. It can pass from child to mother and vice versa. You can treat thrush on your body with an antifungal.

If your newborn develops these types of rashes, be sure to give them a little extra love and attention. Be sure that the rashes don’t get too severe or bothersome to your baby. Thrush isn’t dangerous to your child’s health but it shouldn’t be ignored either. Treat any rashes that may develop.
